With music that is self proclaimed as "blues for people who don't like blues," this explosive musical trio from Winnipeg, Manitoba never fails to impress.  The Perpetrators are  currently comprised of guitarist and lead vocalist Jay Nowicki and bassist Ryan Menard.  They parted ways with their drummer Chris Bauer in early September and are currently searching for a replacement.  They have released 3 albums: A self-titled first album, the sophomore "Gas and the Clutch" and their most recent work, "Tow Truck", released in 2007.

      The first time I saw a Perps show was at the late and great Tongue and Groovein Lethbridge, Alberta.  Their presence was immediately felt as Bauer started the plodding and powerful drums to their instrumental masterpiece: "Scratch the Surfish".  Filled in with Menard's smooth bass line and Nowicki's disgustingly sick blues stylings on guitar, they had the audience captivated from start to finish.  The power of this band to command a live venue is uncanny and their road experience is a clear asset. 

      One particularly amazing aspect of the Perps is their ability to improvise.  Along with Nowicki's unbelievable solos, the band takes technical difficulties and turns them into show stopping stage tricks.  At the show I mentioned above, near the end Nowicki's mic went out (as was customary at the TnG),  but instead of panicking, the band started to play really quiet to accommodate the un-amplified vocals.   The show went from crunchy blues jam to an unplugged acoustic set without skipping a beat!  The audience reaction was amazing, instead of losing interest at the drop in volume, you could hear a pin drop in the crowd because they were so engulfed by the pure energy the band was sending out.

      When I saw the band again in Vancouver, Nowicki used a similar trick where during a solo the band became gradually quieter and he walked out into the crowd.  His guitar went quieter still until it was completely off, then he proceeded to play a "silent solo" only to be heard by the people in the front row (Glad we showed up early that day!)

    Aside from electrifying live shows, The Perpetrators also display some incredible songwriting chops.  Having been nominated for various achievements such as their Western Canadian Music Awards nominations this year for Outstanding Blues Recording and Outstanding Independent Recording awards.  Combining clever lyrics and grooves that make you want to tap your feet and sing along (and maybe bust out the occasional air guitar), the Perps are sure to come home with some hardware.

Every 3 years camp professionals from around the world gather together to share their knowledge on camps and camp programs. Chuck and Alina Ackenbom, owners of Camp Friendship in Palmyra participated in 8^th International Camping Congress in Quebec City, Canada held on October 4-7, 2008.

More than 600 delegates from Canada, Russia, Japan, France, Mongolia, USA, Ukraine, China, Mexico, Venezuela, Australia, Colombia and many more spent together four wonderful days packed with workshops, sessions, entertainment programs, and sightseeing tours.

CLOSE TO 10 MILLION CANADIANS DID NOT BOTHER TO VOTE!!!

OTTAWA — Early figures indicate Canadians avoided the ballot box more than ever before on election day.

Just 58 per cent of eligible voters visited the polls — from a high of 69 per cent in Prince Edward Island to 48 per cent in Newfoundland, according to preliminary numbers.

The all-time national low — until now, it appears — was 60.9 per cent in the June 2004 ballot that saw Paul Martin’s Liberals secure a minority government.

Voter turnout in federal elections has steadily dwindled, with only the occasional hiccup, falling to 64.7 per cent in the January 2006 election from a high of 79.4 per cent in March 1958.

While chilly weather may have been a factor during the wintry vote two years ago, that didn’t seem to be a problem Tuesday.

“It was pretty nice weather right across the country, and that usually means pretty good turnout. Certainly from what we were hearing out East, people were out and voting,” James Hale, an Elections Canada spokesman, said before all polls had closed.

“It’s like Christmas to Santa Claus, it’s a good day when people are out voting as far as we’re concerned.”

More than 1.4 million people cast ballots in advance polls.

It was unclear whether stringent new proof-of-identity requirements seriously affected the overall turnout.

Hale said the agency put a lot of effort into informing people about the identity rules leading up to the election.

The notion that all Arabs are Muslim could not be further from the truth. The same logic would be like saying that all Italians are Catholic or all Israeli's are Jews. The fact is that, in every society there are those who do not adhere to the religion that is dominant in the land. There are many Americans who are Muslim, Buddhist, etc. There are Israeli’s who are Christians, Muslims and Jews, etc. Currently, approximately 2 percent of the Israeli population is Christian. Furthermore, there are sizable portions of Arab Christians in countries such as Lebanon (30%), Syria (10%), Jordan (8%), Egypt (6%), Iraq (3%)1 and many other Middle Eastern, North African countries and around the world.

Anyone who wears a turban (man) or scarf (women) is an Arab or Muslim

Not everyone who wears such garments as a turban or scarf is Muslim. Although Muslims still maintain the use of such garments, a vast number of people around the world still wear them. People from the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, as well as, those who have settled in the west still keep step in their traditions of wearing such garments. Many of them are not merely Islamic citizens but also Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Sikh and even all together non-believers in religion of any sorts. Muslim men are not required to wear such garments that one may associate him with Islam by his attire and one may meet them not realizing he is a Muslim unless asked. Furthermore, to assume that if one who wears such garments is Arab is yet another mistake. Many may be African, Indian, Indonesian, Turkish, Russian, Israeli, Syrian and American as well as from every other nation on the earth. Muslims do not have a style of dress although we do have a dress code of modesty.

All Muslims are Arabs

The total Arab population, in 21 predominately Arab countries in the middle east and North Africa, is estimated to be 200 million. There have been some thousands scattered in countries around the world. Approximately 11 percent of all of the people of Islam are Arab! Citizens of Islam (Muslims) span one third of the worlds population and come from every nation and nationality.

The fact is that even in the time of the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.) not all Arabs came to Islam and many Non-Arabs did come to Islam. Some of the most respected Muslims of all time were Non-Arabs. One of the most respected Muslims, and authoritative, is Bukhari who was a Russian Muslim! His collection of the accounts of the life of the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.) (or Hadith) are known to be the most authentic because of his strict scrutiny.

Although there are large portions of Arabs in the Middle East and North Africa, 11 percent means that Arabs are in the minority in Islam! Islam is predominately Non-Arab and the most culturally and racially diverse religion in the world. This statistic is remarkable considering that Islam after 1400 years of invading crusaders and the many diverse views has remained unified. The sense of brotherhood supersedes our differences and unified under One Unique God.

Venne a crearsi un feeling speciale: Lady Chiara cantante, el granma bassista Corso, la batteria di Maurizio Cave man, la chitarra Fred di Federico…

Chiara, calda voce femminile che adorna e fa sue le canzoni (rendendole specialmente uniche e belle!!), è la Voce, il microfono, la guida canora per uno sfrenato e 'ray-charlesiano' batterista dal sorriso costante e dall'allegria innata, per un bassista dalla profonda spiritualità alla Jonathan Livingstone e per un chitarrista sempre intento ad inseguire donne di cuori e fazzoletti da prestigiatore e, fra le pause, a scribacchiare testi secondo l'alba o il tramonto (ricordandosi Hemingway…)…

Questi sono i Rosebud, allegri complici, vecchi diavoli, tocco femminile…offrono la loro dipendenza musicale solo per il gusto e la necessaria voglia di suonare, solo per il gusto di inseguire la musica della Musica, sempre avidi di risate e di qualche birra insieme, in una parola: Rosebud.

Se, come dicevano gli antichi, la musica è l'alta forma artistica nella sua più totale riproducibilità, un quadro musicale, un racconto, una storia, un sogno, perché non provare a viverla? Questi sono i Rosebud, questi siamo noi.

So, a few posts back I quoted a friend of mine who said, "As far as I'm concerned, dating a guy in The City is like dating a guy in another country."

She doesn't mean that the people are different, or the dialect is hard to get used to, she means that it's physically hard to see a man when they live in The City and you in the the country. First of all, I work a lot; if I'm not teaching, I'm grading papers, emailing parents, working on final grades. Second of all, to go into The City is close to twenty bucks round trip; I don't really have the money to pop in-and-out at my leisure.

The Prep has been begging me to come into The City to see him. I keep telling him that I would, if I could, but he caught me at a really busy time in my life. I just started a new job, I have all these "rookie-teacher" responsibilities; I don't have time on the weeknights to go see him, and recently, even my weekends are full of school stuff.

Sure, I like him. But, this is becoming sort of aggravating. We're talking online and he tells me he asked a bunch of friends about "our situation"--his family (um, yes, we went on one date and he asked his family about me...) told him to court me (like that answer!); but he said, of one of his friend's answers, "she doesn't really think you want to see me because if you did, you would have." I was really pissed when I read that. I made it very clear that a) I'm not looking for a serious relationship, but just to meet people; b) I'm busy; and c) that I do like him! I email him every morning, we text all day, I send him funny little quotes from school...it's not like I'm ignoring him, or anything close to it.

Furthermore, it's getting on my nerves that every time we talk he asks when I'm "coming in." How about just let it lie for a few minutes and then let's see what my plans are. Or better yet...how about you come visit ME?! What a novel and revolutionary idea!

I find myself reassuring him that I like him more and more, while he's wondering why I can't just come see him, all the while I'm getting more fed up. The more he asks, the more I don't want to see him. It just makes it a bigger and bigger deal each time he asks. I feel bad, guilty, and sorry for something I didn't even do!

I just found it odd that he asked people about what to do...the answer is pretty clear: you come visit me, if I won't visit you. It's the writing on the wall that must be covered by graffiti in that big City of his! Ha.

I sometimes wish that I lived in the city, so that I could dress up more. I mean, I know that I can wear whatever I want no matter where I live, but the fact of the matter is that wearing certain things at the coast will just get you strange looks. And while I'm used to people staring at my tattoos (it's not that common here for a girl to have a full sleeve), having people stare at my outfit does make me a bit uncomfortable.

I used to live in a small country town, and it was even worse there. Wearing anything even slightly out of the ordinary would bring rude stares and snide comments.

But then I try to focus on the positives. Living near the beach means that I can wear certain things that would be out of place in the city. For example, I can go down to the local shops barefoot if I want. I can walk around in a bikini if I feel like it. Could I do these things in the country or the city? Well... yes, but I would get some weird looks. Here it's just normal.

Jolie Holland - The Living And The Dead

The Living & the Dead is a work between worlds, of moving on and finding something new, of missed chances, and promises on distant horizons. From the past (the haunting simplicity of "Love Henry,"which Bob Dylan tells us pre-dates the Bible) to the future (the stunning emotional complexity of her song,"The Future"), the Texas-bred singer-songwriter navigates a new rock approach that is built upon the folk, blues and jazz spectors that populated her three acclaimed previous albums.

Holland composed these songs in her old home town of San Francisco, as well as on the road across North America and Europe. A few were born during a writing retreat in New Zealand. Arising out of her life stories, and from the rich estuaries of the mysterious tales of other adventurers, her songs are grounded by true experience.

The Living and the Dead is an exhilarating ride with a higher voltage than the previous albums, music that had already left fans and critics at a loss to describe her singular vision as performer and writer. Holland worked with co-producer Shahzad Ismaily (Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Two Foot Yard, Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog) in sessions both in Brooklyn, New York and Portland, Oregon. With contributions from guitar maestros Marc Ribot (who played with Tom Waits and Elvis Costello) and M. Ward (who also produced one song and helped shape the sound of others) and drummer Rachel Blumberg (M. Ward, Bright Eyes, the Decemberists), Holland has created an album that serves as a career statement. Holland's voice is the same beautiful instrument, which has never before sounded so confident, relaxed or emotive.

With 2003's Catalpa (essentially home-made demos released due to popular interest and then nominated for the prestigious Short List Music Prize by Tom Waits), 2004's Escondida and 2006's Springtime Can Kill You (which Rolling Stone said "feels better than a good cry"), she evolved a sound that existed in its own time, as if it could have been recorded anywhere between God knows when and yesterday. The Living & the Dead shares that same quality, but its timelessness is rooted in the present. Take Holland's description of the song “Your Big Hands”:

"It's just terribly naïve—it’s the kind of song Daniel Johnston made me feel brave enough to write," she says. "It starts out with these beautiful dirty guitar chords from M Ward, almost like a Rolling Stones song...the overall feel of this song owes a debt to Waits' version of rock ala 'Downtown Train'...then, in the middle of the song, all that has disappeared...you feel as though you're wandering around in the woods--there are owls and shooting stars…but then the song burns out with a mess of distorted guitars.”

In many ways, this album is a chronicle of her own journey. The driven "Corrido Por Buddy" (about a friend who sunk so far into addiction that Holland didn't recognize him on the street) is both character study and self-examination/recrimination – a sense magnified for the singer by not just one, but two instances of eerily identical poltergeist phenomena in the studios while the band was recording "...Buddy." The phenomena were witnessed by three band members, and occurred both in Portland and New York, during the song's production.

"The Future" is a presentation of beautiful poetry which arose out of personal misery – "When I wrote that I was really kind of crying and holding on to the piano—it’s about the hell of breaking up and moving out at the same time.”

"Palmyra" is a prayer for the broken-hearted and traumatized, both individuals and communities. The first half paints a picture a love-lorn traveler pulling herself back together after a disastrous affair. The second half is lovingly and respectfully dedicated to the hard-pressed people of New Orleans' Ninth Ward, hallowed estuary of some of the finest music the world has ever witnessed.

Upon hearing the completed album, Holland says, "I hear a lot of interesting connections between the songs that I didn't premeditate. 'Sweet Loving Man,' (a very modern love song, based on South Louisiana dance music) is sitting right next to 'Love Henry' (which is ancient as hell.) The first song is about a lover who sets out to attempt a life free from heart-break, by any means necessary. And the second is a twisted tale of a scheming rich woman who kills her lover in a fit of jealousy. It's like putting two opposite colors next to each other on a painting.”

The perceived space between ancient and modern seems to fade away. If something speaks to you and is meaningful, dates can become irrelevant. In that way, Holland's work has always been characterized as timeless. This album lives and breathes through memories of the past via reflection and resurrection, and grows into the present tense. The Living and the Dead reflects those timeless elements that make Holland's songwriting so powerful. It's multi-faceted, emotionally rich, and a continuation of one songwriter's existence within her own worlds and outside others. Enjoy Yourself.
