Solo bastó con que un aprendiz holandés, erróneamente interpusiera dos lentes pulidos ante sus ojos para darse cuenta de que el campanario de la iglesia se veía más cerca…en ese momento nació el instrumento que hoy nos permite revelar los secretos más celosamente guardados por el Universo, en ese momento nació el telescopio.

Luego de algunos meses de modificación para uso militar y posteriormente comercial, el telescopio ya se vendía en las principales calles de París y otras ciudades europeas como un objeto simplemente curioso. Aquel extraño aparato cilíndrico y tosco, llegó a manos de un profesor de matemáticas que vivía en Padua, a unos kilómetros de Venecia, su nombre: Galileo Galilei…

Fue en una noche del año 1609, en la que este italiano tomó aquel invento modificado por su mano y apuntó al firmamento; la curiosidad esta vez no mató al gato, creo que más bien, “le dio vida”, pues durante siglos habíamos vivido sumergidos en la ignorancia por creer en verdades absolutas, en pocas palabras, vivíamos como muertos al desconocer la realidad de nuestro mundo, y más aún, de aquellos otros mundos que aprendimos a conocer desde aquellas noches que se convirtieron en sitas de amor, amor por el Cosmos, que luego de muchas observaciones “mostró sus anillos de boda”…La noche en que Saturno sin pudor, mostro la belleza de sus anillos a la Humanidad.

Fueron pasando los años, y a la vez que veíamos que el universo era más grande de lo que imaginábamos, también nos percatábamos mirada tras mirada por el telescopio, que nuestro mundo era cada vez más pequeño; que incluso nuestro astro rey el Sol, era uno más entre miles de millones en una vasta ciudadela de estrellas llamada Vía Láctea, la cual se derrama a unos 100.000 años luz en todo su tamaño, dejando nuestro pequeño “oasis de vida”-la Tierra- a unos 20.000 años luz del extremo y a unos 30.000 de su violento y misterioso centro.

1609-2009. Sumados estos años el resultado es igual a 400. Cuatrocientos años desde que por primera vez el padre de la ciencia moderna Galileo Galilei, apuntó su telescopio hacia el espacio, revelando aquel manto celeste que por milenios nuestros antepasados habían observado a simple vista. Una nueva era de la Civilización Humana y la forma en la que estudiábamos el universo, cambió aquella noche de 1609 en la que Galileo desnudo el cosmos con su mirada.

Hablando de los múltiples descubrimientos y avances tecnológicos y científicos de la época, tardaríamos las suficientes páginas como para escribir un libro; pues definitivamente hablar del universo y de lo que significa su existencia en la más mínima expresión de vida en su expansión, no se puede hacer, si no de forma poética y romántica.

El año 2009 ha sido denominado por la UNESCO y la Unidad Astronómica Internacional (UAI por sus siglas en ingles). Como el Año Internacional de la Astronomía, cumpliéndose 400 años desde que el matemático y físico italiano Galileo Galilei, apuntó por primera vez un telescopio al firmamento. La celebración a la que se sumarán más de 140 países, contará con un sin número de actividades que buscan un solo objetivo: Enamorar a las naciones en vías de desarrollo de la Astronomía y sus ciencias afines, incentivándolas así, a dar un pequeño paso hacia el progreso científico, pero un gran sato hacia el progreso social.

Seit Galileo, Descartes und Newton ist der westliche Mensch überzeugt, mit der Mathematik den Schlüssel der Natur in den Händen zu halten. Mehr als das. Bei den Schwärmern wie den esoterischen Schmähern der Vernunft, die alle halb Jahrhunderte Konjunktur haben, gilt die Mathematik als deren 'Paradigma' und als Modell alles Logischen.

Und tatsächlich haben Messen, Wägen, Zählen und Kalkül seither das Leben der abendländischen Menschen erobert. War es der Geist der mathematisierten Naturwissenschaft, der die westlichen Gesellschaften durchdrungen hat, oder war es vielmehr das Vordringen von Geld- und Berechnungswesen in den Arbeitsalltag, das der mathematischen Weltanschauung den Boden bereitet hat?

Das 17. und 18. Jahrhundert war das Zeitalter der großen metaphysischen Systeme. Die mathematische Weltsicht ist allen gemeinsam: Descartes-Malebranche, Spinoza, Leibniz-Wolff und – nicht zu vergessen – Thomas Hobbes. Der Bedarf an Metaphysik war akut. Die in blutigen Kriegen zerrissene Religion hatte aufgehört, den Menschen Gewissheit und Orientierung zu geben. Die brauchten sie aber so nötig wie nie. Wie die katholische Kirche war die ständische Gesellschaftsordnung in den Grundfesten erschüttert. Das Bürgertum schickte sich an, ihre Erbschaft anzutreten. Es suchte nach einer neuen, eigenen Weltanschauung, in der sie ihre Wege vorgezeichnet finden und ihre Taten gerechtfertigt finden konnte.

Der Zweck der Metaphysik ist nicht derjenige der Naturwissenschaft. Wenn sie nach dem Sein fragt, dann meint sie in Wahrheit dessen Sinn. Den trägt sie aber heimlich schon lange in ihrer Brust: Rechenhaftigkeit. Wenn es gelingt, das ureigne Wesen des ganzen großen Universums als ein Rechenexempel zu konstruieren; wenn es zugleich gelingt, daraus das Sosein eines jeden Einzelnen als Bestand-Teil eines ('autopoietischen', würde man heute sagen) Systems herzuleiten - dann war es klar, dass der Sinn im Einzelnen nur der Sinn des großen Ganzen sein kann. 'Rationalität' muss der Sinn der Welt sein, damit sie der Sinn des Lebens sein kann.

Öffentlichkeit ist das Feld, auf dem die Metaphysik gegen die Religion antritt. An die Stelle der konfessionell reglementierten Universitäten treten Gelehrtengesellschaften, die mit dem gebildeten Bürgertum in engster Beziehung stehen, intellektuell und finanziell, und in der Druckerpresse verfügen sie gegen die Kanzeln über eine mächtige Waffe. And die Stelle der Autorität tritt das Argument.

Wenn die Metaphysik nach dem Sein fragt, meint sie in Wahrheit seinen Sinn – war das womöglich schon immer so? Damit hatte die Philosophie begonnen: der Frage nach dem "wahren Sein". Stand hinter der theoretischen Frage 'Was ist?' schon damals die praktische Frage 'Was soll ich tun'?

Die Philosophie im engeren Sinne beginnt mit dem Gegensatz von Heraklit und Parmenides, dem Gegensatz von ewigem Werden und ewigem Sein; einer am östlichen, der andre am westlichen Rand der hellenischen Welt. Mit ihnen beginnt der Anfang vom Ende des mythischen Zeitalters.

Ein Beinahe-noch-Zeitgenosse war Sophokles in Athen, dem Zentrum. Er überführte die Antigone aus dem Mythos in die Tragödie. Dort ist sie nicht mehr bloßes Opfer ihres Schicksals, sondern wählt zwischen Altem und Neuem Gesetz ihren Weg selber. Sie schwankt nicht wie Hamlet hin und her, so modern ist sie nicht. Ihre Wahl steht von Anbeginn fest. Aber modern ist: Es ist nicht die Zuflüsterung dieser oder jener Gottheit, sondern sie ist es selber, die gewählt hat.

Sophokles schrieb für die Öffentlichkeit des perikleischen Athen – in der Blüte der attischen Demokratie, die angewiesen war auf den eigen-sinnigen 'polites'; den Bürger, der für seine Wahl mit allem einstand, das er hatte. Ohne ihn hätte Athen den Pelepponesichen Krieg nicht überlebt. In der Tragödie wird der Übergang vom Mythos zur Vernunft sinnfälliger als in der Philosophie selbst. Die griechische Polis trug deutliche Züge einer bürgerlichen Gesellschaft.

Dann kamen das Römische Reich, die Völkerwanderung, der Verfall städtischer Kultur und die Neugeburt Europas im Zeichen der Feudalität. Nicht die Vernunft trat an die Stelle des Mythos, sondern die katholische Kirche. Sie war so doppelsinnig wie das finstere, bunte, turbulente Mittelalter. Zum einen war sie Dogma, aber zum andern lehrte sie, das Leben als eine Pilgerfahrt aufzufassen, auf der man scheitern kann. Sie lehrte die Menschen, auf ihr Gewissen zu achten – mehr, als es die antike Tragödie vermocht hätte; und nur auf ihr Gewissen, wenn man es streng nahm. Der Mensch, der im Mythos ein Spielball der Götter war, wurde im christlichen Glauben zum verantwortlichen Subjekt, das sein Leben führen muss.

Und als ihm die Pfaffen als Wegweiser suspekt wurden, musste 'die Natur' herhalten. Die Natur durchherrscht vom Logos, der Mensch ein Teil der Natur, seine Vernunft ihr ureigenes Gesetz – das ist der Sinn der Metaphysik. Ratio – reason, raison – heißt Rechnung. Dieser 'Sinn des Lebens', des bürgerlichen Erwerbslebens, war im Voraus längst "gefunden", die Philosophie musste ihn nur noch absegnen.

Die Gleichsetzung von Sinn und Sein gehört zu den naiven Selbstverständlichkeiten unseres Denkens. Sie liegt vor aller Reflexion, aller Überlegung, aller… Vernunft. Sie entstammt der kindlichen Annahme, dass das, was da ist, da sein muss; dass das, was in der Wirklichkeit geschieht, mit Notwendigkeit geschieht. Sich gegen das Notwendige stellen ist sinnlos.

Sinn 'gibt es' nicht an und für sich. Es muss immer einer da sein, für den irgendwas Sinn hat oder nicht. Und was kann das heißen: es hat für ihn Sinn? Es heißt, dass irgendeine Entscheidung, die er zu treffen hat, davon abhängt. Worüber kann ich entscheiden? Über das, was ich bin? Nein, über das, was ich tue. Für mich hat all das Sinn, was ich bei meinen Handlungsentscheidungen bedenken muss. Die Frage nach dem Sinn geht von den lebenden Subjekten aus. Bevor wir sie den Dingen stellen, müssen wir sie uns selber stellen. 'Ich bin ein Teil der Natur und unterliege ihrem Gesetz' ist eine Antwort, bevor die Frage gestellt wurde. Sie könnte falsch sein.

Die Gleichsetzung von Sein und Sinn ist dasselbe wie die Gleichsetzung von Logik und Naturgeschehen. Ihr gemeinsames Drittes ist die "Notwendigkeit". Tatsächlich stammt die Idee eines Not- wendigen nicht aus der Be- obachtung der Natur. Sie stammt aus der Erfahrung unseres Denkens: aus dem richtigen Schlussfolgern. Aus zwei Voraussetzungen ist nur ein Schluss möglich, nicht zwei oder drei. Und nur dieser! Das allein ist mit Notwendigkeit so. Was immer wir in der Welt der Tatsachen beobachten mögen, können wir per Analogie diesem logischen Modell der 'hinreichenden Begründung' nur annähern. Dass in der Wirklichkeit ein Ereignis 'mit Notwendigkeit' aus einem vorangegangenen Ereignis folgt, lässt sich nicht nur nicht beobachten. Es lässt sich nicht einmal sagen, was wir uns darunter vorstellen sollen.

Actualmente, en España, los cantautores brillan por su ausencia, pero también por su calidad. En las próximas entradas haré un recorrido completo por los mayores autores de canción en nuestro país, espero no dejarme ninguno.

Quiero hacer mención especial a un par de locales en los que se puede disfrutar de estos extraños y excepcionales cantantes. Las salas Galileo y Clamores, con sus actuaciones denominadas “Canción de autor” dan paso a todo tipo de cantautores, desde los nuevos en la profesión hasta los grandes clásicos. Un ejemplo es Javier Krahe, el viernes 31 en Galileo.

Otros lugares de interés pueden considerarse la Sala Búho Real, el Café Libertad 8, o la sala Zanzíbar. En estos lugares se vive un ambiente de nostalgia propia de los cantautores. El humo del tabaco se entremezcla con los sentimientos, que están a flor de piel. Guitarras, voces y almas se encuentran en estos lugares para deleite del espectador. Y es que, la conexión entre los autores y el público es total en los conciertos.

La presencia de cantautores en España puede colocarse sobre 1965, año en el que Joan Manuel Serrat canta sus primeros temas en el programa Radioscope, en Radio Barcelona. Desde ese punto han surgido en los años 60 y 70 toda una serie de nuevos artistas que se colocan al rededor de las dos grandes figuras del mundo “cantautoril”: el propio Serrat y Joaquín Sabina.

Los 80 y la movida madrileña explotaron la vena creativa de la sociedad creando la época más prolífica del pop en castellano, entre el que se incluyen a los cantautores. El trío denominado ‘Santísima Trinidad’, compuesto por Antonio Vega, Enrique Urquijo y José María Granados compusieron las mejores canciones de la época, y también las más tristes. Unas guitarras maravillosas, unas voces frías y unas letras que erizaban la piel hasta al acero.

La década de los 90 proporcionó la última estela de cantautores en España entre los que destaca Ismael Serrano. A su lado aparecen otros autores como Quique González, Carlos Chaouen, Tontxu, Marwan, César Rodríguez, y así todo un reguero de grandes compositores. Esto demuestra que el espíritu de la sociedad sigue vivo, sigue en movimiento, sigue inspirándonos y sigue llenando nuestros corazones. Y que siga por siempre.

Defining A.I. - On October 12 the Loebner Prize for Artificial Intelligence will conduct a formal Turing test of six machines to determine if through the use of complex algorithms if the machines can simulate human conversation so well that testers will not be able to distinguish the machine from an actual human when engaging in a text conversation back and forth. There is a link to a site that displays 2 text conversations, 1 where the subject is talking to a human and the other where they're talking to a machine. So far it's very easy to tell which is which but in time that may be much harder, which raises the question of what would real artificial intelligence entail.

Oo, what if instead we tatooed numbers on their arms and threw them into concentration camps until such time as we can shove them into ovens and gas chambers? Don't worry; it's cool. Now he says many of his "dear friends" are gay and he was only joking. Yeah, I bet.

ATHEIST DISCRIMINATION & DENIGRATION:

Hank Fox has quit his job at a newspaper because they ran an unnecessary quote, in spite of his protests that it was blatant bigotry against atheists:

The final anecdote of the article was about his plane getting shot down, and one quote the reporter used was him saying something like “My co-pilot was an atheist before, but he’s been a good Christian ever since.”

I flagged the quote with a note to my immediate editor: “Ahem. If this quote said ‘My co-pilot was a Jew before, but he’s been a good Christian ever since,’ would we even think about including it?”

In my head was a very clear understanding that the quote was a serious insult to a certain demographic. I happen to be one, in this case, but I would certainly have flagged the line if it was that equivalent quote about a Jew being converted by the experience into being a Christian, even though I’m not a Jew. If it said “My co-pilot was a black man before, but this scared him white,” I would’ve brought it up, even though I don’t happen to be black. If the story made a similar statement about a gay or lesbian, or a handicapped person, I would have flagged it. . . Hey, if it’s vital factual information, it goes into the newspaper no matter whose nose gets out of joint. But if it’s just casual insults or jokes that you know in advance will offend, you just don’t throw it in with the attitude of “what the hell, screw ‘em.”

Carl Sagan's name reclaimed - Last month I blogged about The Carl Sagan Institute of UFOlogy, a bunch of Brazilian UFO nuts who claimed not only that Jesus is a flying saucer pilot but that Sagan was a secret believer in alien visitations. Well now they've removed Sagan's name from their title and replaced it with Galileo for some reason.

Astrology and Jell-O - Stuart Buck persists in claiming that scientists have a bias against the supernatural, and that we dismiss it out of hand. Here is just 1 example of why he's wrong. This is actually the story of an old epic fail. It involves skeptic Robert Grumbine testing a specific claim made by astrologer, Thomas Seers involving Bill Cosby's favorite brand of gelatin. And well, Grumbine falsified Seers' stupid hypothesis. But maybe this instance just happened to occur while Mercury was in retrograde, so maybe that's why the astrologer was made to look like an idiot.

Jenny McCarthy gets Rickroll'd - As previously reported, Jenny was going to be involved in a web chat after her latest Oprah appearance where she'd answer people's questions. Birds Have 'Thumbs,' Alligator Gene Study Hints - "Bird wings only have three fingers, having evolved from remote ancestors that, like humans and most reptiles, had five fingers. Biologists have typically used embryology to identify the evolutionary origin (homology) of structures; the three fingers of the bird wing develop from cartilage condensations that are found in the same positions in the embryo as fingers two, three and four of humans (the index, middle and ring fingers). Another bad day for Young Earth Creationists.

Questo sono stati i Rocket Boys: ragazzi con un sogno. E chiunque abbia avuto questo sogno non può trattenere la commozione di fronte ad un razzo che — anche solo per un attimo — ci dà l'illusione che l'infinito sia a portata di mano. Un razzo così… sto cercando un aggettivo, e l'unico che mi viene è perpendicolare.

Il film è un piccolo capolavoro di prevedibile insuccesso. Il regista è Joe Johnston, un esperto di effetti speciali, fino ad allora famoso per Jumanji; l'attrice di richiamo è una Laura Dern già in fase calante, che fa una parte importante ma tutto sommato minore. Jake Gyllenhaal è praticamente all'esordio nel ruolo di Homer Hickam, l'ingegnere della NASA dalla cui autobiografia il film è tratto. Chris Cooper è quel che si dice uno di mestiere. Insomma, niente di eccezionale: ma l'alchimìa funziona alla grande. Nel film c'è tutto quello che ci vuole: un padre vero — più vero di quel che sembra alla prima visione — e il desiderio di prenderlo a pugni; un'insegnante che ci crede, ma che purtroppo ha fretta; un preside-sergente che sa riconoscere i suoi errori; e poi la speranza, la tenacia, il sogno americano, la miniera, lo sciopero, il riscatto, l'amicizia, i padroni, gli operai, i fratelli maggiori, il secchione. Perfino qualche ragazza con la gonna a pieghe. E tanti, tantissimi razzi, sempre più perpendicolari.

Sono passati cinquant'anni — proprio oggi fanno 51, per la precisione — e i miei studenti sognano di diventare calciatori. Io, tutti gli anni, faccio vedere questo film alle terze medie.

A volte, qualcuno capisce.

Heute hat ein guter Bekannter zu mir gesagt, bzw. mir geschrieben, ich hätte einen Knall. Grund genug, dem Ursprung dieser Redewendung einmal auf den Grund zu gehen. Dazu eignet sich natürlich eine Suchmaschine ganz besonders gut und diese leitete mich dann ohne größere Umwege zum Lexikon der Pro7-Sendung Galileo.

Also: Diese Redensart hat ihren Ursprung im Mittelalter. Ein Knall ist in diesem Falle ein kurzer, heftiger Schlag auf den Kopf. Dadurch kann das Gehirn natürlich in Mitleidenschaft gezogen werden: der Geschlagene wäre  ggf. verrückt oder dumm.                                                                                                                                                              So. Bin ich also etwas schlauer jetzt, trotzdem verrückt. Oder gar dumm? Ich habe ein großes Problem damit, wenn Menschen, die ich eigentlich mag, sowas zu mir sagen. Ich nehme mir soetwas gleich zu Herzen, bin furchtbar sensibel und wenn ich nicht aufpasse, fliessen sogar Tränen. So auch heute. Es war wie ein Schock. Inzwischen ist dieser einer unterschwelligen Enttäuschung gewichen. Klar, man sagt im Affekt Dinge, die vielleicht nicht so ok sind, ich werfe meinem Bekannten da auch gar nichts vor. Dennoch bin ich es nicht gewohnt, dass Freunde so mit mir sprechen und ich kann mich da auch nur schwer zur Wehr setzen. Für Andere kann ich stark sein, für mich selbst nur dann, wenn es nicht um meine Persönlichkeit geht.

Langsam werde ich verdammt wütend auf mich selber. Warum bin ich so sensibel? Ich bin 28 Jahre alt, hab schon einige schwarze Tage überstehen müssen und habe mir mein Selbstbewusstsein hart erkämpft. Warum also rumheulen?! Dann hab ich eben nen Knall. Was soll's.

Wird mich schon nicht umbringen...  :-)

The point of the project in a nutshell was to promote Galileo applications, or at least provide a useful insight into the business case for Galileo applications.

The project focused on the mobile handset side of things and before moving onto the subject of this post I thought that I would review some of the conclusions and output from the project, even though the project finished only last year the market moves fast. At the time the project finished the Nokia N95 had only just been released and Nokia had just announced the tie up between themselves and the digital mapping company Navteq.

So lets look at some predictions from the project at the time.

Estimating the size of the GNSS handset market.

So at the end of 2005 the number of mobile subscribers grew to 2.129 billion an increase of about 384 million from the start of the year , this figure is expected to increase to around 3964 billion by the end of 2011 (Source CMS info)

In the same time the population of the world will reach around 7 billion, meaning that if we were to believe the figures and at current growth of mobile phone penetration we can, round about the end of 2009 we should see mobile phone penetration passing the 50% mark.

That in short is a lot of mobile phones!

I won't go into the details of this number, the project did break this figure down by market and region but that is too much for this post.

The next snippet of information from the AGILE is the number of these phones that will have a GNSS capability, and again without going into how the figures were obtained too much, but mostly from combining several sources of analyst data.

The project estimated that by the end of 2020 the number of phones with a satellite positioning capability could reach 1 billion units, my impression is that this number will be exceeded quite easily.

So where is the iPhone in all of this, well the number of iPhone sold is small when compared to Nokia's 40% market share but the key thing about the iPhone as with most Apple products is the ease of use and integration with Apple's iTune store.

The AGILE project, the project looked at some of the GNSS application that users would most like to see was that over 50% of users most want mobile mapping and traffic information services, the project also predicted that there would be a growth in the next 2 to 3 years of.

• Strong move towards usage/content segmentation with an increasing number of POI's and services proposed
• Increasing desire for seamless navigation experience across
• multiple "location aware " device

So lets turn our attention to the iPhone, Apple's application store which is an open development platform provides us with a snapshot of the integration of travel applications and a GNSS enabled handset, currently its the first to do this in this way although T-Mobile will launch something similar in Nov.

The killer application/s for iPhone is expected to be location based services, which for someone who has been in this industry for a while it is pleasing to note that this will soon be realised.

The reason the LBS seems to be high on the wish list is that in the first weekend of opening the Apple application store there was over 10 million downloads, startup companies and rushing in to develop LBS applications amongst the raft of social networking applications already available.

On apple's own website for iPhone apps under the travel application category there are currently as of writing 182 travel applications for the USA, while not the highest number for a category it is still impressive, we can then look at how popular the travel applications are by a click of a button in the actual iTunes program, it is difficult at this point to get good data as the itunes stores are filtered by country but we can do a very unscientific poll by looking at each country in turn.

In France, Germany and the UK traffic information, metro maps, and mapping applications are always in the top ten of applications along with guide me applications for cities around Europe. In the USA we see traffic and mapping applications reflecting the choices in Europe.

Now I know that I'm building an opinion based on my subjective evaluation of the i-Tune's store, but the wish for information on traffic, metro, next bus times is quite high. People it seems want this information and in the absence of a unified system they are currently building themselves a selection of applications that deliver their needs.

Mapping with one application, bus times with another, traffic cameras and information with another, hotel booking and searching with one more. Not exactly seamless but at the price for an application being in the few Euros people can afford to do this.

Sometimes it is a struggle I feel, to get the i-Travel concept over to people but its exactly the example of many different applications being needed that we are trying to address, in the USA you can buy a next bus application which is great if you are in certain cites not so good in another where there is no information and what if the traffic network is jammed on the bus route? You would have to use the traffic information from another application and compare it against the bus route.

These are still vertical silo implementations, which is exactly the reason i-travel has been formed to offer an integrated solution.

Our solution to the problem is not to tie all the apps together through use of software, but to bring the traffic information providers, public transport providers and navigation companies together and operate under a single architecture and standard to interface with a digital travel assistant on your mobile phone.

This group of companies would operate under an eMarketplace that has an open architecture with digital rights management, billing and security. Such an organisation to support a multi modal travel journey is not currently a reality.

Under the Apple iPhone developer conditions it is unlikely that there will be  any progress towards bringing together several applications to provide a seamless assistant as  Apple restrict the application developers from talking to one another when they sign up to the develop platform.

While this does mean that there are lots of applications for travel it means that people are forced to use several to get all the information for a seamless journey. This is not in the interests of the traveller nor is it in line with the efforts of organisations like ERTICO who are promoting open architecture and travel without walls.

The experience of iPhone does give us a good indication on the type of information and applications that people want for mobile travel programs, but the development of a single marketplace is something that is still missing, i-Travel is not about building services as developers in  the Apple application store are producing, but we are building the structures to enable services to operate seamlessly together, which is not happening currently.

We started this post looking at the penetration of GNSS mobile phones and went on to look at the travel applications being developed for such phones, it is clear to me that location based travel services will be a reality but the operation of these application together is something that is still missing and this is what the i-Travel consortium is all about.

Seamless travel can only be realised when people providing the services operate under a single standard and architecture, then several iPhone applications could be used together to offer the traveller all the information that they need to get from A to B.

The point of this explanation is to familiarize you to my wonderings, so you can understand what I’m trying to say.

Berger’s talk was of paintings, but I wonder if it can be applied to music, or words. I’ve been listening to a few remakes of songs. The ones that Marilyn Manson remade definitely have a different meaning from the original, which much is clear by the tonal change. But what about “beat it” the remake that Fallout Boy did? It’s very similar to the original in musical tone. Does it have a different meaning? Or does it depend on the listener? I love Johnny Cash’s version of “Hurt”, but I cannot stand NIN’s version, NIN is the original. You could ask me why I prefer it, but my answer is merely my perception of the song. It’s not really what the song should be/is. So I guess Berger’s idea of mystification can be applied to anything along with this language f art, as I want to call it now. But then these ideas do pertain to everything.

What meanings have poets put to something as simple as a tree? Why does a tree evoke something more than just a thought: “this is a tree”. Even I have written about trees overcoming adversity. It is just a tree that grows the way its genetics have programmed it to. It is not overcoming anything. But I perceived it as doing just that and put meaning to it. Why? Why did I hide that a tree is just a tree? Why did I add a layer of mystification to the tree? Why do we write about something that is nothing more than that object with prose and imagery and ideas that may not even pertain to it? Why do we sing about these things? Why do we paint these things? Why do we give meaning to nothing?

Because we are human and the way we are designed has wired us to NEED meaning in our lives, in everything that we do, to feel important, and to feel like we are significant in the world, in the realm of being. How large is the realm in which we live? How vast? If you judge the realm in terms of earth, then you have a slight significance. But what about beyond what you see? The sky is an illusion. Inhale. What are you breathing in chemical terms? That is sky.

The sky, what people have praised and cursed and thought so much of, is what we breathe, is a trick of the light. We perceive meanings in this expanse of blue, but there is no meaning.

For hundreds of years people, civilizations, had believed that everything revolved around us, humans. When it was proved that we revolved around the sun, we, as a race, rebelled. Why? Because it proved that we were that much more insignificant. We were that much more in denial. Man has an innate need to be important and influential.

In more modern times, we have the theory of evolution that people (mainly religious) rebel against. Why? Because it proves that we are just an accident of nature, that we were not created by some being with the intention of consciousness. We just came into existence.

Humans are an accident, just like everything else. Consciousness was an accident. Advanced thought has been ostracized for years, till somewhere along the line the same genetic defect that allowed the first person’s idea to come to focus comes around in more numerous quantities and we finally accept that idea as truth. All truths we have found were always there, but we needed a genetic defect to fester and come through in a “survival of the fittest” scenario in order for us to perceive them.

What is truth? We are nothing. A tree is just a tree. The sky is an illusion. We were not created. Humans need meaning in their lives because we need to feel important, significant in some way.

It seems strange that solar radiation should be the cause of such an outage after all, the radiation characteristics of the MEO orbit were the subject of not inconsiderable assessment during the Galileo development activities. Furthermore, GPS and GLONASS satellites (and sister-craft GIOVE-A) have all been operating there for many years quite happily. If this really does turn out to be the cause of the problem then it does not bode well for the engineering of the satellite or for ESA's ability to specify the requirements for a MEO constellation. We are at a solar minima at the moment, if the satellite is this vulnerable to radiation heaven knows how it will survive through solar max (we will really need eLoran!).

Of course it could all just be those pesky capacitors again...

Seit Galileo stellen die Wissenschaften nicht nur Fragen, sondern beantworten sie auch, und jede Antwort wirft (mindestens) eine neue Frage auf.

Das Buch der Natur sei in der Sprache der Mathematik geschrieben, hatte Galileo verkündet. Das ist seither zum Gemeinplatz westlicher Bildung geworden.

Descartes hatte die Welt in zwei Substanzen zerteilt, eine res extensa, die Materie, die sich durch ihre räumliche Ausdehnung zu erkennen gibt, und die res cogitans, den Geist, der außerhalb von Raum und Zeit ist. Doch eines ist ihnen gemeinsam: die mathematische Struktur, und an der erkennt man ihre gemeinsame

Abkunft vom selben Schöpfergott. Spinoza tat die beiden Teile wieder zusammen, bei ihm ist es die eine, geistige Substanz, die sich selber ausdehnt, "deus sive natura", und wie tut sie das? "More geometrico", auf geometrische Weise! War bei Descartes Gott ein Mathematiker, so ist die Gottnatur bei Spinoza Mathematik. Isaac Newton, der erste Systematiker der modernen Physik, betitelte sein Hauptwerk " Philosophiae naturalis principia mathematica", die mathematischen Grundlagen der Naturphilosophie. Und Leibniz endlich, der die strenge Naturwissenschaft in Deutschland eingeführt hat, überlegte ernstlich, ob nicht Gott selber in mathematischen Formel spräche!

Die Herrschaft des Rationalismus war Herrschaft der Metaphysik. Die Metaphysik sei aus der abendländischen Wissenschaft inzwischen vertrieben? Nur die metaphysische Verpackung ist gefallen. Der Kern bleibt. Der Einfall, die Gesetze der Mathematik seien gleichzeitig die Gesetze der Vernunft und der Natur, bedarf keiner zusätzlichen Metaphysik. Er ist selber metaphysisch.

Die Mathematik ist nicht, wie unsere eigne Schullaufbahn vermuten macht, aus dem kleinen Einmaleins hervorgegangen. Zwar hatten die Babylonier ihr Interesse auf die Arithmetik konzentriert; aber sie dienten ihnen nur zur Astrologie. Mathematik entstand erst, als die Griechen Thales und Pythagoras die Zahlen in den Dienst der Geometrie, der Anschauung räumlicher Verhältnisse nahmen. Das Leitbild der Mathematik - die vollkommene Gestalt - ist ästhetisch. Ihre Verfahren sind Anschauung und Konstruktion. Auf etwelche sinnliche Erfahrung - über die man streiten könnte - ist sie nicht angewiesen. Sie begründet sich aus sich selbst, und nur so konnte sie zur Grundlage der allgemeinen wissenschaftlichen Methode werden.

Aber ist nicht gerade die Geometrie aus den Dingen der Welt abgeschaut?!

Plato kannte fünf vollkommene Körper: Kugel, Würfel, Pyramide; Zylinder, Konus.

Es sind die jeweiligen dreidimensionalen Kombinationen von Kreis, Quadrat und Dreieck. Drei Dimensionen sind 'vollkommener' als zwei, bzw. Körper sind vollkommener als Flächen.

Hat man eines von denen 'von der Natur abgeschaut'? Mehr oder minder runde Formen kommen in 'der Natur' vor; Kugeln nicht. Kugel 'entsteht' als Idee des vervollkommneten 'runden' Körpers. Wobei Vollkommenheit ebenb keine logische, sondern eine anschauliche, eine ästhetische Qualität ist! Finden sich Würfel, Pyramiden, Zylinder usw. in der Natur vor? Es finden sich Formen, die wie fehlerhafte Annäherungen aussehen. Damit sie so aussehen können, müssen die reinen Formen dem inneren Auge aber schon gewärtig sein. Und das geht nur, wenn das innere Auge die Konstruktion aus Kreis, Quadrat und Dreieck schon vorgenommen hat! Das ist eine erhebliche Abstraktions- und Reflexionsleistung.

(Abstraktion und Reflexion sind nur zwei Sichtweisen auf denselben Denkakt: Absehen auf das jeweils Wichtige ist zugleich Absehen von dem jeweils Unerheblichen.)

Denn zuvor mussten vor dem inneren Auge die Flächen selber konstruiert werden! Allein den vollkommenen Kreis kann man in der Außenwelt sehen – am wolkenlosen Himmel.

Es ist ja denkbar, dass der Anblick des einzig perfekten Kreises – der Sonnenscheibe – und ihrer imperfekten Parodie, des Mondes – den Anlass zur Idee anschaulicher Vollkommenheit gegeben hat; aber eine erfahrungsmäßige Abstraktion aus dem Anblick vieler perfekten Kreise war es nicht: weil es nur diesen einen gibt; und eine Reihe imperfekter Karikaturen – die werdenden und vergehenden Ringe auf dem Wasser usw... Nachgemacht werden kann dieser eine perfekte Kreis aber nicht auf 'anschaulichem' Weg; er muss konstruiert werden aus Punkt und Radius: wieder eine Abstraktionsleistung.

Die andern beiden Grundformen finden sich nicht in perfekter Gestalt in den Natur vor. Sie müssen – vielleicht in anschaulicher Analogie zur Sonnenscheibe – erdacht werden, um bemerken zu können, dass sich in der Natur… unvollkommene Annäherungen vorfinden.

Und erst nach all dem können die fünf perfekten Körper erdacht werden; und kann man sich einbilden, diese Idealentwürfe lägen ihren unvollständigen natürlichen Nachbildungen "in Wahrheit" zu Grunde; in einer verborgenen Wahrheit selbstverständlich.

Die Arithmetik hat ältere Wurzeln, die bis zu den Babyloniern zurückreichen. Ist nun die Zahl ein "Naturverhältnis"? Beruht sie nicht darauf, dass die Dinge 'im Raum' eine Grenze haben und man sie neben einander stellen und also zählen kann? Das sieht nur so aus. Tatsächlich zählen wir die Dinge nicht neben-, sondern nach einander! Und das geschieht in der Zeit.

Paläoanthropologen haben aus frühester Vorzeit Stäbchen geborgen, die in regelmäßigen Abständen mit Kerben versehen sind. Sie interpretieren sie als Zählstäbe, die Vorläufer der Zahlensysteme; nämlich so, dass ihre Hersteller den Daumennagel auf die erste Kerbe gehalten haben: "zuerst..."; auf die zweiter Kerbe: "dann..."; dritte Kerbe: "und danach...". Da wird das zeitliche Nacheinander der Zahlen archäologisch sinnfällig!

Und wem die erwähnten Zählstäbe der Paläontologen als Indiz zu dürftig scheinen, der kann es ja mit einem Gedankenexperiment versuchen.

Was immer Zahlen sonst auch noch sein mögen, eins sind sie ganz bestimmt: Zeichen. Was muss man bezeichnen? Etwas, das man nicht stets vor Augen hat und doch 'behalten' will. Denn auf alles andere kann man mit dem Finger zeigen. Kleine Mengen hat man stets vor Augen: 3 Äpfel, 4 Beine usw. Bezeichnen müsste man größere Mengen. Mit welchen größeren Mengen könnten aber unsere Vorfahren - ihres Zeichens Jäger und Sammler - regelmäßig zu tun gehabt haben? So regelmäßig, dass sie sie dauerhaft bezeichnen mussten?!

Sie waren Nomaden; große Vorräte kannten sie nicht. Bleibt also übrig - die Zeit. Die Zeiträume müssen bezeichnet werden: wie viele Tage bis Vollmond, Sonnenwende und Tag- und Nachtgleiche, Jahreszeiten, Jahre... Gerade Nomaden, die ihr Leben buchstäblich durch Zeit und Raum führen, müssen mental Zeiträume 'vorweg nehmen' können, müssen wissen, 'wie lange wir brauchen bis...' - z. B. bis zur nächsten Wasserstelle. Denn solange sie keine Wanderkarten und keine Tachometer haben, können sie Wege nur als Zeit darstellen. (Noch im Mittelalter wurden Ackergrößen als 'Tagewerke' gemessen.)

Sagt nicht aber schon der gesunde Menschenverstand, dass eins und ein zwei sind? 'Ursprünglich', d. h. in unmittelbarer sinnlicher Anschauung, kommen Zahlen nur als Ordnungszahlen vor: als Nacheinander in einem 'an sich' ununterschiedenen Zeitverlauf: erstens, zweitens, drittens… zählen kann ich so noch nicht. Denn es könnte bedeuten: erstens ein Lufthauch, zweitens ein Elefant, drittens eine Untertasse. Um aus den Momenten im Zeitverlauf ein Werkzeug ("Denkzeug") zum Zählen zu machen, muss ich von der Zeit selber absehen und auf die zu zählenden Sachen reflektieren.

Vorab: Warum, wozu sind sie 'zu' zählen? Es braucht zunächst einmal eine Absicht; zum Beispiel die Absicht, Sachen zu verteilen. Ich verteile Sachen, die 'in einer gewissen Hinsicht' gleich sind, auf so und so viele Posten, die ihrerseits in gewisser Hinsicht gleich sind; zum Beispiel Essbares an Hungrige. Ich muss aus der Mannigfaltigkeit der Sachen dasjenige heraus suchen, das sich unter der Bedeutung des Essbaren zusammenfassen lässt. Danach muss ich auf diejenigen achten, die mir als hungrig bekannt sind. Erst dann kann ich aus den Ordnungszahlen erstens, zweitens, drittens… die Zahlen 1, 2, 3… abstrahieren.

Und erst, nachdem all diese Denkleistungen vollbracht wurden, kann von "Erfahrung" geredet werden. Erfahrung ist nicht das bloße Registrieren von Erlebensdaten, sondern ihre sinnvolle Unterscheidung und Anordnung. Die Absicht geht voraus. Ohne vorgängige Absicht keine vorfindliche Bedeutung.

The duo have at least one true Breeders' Cup contender in Raven's Pass, while Rainbow View will also be popular if she makes the trip to California following their victories in Berkshire.

That view proved totally incorrect as the colt, running in the colours of Princess Haya for the first time, comprehensively reversed the form with old adversary Henrythenavigator.

The latter had proved too good on each of the three previous occasions the pair had met in the 2000 Guineas, St James's Palace and Sussex Stakes but he met his match this time.

Gosden said: "It all went wrong in the Guineas from the draw but he ran a blinder in the St James's Palace.

"We knew this time we would be a little handier, that was the only plan - be handier.

"The plan is now to go to the Breeders' Cup, whether that is for the Mile or the Classic we will have to see - he sees his races out much better now.

"He has been on the go since February, but he looks great in his coat."

Rainbow View also dug deep to maintain her unbeaten record in the Meon Valley Stud Fillies' Mile and give Gosden and Fortune a notable double.

The Dynaformer filly had won her previous three starts on the bridle but Fantasia served it up to her at the furlong marker and Rainbow View responded in style for a two-and-a-half-length win.

Gosden added: "She's not very big but she's all heart - you find a lot of the very good ones are not big."

Richard Hannon and Richard Hughes collected the biggest of all sales races as Soul City refused to give away the Parknasilla Hotel Goffs Million at the Curragh on Sunday.

The combination's Penny's Gift took the valuable event at Ascot on Friday with a late charge but it was forcing tactics from the front here aboard the French Group Three winner and 5-2 favourite.

He drifted from the rail as Akrisrun challenged up his inside but kept finding more to hold off Jim Bolger's pair Gan Amhras and Intense Focus.

Hannon said: "There's no reason why he would not go on and be a nice three-year-old.

"He's one we could pack up this year and maybe have a go at the Guineas."

Hannon then proceeded to dominate the Parknasilla Hotel Goffs Fillies Million - although Hughes was on the wrong one with Baileys Cacao finishing second to stablemate Minor Vamp.

Favourite Luminous Eyes threw down a determined challenge on the far side but she had no answer to the devastating turn of foot demonstrated by Minor Vamp (10-1) and Michael Kinane in the centre.

A thoroughly respectable third to Rainbow View at Newmarket 50 days ago, she settled the event very quickly, despite a late effort from 9-1 chance Baileys Cacao.

Sea The Stars (7-4) came out on top in a closely-fought renewal of the Juddmonte Beresford Stakes.

Trainer John Oxx, who won this race in 2002 and 2003 with the brilliant pair Alamshar and Azamour, also saddled another leading contender in Mourayan.

But Kinane picked the right one and exuded confidence aboard Sea The Stars.

The half-brother to Galileo took a little while to assert himself once hitting the front, but was in command in the final furlong and had half a length in reserve of Mourayan for a stable one-two.

Bookmakers had mixed reactions on the winner for next year's Derby. He is 12-1 from 20s with Paddy Power, now 14-1 with William Hill - but 20s with VC Bet.

Nearly-horse King's Apostle picked the perfect moment to start winning again in the Group Two John Guest Diadem Stakes at Ascot, while Sixties Icon overcame a sluggish start to take the Grosvenor Casinos Cumberland Lodge Stakes.

And man, it totally got me hooked! It was your usual gender-bender storyline of girl posing like a boy and entering an all-boys high school to follow her idol, who was a former renowned high jumper, and whom she wanted to start high jumping again. The main story as such isn't cute at all but some of the actors ( and their characters ) are really cool.

There's an almost main character, Nakatsu Shuichi, played by Ikuta Toma, who's just awesomely sweet! And his monologues will definitely leave you clutching your sides with laughter! He plays a self-acclaimed 'hot blooded soccer player' high school student, and I really don't think anybody else could have done such justice to the Nakatsu character.

Then there's the Kayashima guy who's a psychic and Nakatsu's best friend. He's equally well-developed and the actor ( I forgot his name ) is really suited to him. And I love his glamorous look which is shown just once in one of the ending episodes.

Nanba Minami, the school playboy and a very responsible dorm leader, is another of my favourite characters. Played by Mizushima Hiro, who also plays Asamoto Soshi, another of my fav character from Zettai Kareshi J-drama, he's loads of fun and really gorgeous, lol.

There's another hottie too - Kagurazaka, played by Shirota Yuu ( also played Tezuka in PoT live action movie ). He's like... real hot with an awesome hairstyle. And the way he roams around with his hands in his tracksuit pants and looking about with a detached look - ooh, he's definitely the oomph factor in Hana Kimi. The lead characters, Mizuki and Sano, didn't really get to me much. Mizuki was still pretty good, just too cute for a boy, heh. But Sano totally disappointed me. He was just too... boring. I had a feeling that I won't be able to hang out with him for even an hour, forget spend my high school days bunked in the same room ( like Mizuki ). While Nakatsu, Kayashima and Nanba would definitely guys I'd love to have as my friends! xD Anyway, that's about it~ I'd definitely recommend it to anybody who just wants to have a bit of fun, and not watch something serious or thought-provoking.

Moving on, there were two really sensible dramas included as well : Liar Game and Galileo. The former one being based off a corporate company using people to play a money game. It deals with pretty much all of the possible human emotions involved and is one awesome piece, minus some boring repetitions. Still, gets a high recommendation from me because somehow, it gets you hooked once you've watched the first three-four episodes. And Matsuda Shota and Toda Erika have acted their parts pretty well.

Galileo, on the other hand, deals with scientific crimes with a supernatural feel. The story revolves around a police detective and a physics professor who solve various seemingly unsolvable cases with a completely scientific approach. Their cases involve spontaneous combustion, soul floating, teleportation, foreseeing dreams to name a few. Each episode is a standalone except the last two. The ending was quite pathetic in my opinion, given the awesome flow of the series otherwise. Those people really knew how to deliver the plot but somehow, messed up the ending quite a bit. Still, I'd watch it for the all the other episodes definitely. Intriguing and detailed, it will surely catch your eye! The only drawback I'd like to mention would be Fukuyama Masaharu's weird laughter. It's seriously horrible, take my word for it! -shiver- xD

The others I caught up with were My Boss My Hero and Hana Yori Dango. The former one is a roller coaster ride of high school fun and feelings - an really good piece of work, while the latter is based off the manga by the same name. And doesn't do any justice to the manga at all! And seriously, I just don't get what the damn is the whole hype about Matsumoto Jun! Okay, so he's kind of cute and sings wells, but that's about it. He totally trashed Tsukasa, the brash and cute lead, and my recent fav character ( yeah, I just have too many favourite characters but the alltime favourite is the one and only Sanzo, from Saiyuki ). The actress who played Makino didn't really feel like her either.

If there were some actors I liked in this one, they were Makino's family and Nishikado Soujiro, who was played by Matsuda Shota with a glamorous look, quite the opposite of what he had in Liar Game. I'll be downloading HYD Returns but that's just because I love Tsukasa too much to not watch it. Otherwise, I'd suggest you go read the manga or watch the anime but do not go for the drama. -sigh-

Going back to My Boss My Hero, Tomoya Nagase and Kazuo are totally going to win your hearts! Nagase is a gangster's older son who is forced to complete high school if he wants to inherit his father's position. And thus begins the wonderful adventure of a 27-year old guy acting like a 17-year old school kid, and actually enjoying all the activities later on. He's even the CR as that supposedly equals leading a corporation in his mind and so, the class strengthens and unites under his command. It's a sweet and hilarious piece, which can get quite serious at times, and there can even be times when you can learn something from it. ;-)

The last one for now would be Honey and Clover ( Hachimitsu to Clover ). It's based off the manga, of course, but has been quite changed from what I've heard ( no, I haven't read the manga yet ). Many people I know found it repetitive and boring, but if you ask me, I really liked it. It revolves around five art college friends and their lives - personal, love,
