Cont’d. from page 33

RS: Moving on from Bono—

DL: I already have. I wish the rest of the world would, too, but no—U2 is like, like . . . the Band That Wouldn’t Die.

RS: I’d think that would be the Stones.

DL: Yes, yes, touché. But moving on . . .

RS: Moving on: you name Bowie as your rock star inspiration. What is it about him specifically that fires the supervillain mind?

DL: Consider the alter egos he created. Ziggy Stardust. Aladdin Sane. The Thin White Duke. Those are all perfect supervillain identities! Believe me—before I became Dr. Lava, I was going to be the Thin White Duke.

The unattainable inspiration: Bowie.

RS: What happened?

DL: Come on—look at me. I might be able to pull off the last two, but “thin?”

RS: You do have more of a . . .

DL: Go on . . . say it.

RS: A Frank Black physique going.

Musical genius and non-supervillain Frank Black.

DL: Well, at least he’s a musical genius. I thought you were going to call me a bald Jerry Garcia.

RS: Perish the thought. So Bowie is the most common rock star inspiration among the supervillain clique—

DL: Please. I wouldn’t call us a “clique.” It’s not like we go hang out at the mall together and make fun of the ugly kids.

RS: Is that what happened to you in your teenage years?

DL: Let’s just leave it that I wasn’t part of any “clique” in high school. Though I didn’t spend much time at the mall, either.

RS: Where did you spend your time?

DL: I’m a supervillain. A mad scientist. Where do you think guys like me spend our free time as teenagers? In the chem labs. Making compounds . . . melting things . . .

RS: And that’s where your name first enters the public discourse. You were caught trying to make napalm in the chemistry lab after school.

DL: I was still a juvenile when that happened. Those records are sealed.

RS: But you did brag about that while ransoming U.N. Headquarters.

DL: Oh, yes. I didn’t realize the cameras were still rolling. But it wasn’t really that big of a deal. So the janitor came in just as I was about to begin testing. So I got busted. This was the '80s, before all the school shootings and whatnot. My older brother used to bring a bowie knife to school and get his jollies throwing it at people . . . and juuuuust missing. He'd laugh and say, "William Tell!" And he never made the news.

RS: But napalm?

DL: Trust me—those were different times. “Boys will be boys.” I did my community service.

RS: Delivering meals to disabled Vietnam vets.

DL: Who, you might like to know, didn’t see any problem with what I was doing.

RS: But why try to make napalm at school? Why not in the privacy of your own home? In the basement, or the garage?

DL: Look—you need to understand this. The world needs to. I’m a supervillain. A supervillain. Not a terrorist hunkered down in some cave or cellar. I’m nothing without the public eye on me. It's the theater, the spectacle—the danger of getting caught. Get it? And besides, if I’d done it at home my brother would have caught wind and taken the project away from me. We would have been frying squirrels in the back yard. I had my sights set . . . higher.

RS: On what?

DL: The high school gym. The physical fitness tests were coming up. And I wasn’t going to be humiliated at the pull-up bar one more time.

1.- Life on Mars? del albúm Hunky Dory

2.- Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing del albúm Diamond Dogs

3. The Bewlay Brothers del albúm Hunky Dory

4. Lady Grinning Soul del albúm Aladdin Sane

5. Win del album Young Americans

6. Some Are exclusiva de la compilación

7. Teenage Wildlife del album Scary Monsters

8. Repetition del album Lodger

9. Fantastic Voyage del album Lodger

10. Loving The Alien del album Tonight

11. Time Will Crawl (MM Remix) (nuevo remix de David Bowie)

12. Hang On To Yourself [en vivo] (del album Live Santa Monica ’72)

I ordered green contact lenses from my optometrist yesterday. I had an appointment for my yearly visual-field test and i asked about getting a sample of green ones for my costume. (Scarlett O'Hara has green eyes, they make a big deal about it in the book) So I asked on the off chance that they would give me a pair of samples Apparently, they only give you the one and that had DEMO printed on half of it. (It's not so noticable when you're wearing it, but there is this annoying blur just on the edge of your vision) I tried on two different ones. One was all green in this weird minty way that made my eye look all washed out (or maybe that's because I'm not used to having irises that aren't dark and think it makes me look like an alien... or David Bowie... same diff) and the other had some brown around the edges which resulted in.... no change at all.

(On a side note, I'm always forgetting that my eyes are not really brown. They used to be when I was a kid. As I got older, they changed and now they are a kind of dark amber. It's weird.)

Well, I can't go around with just one freaky green eye and one brown one (making me look more like David Bowie or an Alien) so I ordered the lenses. The freaky green ones. Of course.

I always thought color contact lenses were the peak of vanity and pretty ridiculous. Especially since the only people I ever say wearing them were Asian girls and Black ladies whose sapphire-blue eyes were patently fake. It never occured to me to want to change my eye color. Now, apparently I have the option to make them a scary minty green. Heh.

The question remains though, after all the lengths I've gone to for this costume (that I'm going to wear once) does buying color contact lenses seem more crazy? or just more of the same?

The Dubreq Stylophone is a miniature stylus operated synthesizer invented in 1967 by Brian Jarvis. It consists of a metal keyboard played by touching it with a stylus - each note being connected to a cheap voltage-controlled oscillator via a different-value resistor - thus closing a circuit. Some three million Stylophones were sold, mostly as children's toys. Rolf Harris appeared for several years as the Stylophone's advertising spokesman in the United Kingdom.

This past week when I happened across a couple of clips on Lou Reed (who has been in concert lately on the cirucit) I recalled an off-beat encounter many years ago in New York City

A friend of mine - Roberta - used to reside at Sutton Place with her husband (an ad agency man) back in the seventies - and was an acquaintance of Lou in some capacity.

If I recall correctly, Roberta and I met at Max's Kansas City, a hot little "in" spot in the Village where the celebrity clientele used to throw chick peas at each other.

I was on an apartment search, and the party girl of the hour, gracously invited me to stay with her family for a few days until I got situated.

Roberta was pretty and petite and a former model.

I think her hubbie was pleased that we became friends because he felt I was a good influence on her.

While he was busy at work hours on end, Roberta - social butterfly extraordaire - was out mixing and mingling with the trendy jet-set.

She loved to shop at Bloomies (Bloomingdales).

In fact, if I am not mistaken, Roberta was the one who first introduced me to the rarefied air of the prestigious department store all the rage in NYC.

Her eclectic circle of friends consisted of fashion models, musicians, and groupies.

One evening, we were all lolling around the spacious living-room chatting each other up, when Roberta announced that Lou Reed was stopping in to - as a friend in Canada would charmingly put it - say boo.

Being the star-struck kid that I was in those days, my jaw dropped!

If you lived in the "Big Apple", chances are you caught a glimpse of wild man Reed, dashing about the dynamic city core.

But now, he was going to be a party guest in the same tony enclave as me!

After what seemed to be an agonizing wait, the buzzer rang at the door.

When Roberta strolled over to answer, the well-heeled doorman below simply uttered up two words.

"It's him."

In a few tantalizing moments, Lou Reed was striding through the beautifully-crafted door - with guitar in hand - dressed head-to-toe in an eye-popping orange leather outfit.

It was a startling knock-out image to drink in - especially when you consider that in the dead of winter without a month or two of sun - Lou's face was pale with a slight green tinge to it.

Just like the rest of us, uh huh.

Surprisingly, he was quite the down-to-earth dude!

At one point in the conversation, he whipped out his guitar and strummed it a bit.

When I noted I was pursuing a singing career - within minutes - Lou dragged me into a rock n' roll version of "Some Where Over the Rainbow".

Shortly after, he departed to meet a couple of social obligations 'round town.

Sadly, that was the last I saw of him.

"Walk on the Wild Side" (penned a short while later) included a lyric about a friend of mine - Andy Warhol star - Jackie Curtis.

In that tune, if you recall, Lou sang:

"Jackie was just speeding away."

Yes, Jackie thought she was James Dean for a day.

And, Little Joe?

Nope. Never once gave it away.

I wondered if our little encounter ever inspired him to write a line or two about me?

Naw!

Favorite Lou Reed tune?

Satellite of Love!

Perfect Day (which I hope to record one day) is a close second!

Lou, if you catch this little tribute, howdy!

Welcome to a special, epic two-part magnum opus where we look at the bookended films that encapsulated the 'Twin Peaks' phenomenon of the early 1990s, beginning with the two-hour pilot episode and concluding with the oft-maligned theaterical release 'Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me.'

Film: Twin Peaks (Pilot) (1990) and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (1992)
Rated: (Fire Walk with Me) R
Directed by: David Lynch
Written by: David Lynch and Mark Frost

Starring: Kyle MacLachlin as Special Agent Dale Cooper
Michael Ontkean as Sheriff Harry S. Truman
Dana Ashbrook as Bobby Briggs
Lara Flynn Boyle as Donna Hayward (played by Moira Kelly in FWWM)
Madchen Amick as Shelly Johnson
Sheryl Lee as Laura Palmer/Madeline Ferguson
Ray Wise as LeLand Palmer

By Joe Campanella of Cinema-Fist

Pre-screeening memories: Growing up I was exposed to many different kinds of films. You see, I had a brother who was 14 years older than me, so naturally I'd pick up on a few things most 10-year-olds didn't.

While the kids at school were telling me how great Home Alone was, I was raving about Barton Fink. My God, I was pretentious even back then?

As a kid I remember my brother being obsessed with this show because someone named David Lynch was at the helm. (Having grown up and seen most of Lynch's work I now know why.) Every week, my brother would put on the TV and watch another episode of this odd show about the murder of someone named Laura Palmer.

To be honest, I really didn't remember much from this show, other than this...

...which made me, at the time, very scared of couches (my brother would often recreate this scene in our living room, throughly freaking me out).

The other thing I remembered quite vividly was Cooper's dream...

...which also frightened me immensely.

Was Joe still having horrific nighmares of The Log Lady, Bob, Laura Palmer, dopplegangers and the Little Person who was actually a disembodied left arm (yes, it's all as strange as it sounds) ? You can find out about he pilot episode of Twin Peaks here (or listen below),

[audio http://www.archive.org/download/NatsukashiEpisodeXxvTwinPeaks/TwinPeaksfinal.mp3]

as Joe and Rob talk about the pilot and the subsequent mania that was Twin Peaks. Then head over to:

Part II: Where Joe and Rob conclude their visit to Twin Peaks with a look back to Fire Walk with Me.
