This is back in the day when songs were allowed to be the epic length of 5:30 on the radio.  In '84 you could turn up the AM radio in your car and actually be INSIDE a song long enough to get you to the next light.  Now, it's all about getting it all under 4 minutes.  Tick tock tick tock, right Madonna?  And she is right...(in the Kabbalah, four signifies the four worlds: emanation, creation, formation and action).

Julian Wilson: Much of the current '80s New Wave revival either revolves around musicians that either (a) grew in the '80s and listened to the genre's output when it was still new or (b) discovered groups such as the Cure, Depeche Mode, and the Psychedelic Furs while rummaging through pawn shops or their parents' or older siblings' collections. Which one are you?

Vinnie Velez: My first exposure to New Wave music was via awesome John Hughes '80s flicks like The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, and Weird Science. Those sountracks, along with other '80s movies, became my childhood sing-alongs even though I grew up in the '90s. I always embraced '80s fashion growing up as well, substituting bright colors and flash in place of plaid and denim. Now I'm comfortable throwing on a leather jacket, dress shirt, enough hair product to kill an army of ants, ripped jeans, and skater sneaks. I'd call it the New Wave slacker.
 
Wilson: In what ways is White Noise Radio different from other young acts similarly infatuated with '80s New Wave?

Velez: With White Noise Radio I didn't set out to write a New Wave record; the natural process was for those tones to work their way out of my past and into the future of my music. I am definitely a hook addict though when it comes to songwriting, and as soon as someone listens to the WNR debut they will pick up on that.  Where other bands would stop writing hooks for a track, I would consider that moment a decent start to a WNR tune. 
 
Wilson: Describe your early days as a musician. What kind of music were you doing?

Velez: I was a punk rocker off the bat, drumming and singing in countless reincarnations of the same small-town band. At the time, the town I grew up in (Germantown, NY) was so repressed that it had actually banned MTV for being too racy. You could imagine the horror of townfolk who came out to the local high school music festival to find my punk band Nemesis thrashing through our rebel song "Genocide." There were about five guys in town that played an instrument good enough to be in a band and none of them played the keys.  I couldn't play anything but the drums at that point so it was goodbye to Duran Duran and my beloved New Wave and hello to the Clash, Rancid and the Offspring. On my spare time, I taught myself how to play guitar, began fiddling with the keys, and started recording solo demos on a tascam four-track.  Eventually, one of those demos got me a call from a Sony Records A&R scout.  Her praise and encouragement inspired me to persue a recording career; I was 16 at the time.

Wilson: For over a decade, immediately after grunge ruled the charts, keyboards had become as appealing as cancer in alternative music. Why do you think synth-fueled acts such as the Killers and the Postal Service are reeling in the youth of today as opposed to the generation of the '90s?

Velez: Yeah, the '90s reduced the keyboard to a mere computer accessory rather than a musical instrument. If you brought a keyboard to a rock show, you definitely were getting a wedgie and a purple nurple (Titty Twister for the laymen out there).  It was unfortunate, but necessary for today's rebirth. I mean, I missed Robert Downey, Jr.'s career as well.  Now look at him go: Iron Man, Tropic Thunder, and all. Everything works in cycles. I am happy to fight alongside the best bands out there like the Killers, getting folks riled up about a new sound utilizing the forbidden instrument.  Almost makes me feel dirty (laughs).

Wilson: What is the origin of the name White Noise Radio?

Velez: The name White Noise Radio refers to the broadcast of everything overlooked within us.  If you sit out under the stars one night and actually

I'm an outlier, sure, and yes, the average person (oh man, 53% of the world's population is 29 and under) would not favor them - wait - 47% are still OK. 47% of the world are 30 and up. And they remember the Pointer Sisters.

Well, I'm not saying that all of that 53% are oblivious of PS (pointer sisters). PS was popular during their eras, and yes, the light rock channels still play their music. If you're lucky, "I'm so excited" will play at a wedding - and just recently - Hugh Grant did his whole little diddy to "Jump" in Love Actually. Greatest scene ever.

Corinna wants me to write that Jeff was wearing a different shirt yesterday. Like I care. I think him & Jag, etc. are absent today including Spike. We had a class meeting first period about our class rings. Baby Brain said we might have a dance-athon. That'd be cool. Ni yelled to him, "Grow a bod!" I don't know if he heard.

(I did get a class ring, but not through the school - through a local jeweler. We never had a dance-athon. I'm not sure if Baby Brain ever grew a bod.)

now i use myspace for music since i've become a music producer.  i have quite a few listeners who come to check my profile daily.  i haven't had time to actually promote my page since i'm too busy with school and work. with the upgraded version of myspace music, i think it could help me with my promotion.

i use facebook more to get in touch with my friends who are now in college.  it's much better than myspace because they have an online chat. so whenever you're online, you can talk to your friends if they show up on the online status.  although i was not happy with the newer version (i accidently upgraded when i looked at my friend's profile), i kinda got used to it.

i bet there are more site out there that can lead me to meet new people. i was thinking of the dating website; i forgot its name. yeah, match.com, but i refrained myself because it's more about dating than just meeting new people. maybe i ought to give it a try and see if i can get any result, but i won't try to date someone from there because i don't trust online dating. i prefer meeting a person face to face. physical appearance is more powerful than hiding behind the computer.

The inspiration for the collage above was playful interaction between a little guy and his comparatively gigantic companion. They are in bed, and she's reading or listening to music or working, and of course he's lazing about in a life of luxury in which he doesn't have to work, and is privileged enough to spend his days in a doll house when he's not making his keeper happy.

Lazing about in a life of luxury includes doing a bit of exploring of his girlfriend's body, and I like to close my eyes and imagine he finds something between those gigantic feet. Something he wants. Maybe something she placed there to lure him into a trap. Perhaps a bit of candy, or a cookie crumb. Guys will do anything for a taste of them cookies. :)

And when he reaches into that crevice between her feet with his bitty hand, his arm sinks in all the way and SNAP! Those soles close in on him like a venus fly trap, and... well, nothing bad happens to him after that, of course. I like gentle scenarios.

My friend Micah, Kim and I were having a nice little shopping day at the South Coast Plaza. We bought a few things, made each other laugh, and laughed at other people. As we were walking by the store Zara, Kim wanted to show us this jacket that she was absolutely in love with. We went into Zara, she grabbed the jacket tried it on and we "Oooed" and "Ahhed" at her in it. It was a cute jacket that was red and long with big silver buttons. I think Micah really liked the silver buttons because he was staring at them...uncontrollably. He likes shiny things.

Anyway, I decided that since I didn't get Kim and Andy a wedding present yet (and since Andy never wants anything I give him) I'd buy the jacket for Kim as a wedding gift. So, we make our way to the check-out line. There was only one person waiting in line in front of us. I often find standing in lines a bit awkward, so I usually start small talk with the people I'm with.

As we were talking about something meaningless all of a sudden my eyes struck gold: The most hideous person I may have ever seen walk this planet stood right in front of us at the check out counter. She was a middle-aged woman wearing black spandex pants (She was clearly wearing granny panties), a black fanny pack, a black tank top, and some black low top 80's style pixie shoes. The sad part about this situation is that I just bought a new pair of pixie shoes five minutes before we walked into Zara. All of a sudden I was ashamed to have bought the shoes. I must say that her resemblance to Cruella DeVille was amazingly close. Sooo…we shall call her Cruella for the sake of this story. Cruella was a lady who obviously thought she had some amazing style because she was talking so loud you'd have to be deaf to miss her. And even if you were deaf you'd have to be blind to miss her. She craved attention, and she definitely got it. I was stuck staring at her, feeling weird inside, as she was happily standing at the counter trying on this red jacket. Then it hit me, it was THE jacket we were about to purchase. I quickly look back at Kim who was standing there looking at Cruella, praying that she wasn’t going to buy it. I then began to vocally express my sincere amusement of this incredible situation when Kim pointed out the fact that the Cruella and I already own the same shoes. That quickly shut me up, and I started feeling alone and incomplete. Then all of a sudden I hear her voice saying something to someone and Micah kindly tells me that the lady was speaking to me. So I turn around with the jacket in my hand, and she says, "amazing jacket isn’t it?" in this loud pitch voice. She kind of sounded like a very flamboyant gay man. I thought in my head "obviously it's amazing or I wouldn't be standing in line waiting to buy it,” but all that came out of my mouth was "Yep".

Now picture this: I'm standing in front of Micah and Kim in line and I'm holding the red jacket by the hanger with my index finger. This lady takes off her red jacket and tosses it on the table in front of her and walks over to me, stands in front of my face and says, "May I?” Before I could even answer the question, Cruella takes Kim’s jacket off of the hanger and she slides her arms into it and gracelessly frolics over to the nearest mirror. I'm assuming the jacket that she was trying on earlier was too big for her so she thought she could just take our jacket to see if it fit her. So she is modeling the jacket in front of the mirror and her hands are grasping the collar of the jacket as she sways back and forth switching up her feet while stopping to pose every few seconds.

Now do me a favor: Press the tips of your index finger and thumb together making an okay sign with your hand. Your other 3 fingers should be slightly curved but for the most part standing straight up in the air. Now slightly hang your wrist. Good. Now imagine a red jacket in between your index finger and your thumb holding it out in front of you as if it smells of feces. This is exactly what she does. She takes the jacket off, holds the jacket just how I told you to do it, and she throws it in my face. I was caught off guard because all I could hear behind me was Kim and Micah chuckling about what was going on and Kim saying "noooooo please don't put it onnnnn, nooooooooooo." Then I hear Micah saying, "Oh shet, she is putting it on!"

So all of a sudden I feel this jacket hit me as Cruella prances away with her nose in the air  straight back to the register without saying anything else to me. No, “thank you” or anything. Then she turns around to us again and she asks me if I was buying the jacket for my sister. I heard her say it, but I had my back turned to her and I wanted to make her feel like an idiot by making her repeat herself a few times. Then she asked again, and then finally the third time Micah was like "ummmm, Monique, I think she’s talking to you again."  So, I finally turn around and say, "yes, it’s for my sister". Then right when u think this lady is going to leave she turns around very quickly stands on the tips of her toes, and yells "TRAAAAVIIIIIIIIS!!!!!" across the store. Now let me tell you, Zara is a pretty calm and quiet store. Wearing high heals alone in that store causes a ruckus. So she yells his name and goes running over to him with one arm out in the air. I'm going to assume that he was her personal shopper/helper.

We bought the jacket and got the hell out of the store. Till this day Micah will frantically yell out "TRAVVVVIIIIISSS!!!" and wave his arm for no apparent reason, and we all have a great chuckle about it. I have yet to see Kim wear the red jacket. A part of me wants to blame it on Cruella but then I come to my senses, and realize that it's still summer time. There goes my theory. As for my shoes, I wear them and I love them. But every time I wear them Cruella Deville pops in my head holding a Capri Cigarette with the long plastic filter and Travis standing by her side.

Simply put, rent this movie. It’s got performances by Diane Lane, Laura Dern and Ray Winstone — waaay early in their careers — that display why they have been so successful over the past two decades. It also bursts with so much energy, style and damned good punk (members of The Clash and Sex Pistols wrote half the songs on the soundtrack and appear in the film) that it re-invigorates the familiar plot into something fresh and exciting.

Ladies and Gentlemen... tells the story of the rise, fall and return of Corinne “Third Degree” Burns (Diane Lane) and her band, The Stains (Laura Dern and Marin Kantner), while she negotiates her identity, the jealousy of an experienced and cynical singer of a rival band, and the exploitation by the media and a corrupt manager (David Clennon (The Thing, thirtysomething)). 

Diane Lane’s character enters the film full of spit and fire; she is rebellious youth from the get go and suffering in small town Pennsylvania. But she's got a plan, a vision that involves a "just Rock and Roll, and The Truth." And her vehicle is The Stains. They hook up with The Metal Corpses, 70s glam has-beens, and The Looters, punks stranded in America and headed by a young, less corpulent, Ray Winstone.

When Corinne takes the stage sporting a skunk hair-do, Siouxsie Sioux eyeliner, fishnets and see-through blouse, and excoriates the crowd that she doesn't put out, she inspires hundreds of disaffected youth to do the same — to stand up and take no guff from anybody. The media picks up on this and runs with it. And all this in a month!

Needless to say, the movie is filled with great performances both acting and musical. It made me want to create my own Stains cover band. And the early 80s punk styles are amazing. The hair, the make-up, the clothes. Everything. And while the entire movie is worth watching, I found the ending music video especially memorable; it's such a video of its time, but also because we get to glimpse the characters a little further down the road from what the bulk of the film deals with, and it's the most satisfying conclusion.

A second-runner up for best scene in the movie is where Christine Lahti, playing Diane Lane’s aunt, gives a TV interview. It’s heartbreaking for its honesty and allowing us a glimpse into the character's backstory. It's brief, but powerful.

And the movie wouldn’t have worked without the chemistry between Ray and Diane. Ray's character has been struggling a long time to gain success, but it has eluded him; when Diane's character seemingly captures success practically overnight, it wounds him. However, they are both attracted to each other; when she hears his band perform, she is enraptured; it spurs her on to cement and embrace her identity as Punk.

There's this amazing scene where they share a motel room, and at one point they are on the bed in close proximity starting to undress, and he is reaching out to her, quoting the lyrics of his song; she asks for the lyrics and he becomes evasive, so she moves to the bathroom and slams the door, cutting him off. But when he reveals that he can’t read, she opens the door wearing only a towel. She then enters the shower, and starts telling a story from her past; Ray enters the shower also naked, and the scene ends with a passionate kiss.

As the scene plays out, they are undressing, literally and metaphorically, revealing to each other very personal things; also, the barriers between them grow less and less both physically and metaphorically. It's the closest the two characters get and is very tender.

So I guess that’s three scenes.

Anyway, I highly recommend this film. If you’re curious about the early careers of its future stars, or if you love good punk music or the 80s style, or even if you don’t, you really need to check this out.

Three and a half out of five stars.

A Banda britânica, um dos nomes mais importantes do pop nos anos 80, não se apresenta no Brasil desde janeiro de 1988, quando tocou em São Paulo e no Rio de Janeiro, na primeira edição do festival Hollywood Rock. Alguém lembra?
Os "Durões Durões" ("estão caindo aos pedaços", disse uma certa amiga) desembarcam no Brasil com Simon Le Bon (vocal), Nick Rhodes (teclado), John Taylor (baixo) e Roger Taylor (bateria). Da formação master, só não vai dar as caras por aqui o guitarrista Andy Taylor - Pudera, o sujeito largou a tribo em 2006.
Os show em terras brasilis fazem parte da turnê do álbum "Red Carpet Massacre", lançado em 2007. Mesmo contando com participações de artistas mais contemporâneos e em evidência (Justin Timberlake e Timbaland), o disco não empolgou muito, ficando lá na "rabeira" das paradas de sucesso.

Na década de oitenta, o Duran Duran se tornou um dos maiores nomes do cenário pop internacional, vendendo mais de 100 milhões de discos internacionalmente, durante sua carreira. O auge do sucesso se deu entre os álbuns, "Rio", de 1982 e "Notorious", de 1986.

Na "agulha" neste post, a faixa que eu considero uma obra prima do Duran Duran:"Come Undone". Um  primor de produção no estilo da época, uma faixa com melodia e ritmo extremamente envolventes. A letra, dizem as lendas urbanas espalhadas pelo cyberspace, foi composta por Le Bon para homenagear sua esposa, a bela modelo Yasmim.

Uma belíssima canção de amor com partes da letra com significados bem claros e outras com sentidos vagos como, "Signed, with a home tattoo"; "happy birthday to you was created for you".

Eu arrisco traduzir "Come Undone" nessa canção como sendo algo, um sentimento, que pega você de surpresa e o deixa completamente descomposto, atordoado, "desmantelado".

Lauren and her little sister Sara origionally had these seats because they attended Miley's Birthday and didn't try for tickets as seatfillers like I did although they were given some good fortune. Lauren is quite the ideal concert attendee, she sings and dances and acts like a complete fan; which lead concert hosts to ask her if she would like to move up with her sister to the pit for the rest of the taping.

They were lucky enough to have front row to the catwalk at first, and eventually thoughout the 18 song set (each of the 9 songs was recorded twice) they were able to have front row seats in a 10,000person+ arena.

Most of Hannah's performance outfits for Season 3 seem to be very 80's hip with one being country. All of her outfits were adorable besides one half blue half pink dress that was slightly questionable, but knowing that it's a Hannah Montana concert and not Miley, Hannah can get away with wearing anything (and she does).

^^The Dress of Question. I think it's great as a performance dress, but would an average 16 year old performer wear that on stage?

Overall, whether you were there for the taping or wound up finding the videos on youtube, it's clear to see that dispite the controversy surrounding Miley as an individual, as a 15 year old girl she truly has made a name (and a brand) for herself that captures everyones attention. Her performances at Verizo were flawless and her voice becomes more in tune and superb each time. I personally can't wait to watch season three of Hannah Montana and see what they have up their sleeves for the show. From what we have seen from the performances, it will be a great season that I will tivo every episode.
