From Boston.com's 'The Big Picture', a collection of beautiful photos from countries celebrating this holy month;

Muslim faithful throughout the world are currently observing the holy month of Ramadan. Observant Muslims participate in fasting (sawm), one of the five pillars of their faith, this entire Lunar month (this year it extends from September 1st to the 30th). Eating, drinking, smoking and sexual activity is prohibited from dawn until sunset, when the fast is broken with the evening meal called Iftar. Local customs define varying traditions, including differing types of food used to break the daily fast. The fasting is meant to teach a person patience, humility and sacrifice, to set aside time to ask forgiveness, practice self-restraint, and pray for guidance in the future.

Emerson is totally freaked out. We're at my parents' house, and there are folks dove hunting in the field behind their house and in the field at the end of their street. My dog has a debilitating fear of firecrackers and guns. It's rather embarrassing considering that he is a beagle, but he never was "gun trained" when he was a puppy, so the noises literally make him quiver and incapable of walking unless I am in the room with him. Apparently, I am a bastion of safety and comfort. He has cried off and on all morning, and he was hiding under Laura's little Ikea play table earlier. I feel horrible for him. If my grandparents weren't coming over later for a family dinner, I would totally whisk him to the safety of our inside the city-limits home where no one is hunting in the field behind our house.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Prayer request:

I won't see much of my husband at all this week, which means I will have Laura on my own pretty much until Thursday and then again Friday and Saturday. This is the first week of Mother's Day Out, so I have that level of stress (which I laugh at the idea of it being stressful, but I know it will be).

Do me a favor, though. Do not pray for patience. I don't want to be put into situations that require patience! :) Just pray for a guard over my mouth and for restful sleep. Thank you! :)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Turns out that I might be a pretty crappy Mom, because I let Laura watch "Veggie Tales." You could not possibly imagine the looks of horror I receive because I let her watch an TV at all, much less a 30-45 minute DVD. The problem isn't Bob & Larry. The problem is that it's TV and that she is forming an emotional attachment to fictional characters who dance and sing inside of a big box.

Apparently, the 11th Commandment is "Do not let thy children watch television," and there is no addendum about it being okay as long as it is wholesome Christian programming that is teaching them godly principles.

Sigh. It's amazing what parents will say to other parents (or grandparents to other grandparents in this specific case -- I was informed by Mom what another set of grandparents thought of our Larry lovin' daughter).

All I know is that my daughter claps to and "sings" along with the Veggie Tales worship CD. She loves to see Bob & Larry on the TV. She is excited about Veggie Tales in a way that nothing else on TV has ever excited her (even commercials for the new "Little Mermaid" movie). And I'm okay with that. I'm okay with her enjoying TV. I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with it. I think what we choose to watch and how much time we choose to spend watching it is when we cross the line into sin. But using TV and movies to teach my child about Jesus -- I will never have a problem with that.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is an elephant in Andover Woods. Just thought I'd let you know. It's really big, and no one can seem to find it, but it's there.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My friend Angela wants a pet hippo. Well, my exotic pet of choice is a cheetah. I was reading about them the other day in Smithsonian, and they are remarkably adaptable to life as a pet. Originally, I would choose to domesticate a gray wolf, but this cheetah article was pretty compelling. I think it would be much more exotic of me to have a cheetah anyway, and I think that considering where I live, it would make more sense to bring an African animal to Texas summers than a gray wolf. It just seems kind of mean to make an animal with that much fur live in Texas.

Angela's hippo is named Dolly. My cheetah is named Wyatt. I like that name. If I weren't so afraid of my son getting is butt kicked every day for being named Wyatt, I would name him that. But a cheetah named Wyatt could hold his own in a fight.

I woke up and took a look around my office. The furniture was stark and simple, none of the comforts

I woke up and took a look around my office. The furniture was stark and simple, none of the comforts I'd got used to in Heimatar. Out here in Stain life is more frugal. Supplies are limited and travel can be difficult. I felt the need for comforts, though, so I looked at my wallet. Ten million ISK. I wasn't broke but it wasn't exactly a fortune. The only solution was to head out into the black of space and look for some of Sansha's henchmen. The bounties that CONCORD pay for these deep space outlaws would help rejuvenate my wallet.

I undocked in my Wolf class Assault Frigate. This ship is pretty much the epitome of Thukker design philosophy. Lots of guns, no room for electronic warfare, and plenty of room for damage upgrades. I fly mine in a slightly unusual passive shield configuration when I'm out hunting for Sanshas. It does the job very nicely and I can take down even the toughest battleship eventually although things are much easier with friends. Assault ship ratting is something my alliance has a bit of speciality in. Its a very useful skill to have, especially these days as our local space is filling with hostiles and getting pinned down in a belt would mean certain death. These light, relatively-agile frigates can escape quickly, though, at the first sign of trouble.

There was plenty of trouble today. I started out looking for rats, as they're known, in the belts of our home system but the local channel had too many hostile elements in it for me to be comfortable. Instead I looked into a side system that we use regularly. Again, it was hostile. Next up was a system deeper into Stain. Another hostile presence. There was only one possible destination left now, a system that branched off from both our home and our hostile neighbour's home systems. Amazingly it was empty and I settled down to the task of grinding down Sansha's minions. Occasionally hostile ships passed through the system but I was able to either get myself to a safe location or head back to our home until the danger passed.

Eventually a Muninn entered the system. This heavy assault cruiser was far more than I would be able to take on in my little Wolf so I headed to a safe location and passed the intelligence on to my alliance. An alliance friend jumped into system in his recon cruiser to try and locate the Muninn and quickly the hostiles began to stir. The hornet's nest had awakened. The next ship into the system was a Vagabond, followed quickly by a Rapier. These are two of the Minmatar's fiercest cruisers and I got the feeling I was being hunted. My recon support headed back to our home system and reported that a Sabre class interdictor had set up on the gate. I was being camped in. The Sabre was joined by a Vagabond and I was trapped up against our enemy's home. I stayed as deep as I could, away from their scanners and looked for deep space probes with my own scanning systems.

Another covert ops pilot from our Alliance reported that the other gate out of my ratting location was also camped by a Vagabond and Sabre duo. I had absolutely no chance and my only option was to lie low and hope they'd get bored. It took a while but eventually they did and, my ratting session ruined by this aggression, I headed back to base feeling frustrated at the lock down that had been imposed on me.

Upon arriving home we formed a small covert ops gang to head up to Empire and provide an escort and reconnaissance for a new corp mate who wanted to bring a ship down to our station. I hopped into my trusty Cheetah and undocked. We headed up to meet him without encountering any resistance and were able to get him through the uncamped gate with hindrance. The journey back to Stain was pretty uneventful. We passed a friendly camp but again got through without difficulties. It was three jumps from home that we ran up against another road block. Obviously annoyed at their failure to kill me our neighbours had locked down their system. There was no way that we'd be able to get our friend's new Ishkur through safely so we had to turn back and drop him off at a local station system that would be friendly enough for him to explore in the future.

Life in 0.0 seems to be full of these frustrations. Some times it can be almost impossible to get anything done. We are surrounded by enemies and hugely out numbered so they can almost effortlessly ruin our fun and we have very little in response other than picking off their stragglers or joining in when our allies attack them.

On the plus side, I knew that tomorrow my training for interceptor class ships would finish and I have a Claw and Stiletto waiting for me in Rens. No-one was going to stop me from trying them out tomorrow.

It was an overcast Saturday in August when my wife and I visited Hever Castle.

We went because we spotted an advert showing that they had a special African event with some African birds of prey and a Cheetah doing a running display. The castle visit therefore became part of an extended night away together while our daughter spends a night with her grandparents.

Two things made the castle visit more relaxing for us as a couple than any other attraction we have visited in recent years; the lack of a child and the lack of a camera. We were now able to admire everything without constantly keeping a four year old entertained and safe and being free from the desire to try and get the best shot possible of every photo opportunity is strangely liberating, even if its not the mode of choice.

Due to the aforementioned night away, we arrived at midday to find parking in a field, being well directed by visible staff. Parking was still very close to the entrance and ticket booths. The ticket queue was significant with about 20 minutes waiting until we got our hands on our tickets. Ticket prices are reasonable with adults paying about £10 each (add £2 if you want access to the Castle included in your entry) and children £6 with under fives free.

The gardens are very well kept with interesting hedge designs that even children will admire. There is plenty to wander about and do and adventurous youngsters will have no end of places to explore. The water maze is small and easy to solve, but that's not really the point. Having sat and watched many kids enjoy it, having fun and getting wet seems to be the order of the day rather than engage in stimulating challenge.

The Castle is interesting and very informative with some spectacular artifacts on display and plenty to learn if you are weak on the history of Anne Boleyn. However the whole experience is feels rushed due to the way in which the Castle rooms are sectioned off and you are routed through in a specific way. There are probably some good reasons why this is done, but I much prefer to wander if a more random fashion and spend my time in rooms that catch my interest without being conscious that I am getting in the way of a queue of people behind me. Over half an hour should be allowed for this tour, just hope that the young one with you does not need a loo break halfway round. The really big downside to the Castle visit is the queue to get in, we didn't see it reduce at all over the lunch period and when we joined it the wait was over half an hour before we started the tour. I think that adding an extra cost to the castle visit means people feel they must do the tour to get the full value from their ticket and since the relative increase in cost is small, people feel they may as well pay the extra, the result being the huge queues experienced. Hever have made a mistake doing this and they should have a single price for everything.

The birds of prey display was not up to the standard of that experienced by us 2 weeks prior at Warwick Castle and some occasional sound issues further compounded the disappointment. This is a shame because I can never tire of watching birds of prey climb and swoop, be it in the wild or at a show. It was clear that the majority of people were there for the Cheetah display and having a Cheetah out in the open air to run for crowds and raise awareness of the plight of Cheetahs in the wild is a great idea. The Cheetah on display was a young Cheetah and it was obvious we were not going to see a spectacular example of a Cheetah at high speed. Judging by the reaction of many in the crowd, not everyone appreciated this subtlety and obviously expected far more than they saw.

Refreshments:
The restaurant on site was massively over subscribed, thankfully we had enjoyed a huge breakfast beforehand and didn't need to break for lunch. The grounds offer many places to enjoy a family picnic and thanks to the close proximity of the car parks, sending dad back to the car to collect lunch is a very real possibility.

In Summary:
Definitely worth the visit and somewhere I will visit again.

We stocked up on provisions at Outjo(settled in 1880). There was a yummy German bakery there, and lunch was sausage rolls and meat pies. Mmmm. By late afternoon we reached the Cheetah Park. This conservation project is run by a farming family. The boys of the family grew up there, and have taken over most of the dealings with visitors. There was a young giraffe that the family adopted as well after they found it wounded and caught in a fence. We got a brief history of the place and the cheetahs, took some photos with the tame ones, then watched as they were fed hunks and blobs of bloody meat.

Afterwards, we got in the back of a jeep with a small trailer to see the wild cheetahs fed. The guys got out armed only with a piece of rebar as protection and threw meat to the kitties that had been following the jeeps since we got outside the fencing. Drinks at the bar that night went to support the cheetah program, so we were more than happy to help. We were introduced to the springbok this night (a shot consisting of peppermint schnapps and Amarula). A few of the single gals giggled, flirted and chatted up the boys behind the bar (some perhaps more than that) and a good time was had by all.

When it comes to storage, Tom's Hardware gets it.

It's not because they chose Seagate's Cheetah 15K SAS and Barracuda ES SATA drives for their Big Guns of Business workstation platform. It's that they understand the truly revolutionary benefits of SAS and SATA in combination.

Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) is taking workstations (and servers, and storage systems) where SCSI never could because of native mix-and-match compatibility with SATA.

That means you can have screamin' SAS, massive SATA, or both. And change it up tomorrow if you want.

More and more system vendors are getting this. Strongly consider SAS-based systems from here on out.

I found another really cool article on The Topless Robot. It’s “10 Reasons No One Care

I found another really cool article on The Topless Robot. It's "10 Reasons No One Cares About Wonder Woman." I'll give you the rundown of the list but make sure to check out the article yourself. It has really good examples of each case.

10. Her costume sucks (Scary blue patriotic granny panties ftl!)

9. No good storylines

8. Most comics are terrible (from what I've seen I agree)

7. Golden Age Wonder Woman was really lame

6. "Her Lasso of Bondage" (omg it's so true, I mean seriously that lasso reminds me of how much of a hoe Stacy X (Apparently known as Ripcord now) is in X-men. Also has anyone ever noticed that Wonderwoman's boots are so just red hooker boots? Somtimes really tacky hooker boots but still.)
[caption id="attachment_716" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="She's gonna get ya!"][/caption]

5. The Invisible plane sucked (How dumb of an idea was the invisible plane I mean really!)

4. Terrible normal villains and almost no super-villains

3. Steve Trevor isn't hot are desirable in any way (why is he in that comic, clearly she's a lesbian people! I mean come on Amazon princess.)

2. No sidekicks or cool butler friends to speak of

1. She's just a girl version of Superman (and Superman really sucks, seriously Batman could totally kick his ass any day of the week. It's why he never joined the Justice League. ;) )

I'd like to add one to the list actually. She has no real secret identity. One of the main good things about superheroes is that they have to hide their secret lives from their loved ones so that

A. They don't think they're a freak and leave them ;) and
B. So no super-villian decides to kidnap them and hold them for randsom or kill them.

Plus isn't the whole part of a super heroes secret identity supposed to make them relateable and nobody wants to relate to a blue granny panty wearing Amazon that wears hooker boots! Does she ever wear normal clothes?

JUST RECEIVED WORD-“Morning Break”, below, has been accepted into the Mendocino Art Cent

JUST RECEIVED WORD-"Morning Break", below, has been accepted into the Mendocino Art Center Animal Art exhibit! It will be on view there in Mendocino, California from Sept. 3-27.

AND...if you live in central Humboldt County, tonight is the opening reception for Wild Visions 2, a group show of nationally recognized nature and wildlife artists, including yours truly, at the Umqua Gallery, Arcata from 6-9pm. Lots of new work by all of us and some oldies, but goodies too. We snagged a great feature in the local paper this morning!

The other artists are Linda Parkinson, watercolor, who has done many commissions of birds and had her work published in American Falconry magazine; Shawn Gould, acrylic, who has done freelance art for National Geographic; Paula Golightly, oil and acrylic, whose day job is working as a biologist for the Fish and Wildlife Service; John Wesa, well-known local serigrapher; and Derek Bond, egg tempera, who has recently had work accepted into the first Artists for Conservation juried show.

This is the first time all of us have shown together and we hope it won't be the last.

BACKYARD BIRD WATCH

The two Allen's hummers are showing up right around 1:30 every afternoon. How do they know? Can you imagine how tiny their wristwatches must be? Right now, if I only had room for one hummingbird friendly plant it would be Crocosmia "Lucifer". If you have a little room for a truly red, red, red flower, you might buy a few bulbs.

WHAT ARE THESE? Answer on Monday

Cocorico

Ivory Triumph

Lichterlich

Lili Marlene

Mazeppa

Leaping Salmon

Oiellet Panachee

Hamburger Phoenix

GREAT QUOTE

"Am writing an essay on the life-history of insects and have abandoned the idea of writing on 'How Cats Spend their Time'."

Here at Gustafun, we pride ourselves on being able to tackle difficult problems. Since some of us do

Here at Gustafun, we pride ourselves on being able to tackle difficult problems. Since some of us don't have jobs we are able to devote an inordinate amount of time to doing just that. Some examples include: Which family member should eat off the floor with the cat? Who shot JR? Out of Alvin, Simon and Theadore, who is will most likely die in a fiery hot air balloon accident?

Well, now you may behold our newest contribution to the world of problems that have been solved. I give thee "Top 9 Sexiest Cartoon Characters". Thank me later.

Number 9: Cruella De Ville

Why she is on the list: She's a classy broad and she's loaded. Under those mounds of puppy fur is a petite woman who wants nothing more than to be snuggled by a warm fire on a snowy night. Also, When was the last time you saw a woman with a 2 tone hair style that didn't get your attention? And, not to mention she smokes cigarettes from one of those really long cigarette holders. Remind anyone of The Great Gatsby? Me thinks yes.

Number 8: Velma Dace Dinkley

Why she is on the list: I know what you're thinking; "If I was going to fornicate with an original member of the Scooby Doo, Where Are You! cast it would totally be Daphne." Well, my friend, that is simply a short sighted response. Freddy would totally beat your ass and strangle you with his neckerchief if you ever tried to touch her. But, because Freddy is an Aryan, he wouldn't give two shits if you went off on a romantic weekend with Velma. Besides, Velma is very hip these days. She's got that nerd-chic look with the short hair and thick glasses. She would probably go to a Weezer concert with you.

Number 7: Mulan

Why she is on the list: For starters, Mulan is absurdly flexible. If you've ever seen the movie (and I can assure you that I have) she does some pretty impressive stuff. Fooling around with Mulan would pretty much be like fooling around with Gumby but less homosexual (because Gumby is a dude, right? Isn't s/he?). Second, if you hear something in the middle of the night, don't get up! Mulan will investigate for you. She knows how to kick ass (as evidenced by her very flexible fight scenes).

Number 6: Patty Mayonnaise

Why she's on the list: Three words- blonde, blonde, and tan. The creators of Doug knew what they were doing when they conceived (no pun intended. Ok, maybe a little bit.) Patty. She's got slim legs, a slim waistline and goddamn is she blonde. Inside sources have told me that she was originally modeled after Marylin Monroe and the program was canceled before the episode where a high school age JFK kicks the shit out of Doug Funny for eye humping Patty during social studies class.

Number 5: The Cheetah

Why she is on the list: Easy. That's why- she's easy. When was the last time you met a woman who wore animal print anything and wasn't easy? Never? Thought so. The Cheetah is the arch-nemesis of Wonder Woman and a member of the Legion of Doom, so you know she can get you into some of the baddest clubs in town. Plus she wears a skin tight suit with cheetah print on it. Cat Woman always dresses in all black, which is pretty lame. Actually, it's pointless. If you're going to pretend to be a cat then you might as well pretend to be the fastest cat on the planet. Which probably means you're the fastest woman on the planet. Zing!

Number 4: Jessie from Johnny Quest

Why she's on the list: Without Jessie, Johnny Quest is pretty much just a big sausage party. Look at Bandit's eyes. Tell me that dog hasn't seen some horrible things. He has. There is only room for one redhead on this list and I had to give it to Jessie. She comes from superior genes (those of Roger "Race" T. Bannon) and not to mention she's sassy. She can keep up with Dr. Benton Quest's witty banter and still have time to look foxy. Sorry Lois Griffin, Jessie is the only redhead for Gustafun.

Number 3: Storm

Why she's on the list: Storm is pretty much the Pamela Anderson of the X-Men franchise. And when I say "Pamela Anderson" I really mean, "The only reason why I know X-Men exists whatsoever." Got ADD? Then she's the woman for you boobs. She can tit change the weather- which is a nipple awesome super power. Not to mention that breasts she's always wearing that skin tight suit. And plus she's got the crazy eye. And her knockers are absurd. Boobs.

Number 2: Laura Croft

Why she's on the list: I know, I know. Lots of people think she should be number 1. She is insanely hot and has a disproportionately hot body. I know, I've heard it all before so you can save it. Look, Laura is hot. Really really hot. She deserves a spot on this list, where ever it maybe. The only reason why she loses points is because of those gun holsters on her hips. See those? See that strap that comes down mid-thigh? Can you say tan lines? Gross. The hottest cartoon characters do not have tan lines, especially a stripe in the middle of their thighs. Sorry Laura. Don't worry, I'll call you later.

Number 1: Betty Cooper

Why she's on the list: Aside from being absurdly hot, it is well known that Betty Cooper and her friend Veronica Lodge were the first bi-curious comic book characters in American history. This makes them pretty revolutionary as well as insanely hot. It is also well known that Archie Andrews is about as straight as Richard Simmons, so he's not going to care if you take Betty out for a night of DNA swapping. Thank you Betty, for being a sexual pioneer and inspiring Britney Spears to become Britney Spears. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Honorable Mention: Sheri & Terri, Meg from Family Guy, Ariel, Jasmine, Jessica Rabbit, Judy Jetson, Betty Rubble.
