Shown yesterday for the first time at a packed theatre as part of the annual 'Toronto International Film Festival' (where directors and producers parade their films as an attempt to gain recognition and word of mouth, not to mention money), 'Burn After Reading' is the next creation by Joel and Ethan Coen, winners of last year's "Best Direction of a Motion Picture" Academy Award for their outstanding work on 'No Country For Old Men' (which I still haven't seen...yet).

In their new thriller, a disk containing the memoirs of a "retiring" CIA agent ends up in the wrong hands: the ones of two shady gym employees, who then attempt to sell it by fucking that same CIA agent's life in the process. Heh, sounds crazy as hell...just as 'Fargo' was. Oh, and that's a great thing, in case you were wondering. : )

[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="Gotta' love that duo: Pitt and McDormand as the "unscrupulous" gym employees in 'Burn After Reading'."][/caption]

The Coens make great films...some of the best we've had in the last decade, in fact ('The Big Lebowski', 'O Brother, Where Art Thou?), so I don't find crazy at all to think that this one is going to be another runaway success for them. And with a terrific cast like the one they've got for this piece (Brad Pitt, George Clooney, John Malkovich & Frances McDormand, to name a few), it's retardedly easy to be excited. It's also been getting some great reviews, already.

Watch the trailer below, and don't forget to leave me your thoughts on it. Thanks for reading. : )

This latest offering from the Coen brothers [No Country For Old Men, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou...] looks like a riot. I can't wait to see it. The tag says it all: "Intelligence Is Relative." Burn After Reading is a dark spy-comedy about a couple of gym workers who come across a disk containing the memoirs of a CIA agent, and their attempts to sell it. With a great cast featuring George Clooney, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich, Brad Pitt and Tilda Swinton & more, this movie should be a pretty quirky-fun time. Brad Pitt plays a great idiot, that's for sure. lol

Add'l Info: Release Date: Sep 12, 2008 • Runtime: TBD • Rated R for pervasive language, some sexual content and violence • Photo Credit: © Focus Features via allmoviephoto.com

The Venice Film Festival has opened with the premiere of the Coen brothers' dark comedy Burn After Reading.

The film, starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt, is showing out of the competition at the annual event.

Before the screening, the stars posed good-naturedly for pictures and signed autograph books for fans lining up along the red carpet.

There are 21 movies competing for the coveted Golden Lion this year, with entries from Ethiopia and Turkey.

The festival continues with a fly-on -the-wall film about fashion designer Valentino Garavani - billed as a glimpse into a world of bygone glamor.

The movie was directed and produced by special correspondent for Vanity Fair magazine, Matt Tyrnauer.

Conspiracy

Pitt and Clooney are joined by British actress Tilda Swinton in Ethan and Joel Coen's latest offering.

Clooney plays a paranoid federal marshal who gets mixed up in a conspiracy involving a former CIA analyst's missing memoirs.

Also involved are the analyst's adulterous wife, played by Swinton, and a couple of gormless gym instructors played by Pitt and Frances McDormand.

Before the premiere, Pitt picked up an award that he won in Venice last year - the best actor's prize for The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.

"You can run but you can't hide," Pitt joked as he accepted the award.

"It was an honor to receive this last year and it remains an honour to accept this this year."

Among the favorites for the Golden Lion are Japanese directors Takeshi Kitano, with Achilles and the Tortoise, and Hayao Miyasaki, for the animated feature Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea.

The prize will be awarded on 6 September.

Other strong contenders include US director Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler, starring Mickey Rourke, and French film-maker Barbet Schroeder's thriller L'Inju: la Bete dans l'Ombre, or The Beast in the Shadows.

I'm normally a fairly cheerful soul - everything is fine (until it isn't!) but I had started to feel that things most definitely were not fine any more - hence my visit to Mallorca.

I've not really had chance to catch up since I got back so I apologise if I have missed anything vital! I think I may have missed a few tags - if I have - sorry, I'll try and get to them when I can. I must confess that part of the problem has been my obsession with the Olympics - I have been glued to the TV watching all sorts of weird and wonderful sports and rooting for any one who took my fancy if there were no Team GB athletes involved. I am quite bereft now it is all over. It was a wonderful Games, the spectacular facilities, a wonderful backdrop to some truly stunning sporting performances. Now it's up to London to produce a good Games in 2012. Fingers crossed.

This weekend, the weather has brightened up back home as well and I am feeling much better. Luckily, I am also off to sunny Los Angeles for two weeks on Friday so another blast of hot sunshine should complete the recovery. I will be taking my laptop with me this time so I hope to send you regular bulletins from California. In preparation, I have been indulging in a little retail therapy which has probably contributed to my improved state of mind...

Clothes shopping makes me happy so to continue this cheery vibe, watch this video it combines two of my favourite things - paper and babies!

PS My garden table is due to arrive today...it is almost 2pm, I am not holding my breath...

PPS - Just found out about this film, 'Burn after Reading'. I HAVE to see this, it is the new Coen brothers film (love the Coen brothers' films) and it stars George Clooney (and you all know how I feel about HIM), Brad Pitt (take him or leave him - am I the only person who thinks he is the WORST comedy actor? Think of his guest appearance in 'Friends' - useless) and John Malkovich (weirdly gorgeous) and two great female leads, Frances McDormand and Tilda Swinton. Here is a trailer. Maybe it will be on in Los Angeles....

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="240" caption="Frances McDormand starred in the movie version of "Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day""][/caption]

Lately I've realized that I'm the literary equivalent of a survivalist who has a cellar full of tinned Vienna sausages and sauerkraut just in case there's an enemy attack. I'm dog-sitting for a week for a couple whose house resembles a Barnes and Noble annex: She's led several book clubs and he’s a reporter covering the Democratic National Convention.

Still, I must be prepared. What if none of my friends’ books is exactly what I need to survive the week? So before leaving home I spent days thinking about which books to pack until a dozen or so went into my suitcase, including these five:

The Portable Dorothy Parker: Revised and Enlarged Edition (Viking, 1973), by Dorothy Parker with an introduction by Brendan Gill. I try always to take a good book of literary criticism on vacation, and this one has some of Parker’s best Constant Reader columns for The New Yorker plus a selection of her poems, articles and short stories. A favorite line: Parker writes in a review of a book by the wife of a British prime minister: “The affair between Margot Asquith and Margot Asquith will live as one of the prettiest in all of literature." dorothyparker.com

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (Dial, 2008), by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. Based on the reviews and word-of-mouth, I just sent this epistolary novel as an 85th birthday present to an aunt in Peoria (along with a cherry-red tin of thistle-shaped Walker's shortbread as a substitute for potato peel pie). Need to read the book to find out if Aunt Lois is still speaking to me. www.guernseyliterary.com

The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher A Shocking Murder and the Undoing of a Great Victorian Detective (Walker, 2008) by Kate Summerscale. An easy call. This is one of year’s most highly praised books of historical true crime. I read a few chapters earlier this month and had to force myself to stop and save the book for this week. I also have a soft spot for books in which the body turns up in an outhouse for reasons perhaps best saved for another post. www.katesummerscale.com and www.walkerbooks.com

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (Persephone Classics, 2008), by Winifred Watson with an introduction by Henrietta Twycross-Martin. English journalists have called the London–based Persephone Books is “the new Virago,” a defunct imprint that specialized in neglected minor classics by women, so I’ve been looking forward to getting to know its list. The dust jacket says of this book says, “Miss Pettigrew is a down-on-her-luck, middle-aged governess sent by her employment agency to work for a nightclub singer rather than a household of unruly children. Over a period of 24 hours her life is changed – forever.” And a Guardian reviewer wrote: “Why has it taken more than half a century for this wonderful flight of humor to be rediscovered? Pure Cinderella fantasy farce with beaus, bounders, negligees and nightclubs – Miss Pettigrews’s blossoming is a delight to observe." Frances McDormand starred in a 2008 movie version movies.yahoo.com/movie/1809874771/video of the novel www.persephonebooks.co.uk.

Sports Stories (Kingfisher, 2000, ages 9 and up), chosen by Alan Durant and illustrated by David Kearney. For a long time I’ve been looking for a good book of short stories about sports for middle-school and older students. This one caught my eye at the library because it includes new and classic writing on a variety of girls’ or boys sports, including soccer, tennis, baseball, basketball, hockey, swimming and running. The quality of writing in anthologies tends to be uneven, and I’m hoping to find out this week if Sports Stories achieves enough consistency to recommend it. www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/d/alan-durant/sports-stories.htm

Even though there might be a few random chuckles to be had in No Country for Old Men, no one would go so far as to call it a comedy. But, for the most part, that's what the Coen brothers are known for: dark, quirky laugh-out-loud funny movies. Putting aside a few forays into the world of mostly serious, nostalgic crime thrillers (Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink, The Man Who Wasn't There) and a couple of forgettable missteps (The Ladykillers, Intolerable Cruelty), the Coen brothers have made a name for themselves with a string of unusual and beloved films that get their laughs more from situations and characters than from point blank jokes (Raising Arizona, Fargo, The Big Lebowski, O Brother, Where Art Thou?).

Hoping to add to that list, the Coen brothers have written and directed Burn After Reading. The story revolves around a CD containing John Malkovich's CIA memoirs. After Brad Pitt finds the disc in a locker room, he and fellow gym employee Frances McDormand set out to use their newfound leverage to lighten Malkovich's wallet. The trailer begins with Pitt explaining what he's found to a few skeptical coworkers. He then sets up a meeting with Malkovich over the phone, and it's obvious that in the early going both Pitt and McDormand are treating their caper more like a game than an actual crime. When Pitt finally comes face-to-face with Malkovich, he gets a dose of reality and realizes that his plan might not go as smoothly as he once thought. From then on, it's an all-out battle between the bitter, condescending Malkovich and the flighty, misguided Pitt. Also, somewhere along the way, McDormand gets romantically involved with George Clooney. While it's not abundantly clear from the trailer what part he plays in the story, apparently Clooney is also sleeping with Tilda Swinton, Malkovich's ex-wife.

My favorite part of the trailer comes when Pitt meets with Malkovich for the first time. Sitting in Malkovich's car, Pitt tries to explain that he is merely a "good Samaritan." But, Malkovich instantly sees through his load of crap and punches Pitt square in the nose to make it perfectly clear that the gym rat is messing with the wrong dude. Burn After Reading opens September 12, 2008. Check out the trailer at Zuguide.com.

IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0970468/

This review may contain minor spoilers

It's hard to say what made me decide to watch this movie. I'll have to go with a combination of lead actress Amy Adams, and a recommendation from my sister as deciding factors. Now I don't know if it was a good thing or not, since I can't really decide if the movie was worth watching. I really enjoyed the second half, and the cast was very good, but I always absolutely hated the first half. They sort of balanced each other out, but since it was the latter half that I really enjoyed, it definetly left me with a more positive impression on the film. I don't see this movie being widely loved, but I also don't see it being widely hated - it's somewhat of an oddity in the film industry.

What kept my interest in this film - and the main reason the second half was so good - was threefold; Amy Adams, Lee Pace, and Shirley Henderson. I know that I just named half of the cast (almost) and it may have been easier to just say "I loved the cast" but that would not have been true. I didn't really hate any of the other actors, but those three were a level beyond. Shirley Henderson was great just because I loved her voice - which many appearantly find annoying, but it's distinctive and interesting and perfect for this role.

Amy Adams has always been a great actress, and this time was no exception. While this was in no way her best performance, she really brought the character out and was great to watch. Lee Pace looks and sounds like a cross between Clive Owen and Matthew Macfadyen - much more Owen in the mix though. It may be for that fact alone that I liked him, but he is also an awesome actor, and well cast.

The writing was at times witty, but mostly not very good at all. Considering one of the writers was the guy that wrote The Full Monty, it's somewhat surprising that it wasn't very good. It's mostly the fault of drab source material - in the form of a book - which they tried hard to build upon, but there is only so much you can do. The direction needed work, which is not hard to understand since the director has mostly only done tv up until now - he has two features prior to this but both are horrible.

The movie has it's moments, and I went out of it with a good impression so I would recommend it to those people whom think a watered down period comedy with awkward scenes sounds like a good idea. I would say to watch the trailer and go from there, since I'm sure many people will love it, just as I'm sure many won't.

“Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day” is the kind of movie my mother would like. In a word, it is sweet. It’s frothy and frivolous, as well as a rather unsuccessful attempt at farce. It kind of wants to be a screwball comedy, a Woody Allen frenzied flick or a throwback to the days of Frank Capra, but never really finds the tricky rhythm a film like that requires. But just when you think it might be fizzy enough to give you a tummy ache, it pulls up and shows you some heft, a little gravity, a certain bittersweet aftertaste. And suddenly you’re glad it didn’t succeed on all those other notes, because this one is so much more satisfying.
Set in Mahvelous England between the Wars, Frances McDormand plays the Pettigrew of the title, and yes indeed, the events take place over the course of 24 hours, however unlikely that may seem. A nanny who can’t seem to hang on to a job, she is faced with the dual prospects of homelessness and hunger when she steals a namecard from her employment agency and shows up at the door of Amy Adams, pretending to be a social secretary. Adams is a flibbertigibbet, entertaining one man in another man’s flat on the day yet a third man plans to propose to her. Clearly, she needs help from the kind of level-headed, down to earth, practical sort of woman who…can’t keep a job looking after children. Well, anyway.
Frances McDormand and Amy Adams are entertaining as opposites, for a few minutes. It’s hard to imagine more contrasting actresses, but easy to imagine others in these roles; I kept thinking about Emma Thompson as I watched McDormand, and Adams made me think of Nicole Kidman. Their characters are one dimensional, and quickly grow tiresome. Happily, “Miss Pettigrew”’ introduces, right at this point of weariness, a whole rainbow of colorful, supporting characters, perhaps every one of them better cast than our leads. We meet Lee Pace, Adams’ One True Love, who looks and acts like a young Clive Owen, but with a soul. Then there’s Ciaran Hinds and Shirley Henderson, a quarrelling couple of polar opposites about to get married – or not. Henderson squeaks instead of speaks, and moves with a certain effortless, arrogant confidence. Her nose is always in the air, in the most attractive, disgusting way. Hinds is a big man, smooth and handsome, with an eye for the finer things in life – like the lingerie he designs. It’s clear from his first moment onscreen that he’s of a different sort than these, and satisfying when that intuition is later proven right.

And the movie proceeds as one would expect it to, Adams using her body to get into trouble (as well as expensive clothes, flats, and exclusive parties) and McDormand using her mind – and manners – to get Adams out of trouble. But then – wait for it --“Miss Pettigrew” peels back a layer, and shows its surprising heart.

All of a sudden, a few of the characters have dimensions, and the movie has a bittersweet undertone. The characters have a past, and a future. Now all the foolishness and fancy swirling around Miss Pettigrew feels terribly fragile, and we understand frivolity is something to be protected and prolonged, however doomed (and idiotic) it may be, because it can only happen in times of peace. And now we see the connection between McDormand and Hinds, and can guess the rest of the movie. I wish director Bharat Nalluri had seen fit to leave the subtext simply stated in that one scene, but the points gets belaboured a bit. Hiding under a table during an air raid drill, Amy Adams says “We’re going to war, aren’t we?” and McDormand simply must launch into a speech that begins, “Yes, we are. And that’s why you must not waste one second of this precious life.” We could’ve done without this speech; everything within it had already been suggested in much simpler, more graceful ways. And yet it doesn’t take away the bittersweet taste of that first moment, the golden touch of McDormand and Hinds together, remembering. That scene is what I will take away from this movie, and the feeling of that scene the feeling I will associate with “Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day.” For all the scenes, moods, and moments it gets just slightly wrong, it gets that one exactly right. That’s something.

Recommended

My movie picks are not based on reviews. They’re simply movies that I would like to see. I’m not even giving them ratings. I’m just saying they look interesting to me. In the event I do see said movies, I’ll let you know what I thought. The following is a list of movies coming out in September that I would like to see:

Blindness (rated R): an outbreak of blindness ravages a city leaving all of its residents blind with the exception of one woman, the wife of a doctor. Blindness has lured me in with its mysteriously vague trailer. Again no Official Site was available so I linked to a trailer on YouTube. The movie appears to revolve around the scenario of "what do you do with a whole city of suddenly stricken blind citizens?" and it would appear the answer is isolation and abandonment, or is it??? The hook is set deep in my lip, dragging me along. I just gotta know. Starring Mark Ruffalo, Julianne Moore, Gael Garcia Bernal, Danny Glover and Alice Braga.

Miracle At St. Anna (rated R) is a Spike Lee Joint on a whole new level. On December 19th, 1983 a man walks into a post office and requests a 30 cent stamp "please". Hector Negron looks up at the man making the request. Negron then pulls a gun from under the counter and kills the man while a five million dollar Italian artifact sits in his New York home. Flashback 39 years to World War II, behind enemy lines to unravel this mystery. Starring Derek Luke, Michael Ealy, Laz Alonso, Omar Benson Miller, Matteo Sciabordi, Valentina Cervi, Pierfrancesco Favino, John Leguizamo and Joseph Gordon Levitt.

Setting just the right tone with a period movie can be tricky; underplay your hand too much and the piece seems muted and slightly lifeless; overplay anything by even the slimmest of margins and it comes over as am-dram and false. Unfortunately, this is exactly what happens here with a film that would like to be the next Mrs Henderson Presents, but is more like provincial theatre.

This book adaptation follows the fortunes of spinster nanny Miss Guinevere Pettigrew (Frances McDormand), who in 1939 finds herself without a position and penniless. But Miss P is nothing if not resourceful and she manages to blag her way into becoming the personal secretary for up-and-coming stage starlet Delysia Lafosse (Amy Adams). Having dealt with plenty of spoilt brats in her time, dealing with glamourpuss Delysia should be a doddle for Miss P, but even she baulks at her new mistress's complicated lovelife including no less than three suitors (a nightclub owner, an actor, and a piano player). Then there’s the whirlwind of social events she simply must attend and suddenly, after twenty years in the nursery, Miss Pettigrew finds herself really living life to the full. But will her new existence allow her to have a love interest of her own, in the shape of fashion designer Joe (Ciaran Hinds) who just happens to be engaged to harpy socialite Edythe (Shirley Henderson)?

This overly frothy film fizzes all over the place and ends up being febrile flim-flam. It’s all cocktails and gossip, swanky dos and cigarette holders with an intrusively perky soundtrack that leaves you in doubt that you’re meant to find everything highly entertaining. Although there are a few moments of nice acting absolutely nothing is convincing. The humour is not so coarse as to make it 'nudge nudge, wink wink' but the implied sexual innuendos of the opening scenes strike a really false note and the film simply cannot recover from then on. Dee Pilgrim

Well, it’s been a good year at the movies so far. There are only a few films that I’m in

Well, it's been a good year at the movies so far. There are only a few films that I'm interested in seeing this Summer (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Pineapple Express, and Tropic Thunder)

My Top 5 for 2008 So Far:

1. The Dark Knight
2. Wall-E
3. American Teen
4. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
5. Iron Man

That said, I'm really looking forward to Oscar season this year. I have a feeling that the Academy Awards are going to be insane with competition. Last year was good, but this will probably be better. This afternoon I hunted down the upcoming films for the rest of the year.

My Top 11 Must-Sees:

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Directed By: David Fincher
Starring: Brad Pitt / Cate Blanchett / Tilda Swinton

Zodiac was royally shafted at the Academy Awards this year. I thought it should have been nominated for picture, adapted screenplay, supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr) and visual effects. It probably wouldn't have won any, but it should have had some recognition.

That said, I think Benjamin Button is going to get Fincher back in the game.

(Apple Trailers)

Burn After Reading
Directed By: Ethan Coen / Joel Coen
Starring: Brad Pitt / George Clooney / John Malkovich / Tilda Swinton / Frances McDormand

After the amazing No Country for Old Men last year, it looks like the Coens are back in action with a dark screwball comedy (their forte) with a great ensemble cast. It will be nice to see Frances McDormand in a Coen film again.

(Apple Trailers)

Revolutionary Road
Directed By: Sam Mendes
Starring: Leondardo DiCaprio / Kate Winslet / Kathy Bates

Looks like a Titanic cast reunion. Add in the director of American Beauty and Road to Perdition and you have an awesome combination.

The Soloist
Directed By: Joe Wright
Starring: Robert Downey Jr. / Jamie Foxx / Catharine Keener

Robert Downey Jr. has been in an insane number of films the last few years. That's all.

Australia
Directed By: Baz Luhrmann
Starring: Hugh Jackman / Nicole Kidman / David Wenham

Quite simply, this looks epic, and I do not want to miss seeing it on the silver screen. It may end up being the next Lawrence of Arabia for all we know. And you can't go wrong with Hugh Jacman.

As long as it's better than Hidalgo. Solid cast, and the amazing Ed Harris.

What can I say? The preview sold me. This looks to be quite the tense film.

Body of Lies
Directed By: Ridley Scott
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio / Russell Crowe

Since 2002, DiCaprio hasn't disappionted me once as an actor. He just keeps plugging away. With 8 films in the next two years, he's going to be a busy man. And to top it off, the preview reminded me a little bit of Michael Mann's Heat, which is never a bad thing.

I've heard really good things about the Shanley's play, which this is based on. And what a great cast.
