Today sees the UK DVD release of the fourth and final series of Battlestar Galactica (BSG).

I became hooked on BSG after watching the three-hour mini-series written and produced by Ronald D Moore and directed by Michael Rymer in 2003.

The mini-series was the first part of the Battlestar Galactica reimagining based on the 1978 Battlestar Galactica television series, and served as a pilot for the 2004 television series.

I was never a fan of Stars Wars, Star Trek, Deep Space Nine et al but something about BSG captured me. The storyline was gripping, the acting was good and although there were plenty of special effects they didn’t overshadow the plot.

The mini-series was set 40 years after humans won the war against the Cylons (robots). It’s revealed that since the war, and their subsequent disappearance, the Cylons have gained the ability to mimic the human form.

The Cylons launch a massive attack on the 12 Colonies, forcing all the survivors to retreat to the skies. These survivors, led by the Battlestar Galactica, try to escape the obliteration of the human race and start on a quest for lost colony of Earth where they hope to find peace.

I became such a fan of BSG that I ended up (rather proudly) as an official playtester for the roleplaying game based on the series.

The game was developed by Margaret Weiss Productions (Margaret, the creator of the Dragonlance Chronicles was already an icon in my view) and luckily my little band of gamers and I got to playtest the game while it was in development.

My job as playtester and GM involved emailing the writers with feedback on the game, spotting the literals and choosing between different images for the artwork. I was among five GMs that took part in the playtest and the only non-American one.

I was so chuffed when the game came out because as my surname begins with ‘A’ I was at the very top of the thank yous in the credits (I even showed the bemused bloke in the shop when I bought the book).

But, game aside, I love the concept of BSG and unlike other TV shows I watch (for example, 24 and Heroes) I don’t feel the show has declined in standard as the episodes rack up. I’ve deliberately avoided watching the series on Sky (I get too annoyed with all the TV breaks) so I can have a mini BSG marathon. So it’s time to buy the popcorn, unplug the phone and hope the fourth, and final, series will live up to its predecessors.

Christopher Hayes on the shifting free-trade consensus among economists.

Roderick Long explains why small is beautiful. And by the way, everything this guy writes about economics is well-worth reading.

Rod Dreher notes the permanent deployment of a brigade combat team to the United States. According to the Army Times article he links to, the brigade is training for riot suppression and quelling civil unrest. This is a scary-sounding development, but I'm not sure how worried we should be. Glenn Greenwald sounded the alarm on this issue several weeks ago, and was promptly taken to task for misinterpreting a mundane domestic deployment. But Dreher brings up a compelling article from the American Conservative on how legal barriers to long-term homeland deployments are being gradually eroded. I'm not sure if Dreher's post is foolish alarmism or due diligence, but this Bill Adama quote from BSG seemed particularly appropriate:

There's a reason you separate military and the police. One fights the enemies of the state, the other serves and protects the people. When the military becomes both, then the enemies of the state tend to become the people.

Indeed.

Lost

Entourage

Dexter

Life

Battlestar Galactica

Dr. Who

South Park

Real Time with Bill Maher

Heroes

House

Chuck

Scrubs

The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson

30 Rock

The Big Bang Theory

Family Guy

Extras

Nip/Tuck

The Sarah Connor Chronicles

How I Met Your Mother

The Simpsons

Reaper

Raising The Bar

In Plain Sight

Torchwood

My Name Is Earl

Little Britain

Shark

Two And A Half Men

Smallville

Californication

How Not To Live Your Life

Knight Rider 2008

American Dad

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart

The Colbert Report

Greek

Do Not Disturb

Mad TV

Saturday Night Live

Secret Diary Of A Callgirl

90210

Monk

Psych

Curb Your Enthusiasm

Flight Of The Conchords

Gossip Girl

Eureka

The Riches

Serenity

The West Wing

Seinfeld

Jericho

Arrested Development

Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Das also der Plan. Stop wasting time! 18 Favoriten, 31 gestrichen. Nicht schlecht.

Best regards, Mario

I can't believe the original Terminator was in 1984. I loved that movie then and got such a kick out of Arnold and the storyline. I also loved what the writers did with Linda Hamilton's character, Sarah in T2 and got her out of the helpless chick role to being the butt kicker with defined arms. So, when you start with such a beloved movie and storyline, it goes without saying that you need to tread carefully when doing a follow-up franchise like Terminator, the Sarah Connor Chronicles.

First off, I'm thrilled they simply started after T2 as if T3 never existed. Let's be serious. T3 never did exist, did it? I am finding the new actors on the series have done an incredible job of doing the character and then making it their own. In other words, I believe. I love all the terminators from the movies to the series and in particular, Summer does a fabulous job and rivals Arnold in T2 for likeability.

So how about the storyline? I'm starting to get confused, and the time travel is making me time-lagged as they say. So, really, how does the AI start, and did it have anything to do with time travel? Although they can not physically bring anything in their travels, they can certainly build things and bring many future-state ideas like encouraging scientists to do and make things they didn't think possible. That's changing the future. So if no one did the time travel to protect John, is it possible it wouldn't have happened? Or is it simply that certain things are meant to happen, one way or another, and all attempts at changing that course will only be met by other events that will still ensure it happens? A bit of destiny, yah?

And where is the present day John in 2007 when 15 year old John jumps ahead to try to prevent Skynet from starting?

Perhaps they explain it in a later episode, however I only started on Season 1 DVD's and I'm liking it so far. Thank goodness for DVD's of great shows like this, BSG, and Dexter - otherwise, I really would have barely a thing to watch.

If I could travel ahead or behind, what would I want to do? Truth? I can't imagine skipping ahead or doing a redo. That's what makes this life special, just the way it is. I get to go through it once, and learn from it. Afterall, if I'm going to make mistakes, I'd rather commit to them big-time and then learn from them. I find it's those big mistakes that really make an impact on the course of your life anyway. Besides, what's the worse that can happen? I wipe off all the humans on earth in a battle between human and machine? Get real. BSG is battling that one and both sides are still around.

Alrighty, after some weeks of more or less draught on the spoiler-front, things get stirred up quite

Alrighty, after some weeks of more or less draught on the spoiler-front, things get stirred up quite a little lately. So, once a gain a little drive-by spoiler round-up, just in case you missed it:

The dreadful Miss Park spilled in an interview at the Emmmys, that not all humans in the fleet will go all cuddly-wuddly with their new cylon allies. Now that's a surprise.

Even more exciting: John Hodgman of 'I'm a Mac - I'm a PC'-fame (the PC) will have a cameo in one of the next episodes, apparently playing some doctor.

OK, those were just teasers of course. The somewhat more real(?) deal is brought to us by the words of Aaron Douglas, who obviously enjoys giving interviews as a means of mindfrak. Here's the deal in short form (highlight between double-colons), check the interviews and/or io9's writeup for details:

:: Yup, it's Earth :: (Told ya)

:: Apart from being Eart, it's also the Cylon homeworld, according to scripture :: (Uh-huh)

:: The Final Four (at least) are original Cylons, meaning, really, really old, and unique (as in no multiple models) :: (OK...)

:: There might be more than one Earth :: (Mindfrak. Period.)

SyFy Portal adds to that the following:

:: Not everything is always as it seems :: (Duh!)

:: The Final Cylon might be revealed as soon as the mid-season premiere :: (Figured.)

:: The final episodes will continue to deal with the fleet's search for (that other) Earth :: (see above, Mindfrak)

Should you find this confusing, go ahead and read through the linkage. Or, as Charlie Jane Anders phrased it:

That loose-lipped Aaron Douglas spilled yet more details about the tail end of Battlestar Galactica,

That loose-lipped Aaron Douglas spilled yet more details about the tail end of Battlestar Galactica, on a podcast and in an interview with SFX magazine. He told SFX:

The four that were revealed at the end of season three are what they are, but they're one-offs. They're the original Cylons. Hundreds of thousands of years ago, when there were 13 colonies on Kobol, 12 went that way and one went that way to found Earth — or create an Earth — and that colony was actually Cylons. They're individuals, there's no multiple models. The seven that we know are a different kind of Cylon that came much later. They're probably ten, 20 years old, born out of the metal machines that fought back in the Cylon wars of the 12 colonies. So they're essentially like the gods. And we were on the new Earth, and destroyed that and came back to the 12 colonies to rejoin humanity to find the cycle of time.

Why do we create a world and destroy ourselves? Why does humanity do that? And why do we as Cylons follow that path to humanity? So we sort of turned off the Cylon part of us and went and joined the humans. They don't know we're Cylons, and we didn't know until we started getting closer to Earth — that's when we started hearing that music at the end of the last season and get woken up to the fact that we are.

My head? Now spinning.

Douglas told the podcast that Earth is "the Cylon homeworld." The humans find skeletons and stuff, and they're all Cylon skeletons.

Also, when you see the last episode of BSG, you won't ever want to see the show again. Because the ending is that perfect.
The truth is, I was so pissed that Sci-fi was dragging out the end of BSG, I sort of turned my back on making anything. Well, I am pretty much over myself and I am thinking of ideas for what to do with her now that the fleet found Earth. I hope to have something new by the end of the week end!

Again, all I can do is apologize for the long-ish absence but on the one hand the other life caught up on me big time (in the bestest of ways!), and on the other hand there's a little online-side-project in the pipeline you'll hear about soon enough :) Oh, and also apologies to the Skiffy girls for not showing up lately, same reasons apply.

But of course I don't return (even if ever so briefly) without bearing gifts:

Some Entertainment News from the News Feed.

Warehouse 13 Gets Green Light.

The series stars Eddie McClintock and Joanne Kelly as Secret Service agents charged with securing a huge, top-secret South Dakota storage facility full of supernatural artifacts and relics.
Warehouse 13 is produced by Universal Cable Productions and is executive-produced by David Simkins. Brent Mote, Jane Espenson and Simkins wrote the pilot, with Jace Alexander directing.

Great, this is Jane Espenson new project that was announced sometime ago. Of course it will bring new comparisons to overrated "The X-Files" (Season 1-3 are actually really good, and 4 and 5 still watchable, anything after the first movie, just forget about it).

I'm kind of wary for David Simkins work, but I trust Jane Espenson, who I hope will insert a good amount level of the funny in this show.

ABC greenlights new show, Flash Forward.

The network has given a pilot order to the spec script by filmmaker David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight) and "Star Trek" veteran Brannon Braga.

Based on Robert J. Sawyer's sci-fi novel, "Flash Forward" is considered very compatible with "Lost." It chronicles the chaos that ensues after everyone in the world blacks out for 2 minutes, 17 seconds and has a mysterious vision of the future that changes lives forever.

Goyer will direct the pilot. He also will executive produce with Braga and Jessika Borsiczky Goyer (NBC's "Revelations") along with Vince Gerardis and Ralph M. Vicinanza (Jumper), who own the rights to the book.

Goyer and Braga in a new team up after CBS' "Threshold", which did have a very interesting concept, a great cast, sadly they got lost somewhere in between, and was just one of loser players in the fall season filled with a lot of complicated high concept serialized shows, after buzz making success of Lost.

ABC is already looking for a potential filler for Lost, something that would attract the same audience, as we're closer and closer for the final days of Lost. Onto this, news media tend to fret too much about "OMG, Lost is not performing that well on ratings, at least not as well than back in Season 1". I don't get where this worry is coming from. The Lost fans are exactly the fans that would look for alternative ways to get the content, including online viewing or the DVDs. It's a show better watched without the ad-breaks (year, advertisers, should fret a bit here), with episodes marathons. It's a show that require commitment from the viewer from the beginning to the end, unlike any CSI-procedural, that even with some ongoing storyline with some of the characters, you don't need much to just insert yourself in at any point in the season or the series.

Back to "Flash Forward" it sounds interesting, hopefully won't get the demise that other high concept serialized shows end up as something not as compelling.

Jude Law in talks for 'Sherlock'

Law is expected to close a deal shortly to play Watson, the super-sleuth's sidekick.

I can't remember when was the last time we had a decent "Sherlock Holmes" movie. The cast is quite promising.

Poster Revealed for "Revolutionary Road"

Scope out the new movie poster for Revolutionary Road, the upcoming drama reuniting Titanic duo Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. Titanic was the biggest film in box-office history back in 1997, so Leo and Kate have a lot to live up to!

According to USA Today, “Road tells the story of a young, successful couple living what appears to be a thriving life with their two children in 1950s Connecticut.

Mostly all the buzz about this movies is only about reuniting these "Titanic" cast mates. I remember the day that Leo DiCaprio really bothered me, but I have to admit he got really good on his craft. I really enjoy Kate Winslett career choices, but I'll always remember her as the unforgetable Clementine, instead of her romantic heroine Rose from "TItanic".

Colombian Telenovela "Cartel de los Sapos" chronicling the saga of the rise of a drug cartel in country.

As the most high rated show in Colombia right now, despite the polemic theme (wonder if it will get under radar of some us tv exec, or wonder what the guys from "Entourage" could think about it. As it seems is not ok to to foreigners to talk about it, but there is no problem if they talk about it themselves.

The telenovela is actually based on real facts, slightly twisted, but basically chronicles how the Cartel de Los Sapos (The Frog Cartel), ascended in the country between the 1980s and 1990s decads, overtaking the Medellin and Cali Cartels, the leaders and their girlfriends and their conflict witht he police, how they become one of the largest Coke sellers in the world, their effect on Colombia, and truthlly show how some of their founders used to be cops.

Ning Six on probleemidega mõrd, mul on tunne, sest tal on vaja vist nagu igat piffi ilgelt läbi peksta, aga midaiganes eks.

Mu Nano ideeks tuleb space opera-laadne asi. Ja 100 000 sõna. Rohkem väga ei tea. But things will most likely get really frakked up. :D

Tata for now.

http://welfareandeconomics.wordpress.com/2008/06/02/warmwasseranteil-im-regelsatz-urteil-des-bsg-vom-28022008-b-1411b-as-1507-r/

zum o.a.

Yesterday's silence wasn't because I was having a silent day -- it was because I wasn't home. As usual on a Saturday, I hung out with my middle sister, running errands, finishing up with a marathon viewing of the Season Four episodes of Battlestar Galactica she'd captured with her DVR.

At one point, after a particularly twisty twist, I turned to her and said, "I want to write stories like that when I grow up." On some level, I believe that if I could pick BSG apart, it would be a master class in plotting and characterization. Among other things, the series doesn't let me slot characters into Good Guy/Bad Guy buckets -- everyone important is a little of both. And everybody is changing -- but how could they not, faced with everything the writers have flung at them?

Which is a lesson unto itself: fling things at your characters to make them grow and change. The growth and change are your character arc, which lies at the heart of your story.

This semester I'm taking one subject from Business Faculty, Strategic Business Management. A tough subject for a guy who doesn't know much about the business theories and concepts like me. But it's a really cool subject, especially when I'm getting bored with so many theories in IT management.

What special about this subject must be the Business Strategy Game, an online business strategy online game accompanying with Thompson, Strictland & Gamble's "Crafting & Executing Strategy" book. This is a turn-based game in which 1 turn represents 1 year. Each team of players must make decisions for each year and the result each year will be calculated based on how competitive each decision is (price, quality, advertising budget,...)

I still don't understand every aspect of this complicated game, so I'm playing 2 other games to learn more about the complicated business world. These 2 games are Monopoly Tycoon and Capitalism II.

Of those two, I highly recommend the Monopoly Tycoon for beginners since it's easy and quite fun to play.

Capitalism II is much more complicated with full of business stuffs.

Hope that someone out there is playing these games, online playing against human must be much more exciting :D
