Ok so the title of the post is a bit misleading, since not all these anime were released in '08. I've been following two series this year, Code Geass and Gurren Lagann, and there's no doubt that they're the best series I've seen in a long time (since Vision of Escaflowne in fact). Also did a marathon on another anime series called Akagi, purely in an effort to help with my detailed study. More below.

1. Code Geass:

The main character is bestowed with a power ("Geass") which gives him the ability to control the actions of anyone he commands with the power. He uses this power to try and liberate Japan of 'Brittania", a large nation which has taken over the majority of the world.

If you like the 'highly intellectual teenager trying to dominate the world' type anime (Death Note), then look no further. It's also got mechs called "Knigtmares", MECHS! It's gotta be awesome!

Plenty of twists and turns for those who love to watch anime which makes them think.

2. Gurren Lagann:

A GAINAX (Neon Genesis: Evangelion, FLCL...) production featuring bad ass mechs and even more bad ass characters. In the future, the surface of Earth is obliterated and humans are forced to a mysterious existance under the Earth's surface. The story is based around two characters, Simon and Kamina, and their aspirations to get to the surface and "pierce the heavens".

A motivating and uplifting anime to get you going for the end of year exams.

3. Akagi:

It's hard to fit 'action packed', 'thriller' and 'Mahjong' into one sentence, but this anime does just that. It's a  dark and atmospheric anime about the world of Mahjong gambling in Japan.

For those who know how to play Mahjong, you'll love this. For those who have never heard of Mahjong, give this a shot anyway.

So if you're new to anime, these are a great to get you started on the road to Otaku'ness. Others I'd recommend:

I finished watching Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 yesterday, after three sessions of four episodes sometime last week, the subsequent fifteen on Wednesday, and the final five yesterday (Here's a summary of the finale). It's been great, really, notwithstanding the news that director Taniguchi Goro came out saying that he couldn't finish the show the way he wanted to due to 'scheduling difficulties' *cough*, and a, to some extent, expected ending reminiscent of Death Note's.

So what do we have here? Nothing, I think. I am left in a temporary void. I've been waiting for the second season for ages, and it's gone almost as soon as it fell into my hands. Have to blame my own insatiable greed for that, I guess. What other show do I await now? Nothing. I have two Code Geass games in storage, but now that the second season is over, I really don't feel like playing them anymore. Emperor Lelouch vi Brittania is dead. So is anything related to Code Geass, at least for me.

It's odd... in the beginning, I didn't like R2. I think I can blame the character of Rolo for that. He was a put-off, for some reason. No matter. It just got better and better, although I couldn't help but notice how rushed everything was. Quite surprisingly, the one character I never thought I'd come to dislike was Nunnally (Come to think of it, I've never cared much for her), especially since she was so easily duped by Schneizel. Suzaku, that idealistic death-seeking tairyoku-baka was someone I could never stand, what with that irritating mouth of his constantly spouting crap like "I'll change Brittania from the inside", but he eventually earned my forgiveness with his participation in Lelouch's Zero Requiem plan.

Speaking of which, damn that plan. Why why why?!! I suppose it had to happen- it was after all, probably the one way almost everyone could be made happy, with the exception of Lelouch's sister Nunnally, and Suzaku, who got his just rewards by having to live out the rest of his life as Zero. These kind of endings just come to you, I guess. It's like Death Note, where a world with Light as supreme ruler, although appealing to the Light fanbase, just isn't a shocking/entertaining enough conclusion to a superb series.

The ending does remind me somewhat of God Emperor of Dune, where Leto Atreides II turned himself into a living god and purposely directed the hatred of the universe towards himself for humankind's own good. I can't help but wonder if Taniguchi was influenced be G.E.D during production of the show. Back to the point (Was there really one, for that matter?)...

I wish. Yes, I suppose that's the reason I'm really writing this post. I wish that Lelouch had somehow gotten the code for immortality, and will spend the rest of his neverending life with C.C. I wish that he could have remained Emperor. I wish that he is not a mere voice in C.C's consciousness. I wish that the world wouldn't hate Lelouch. I wish that... Sunrise will never, ever make a sequel to R2, despite everything I've just said, no matter how odd that sounds.

The title of this post is Requiem for an Emperor, and so it shall be. What better than the second season's second ending theme, わが臈たし悪の華, (Waga Routashi Aku no Hana, full lyrics here) by Ali Project?

Death Note se trata de un libro en el que si escribes un nombre puedes provocar que esa persona muera... ¿Peligroso cierto?, lo interesante es como se va desarrollando este planteamiento inicial, complicándose, llenándose de enredos y sorpresas (no te esperas el final). Es, en términos generales, un must have para cualquier otaku que se precie de serlo.

Y el manga es mas o menos igual, de hecho el anime es bastante fiel a esta historia original. El tomo 13 es difícil de conseguir, aunque tengo entendido que es más un manual que una continuación en la historia. Como sea, una lectura altamente recomendable.

Hace un tiempo ya que me vi la serie anime 'Death Note' y me encantó.

La serie se centra en Light Yagami, un estudiante japonés de sacar todo sobresaliente que encuentra un cuaderno sobrenatural llamado Death Note, el cual es capaz de matar personas con sólo escribir sus nombres en él y conocer su cara.

Al principio Light es reticente a creer en los poderes del cuaderno, pero cuando ve con sus propios ojos al shinigami (dios de la muerte en la mitología japonesa, personificación de la muerte) que la perdió y comprueba que sus poderes son reales, la cosa se le va de las manos. Toma la identidad de Kira, un justiciero que va matando a todos los delincuentes y presidiarios que salen por la tele, con el afán de limpiar el mundo de gente así.

Evidentemente, esto no pasa inadvertido para la policía, que crea un grupo especial de investigación para dar caza a Kira. Dicho grupo lo lidera L, un extraño personaje que se caracteriza por su inteligencia y capacidad de deducción lógica. Kira y L se enfrentan en un combate de inteligencias y estrategias que hacen que la serie se convierta en una de las mayores genialidades que he visto últimamente.

Me vi la serie en japonés subtitulado al español y lo cierto es que disfruté como un enano. La intensidad de algunos capítulos y la adicción que provoca es abosultamente maravillosa.

La recomiendo a todos aquellos que no la hayan visto, les guste el anime o no, porque es una serie muy madura, seria y con un guión acojonante.

Qué menos que comenzar este repaso por el que lanzó el género a la fama: LUPIN III. Su protagonista homónimo era ni más ni menos que el nieto de Arsène Lupin, ladrón de guante blanco creado por el novelista francés Maurice Leblanc, que vendría a ser una versión antagónica y equivalente de Sherlock Holmes para la literatura francesa (Arthur Conan Doyle desarrolló el personaje en la misma época). Como no, en el manga veíamos como Lupin III viajaba por el mundo robando todo lo que podía con su banda, compuesta por el pistolero Daisuke, el samurai Goemon (descendiente de Ishikawa Goemon, un Robin Hood japonés en su versión ninja) y la ladrona Fujiko.

La contrapartida la ponía el inspector Zenigata, cuya máxima aspiración era capturar a Lupin (o más bien perseguirlo, llegando a alegrarse de sus fugas porque significaban que su juego de gato y ratón podía continuar). Lo más destacado de la serie era su sentido del humor y su dibujo americanizado, que recordaba a los autores de novela negra de los USA.

En 1994 aparece Detective Conan, la historia del investigador de 17 años Shinichi Kudo que, debido a la ingestión de una extraña droga preparada para matarle, se convierte en un niño de 7 años con todas sus facultades mentales intactas. Tras este incidente y gracias a la ayuda del profesor Agasa (científico multiusos generador de patentes), crea un grupo de detectives bajo la identidad de Conan Edogawa junto a sus nuevos compañeros de clase Ayumi, Gente y Mitsuhiko con la esperanza de encontrar pistas que lo conduzcan a encontrar a una cura.

A partir de este planteamiento, asistimos a un desarrollo de capítulo-caso cerrado al más puro estilo de Sherlock Holmes en el que se irá acercando cada vez más a la misteriosa organización que está detrás de la fabricación de la droga.

Y por último, el más reciente: Death Note. Con un planteamiento más que original, nos cuenta la historia del Shinigami (dios japonés de la muerte) Ryuk y el humano Light Yagami.

Su relación comienza cuando Ryuk, aburrido del mundo de los Shinigami en el que vive, deja caer su Death Note (una libreta con el poder de matar a una persona con tan sólo escribir en ella su nombre e imaginar su rostro) en el mundo de los humanos. Light, uno de los mejores estudiantes de Japón, encuentra la Death Note y se marca el propósito de limpiar al mundo de criminales, aplicando un concepto de justicia absoluta en el que todo aquel que albergue maldad deberá morir y adoptando el sobrenombre de Kira para firmar sus asesinatos.

A su vez se nos presenta como contrapartida a L, el proclamado mejor detective del mundo, que colaborará desde el anonimato con la policía japonesa para atrapar a Kira y detener así el flujo incesante de muertos. El duelo entre ambos personajes es memorable, siendo imprescindible tener toda tu atención en cada viñeta para no perderte en los complicados juegos mentales de los dos protagonistas, que comenzarán una relación de admiración-odio que los llevará a protagonizar escenas e intrigas propias de la mejor novela de detectives.

La historia tiene su continuación en el mundo de los videojuegos, la novela y el cine, con dos adaptaciones hasta la fecha que cambian sustancialmente el desarrollo de la historia y el final de la misma, volcándose principalmente en el personaje de L.

PD: A pesar de tratarse de una entrada sobre manga, he preferido acompañar cada serie con un vídeo de su correspondiente adaptación al anime, para que aquellos que no las conozcan o nunca las hayan visto puedan hacerse una idea y animarse a leerlas.

Esa es la causa. Chávez, ese insigne frikizolano, tiene 2 cuadernos de la muerte.

Pero hay más. El presi desea llegar hasta el 2021, y quiere usar esos 2 "cuadernitos inocentes" de la forma más eficaz posible: con los ojos de shinigami, los cuales, permiten ver el nombre real de una persona.

El problema, es que hay que sacrificar la mitad del tiempo de vida, y a Micomandante no le conviene eso si pretende durar. Así que buscó a 2 tontos que hicieran el pacto de los ojos de shinigami.

El primero de ellos:

Este fue el primero y más famoso, sobre todo porque anuló el pacto y no siguió con la guachafita. Por eso, lo mandaron a freir espárragos.

Este es otro, que por cierto, como ya no tiene mucha esperanza de vida, hizo el pacto sin dudarlo un segundo:

Este provocó la desaparición de muchos candidatos oposicionistas, repartidos en ataques cardiacos, accidentes, y otras cosas más.

Vor nun gut eineinhalb Jahren gab mir ein Bekannter den Tipp eine mir bis Dato unbekannte Anime Serie namens Death Note anzusehen. Nach langen suchen fand ich sie endlich mit deutschen Untertitel, da sie zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch nicht den Weg außerhalb des Japanischen Raumes gefunden hatte und es deshalb erst die Japanische Synchronisation gab. Sofort nachdem ich mir die erste Folge angesehen hatte, wusste ich das Death Note eine meiner Lieblings Serien werden würde. Von Folge zu Folge wurde es spannender und ich konnte gar nicht mehr damit aufhören sie mir anzusehen. Die tollen Charaktere und die wende Punkte in der Story regen einfach zum weiter gucken von Death Note an. Nicht zu vergessen der geniale Soundtrack, jener der Serie den letzten Schliff verpasst. Gegen Ende verliert Death Note jedoch, wie ich finde, ein wenig seiner anfänglichen Klasse, dennoch ist sie immer noch spannend und sehenswert geblieben. Inzwischen besitze ich alle Manga von Death Note und die erste der nun auch in deutscher Synchronisation erhältlichen DVDs der Serie. Die deutsche Synchronisation ist zwar nicht so gut gelungen wie die Japanische dennoch dürfen sie in meiner Sammlung nicht fehlen und glücklicherweise ist die Japanische Synchronisation auch noch auf der DVD zu finden.

Noch kurz ein wenig mehr zur Handlung:

Eines Tages findet der Schüler Light Yagami ein schwarzes Notizbuch, Das Death Note , dass der Shinigami(Todesgott) Ryuk in der Menschen Welt fallen lies, da es ihm in der Welt der Shinigami zu langweilig wurde. Das Death Note enthält eine detaillierte, von Ryuk, verfasste Anleitung, in der alle Bedienungen stehen die nötig sind um mit dem Death Note einen Menschen zu töten. So heißt es dort, dass der Mensch, dessen Name in dieses Notizbuch geschrieben wird, während man sich dessen Gesicht vorstellt, innerhalb von 40 Sekunden an Herz versagen stirbt, wenn man die genaueren Umstände des Todes nicht definiert hat. Light fast den Entschluss das Death Note zu benutzen, um damit die Welt von allen Verbrechern zu "befreien" und damit eine neue "Perfekte Welt" nach seinen Maßstäben zu erschaffen. Sein stetiger Begleiter hierbei ist der Shinigami Ryuk, der nur von denen gesehen werden kann die das Death Note berührt haben.

Durch die sich häufenden Todesfälle von Gefangen kommt die Polizei, sowie der mysteriöse Meisterdetektiv L, schnell auf seine Spur. So beginnt ein Katz-und-Maus-Spiel zwischen Light, dem im Internet und den Medien der Spitzname Kira  in Anlehnung an das englische Wort "Killer" gegeben wurde, L sowie der japanischen und der internationalen Polizei. Während L versucht, die Identität und Tötungsmethode Kiras zu lüften, muss Light das Gesicht und den wahren Namen Ls herausfinden, um ihn in sein Death Note eintragen zu können.....

Zum Schluss kann ich nur noch sagen, dass Death Note ein muss für jeden Anime und Manga Fan ist.

Can't really believe that it's over. And I completed the whole series in the short span of a September! (Maybe a bit more to marathon the first season, though.)

It's been really entertaining, and I'm kinda sad that it's ended. What a dramatic ending, with that whole trail of blood down that slope. And I kind of like how he was, as one pixiv image states, The World's Kindest Liar.

I don't exactly hope Lulu will be some cart driver though, I don't see how you deduce that some random cart driver whom I didn't even consciously notice could be Lulu Resurrected ._.u Imagine that!

Hey, but maybe he could have had his soul transferred into Nunnally's crane and that coulda been what C.C. was praying for and hey, he would have lost his entire harem but he still has C.C. by his side faithfully and she talks to him just like she talked to was-she-dead-or-not Marianne.In short: SUNRISE PLEASE DON'T REVIVE LULU IF YOU DON'T HAVE A GOOD PREMISE which we 48591241562318578922564.34156 fans haven't figured out yet. What's that, you say? The classic Deux Ex Machina? Some of us are getting sick of that crap.

Oh, and if Gundam 00 (I wonder if I should even try and catch up to something that's part of the neverending Gundam franchise) is raking in enough from fujoshis and Gundam fanboys already, you don't have to repeat the plot in CG, if what I hear about the similarities in plot/ending are correct.

Speaking of Gundam... Let me blind you with something interesting.

Speaking of that KIRA! meme, why hasn't anyone done a crossover of Death Note and Macross?? (Or at least I haven't seen any around.) I'd totally want to see Raiko and Lko doing that weird shineyshineyshiney thing. Instead of a mic they could be holding a deadly pen and preparing to have a deathnotegasm.

Alright, I won't blind you anymore. I've been lurking pixiv and doing random stuff on lang-8 while neglecting my math. I've also been majorly mindscrewed by physics and I don't know what to do to prepare for CHINESEDOOM and ENGLISHAGHWHYCAN'TISCORE tomorrow. I swear, I should have been in the Chinese stream and not the Higher Chinese stream.

There's a hell lot more decent fanart on pixiv (heck, I'm starting to get the feeling they're all professionals but that can't be true dammit you Japanese) ..I don't mean the stuff I strike out, by the way.. and anyway I figured I should leave it to you guys to just go and find out for yourselves on pixiv :D Quite a lot are cute/ moe, quite a few pretty, a handful pretty hot, a few DANGITAMAZINGHOWDIDYOUDOTHAT and a lot of them really well-drawn. I have a fetish for samurai films and when I had the chance to get my own at a good price, I sealed the deal.

So I'm about a good 65% done with reorganizing this blog. The majority of the pages are done anyway like the Master Grade and GFF reviews are under the "Master Grade" and "Fix Figurations" page respectively. What pisses me off is that wordpress has such crappy themes to play around with; none of the themes really works for me at the moment. The images in my reviews get cut off and cramped left and right. It just doesn't work! Light's expression above describes me best. Too bad I don't have any CSS skills to do a thing about it. I'll try to find something that works when I wake up tomorrow...

-Finalmente concluye una de las series más controversiales de los últimos tiempos y de una manera que no puede resultar indiferente para nadie. Pero no es mi intención abordar en este articulo el hecho de si el final cumplió con las expectativas o no, si el excelente despliegue argumental fue capaz de opacar y a la vez justificar los reiterados declives que se le atribuyen (incongruencias, exceso de fanservice, que los personajes son técnicamente inmortales, etc.) o sobre las muchas (que en realidad no son tantas, pero bueno) interrogantes que sobresalen tras el final de la serie. Para esos y más tópicos similares existen innumerables temas con páginas y paginas que exclusivamente se refieren a aquello. Mi enfoque es relativamente más sencillo pero a la vez más profundo en pos de establecer instancias de reflexión mediática. Me referiré en medida de lo posible a las razones, motivos, ideologías y prejuicios que han sido la premisa constante de los últimos 10 episodios de Code Geass R2, capítulos estigmatizados por la controversia y los drásticos giros argumentales en los que los guionistas incurrían con alarmante frecuencia.

-¿Qué es lo que motiva a un hombre a quitarse la vida en pos de ver cumplidos sus objetivos? No existen respuestas ni breves ni simples para aquello. Una de las características mas interesantes de la serie corresponde a apreciar la evolución ideológica del protagonista, desde ser un personaje que únicamente promueve el deseo de venganza y el anhelo de poder a un idealista consumado, capaz de sacrificarlo todo con tal de purgar su alma de los pecados que ha cometido, martirizando su propia existencia.

Mientras que Lelouch voluntariamente se atribuye todos los males posibles de la sociedad se transforma en una representación simbólica del odio, con el doble fin en primera instancia de opacar el legado de la princesa genocida, seguida del establecimiento de un dictatorial régimen facto opresivo que esclareciera las vicitudes de un gobierno de esta índole en las psiquis de sus súbditos, para así promover a su contraparte política, la democracia, como salvaguardarte de la integridad humana y en permanente celo de los designios de la voluntad soberana.

Hasta este punto resulta muy sencillo apreciar los verdaderos motivos del protagonista, pero, ¿a que se debe este radical cambio en su forma de interpretar la realidad? Es aquí donde entramos en arenas movedizas.

Durante el transcurso de la historia, Lelouch, debido a sus experiencias, comienza a justificar sus crímenes en pos de una causa mayor. Acaba con la vida de innumerables personas, aprecia en carne propia los alcances de la consumación de su venganza y le resulta vacía. Saborea el poder pero no se corrompe con este como Light Yagami de Death Note.

Lelouch desmaterializa su existencia. Se convierte a si mismo en un instrumento de cambio social. La frase de Maquiavelo nunca fue tan vigente dentro de la animación contemporánea, “el fin justifica los medios” en su máximo esplendor.

Y al final, a modo de compensación suprema, acaba con su vida de manera magistral.

... That is 7 altogether! I was pretty disappointed with the Death Note DVDs. You see, I already own both of the DVDs. I already have both the Japanese and English versions of FFVII: Advent Children because it is the Collector's Edition!

I have decided to make an Anime Movies! page for the site. All movies I put up will be there. This includes the Bleach movies since I'm not even half way through the dubbed version of Bleach. The Naruto movies have been moved there as well.

Uma recente pesquisa da Oricon, entrevistou 300 jovens (de 14 à 19 anos) para falarem quais são as séries de mangá que eles já leram. O mangá "One Piece" ficou em primeiro, seguido do clássico mangá de basquete "Slam Dunk".

"Dragon Ball" e "Death Note" empataram em terceiro, enquando a séries de comédia "Gintama" ficou em quinto, segudio de "Lovely Complex" dividindo sua colocação com "Nodame Cantabile" em sexto.

Em oitavo ficou "Detective Conan", e "Fullmetal Alchemist" empatou com "Hana Yori Dango" em novo lugar.
