Seekor monster tanpa diketahui jenisnya dan asalnya dari mana, tiba-tiba datang ke Manhattan, menghancurkan semua isi kota tanpa pandang bulu, menghancurkan hampir setiap bangunan di Manhatta: patung Liberty (kepalanya copot dan parkir di tengah-tengah jalanan, jembatan Brooklyn yang hancur, dan masih banyak lagi. Plus, monster ini menghasilkan monster-monster kecil yang tak terhitung jumlahnya yang juga sama ganasnya. Keselamatan seluruh warga terancam (udah pasti), dan pihak militer tidak dapat menghancurkan monster ini dengan peralatan yang ada, mereka terpaksa mengevakuasi seluruh warga kota, dan membumihanguskan kota.

Dalam proses pembuatan “Cloverfield”, kerahasiaannya sangat dijaga ketat, entah apa maksud dan tujuannya. Mungkin pengin membuat penonton yang sudah menonton teaser-nya terlebih dahulu semakin penasaran untuk menonton film ini. Teaser-nya sendiri dipublikasikan di pemutaran perdana film “Transformers”; teaser-nya hanya menampilkan kepastian tanggal rilis filmnya tanpa judul. Film ini di-edit sedemikian rupa agar seolah-olah keseluruhan film diambil degan menggunakan handycam.

Well, ”Cloverfield” beneran seru, walaupun sedikit pusing ketika menontonnya, karena kamera yang bergoyang-goyang dan kadang berputar-putar tak menentu. Hehe

When the Centers for Disease Control quarantines a small apartment building, television reporter Angela Vidal (Jennifer Carpenter of Dexter) and her cameraman (Steve Harris of The Practice) are trapped inside.  The two learn that an unknown disease has infected a tenant and several pets belonging to other tenants.  The infection continues to spread, causing tenants to attack every living creature that comes in their way.  Jennifer and Steve fight for their lives, but when CDC finally lifts the quarantine, the only evidence of what took place is the news crew’s videotape.

Directed by John Erick Dowdle (of The Poughkeepsie Tapes), Quarantine is filmed from the perspective of the cameraman in a style reminiscent of Cloverfield and The Blair Witch Project.

The film remakes the 2007 Spanish horror film, REC, for American audiences.  REC won the screams and praise of many critics but is little known in the United States.  Filmmakers tried to raise awareness of Quarantine in March by releasing two anonymous videos chronicling a viral incident, Case 1017.  More than one million people watched the videos, many believing the incident to be real.

Quante volte vi è giunta un'email strana di una petizione, o di un gioco/applicazione web da provare perchè divertente? Bhè quello è il viral marketing, un meccanismo pubblicitario basato sull'antico passaparola, che oggi coinvolge la rete e la sfrutta a dovere. Le tecniche si affinano e i pubblicitari si strofinano le mani. Ma tale tipo di strategia oltre a creare lanci pubblicitari di qualsiasi tipo attecchisce benissimo al cinema. tutte strategie per incuriosire il cliente finale e coinvolgerlo il più possibile fino al raggiungimento dello scopo:ovvero vendere il prodotto. Diciamo che alcune trovate sguazzano nell'imbroglio bello e buono, tant'è che molti degli utenti coivolti in tali progetti si annichiliscono, si sentono usati e vittime di una geniale presa in giro. Invece alcuni si coinvolgono a tal punto che si sentono fieri una volta smascherato il fine, di essere stati coinvolti nel CONTAGIO o di aver contribuito ad alimentarlo. Diciamo che oggi, molti di noi hanno l'occhio lungo poichè abituati a tali tipi di comunicazione, ma le tecniche diventano così sopraffini che all'amo i pesci abboccano sempre.Gli esempi di Viral Marketing più interessanti sono quelli cinematografici, che montano a tavolino milionarie campagne promozionali suggerendo, facendo passare storie false per vere, lasciando le briciole per portare lo spettatore al cinema.Uno dei Viral cinematografici più riusciti è di sicuro il lancio del film THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT nel 1999. Ricordate quel film su una strega girato da uno che aveva il parkinsons? bhè è lui! Inizialmente bastò mettere dei piccoli trailer su Internet, YOUTUBE su tutti spacciando quei filmati per veri. Poi quei furboni dei produttori stamparono migliaia di volantini che chiedevano aiuto per trovare quella ragazza scomparsa, e il gioco fu fatto. Tantissimi internauti e non, furono sensibilizzati dalla storia, ci fu un incredibile passaparola (detto buzz marketing) anche oltreoceano, dove finti internauti (in reltà pubblicitari pagati dai produttori) riempivano i forum di domande su questa storia e spargevano, dietro centinaia di nickname falsi, notizie, e-mail anonime, video, curiosità....e tutti puntuali andarono tutti a vedere il film tanto discusso. La strategia aveva attecchito e guerra fu. Gli elementi cardine della tecnica sono:creare suspance, lasciare poche informazioni e tante supposizioni,insinuare e lasciare più tracce possibili ovunque. Ci fu anche il caso nel 2005 del film DANNY THE DOG, per il quale, fu creato un finto sito: salviamodanny.org (oggi non esistepiù) che inscenava una finta petizione per salvare un ragazzo scomparso coinvolto in lotte clandestine a mo di cane randagio. Tantissimi firmarono la petizione e circolarono pure tantissime finte e-mail sul caso, per poi vedersi dopo poco al cinema il "vero" Danny combattere!

Di recente vi sono stati i casi legati al nuovo BATMAN,The dark night, e il nuovo INDIANA JONES che hanno ben combattuto a colpi di viral, ma un altro dei casi più riusciti proviene dritto dritto dal genio creatore della multimilionaria serie tv Lost, j.j.Abrams col film CLOVERFIELD, dove finti teaser, e sopratutto blog e siti falsi hanno spopolato in rete. Addirittura sono stati creati diversi siti fantoccio che parlano d'altro e adirittura una bibita inesistente la SLUSHO! che col film non ci azzecca nulla ma che in qualche modo la si fa collegare ad esso. Leggere la montatura creata per questo film fa capire al meglio fino a dove tale tecnica si spinge. Io stessa in questo momento in fondo sto facendo VIRAL MARKETINg....!

This film definitely has a Cloverfield, meets Saw II, meets 30 Days Of Night feel. Sometimes when you try to mix up a couple hits and a miss in a blender like that it comes out all wrong. However every now and then it turns out great and I think this is going to be one of those cases. That said keep in mind what this film is not - it is not a instant classic or a genre bender like Let The Right One In (That I saw at VIFF and it was everything I expected). It is a popcorn flick through and through, and there is nothing wrong with that. Make sure to check out Quarantine this Friday, and make sure to check out Super U's 'The Horror!' contest that opened earlier this week for all your quick fix horror needs.

Eu tenho um vício. Seriados. É besta, eu sei, mas eu sou completamente viciado nessas novelas americanas. Veja bem, tudo começou com Lost. Antes disso, eu só assistia os seriados de comédia quando passavam na Sony ou na Warner Channel.

Um dia eu vi Lost na AXN. Claro, assim como milhões de pessoas, eu pirei com a série e por causa dela eu sou hoje completamente viciado em séries. Eu sei a programação diária da televisão americana, pois assim eu sei quando eu posso acessar meu portal favorito de torrents e baixar as séries que passaram no dia. Geralmente, eu estou somente horas atrasado. Acho que mais viciado que isso são os caras que fazem as legendas para esses arquivos que baixo pela internet.

Enfim... meu vício por Lost rendeu-me mais que isso. Por causa da série eu pude conhecer o trabalho de um excelente profissional da área, J. J. Abrams. Junto com Jeffrey Lieber e Damen Lindenlof, ele criou a série mais badalada da televisão. Desde então, onde o cara põe o dedo (ui!) a coisa chama muita atenção. Foi assim com o terceiro filme da série Missão Impossível e com o seu mais recente projeto, Cloverfield.

Este ano ele voltou para a TV com o seriado Fringe. Fringe conta a história  de uma turma muito doida aprontando altas confusões da agente do FBI Olivia Dunham, Peter Bishop e, seu pai, Walter Bishop. Juntos, o trio investiga diversos incidentes iguaizinhos aos de Arquivo X nada normais que estão ocorrendo com muita frequência no mundo. Assim como Lost, o seriado passa a impressão de algo maior está por trás de todos os acontecimentos da série. O episódio piloto da série é sensacional. Eu garanto.

The Dark Knight is by far the best movie to come out this year, surpassing other great movies such as: Iron Man, Wanted, Indiana Jones (which wasn't actually all the great), The Incredible Hulk, and Cloverfield, just to name a few. It is under the flag of super hero movie but is soo much more. It combines Action, Humor, Drama, Romance, even a little Horror, and becomes possibly one of the best films of all time. The late Heath Ledger would be proud if he could watch the film in all its glory but his memorable role as "The Joker" will definitley go down in history as not only his best but one of the best on-screen villains of all time. This movie has already grossed more than the titanic did within the same time and if it continues on this path it will surely take the place of the highest grossing films in the world.

Y para terminar mi fin de semana tuve que comprarme estas dos cosas una es porque soy masoquista y me gusta lo que a otros no y la otra porque me salió en 100 pezones

Oh yeah!!

The point is there was a time in the early 90's where differentiation of excess and consumption was clear, simply put;money was tight for the masses. Therefore defining excess as far as consumption was relatively easy, some had it, most didn't (cash that is). If there was a delevarging of debt from consumers, it was the yuppies (80's and 90's) selling off their Porches. The rest of us were just spectators.

What has this got to do with the movie Cloverfield? Well just the first 30mins you get to see cashed up 20+ somethings in an insulated indulgent world, are then faced with an unprecedented dramatic event. Which, they seem completely unprepared for (as you would), but as this crisis unfolds are unable to adapt and survive, hence pretty much end up...well you gotta see the movie.

Are the writers trying to tell us something? Maybe. Cloverfield reminds me of teen slasher films from the 1980's, say Friday The 13th mixed with 1970's disaster flick Possiden Adventure. So naivety meets survival instinct, but naivety wins in the Cloverfield 'adventure'.

So whether certain aspects of popular culture, movies or otherwise will start to document the 'death of excess' in the 21st century, and how society will cope with these dramatic changes in social and economic environments, remains to be seen. Regardless, check out Cloverfield, if you haven't already. Clever movie, with some subtle but poignant undertones, especially first 30mins.

Let The Right One In (original title Låt Den Rätte Komma In), a Swedish vampire film winner of every award it's been nominated for (for now at least), is uselessly being remade in English by Cloverfield director Matt Reeves and original director Tomas Alfredson is understandably unhappy.

“Remakes should be made of movies that aren’t very good, that gives you the chance to fix whatever has gone wrong,” Alfredson tells Moviezine. “I’m very proud of my movie and think it’s great, but the Americans might be of an other opinion. The saddest thing for me would be to see that beautiful story made into something mainstream.” … “I don’t like to whine, but of course – if you’d spent years on painting a picture, you’d hate to hear buzz about a copy even before your vernissage!”

Nome de Código: Cloverfield, por Tiago Ramos

Despite the fact that it hasn't been shown anywhere except from film festivals, the Swedish vampire film Let The Right One In (original title Låt Den Rätte Komma In) is already getting a remake courtesy of director Matt Reeves aka the guy who brought us Cloverfield, one of the worst, most overrated movies of all time. Dagens nyhet som lämnat mig mest kluven är den om att Matt Reeves, regissören till Cloverfield har anlitats för den amerikanska remaken av Låt den rätte komma in. Bolaget Hammer Films köpte rättigheterna efter att Tomas Alfredsons film fick lysande recensioner efter Tribeca Film Festival. Let the Right One In är en svensk-amerikansk co-produktion och kommer ha premiär någon gång under 2009.

Cloverfield director Matt Reevess is given the unenviable task of remaking Tomas Alfredson’s fabulous Swedish vampire instant-classic, Let The Right One In. While I quite dug Cloverfield, it had a lot more going on in the aesthetic and tone department than the gimmick that it could have bee, the usual remake rules apply: I doubt that Reeves remake can find the razor thin balance of emotion that Alfredson managed. The film is delicate and I am a bit skeptical that it will survive remake mauling. The reminted Hammer Studios own the rights for the remake and are behind the production. It is interesting that they are going back to their vampire roots, but taking things in a very modern direction (i.e. subtle drama, remake, etc.)

I caught the original at Fantasia earlier this year (where it won the Audience Award, not to mention that it picked up best narrative feature at Tribeca). While I have a few minor issues with where it went at the end, I still love the movie. A Lot. Marina is expected to see it very soon and her thoughts will show up with her VIFF coverage. Likewise Andrew & I are going to watch it in October as it is on the Toronto After Dark lineup. If you have not caught the original at a festival yet, when Magnet Releasing puts it out in the cinemas: Run, don’t walk…

As you can see from previous blog posts I am very excited about this film. That said I can not see it being redone in Hollywood fashion. Big budgets and remaining of horror films tend to turn out horribly, and dilute the quality of the original. If you don't believe me go watch any J-Horror film with an american counter part. Watch the J-Horror film first and then the american remake. I think you'll find yourself rather upset and hoping that this kid ends up taking his revenge on some Hollywood producers...

Was relativ harmlos und ruhig auf einer Coktailparty beginnt, endet in einer panischen Flucht vor... ja, vor was denn eigentlich ? Doch beginnen wir mit der kuzen Einführung, welche dem Zuschauer innerhalb der ersten ca. 20 Filmminuten präsentiert wird. Rob Hawkins (Michael Stahl-David) wird von seinen Freunden mit einer Abschiedparty überrascht - er plant, eine Stelle in Japan anzunehmen. Rob's Bruder, Jason Hawkins (Mike Vogel), Mitinitiator der Party; wird gebeten den Abend per Videokamera festzuhalten. Der jedoch drückt sie Hud (T.J. Miller) in die Hand - und dort wird sie auch für den Rest des Films bleiben...

Denn kurz darauf ist es aus mit der gediegenen Partyatmosphäre (eigentlich schon vorher, es gab hier und da Streitereien) - ein großes Unglück scheint sich anzubahnen. Nunmehr wechseln sich Stromausfälle mit Erdbeben; und der damit einhergehenden Panik unter den Menschen, ab. Innerhalb kürzester Zeit herrscht das totale Chaos auf den Straßen von New York City. Rob, Jason; und viele weitere Partygäste verlassen augenblicklich ihre Unterkunft, und schließen sich der panischen Meute an - die auf der Suche nach Anworten ist. Doch bald schon wird klar: es handelt sich hier (leider?) nicht um eine Naturkatastrophe... weitaus schlimmeres ist los in New York !

Verdammt; wo bin ich hier nur reingeraten... ?

Es erübrigt sich wohl, weiter auf die Story des Films einzugehen - da diese im weiteren Verlauf im Grunde hauptsächlich aus der Flucht der kleinen Gruppe besteht, von ihrem Kampf um das nackte Überleben erzählt. Und dies ist gar nicht mal so schlecht umgesetzt; selbstverständlich untermalt mit einer riesigen Portion Action - und allgemeinem Getöse. Dabei wirkt das Ganze aber nie übertrieben bombastisch wie in manchen anderen Katastrophen- oder Horrorstreifen; da man das Geschehen stets aus der Perspektive der kleinen Handkamera mitverfolgt. Exakt das ist zugleich positivstes und negativstes "Feature" des Films. Lassen Sie es mich erklären: man kennt es vielleicht aus dem Blair Witch Projekt - ein filmisches Geschehen aus der Egoperspektive mitzuerleben ist mit Sicherheit wesentlich beklemmender - mittendrin statt nur dabei eben. Zusätzlich erlaubt diese Art der Präsentation ein Authenzitätsgefühl, wie man es sonst nur selten im Film erlebt. Es sind eben keine steril-geleckten Aufnahmen; sondern teils verwackelte und verrauschte; es kann vorkommen dass die Batterie zuende geht - der Zuschauer ist definitiv näher am Geschehen, und glaubt tatsächlich mit besagten Protagonisten in den Tiefen von New York City unterwegs zu sein.

Irgendetwas läuft hier verdammt schief...

Aber... besehen wir das große Paradoxon dieser eher theoretischen Überlegung. Stellen Sie sich vor, Sie schauen sich einen eben solchen Film auf BlueRay im 5.1 Ton an - irgendwie passt da etwas nicht. Für die Aufnahmen einer kleinen Handkamera ist das überhaupt eine erstaunliche Leistung. Denn diese macht vergleichweise gute Bilder; und wenn man es sich einmal veranschaulicht: sind doch erstaunlich wenige Wackler und Störungen vernehmbar. Bei einer panischen Flucht unter Sterbensangst würde ich persöhnlich jedenfalls eher die Kamera wegwerfen; anstatt wie der "Kameramann" hier stets versuchen die perfekte Aufnahme inmitten von Leid und Tod zu machen (zumindest wirkt das so). Ganz besonders störend wird dies auch bei den Szenen, in welchen die ausbrechenden Emotionen der einzelnen Charaktere aufgezeigt werden. Kauernd in irgendwelchen Ecken; wenn sich die Schreckensnachrichten mehren, die Angst sich ins schier unermessliche steigert; die Charaktere unter Tränen ihre Gefühle preisgeben... sicher, das ist alles halbwegs glaubhaft umgesetzt. Was aber hat der Kamermann dann bitte für eine Attitüde ? Ohne Schamgefühl hält er auch hier stets drauf, am besten schön auf das Gesicht. Man stelle sich diese Situation bitte einmal bildlich vor ! Und wieder: wäre ich einer der Charaktere, hätte ich ihm diese vermaledeite Kamera längst aus der Hand geschlagen. Aber dann gäbe es ja auch keinen weiteren Filmverlauf...

... und dieser gestaltet sich - abgesehen von eben genannten Tatsachen - mitunter doch recht spannend. Aber auch hier tauchen wieder eher typische Handlungsmuster nach Schema F auf... a'la: wir müssen in dieses Gebäude welches gleich zusammenbricht; meine Freundin ist da drin ! Optisch und technisch wie gesagt nur teilweise ein Genuß - wenn man über mein persönliches "Cloverfield-Paradoxon" hinwegsehen kann. Die Kreaturen - welche keinen wirklich großen Auftritt im Film haben - und Szenenaufbauten sind recht gut gelungen; die Explosionen und umstürzenden Gebäude machen Eindruck. Der Sound stimmt, der Cast auch. Die Darsteller spielen ihre (verängstigten) Rollen gut.

Krach, Bumm Peng. New York im Ausnahmezustand.

Lassen Sie mich zum Schluss aber noch einen weiteren, wenn nicht den größten Schwachpunkt des Films nennen: die Schwäche und Substanzlosigkeit in der Grundidee. Dieses Drehbuch hätte im Grunde jeder halbwegs visionäre Horrorfreak oder Hobbyschreiber innerhalb weniger Minuten verfassen können - denn da gehört nun wirklich nicht viel zu. Man nehme eine belebte Großstadt; picke sich eine kleinere zu porträtierende Gruppe heraus, lässt die einzelnen Personen nach und nach sterben; von einer Kraft (oder Monstern) über die man so gut wie nichts weiss - und das war's auch schon. Was ist denn eigentlich mit besagten Monstern ? Hier erhält man noch weitaus weniger Hinweise als in "The Mist" (den ich Ihnen eher ans Herz legen würde). Dazu kommen noch die eher flachen, uninteressanten Charaktere... packen wir mal einen riesigen Godzilla in die Stadtmitte, und lassen ihn wüten bis alle verstorben sind. Das ist einfach nur schwach, und nur allzu schnell aufs Papier gebracht ! Von daher: aus einem schlechten Ansatz wurde etwas mit einem halbwegs akzeptablem Unterhaltungswert geschaffen. Von mir gibt es dafür glatte 4.4/10 Punkten. Und eine "rote Karte":

- Für die nicht vorhandene Subtanz und die sinnlose Geheimniskrämerei um einen unspektakulären Film. Denn: für mich ist der eigentliche Gehalt eines Films - die Substanz - immer noch am wichtigsten. Der Inhalt, die Geschichte, erklärte Hintergründe, die Botschaft - hier gibt es davon nichts zu sehen. Ein großes Mysterium wurde im Vorfeld um den Film gemacht (keine Vorabinformationen zum Beispiel); leider zieht sich dieses fragwürdige "Geheimnis" auch durch den Film selbst...

Sehen Sie sich den Trailer an solange er noch nicht vom mysteriösen Monster verschlungen ist; kaufen Sie die DVD, oder lassen Sie es einfach bleiben. Hätte ich vielleicht auch mal besser getan.

Estou enlouquecida a procura de um roteiro simples de comédia para o meu próximo curta e não consigo encontrar. Costumo me inspirar com músicas,mas dessa vez não esta funcionando. Tenho um roteiro feminino,que não esta bom e não tenho idéia de como arrumá-lo. Se alguém souber como me ajudar,favor avisar,pq tá complicada a situação. Que fazer, que fazer... A falta de criatividade esta me consumindo no momento... completamente!

Ontem assisti o começo de Cloverfield... hmmm... assim,eu até entrei no filme,mas... monstro? Daí já me perde totalmente.. sempre acho os bichos mal feitos com cara de computador.. daí é foda de acreditar em alguma coisa... enfim... Comecei tbm a assistir o Wall Street mas já era tarde e acabei capotando no sofá. Hoje pretendo assistir Homem de Ferro quanto voltar da aula.

Sábado passado sofri e me diverti ao mesmo tempo nas filmagens de um curta de época, que foram filmados em um pier de noite, mega gelado e ventando. E eu com um mini vestido de vinil amarrada com correntes,e sendo carregada para a morte ,haha. Divertido,mas o frio tava foda... quero fotos logo e ver o filme principalmente,mas esse vai demorar mais!

E é isso pessoal,sem muito pra contar não.. a vida anda meio parada de novidades incriiiiiiveis!

Cloverfield (2008): 4/5

It certainly isn't a milestone in contemporary filmmaking, nor is the story all that original. It's far from perfect (nitpickers like myself will find a lot to well, pick) but the mystery and hype surrounding 'Cloverfield' definitely has its charms.

A harmless New Yorker yuppie farewell party goes amuck when a creature emerges without warning and wreaks havoc in the city. Don't ask me what the monster looks like because honestly, I don't remember. Just as well actually, because other filmmakers might have been tempted to cut away from the lead actors and allow more monster screentime- but not in Cloverfield.

When watching this movie, just remember: It doesn't matter if it's far from realistic (doh), it doesn't matter if it's geographically and physically inaccurate, if the shaky camera makes you wanna hurl, if the Statue of Liberty's head looked so small; it doesn't matter we didn't get enough action from spider/lobster parasites- keep in mind it was intended to be a purely enjoyable roller coaster ride (to haters, admit it- you've been had!) but with a tasteful vague air of menace.

Oh, and just for the sake of nitpicking, what was with the nice soldier guy who lets them out the back door and totally explains everything to the convenience of the leads and audience -- riiight!

Seriously, I saw this movie a few years ago.   It was called The Blair Witch Project.

Cloverfield tells the story of a group of friends who are living it up in Manhattan, celebrating one friend's new job in Tokyo when something goes horribly wrong in the city.  Things start blowing up and buildings come crashing down, and the group of friends rushes into the street to see a glimpse of a large monster doing its best Godzilla impersonation.  From there, the rag tag group has to survive crazy obstacles to survive, including their own stupidity.

What amazes me about Cloverfield is how thoroughly unappetizing fare it is.    What should have been buttery, popcorn fun is just plain gross.

Any movie like this, you should actively care about the survival of the main characters.    The idea of the introduction to our scrappy bunch of survivors is by showing them at a party, where it's painfully evident that they're shallow, self-absorbed types who have some randomly interspliced love problems to keep things predictably interesting, in a way.   So, right from the get go, you think to yourself, "Right...I should care...why?"

That's a problem.   Oh, and they have crap taste in music, which certainly doesn't help matters any.

And when the big bad monster starts destroying New York skyscraper by skyscraper, the conversation descends into less of "Dude!   Bro!  MAN!"   and more into, "AIIIIIEEEEEEEEEE, OHMIGOD OHMIGOD OHMIGOD" for thirty minutes straight.

Me:    "AIEEEEEEEEE.   When are you all going to die?  Hurry up.   I've got another terrible movie waiting to be watched."

Then the little monsters that spawn from the big monster come out, and the characters make the most infinitely stupid decision imaginable - head into the subway tunnels.   They get picked off, one by one, in a grueling testament to my patience and ability to grind my teeth into a fine powder.   By the time one dies via stomach explosion, it's easily apparent that everyone is going to die.

Oh, wait.   There's still another 45 minutes left to the movie.   Filler time.

So the characters are left zig-zagging around Manhattan, trying to rescue a friend and board a helicopter, and you get a subtle, Jason-esque "Gotcha!" moment, where the remaining survivors believe they're free and then are pretty much bitchslapped by the monster into Central Park.

At the end of the film, you're left with two characters professing their love before Central Park and the rest of Manhattan is carpetbombed to destroy the monster.   Fun!

I was actively cheering for the monster to win by the end ("Go, big grey thing, GO!").   That's how shallow and single-layered these characters are; the dumb guy is dumb, the best friends truly ARE in love, and the nasty, bitchy outsider is ... nasty and bitchy.

Not a moment of it is really, truly terrifying.   If you could get a good visual lock on what's going on, that would certainly help.   Most of the movie is set at night from the perspective of a handheld camcorder, so it's not exactly easy to make out what's going on.   Further, this whole "civilian footage" thing would be infinitely more appealing to me had we not already seen this for The Blair Witch Project.

Now, I'm not a professional - I have no film degree, no (real) writing experience, no great depth or understanding of film criticism in general.   I watch movies and I write about the impressions I get.   After 1,400 plus movies, I think I can honestly say that if your story really blows, your movie is going to really blow.   They do a lot of things right:  minimal shots of the monster to heighten tension, using the whole shaky-cam shot by a Real!Person! effect to create confusion and chaos, and so on and so forth.   But the general outline of the plot doesn't feel good to me; it feels weak and like the monster should be the star attraction, but it's really not.

The problem is that to make an effective movie like this, you have to have something to care about.   We've all seen monster movies before; we've all seen New York Gets Destroyed movies before.   Hell, we all saw big chunks of New York get destroyed in real life.   The trick is that you have to make it feel fresh to feel scary.   There's nothing new or exciting about Cloverfield whatsoever, aside from some intelligent marketing.
