<p>Once more we cast our gaze at the cutting edge, a place where social media and broadcast blur together against the fractal landscape of evolving technology. As <a href="http://www.facebook.com" target="_blank">Facebook</a> and <a href="http://www.twitter.com" target="_blank">Twitter</a> become the words on everyone's lips, change is hard to ignore.  "Social," and "user generated content" have become the catchphrases often used by those trying to get a handle on the newly evolving business model.</p>
<p>Case in point: <a href="http://www.radarcultura.com.br/" target="_blank">Radar Cultura</a>, a small community station in the South end of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Using the tools of today's socially driven Internet, they have enacted a collaborative model for station operations based on their use of Drupal, an open source content management system (CMS) known for its versatility and interactivity.</p>
<p>Via <em><a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7657150.stm" target="_blank">BBC News- Digital Planet</a></em>:</p>
<blockquote><p>"Any other radio station who wants to use the same system behind Radar Cultura, is able to download the software from Drupal's website," [creator Andre Avorio] added.</p>
<p>Much of the information published on the site is also released under the Creative Commons license so anyone can take and use it freely.</p>
<p>"The idea is to create collaborative radio and the audience is invited to produce everything," said Leah Ranja, the station's internet producer.</p></blockquote>
<p>How interesting to find this so soon on the heels of my post about Creative Commons in radio. Not quite what I was speaking of, but still a vibrant and functional use of the CC system. It looks like Mr. Avorio deserves props for both innovation and implementation.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0 0 10pt;"><span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Calibri;">Webinars are unlike standard PowerPoint presentations because they have a greater focus on interaction and discussion, and slides are encompassed with the webinar tools, making the screen more complex and wordy slides are ineffective.<span>  </span>The presenter’s purpose will be undermined if slides reveal everything they have to say.<span>  </span>Having too much information on slides may also inhibit free discussion to an extent because participants’ ideas can become too shaped around the content and less innovative or varied.<span>  </span>Many of our slide revisions were around taking slides containing excessive information and turning them into activities so participants reached the same outcomes but were more involved and engaged with the presenter and other participants.<span>  </span>Other revisions were around using images or key words to convey ideas, with presenters aided by slide notes with more detailed information.<span>  </span>In other cases relating to application changes, we opted to share the application and talk with participants to define the depth of what was to be covered.</span></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0 0 10pt;"><span lang="EN-US"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Calibri;"><strong>Tip: Keep words on slides to a minimum.<span>  </span>If a slide contains a lot of information, ask yourself “how can we do this differently?” to create interesting and engaging content.</strong></span></span></span></p>

You can never get the accurate numbers not even regarding the reach of a particular media vehicle. Good news is that Marketing is now going wireless. Telecommunication is one of the largest growing sector of the economy of Pakistan and this is one area we can excel the most. According to PTA there are over 90 million mobile users in Pakistan. In last 4-5 years, cell phones have become an important part of the lives of the people of this country. Globally, Brands and Marketers are moving towards personalization of content and are into this revolutionary wireless medium. Now they are trying to take the brand message to the hands of the consumers.</p>
<p>Let’s see how companies all over the world are using this medium:<br />
A two month mobile interactive ad campaign in Italy has resulted in a 9% increase in sales for Dunkin Donuts. As a result of an SMS-based marketing campaign, customers were able to get coupons for Dunkin Donuts goods by using their mobile handsets to respond to advertisements displayed on store notice boards, billboards and on the radio.</p>
<p>By sending a short message to the published numbers, users receive an immediate reply featuring a free gift coupon or special offer exchangeable at local outlets.</p>
<p>Trouble TV, a UK teen channel is using an SMS-based relationship marketing campaign. The campaign encourages viewers of Trouble TV and visitors to its web site (www.trouble.co.uk) to send in by text message, a promotional code that appears on screen every hour between 12pm and 5pm for a two-week period. Participants are entered into a daily draw, with prizes including mobile phones.</p>
<p>Petrol price monitoring group FuelWatch advertised an SMS competition to win $250 of free fuel on the back of delivery trucks. In 3 weeks 500 entries were received from just 10 trucks operating in Brisbane. In addition to the creation of a database, which can be used for further marketing, by asking respondents to enter a letter corresponding to the trucks regular route, the best routes could then be determined for future campaigns. Heightened awareness of the FuelWatch brand was also created as well as its website URL.</p>
<p>Nestle ran a "Grab. Gulp. Win!" promotion for Nesquik. Entry details were placed on 40 million bottles of ready-to-drink flavoured milk and milkshakes in the US, offering text-in giveaways ranging from a gaming house party to music downloads.</p>
<p>Lot more and unique mobile marketing ideas can be executed in Pakistan in fact some brands are already doing through Mobilius.com, the largest mobile marketing solution providers in Pakistan and I hope that our marketers start thinking about it before it gets all “houseful”.</p>

<p>The most recent article supports this. It helps place the proper focus on how to layer when developing online content and experiences. Most invigorating is that this is the first in an upcoming series. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<div><span style="color:#0000ee;"><span style="color:#000000;">The next best thing in internet <a class="zem_slink" title="Advertising" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advertising">advertising</a> is already here with widgets. Widgets, also known as gadgets, are embeddable chunks of code  that can be implemented into any HTML coded site without any need for compiling from the end user. This means a lot of potential for creating intelligent, clever, and interactive widgets that could prove useful for many companies. </span></span></div>
<div><span style="color:#0000ee;"><span style="color:#000000;">When you buy space for an ad on another website, you</span><span style="text-decoration:underline;color:#000000;"> are paying for prime real estate, depending how valuable that website is. Now as to how you want to develop that space is up to you. Many companies take the tired and ineffective approach of filling up those valuable spaces with <a class="zem_slink" title="Web banner" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_banner">banner ads</a>. </span></span></div>

<p>These ads are barely to completely <a class="zem_slink" title="Interactivity" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interactivity">non-interactive</a> and the only people I can think of who would detract themselves from viewing their favorite site to click on banner ads are people with short attention spans.</p>

<div>Now I am not saying widgets are any better than banner ads, at least for the moment. Instead of capitalizing on this new technology to develop available ad space into something truly innovative and interactive, many companies have made gimmicky and half-baked attempts at interactivity. These include little, gimmicky games with monkeys and shooting inanimate objects, trivia puzzles, or some other meaningless and irrelevant distraction. Don´t get me wrong, I like to play these silly games from time to time, my favorite being a simplistic batting simulation on a baseball site or a full game of golf, but I never really spend time on the website I am redirected to.</p>
<p>I  am just telling it like it is and just giving personal and professional opinion on how widgets can outperform traditional advertising. For example, why not use the ad space you bought and turn it into an extension of your  website? Someone is basically letting you put your products, information, and content on their own site, like a little colony. Let´s maximize that colony to it´s full productive potential. A better way to explain this is, it´s not very intriguing for users to see a static billboard on a site and even less intriguing for them to click  it and be redirected to another site. And no, the advent of browser tabs will not save traditional banner ads. My idea for <a class="zem_slink" title="Web widget" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_widget">widget</a> ads would be to not even make them ads.</p>
<p>You could put your website in miniature form and put it on another site. The end user can then look around in your site, personalize and customize orders, and purchase what they want to right from that little widget ad.</p>
<p><strong>Doesn´t that sound  a million times better than static banner ads option who nobody really pays attention to and click throught is only "by mistake"?</strong></div>

<p><strong><em>Elmo:</em></strong> And we are at it again. Tonight will be the third presidential TV debate. After the vice-presidential debate last Thursday we are back with the <em>Democrats Barack Obama</em> against the <em>GOP's John McCain</em>. What's special about tonight's debate is the format. It won't be a traditional debate as we have seen in the last two but a format called <em>Townhall-Meeting</em>. The audition and the viewers can ask the candidates questions, this means there will be some kind of interactivity.<br />
<em>Barack Obama</em> is a slight favorite due to his outstanding rhetoric repertoire but as I heard <em>Senator McCain</em> is really good at this style of debate.<br />
Place of happening will be Nashville, Tennessee. The host is NBC's <em>Tom Brokaw</em> and tip off will be 3:00 P.M.</p>

<p>THE thought of a virtual community may cause some people to think of geeky nerds sitting all alone playing computer games, like <a href="http://http://secondlife.com/" target="_blank">Second Life</a> (which is just one form of a virtual community). But this geek is probably interacting with more people than you do on a night out on the town.</div>
<p>The truth is... if you email other people, you are also part of an online or virtual community.</p>
<p>Email is one way that people use social networks to keep in contact with others they know in 'real life' and they use online services as a platform to communicate with them.</p>
<p>The thing that makes people confused about virtual communities, is the word "community" which they associate with geographically bound groups of people. Virtual communities, on the other hand, view community as a form of social networks. These are usually formed around areas of interest and give people a sense of social identity.</p>

<p><strong>Supportive socialites</strong></p>
<p>Many internet users are active consumers of online communities. They are groups of like-minded people who interact with each other using the internet. These can be social networking sites such as <a href="http://http://www.facebook.com/" target="_blank">Facebook</a> and Myspace. These communities can be online dating sites, chatrooms, gaming sites (like SecondLife ) and can even be support groups.</p>
<p>Dystopians think that these virtual communities cause people to lose contact with their local reality, lead to alienation and believe interaction with the 'outside world' diminishes. They view these activities as individualistic, however there is a great deal of interactivity. Users are able to chat to others all over the world and form new communities with shared interests.</p>
<p>Virtual communities offer users many-to-many information exchange, as well as social support.</p>
<p>"The fact that people are not interacting in visible public spaces does not mean that they are in isolation. They may be going online to create new online worlds, using instant messaging to chat with old and new friends, visiting online communities, or playing multi-user games."</p>

<p><strong>Pet lovers Anonymous, Anyone?</strong></p>
<p>I am an avid Facebook user and get withdrawal from going more than a day without checking the site. But I recently discovered a new form of virtual communities- the online support group.</p>
<p>Support groups are as varied as there are different types of people in the world. There are support groups for elderly people such as <a href="http://www.seniornet.org/" target="_blank">SeniorNet</a>, as well as cancer patient support groups, all of which have the intention of bringing people together and providing them with support.</p>
<p>My cat of 13 years died recently of renal failure and I was shocked by how hard his death hit me. Whenever I talked to friends, they were supportive, but they didn't really know what I had been through. I landed up turning to a <a href="http://http://www.felinecrf.org/" target="_blank">support group</a> on the internet, and found that there were people who genuinely empathised and understood my sense of loss.</p>
<p>Before this I had always thought that people should talk to friends and family for help or support, but having a virtual community that understands your exact shared concerns and interests, is very liberating and incredibly helpful.</p>
<p>Although a <a href="http://http://www.felinecrf.org/" target="_blank">'cat renal failure support group'</a> may seem humourous to some, I found the support and understanding I needed, from people I had never met, half across the world.</p>
<p><strong>Feel the love</strong></p>

You quickly read through the news and close your favorite news website until tomorrow when it will be again ready to deliver you the information that are tailored just to your taste.<br />

<p>Rather futuristic view, but a very close situation is not too far from happening.</p>
<p>I am not talking about Google, or a <a href="http://mediarocks.wordpress.com/2008/09/16/7/">device you should carry around with you.</a> I am talking about The Krakatoa Chronicles. I just recently read <a href="ftp://ftp.cc.gatech.edu/pub/gvu/tr/1995/95-25.pdf">an article</a> about this online newspapers, which achieves high level of personalization. As a matter of fact The Krakatoa Chronicle is</p>

<p>In simple words, as this graph from that article shows, you are creator of the content. Isn't this what we always wanted? No unnecessary information and no agenda setting.</p>
<p>To me it is a  tempting trap. The readers need a journalist to give them not only what they want but also NEED to know. Otherwise, we will be lost in this universe of information and news that we are bombarded with every day. Not to mention that it is not healthy to be locked in our own world and interests.</p>
<p>I was unsuccessfully trying to find out whether any newspapers or online news service uses this model, and my conclusion (please correct me if i am wrong) is that the Krakatoa Chronicles is currently just an experiment. All credits to the authors, but I wish this experiment doesn't become part of new media and journalism.</p>

<p>The research belongs to the studies about the message and it is linked to the researches carried out at the Faculty of Communication at the University of La Habana, especially those regarding the “cyberjournalistic” genres area faced with the impact of information and communication technologies. Moreover, it approaches the multimedia report as a genre of current digital journalism, based on the analysis of the formal and content features of the traditional report and its possible modifications to fit the features of the communication on the net, that  distinguish journalism for and by means of Internet, namely “hypertextuality”, “multimediality”, interactivity.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Jensen takes us in an exploratory journey to once and for all define interactivity.  With some not-so-subtle reservations about the concept, he surveys how the major disciplines concerned with interactivity have defined the concept and applied it to their own research. He maintains that the term interactivity has been borrowed from a straight forward sociological concept to denote significantly different enterprises in an array of disciplines. Each taking a slight variation of what they like, and what they understand, to build an abstraction of their own. This new abstraction may be useful and consequential in their studies, but has reduced the original concept of interactivity to a generalized undefinable idea. He quotes Sheizaf Rafaeli to illustrate this point,  "Interactivity is a widely used term with an intuitive appeal, bit it is an underdefined concept. As a way of thinking about communication, it has high face validity, but only narrowly based explication, little consensus on meaning, and only recently emerging empirical verification of actual role." The purpose of this article, then is to find a consensus, a kernel of meaning, in this wildly misused and poorly understood notion of interactive communication and interactivity.<!--more--><br />
He starts by setting a model for communication that is simple and generally agreed upon, and divides communication into four categories involving information providers, and information consumers. According to who is in control of the information distribution and production the categories are: transmission, like radio and TV;  consultation, as in FTP, or an encyclopedia; registration, as in government surveillance (wink), and logging software; and conversation, like e-mail and instant messenger. Soon we discover that this model is quite inappropriate for discussing interactivity, as it would reduce interactive communication to conversation. Jensen wishes to arrive to a consensus in defining interactivity, not excluding everyone who doesn't fit a rigid model.<br />
Jensen decides that investigating the concept in the three major disciplines involved to 'trace' the evolution and use of the term is the way to find what we really mean by it. He starts with sociology, which offers a simple and sensible understanding of interaction; "a relationship between two or more people who in a given situation, mutually adapt their behaviour and actions to each other.<br />
He continues with communication and media studies, in what apparently is the most disagreeable or counterintuitive model. They hold that interaction occurs between a person and a book, for example, when the meaning of the book changes as the reader analyses it, and the reader is then affected by this new meaning. The book, in this case exists as a negotiation between the reader's interpretation, and the author's intention. Short of mocking communication studies, as in Soviet Russia, where the book reads you, Jensen is quickly to disregard this relationship for its lack of observable reciprocity. He then overviews other trends in communication studies, which take into account the direct and indirect interaction between audiences of a TV show, or a theatre piece. There are a few models in here, but they all levitate around this idea of a inter-audience communication and reciprocity, some better than others.<br />
The third discipline is informatics, where interaction is characterized as the relationship between a person and a machine. He makes a point of differentiating between interaction between people that is mediated by a machine, and interaction that is directly performed with a machine. This occurs, where a computer, for example, through some sort of process reacts at the user's request, and changes its further operation. The user, in a similar way, adjusts his own behaviour as a consequence of the information provided by the computer.<br />
We see that there are conventionally four ways in which we can think of interaction: person to person, person to message, audience to audience and person to machine. Of course, the disregard of the initial cultural studies concept of interaction between person and message, make it really difficult to accept an interaction between person and machine. Unless we want to disregard interaction as the simple chore of pushing the right buttons to access the information that we need. We would then accept that the machine is just a facilitating tool to arrive at this information which is too difficult, or too time consuming to sort out manually.<br />
How can we define interactivity then, so as not to exclude interactive communication between a person and a machine, or a person and a message. We have noted that they are established forms of interaction, and we cannot, nor we want to, disregard them lightly. Jensen argues that defining interactivity through prototypes, or examples is likely to give us a definition that is prone to obsolescence, and it does not provide us with guidelines for the future. We would be waiting for an unknown authority to classify an activity as interactive without having pointers to its reasoning. A definition through criteria, on the other hand, will give us an exact definition, but a very categorical one. It will necessarily exclude some kinds of communication, and to avoid being obsolete, it will be very vague.<br />
Jensen provides, however an array of models for defining interactivity as a continuum. He enjoys the versatility of finding the appropriate dimensions in which to track interactivity. Not only can we arrive to a more comprehensive understanding of interactivity, but we can judge how it is being put to practice. We can evaluate forms of communication that are already considered interactive, as well as ones that are not.<br />
Jensen presents various models of one, two, three, and even more dimensions to evaluate interactivity. Perhaps the most notable are E.M. Rogers' one dimensional scale, J. Steuer's two dimensional classification, and Brenda Laurel's 3-dimensional Continuum. Roger's scale tracks high and low interactivity in each side of the scale, posting some examples in the middle. This model is very subjective and does not provide many indicators for its use. Steuer's model is more complex, it places interactivity and vividness in two axis. Laure's model is probably the most complex of this three, but arguably the most useful, still being coherent and comprehensible. It plots Range, the degree to which one can make changes; Frequency, the incidence at which we can make the changes, and Significance, the degree of our ability to affect the final outcome. This three models and others outlined, present us with the possibility of guiding our assessment of the technology, and exploring interactivity itself.<br />
Based on this survey of models for tracing interactivity, Jensen makes a distinction between the faculty to changing the message, and the faculty to change the method of communication. "Interactivity may be defined as: a measure of a media's potential ability to let the user exert an influence on the content and/or form of the mediated communication." Likewise, he reconciles the original communication model with interactivity in different levels, by adding his two measures of interactivity to the model. Jensens' model, the Cube of interactivity, organizes interactivity in Transmissional interactivity, Consultational interactivity, Conversational interactivity and Registrational interactivity.<br />
With  determination , Jensen investigated interactivity, its evolution, and to arrived to what he calls, a "contemporary attempt at synthesizing a conceptual construction". He may not come to the definite elucidation on interactivity, but provides an extremely simple, and comprehensible guide to its complexity.</p>

Coming from tonight's Creative Showcase presentation I took home a good dose of moderation-mantra: Stop the Pre! Do the Post! Move your online campaigning from pre- to post-moderation. Amnesia's <a title="Iain's honest bio" href="http://www.creativeshowcase.net.au/en/1/thejudges.mxs?judge=17">Iain McDonald</a> presented <a title="Secret Party award documementation" href="http://extranet.amnesia.com.au/awards/secretparty/">Smirnoff Experience's Secret Party</a> campaign which proves the value of guiding rather than controlling a campaign from within a social network (in this instance a <a title="fb group link" href="http://www.new.facebook.com/inbox/#/group.php?sid=d405d0b2afbb9efd5d9f13fda4bef5e5&#38;refurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.new.facebook.com%2Fs.php%3Fref%3Dsearch%26init%3Dq%26q%3Dsecret%2Bparty%2Bsmirnoff%26sid%3Dd405d0b2afbb9efd5d9f13fda4bef5e5&#38;gid=15652441421">facebook group</a>).</p>

<p>Potential party goers went into the group with an expectation of instant interactivity, free commenting and constant replies, and were served accordingly by the brand and their peers. GPS gaming, videos and social interactions were all tightly interwoven. All the while, users were behaving responsibly, and dealing with eachother in appropriate ways. Successful ticket hunters were proudly showing off their trophies and one example of self moderation included the online crowd petitioning ebay to take down (unfair?) party ticket auctions.</p>

<p>To me the evidence is clear that offering a social group interesting stuff always needs a post moderation approach (of comments, posts, interactions) to be successful. It is something we have approached similarly on Toohey's <a title="Toohey's campaign site" href="http://www.fortheloveofbeer.com.au/#/createIdea/">For The Love Of Beer </a>campaign.</p>

<p>I reckon it is something that instinctively everyone (even a lawyer) knows: write something, see your own post, respond to banter, pass it on... all of this relies on instant gratification to be rewarding and keep momentum. Users see it happen and work beautifully on most of the web, on a daily basis and especially in social networks. So they don't tolerate legal bottlenecks and content wormholes. Who would seriously and continuously bother if every contribution goes into moderation first?</p>

Things are slowly changing over the last few years with the sophistication of AJAX, CSS, Javascript, etc. Many multimedia and interactive content no longer relies on Flash or the more recently developed SilverLight.</p>
<p>HTML5 is a good example of the big step towards interactive, powerful web content. The idea HTML5 presents is web as a full platform for everything an user do on the computer, creating rich, flexible, and fully interactive media. This drastic shift in the very essence of web paves way for web designers today to develop and create change in more ways than ever before.</p>

<title><![CDATA[NAB: It is an opportunity]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Last night I was judging on the latest round of <a title="CS site" href="http://www.creativeshowcase.net.au/">Creative Showcase</a> submissions. Since on this particular night I suspect there were mostly judges on the sites, I cannot help but thinking that UGC always brings out the best in us. Please note the cloud at the right top.</p>

<p>I really like the concept (go to the <a title="NAB community" href="http://oms.nab.com.au/opportunity/">"NAB community" website </a>here), and I am sure NAB can chuckle about this (right?), and I am wondering what other ways (image recognition, manual screening, user flagging, NASA tools) one could use to automate the decency/brand fit of what goes on. Any ideas?</p>
