Copy and Paste also, um euch iLiKETRAiNS vorzustellen.

Ich will eintauchen, ganz genau zuhören.

Tatsächlich heißt das Gesamtwerk, also Debütalbum, Elegies To Lessons Learnt.

"The tailor was the first to go;
we burnt his clothes
and buried him low."

iLiKETRAiNS are apost-rock band from Leeds, England. Their songs are composed of expansive orchestral and guitar-based sounds. They are signed to Beggars Banquet Records, though their debut EP, "Progress Reform", was released on Fierce Panda Records in June, 2006. iLiKETRAiNS' first studio album, Elegies to Lessons Learnt, was recently released through Beggars Banquet on 1 October, 2007. The band also run a night at The Brudenell Social Club in Leeds called Signal Failure.

On 7 April, 2007, they featured on the early-hours music television programme The JD Set, which featured live performance clips and interviews. David Martin talked about how he wanted their music to have a "sense of location" and that this was lacking in music like "Godspeed and Sigur Rós".

They work on concept albums which are also optically represented on stage, by means of video projections and the band's actual image (the mournings on their arms for example). The songs on the Elegies to Lessons Learnt are based on tragic historical events and figures and the songs were created after thorough research and study.

This is a band I became aware of through Uncut Magazine. As ever I am not too sure of the 'ins-and-outs' of the band, preferring to let their music do the talking for them.

That said, what would a post from me be without a bit of pointless preamble? Based or formed in Leeds, iLIKETRAiNS are labelled (in our seemingly endless need to pigeon hole things) as post-rock. I'm not even sure what that means other than 'after rock' which doesn't make sense. They remind me of my perennial favourites Van Der Graaf Generator which I suppose means that they are progressive rock. In brief, expect complex and thoughtful lyrics against complex and thoughtful musicianship. They could possibly be described as coming from the same musical stable as the likes of Mogwai and Explosions In The Sky.

This track is about Bobby Fisher the chess grandmaster who became the first US-born official world chess champion in the 1970s. This was portrayed by some as a victory for Capitalist ideology over Communism as the previous champion(s) were Russian. As the song says: "they make mountains out of molehills". It's not often that a song comes out about a chess grandmaster, particularly one with such a haunting musical backdrop (the song not the Mr Fischer). The band's web site is here: iLIKETRAiNS.

I probably should spend my limited energy fighting and worrying about the big injustices of the world: y'know, poverty, discrimination, inequality, environmental destruction, Boris Johnson, and the like (please note these are not necessarily commensurate). Yet of late I've found myself getting irate about how the fucking Kooks - the aural equivalent of an out-of-date pack of egg mayo sarnies - can get so much airplay and be so popular when the sublime beauty of iLiKETRAiNS get over-looked and barely half fill the Roadhouse in Manc a couple of weeks or so back (yep, this review is late again...blame neo-liberalism).

Let's be honest: most people passionate about music love the exclusivity of the obscure and the little-known. However, there are times when I want to the whole god-damned world to hear music of the finest quality like iLiKETRAiNS. Yet such a desire always comes with the fear that the larger a band gets the worse they might become. Not that popularity means a loss in quality - the Arcade Fire can fill out the MEN arena so the ‘big=bad' equation just don't hold. But then the fucking Kooks exist and get to number 2 in the album charts so there's an inherent tension to any discussion of good music and popularity.

Anyroadup, the Trains were on fine form again. New single ‘We go hunting' was suitably sinister and disturbing, ‘Spencer Perceval' was as cacophonously affecting as ever and a new song (seemingly about sea-level change from what I could gather from lyrics and visuals) bodes enormously well for the future. Plus, amongst the stories of madness, death, deception and despair the band manage to remain strangely cheery in their banter with the lucky few gathered.

They've also just released a DVD version of ‘Elegies to Lessons Learnt' (teaser here). Taking the form of an animated film, the central character is dragged through history (via some sort of time travelling telegraph pole) and dropped into the various stories the songs explore. Having watched the trailers before purchase, I was concerned that the film might have the look and feel of an A-level visual art project. Yet whilst we're not talking top-end CGI here the film only adds to the experience of the album. The closers of ‘Epiphany' and ‘Death is the End' contain some genuinely moving and unsettling visual moments. You'll see what I mean when you buy it here and their music here.

Listen to these and fuck the fucking Kooks

Tranquiliza escuchar No Military Parade.

iLIKETRAINS – Elegies To Lessons Learnt (Beggar’s Banquet, 2007)

I’ve been putting this one off for a while (it was actually the third of my Avalanche purchases) but not because I don’t like the record (I do) but because I’m not quite sure quite how to convey that.

Overall iLIKETRAINS’s approach is quite highly stylised – lyrical vignettes, which in truth are pretty vague but are intended to be about historical incidents. The lyrics are delivered in a mannered fashion over music which presumably is regarded (by people who know better than I do) as post-rock. And it’s the music that draws me in – at their best iLT make a glorious noise and are quite epic at times (see the 9 minute plus ‘Spencer Perceval’ for proof) but with passages of real beauty as well – LP closer ‘Death Is The End’ in particular is just … haunting.

The vocals themselves are more of an acquired taste. The weird thing is that, given the subject matter of the songs, their almost cadaverous delivery lends them an air of historical accuracy as if the singer was actually present at the events in question. I know that sounds ridiculous but it is a surprisingly effective technique.

Despite rarely revving up above midtempo ‘Elegies’ is a really good LP but I rather suspect that if you’ve heard them before, my recommendation isn’t going to change anyone’s minds. However if you haven’t heard them before give the following track a chance:

As ever, if you like the song, please support the artist by buying the album and going to see them live.

The perfect setting to the end of Freshers Week. iLiKETRAiNS release their debut album ‘Elegi

The perfect setting to the end of Freshers Week. iLiKETRAiNS release their debut album 'Elegies to Lessons Learnt' on Monday. This follows their critically acclaimed 2006 EP 'Progress - Reform'. I've never seen the Charlotte so derelict, it was really strange.

Support band Her Name is Calla are a Leicester band, and one of the most interesting I've seen. Their opening track sounded like a swarm of bats descending down upon you (literally - on track 'Condor and the River' the trombone player starts playing harmonica and then it becomes more distorted as he screams down a microphone) It's hardly hardcore music though, more like slowcore. They have a similar sound to that of iLiKETRAiNS, although a lot more melodic. There have been reviews that iLiKETRAiNS are like Sigur Ros if they gave History lessons, and lyrically it's pretty dry and dark stuff - the new songs reference the bubonic plague, which is on par with Fresher's Flu to be honest. I guess the one good thing about finishing uni is that you'll never have the annual illness again. Rejoice!

I'm unsure about iLiKETRAiNS. Live they are pretty interesting, but every song I've heard by them has the same formula; starts off slow and builds up into some kind of dark monotone opus. It is rewarding if you give it time, and in the mood. It's not remotely cheerful. Which is why I found "Progress/Reform" a bit painful to sit through. Live though; it's a different experience.

Here is an iLiKETRAiNS song called 'The Deception', taken from 'Elegies to Lessons Learnt'.

"Are there any freshers here? Are there any history freshers here? Well consider this your first lecture"

Well, after this gig I want to be part of the University of iLiKETRAiNS. In fact, sleepless nights would be avoided if I could only go some way to inspiring, moving and enchanting students like t'trains do tonight.

iLiKETRAiNS look great. They manage to be hirsute and sartorially elegant at the same time: white shirts, black ties and armbands, and a nice range of facial hair. The projections draw you in - each song is given a geographical location and images that accord with the story recounted. One such lesson - concerning the plague in Eyam in Derbyshire -was utterly moving (Lou's parents live nearby). Yet even if the events and historical figures remain obscure the stories move and inspire.

And then there's the sound. The term post-rock is used as a shorthand for some great innovations, but also as a way to smuggle j*zz into my world. There's also a lot of disappointments encompassed by this term. But t'trains truly produce soaring walls of minor chord infused noise (no, not sonic cathedrals). Throughout the night you get the feeling that you've heard this one before, but it really, really, doesn't matter as you get enveloped by their sound. This lot are truly very good indeed and may well be appearing in this here blog a lot in the future (the new album is out 1st October - buy it here)

Two songs from their brilliant short album, Progress Reform.

iLiKETRAiNS, Elegies To Lessons Learnt (2007)
