This is our first time to go karaoke-ing (thus our first time at RedBox) and our first time to go and inspect TriNoma and see for ourselves what the hype is all about. Needless to say, both experiences did not disappoint.

First: TriNoma.

Filipinos love going to the malls. We enjoy it even more when the mall is big, beautiful, and exudes luxury and fine detail. We like our malls to resemble huge hotel lobbies where space is aplenty, where nature seem to dwell so comfortably alongside our favorite boutiques and bars, where the experience would liken a walk into a Zen inspired garden, where we would feel like rich-kids by just merely walking along and looking around the shops. We love to entertain illusions of self-grandeur and the malls become the easiest way to achieve that even for a few fleeting hours.

Such is the new TriNoma Mall. One of the grandest malls in the Metro today.

We arrived late at TriNoma so we went directly to RedBox and didnt get the chance to actually dissect the mall via what looks like a heavy end-to-end walking. But, based on what i have seen when we were trotting the direction towards RedBox, the hype created is not just for the sake of marketing. TriNoma lives up to it. And it does so with an irresistible charm.

(Allow me to say that what really impressed me (as Jun pointed out), was that even though you're at the top most level, you feel like you're still on the ground with all the trees and garden like setting around you. Now that is worth a commendation!)

Second: RedBox

As i mentioned earlier, this is the first time i went to a karaoke bar. I like singing, don't get me wrong, but somehow going to a karaoke bar seemed a bit over the top for me until i get to experience RedBox and appreciated how a wonderful karaoke system can actually enhance the experience of singing.

We decided to go Tuesday night because it's Lady's Night every Tuesdays for the whole month of July (i believe) and my girl friends need not pay the P399 entrance fee.

The facade of RedBox TriNoma is clean and unassuming. Its rooms can accommodate up to around 15 persons and is equipped with a nicely organized digital sound and karaoke system. The songs are organized based on artists, genre, opm or foreign, recent hits; they even have chinese and japanese songs (i think) - i guess to cater to our equally karaoke loving fellow asians (Alfred sports a BIG grin).

I didnt focus my attention on the food though, we ordered the RedBox platter so i suppose its ordinary, as you dont go to RedBox to eat! You go there to sing! And sing and sing i did! Full of heart ; until my diaphragm became tired and the voice which i had six songs earlier suddenly became constipated (hahahaha).

På den tredje dagen tok farmor oss med på en gåtur rundt området så vi skulle bli litt bedre kjent. Temparaturen lå på alt fra 30 grader oppover til 45 grader når vi var der så det var rimelig varmt...

Så var fredagen kommet og jeg og farmor dro på baren Allioth for å se EM-finalen mellom Spania og Tyskland. Utfallet av kampen vet alle og det ble liv i Spania! Etterpå sang vi karaoke til langt på natt...

Karaoke ble det også en dag til mens vi var der og på den siste fredagen før vi skulle reise igjen, dro alle ut til denne baren og hadde det morsomt. Jeg ble kjent med masse trivelige mennesker og jeg fikk også snakket og praktisert litt spansk mens jeg var der:) Turen kan sies å være en great all-around-experience og jeg tror alle trivdes. Jeg kunne skrevet mye mer, men det skjedde rett og slett så mye at jeg ikke orker å ta med alt:P

oh yes, talking about school.. DC lecture today was hell. the RMIT lecturer seems to be singing a lullaby with his cartoon-news-reporter-ly voice. and with the speed of his speech and his mumbling-to-himself jokes, i couldn't help dozing off like every 5 minutes or so. was whining to daddy how much i hate school just now and i gained a knock on my head. *pouts*

anyways, about half of the OG (including me, of course) went for a ktv session after BB class yesterday. there were around 13 of us so the pathetic 4 hours wasn't really enough to enjoy. the service was bad wasn't very good and it was kinda pricey. but well, it's an occasional spending so.. not too bad. (:

initially planned to go partyworld but we ended up heading to kbox at Marina Square thinking it'd be more worth our monies. oh well, let's compensate the losses with the additional drinks and an hour more of enjoyment, shall we?

a very crude mannequin we came across on our way to dinner. i swear the finger was not "arranged" by us but yup, we were the ones who raised the hand up. *giggles* i doubt the shop owner knows what we were laughing about outside her shop and even taking a photo with zhiwen in it. but well, i'm pretty sure though, that she will, by the end of the day because we left him in THAT position. hahaha..

took a group photo before we headed off to esplanade for some chilling session. went to the rooftop and found a comfy area for us to gather in a circle. but it was not long before we got "chased" away by a disgusting cockroach which mystically appeared right on top of charles's cheek. it was really OMG but i shall not reveal who were first few to run away from that undesired area.. HAHA.

anyways! after saying this for God-knows-how-many-zillion-times, it's really time to get started on my assignments. not tonight of course, but hopefully tomorrow and over the weekends. keeping my fingers crossed though. somehow, it seems like there're many other things for me to be fretting over as well. i need more time to sleep, less time for headaches..

I have long suspected that "cougars" are having the best year ever. It's self evident- Desperate Housewives is still a hit show, Kim Cattrall is still getting acting work, and I received a very special birthday card wishing a "happy birthday to a very special cougar". While I am not a cougar by the standard definition (or any other definition), I use this card as further proof that cougars are more en vogue this year than rehab. And rehab has had one helluva year.

My birthday itself was very enjoyable, a special thanks to all those who wished me well. My first spirit journey formation anniversary here in NYC, and it was brought in with some new friends at a new bar. Just a few blocks from my current apartment is a lovely little place called Wicked Willy's, which is normally populated by 9 to 5 preppy douchebags who like to play beerpong and pretend it's 2002 and they're still in college. However, one any given weeknight Willy's also hosts karaoke, which means my birthday was spent drunkenly soliciting dedications. I even indulged by celebrating myself with a rousing rendition of "You've Lost that Lovin Feelin", because you can't beat the Righteous Brothers when drunk. The night quickly escalted into my fifth (yes, 5!) blackout in less than 7 days. Birthday was great, but having a birthday on the same week as the 4th of July is rough on the body.

Blackout aside, I can recall enough foggy details to truly recognize the enjoyable party that The Mess threw for me, and most of my fellows showed up to wish me well, which was awesome. The night took an unexpected turn when our friend, Times Square, won a Broadway karaoke contest (think "Hakuna Matada" with a conga line of drunken strangers) and was rewarded with a 50 dollar bar tab that had to be spent that night. At 1:30 in the morning.

I spent the next day napping instead of eating lunch, and forcing down only a banana for the daily meal. Large billion dollar television networks frown upon visible hangover. Fortunately I look good in a tie. Unfortunately, there was one physical flaw that my boss couldn't help but notice.

My eyebrow is shaved.

Not completely, but still, enough that she noticed. In honesty, it has nothing to do with birthday festivities at the bar (or the diner we headed to afterwards). Before the birthday evening began I ran a few errands and popped in for a hair cut at a low end hair-cuttery place. I'm not too picky when it comes to buzzing off a layer of curls. However, this bitch isn't too picky when it comes to buzzing off layers of anything, and nicked half my face and took part of my eyebrow off in the process while attempting to buzz the side of my head. The worst part was when I looked in the mirror and said "Oh, this is awkward... you cut off part of my eyebrow". The woman looked at me intently, as if waiting for a "magic eye" image to appear in my pores, turned me around in the swivel chair, and said "No I didn't."

Now, I'm not always the most observant person, but I'm pretty sure I can tell when my eyebrows are too different lengths. Mainly because I have vision and a mirror. Sparing unnecesary details, calling your stylist a "dumb bitch" will get you kicked out of a hair salon quite quickly, but it may also save my face from unwanted trimming. I want my eyebrow back. Dumb bitch.

However, all of this was far out of my hungover mind when my boss, Jersey Queen (the one who cannot possibly be a drag queen because she lives in the garden state) approached me and said "Hey, Burkeman, you got buzzed last night". I was stunned. Granted, my wrinkled clothes and the fact that I wore glasses to work might signal a hangover, along with showing up half an hour later than usual, but I thought I looked inconspicuous. I scanned myself over quickly to be sure there was no glarring bar stamp on my hand when my boss interjected "I meant your hair cut, but apparently you had a few drinks, too."

It was too late to bother stammering an obvious denial.

Waking up the day after your birthday with half an eyebrow and a visible hangover isn't always the worse. I could be waking up to all of this in a sketchy ass apartment in Brooklyn. I'm actually quite fond of Brooklyn, I just have been to a few too many sketchy ass apartments there- mainly the one I visited directly after my birthday. I was excited by the multi-national roommate line up, but when one "come here to study acting" and another is a professional framer at an art gallery, it became clear that none of us were planning on living in luxury. The apartment was painted pink and purple on the inside, but the room was really quite spacious, I was a fan.... until I shut the door, and the doorknob literally fell off. Half an eyebrow, admittedly hungover in front of the boss at work, and considering paying hundreds of dollars to live in a shady neighborhood, I saw my life slowly swirling to a stop along with that brass doorknob. At least it was sad funny.

I'm still considering taking it. Who needs a doornob when you've got a doorknob sized hole in your door?

Other apartments have been better, which is a good sign thus far. Certain parts of Brooklyn are looking quite nice, I must say. Same with Jersey, Queens, and even WAY uptown parts of Manhattan. I've even begin to weigh the merits of Staten Island, which isn't such a bad place if you don't mind a ferry ride (which includes a daily dose of the Statue of Liberty). I even consulted my boss, who's lived in New York forever, but something about mentioning Staten Island made her oddly blurry eyed and I immediately escaped the awkward situation. I mentioned it to a person who knows our boss well and she played it off by simply saying "Well, you know, she's a bit off sometimes." I said sure, who isn't. She casually replied, "She's having rough family times. You know she's actually a man, right?"

Suddenly the phrase "the doorknob fell off" is extra sad funny. And though I had a birthday, I've just met the most special cougar yet. Anyway....

SIDENOTE - korean beef was the dish's name introduced to me by my fantastic mother.  I've learned to take caution when learning recipes or names of dishes from her.  On one normal day of Christmas (it really was a normal day because my family doesn't really celebrate any form of Christmas anymore besides the mandatory Christmas day church but that's a story for another day) we had a wondefully cooked turkey.  Nice and crispy on the outside and had a nice flavour of chinese cooking and found out my mom had it done from some restaurant.  My best friend was over having dinner and found it to be pretty good.  She asked my mom where she had it cooked and got a reply similar to "from the Chinese."  Since I am one of the few translators of Chato-to-English I knew she meant she had it cooked from a Vietnamese restaurant within a local Superstore called Kim Truong (sp?).  The next year the turkey was converted into ham by "the Germans".  That's a wonderful skill to have.  Similar to alchemy, I guess,  instead turning everything into ham.  Anyway, after an internet search, I found korean beef is the name for the dish but is also known as kalbi/galbi.  Apologies for the sidecourse.  Back to the story.

My time out eating food and drinking soju with my brother and his friends in a Korean restaurant in Toronto was also a big influence.  They introduced me to kampoongi, something something moo-chim, some other good dish and the wonderful world of soju & beer.  The atomsphere was hot and humid as hell (assuming hell has some water left for humidity), the food was nice and spicy and the only thing to relieve yourself from the heat was a cold shot of strictly beer or soju.  When one person drinks everyone's gotta drink but these weren't your let's-see-how-fast-we-can-get-drunk shots.  This was a laid back casual way of tagay-ing the drinks.  This was the atmosphere I wanted to create with my friends at a restaurant near my apartment called Right There!.

Right There! is a Korean restaurant that started off as a Korean museum and teahouse and expanded their delish dish list over time.  Say that 50 times fast!  Located on 472 Stradbrook Ave., this uniquely furnished restaurant is owned by, surprise surprise, a Korean couple.  I think the entrance was the museum portion of the building displaying some statues and teapots and such which were for sale.  This is where we were greeted by one of the owner's who seemed like a nice traditional Korean lady (if I've ever known a traditional Korean lady).  She had a grace that needed to get used to that easily adds to their atmosphere and style.  In the background, your ears will be soothed with music dvds from artists like Josh Groban and Celine Dion.  Personally, I'd rather listen to soothing Korean music and not understand it but everyone's got their preferences.  It'd be a hoot to watch some hardcore drunk Koreans go at it singing their hearts out to My Heart Will Go On.  With dishes appropriately named I Heart Pork BBQ and set menus named Happy Beef, what's not to love?  It makes you just want to hug that carebear sitting on the lacquered tree stump beside you.  Yes, you've read it right.  Their decor makes me envision a nice Korean wood cabin with wooden tables, stumps, I mean chairs, and spoons all heavily protected by clearcoat...well, with the exception of the spoon.  Speaking of spoons, let's head on to the meal.

Their menu selection isn't vast by any means but they offer enough variety for the beginners like me to enjoy.  Unfortunately, they didn't serve any of the dishes I liked in Toronto but as long as they had Korean beef or kalbi then all was well.  One of my buddies, R&E, had been to this place several times and suggested to try the shrimp pancake.  He's a good friend of mine and is one of my go-to guys for asian culture knowledge and is available if any of you ladies reading this are interested! Aaah?  Aaah?  Nudge nudge. Ahem!  They also have a nice selection of Korean sushi although I wasn't interested in sushi at the time.  The Korean lady was very helpful to answer all of our questions although at times we were lost in translation.  After several confusing discussions we came to agree we were having 2 orders of kalbi, 1 order of shrimp pancake, 1 order of yummy spicy chicken, 1 order of Happy Beef, and 1 order of Happy Octopus.  For alcohol we were going for soju and beer.  We found out they were out of beers because of Canada Day.  What?!  Screw birthday plans next year.  I'm hitting this place up next Canada Day!  For today, I guess we'll just be drinking soju and water.

Let's start off with the water.  In some asian restaurants you'll have tap water or sometimes lemon or even cucumber inside the pitcher of water.  The first time I've ever been to Right There! I had cucumber water which was nice and refreshing during the summer months.  This time around they served us some Korean iced tea water.  Mmmm you might think but it was sugarless.  Imagine a Korean form of the ice tea you get from the our friends down below the border in the Dakota states.  Don't get me wrong because it was cold and refreshing although the after taste was something I wasn't expecting.  So bring on the soju!  Now the nice Korean lady had 4 bottles of what I thought were soju laid out on the center table.  I asked what kind of soju they had and she said they only had one type.  Confusing as this is, I just looked back at the 4 bottles and said "Ok, I'll take the soju."  Looking at the menu, they did only list one as soju and the rest were different kinds of wine although I did see one which looked like a chum-churum soju bottle (the one I've had with my brother and his friends in Toronto).  Anyway, soju is a Korean alcoholic beverage that can resemble sake or vodka but soju is much smoother and a tad bit sweeter.  I'm not an alcohol connoisseur, yet haha, but I'd much rather drink soju than sake or vodka straight.  After a few rounds of soju shots we tried the plum wine.  It comes in a similar bottle and contains some actual plums inside.  This was a tamer sweeter drink that the ladies prefered with only 14% alcohol.  When we reached the bottom of the bottle a few of us tried the plum.  Since it was preserved in this soju mix it made me think about a green olive having a plum's child in a home sojubath birth.  If you can follow me with that imagery you pretty much can imagine the taste without having it.  With around $15 a bottle, both can yield around 8 to 10 shots of nice chilled smoothness to compliment the spicy food that's about to come up.

All the dishes started lining up and looked great.  I like especially like the serving plates and dinnerware and stone bowls!!!  Well, we didn't have anything with a stone bowl but I did have it before and will be added to this review near the end.  All of the dishes came with panchan/banchan which are various Korean side dishes.  They come in four different types: kimchee, seaweed, potato, and some white vege (daikon?).  Kimchee is a spicy pickeled cabbage and is one of the most well known Korean items.  I can taste kimchee in some of the dishes I've tried.  Some people loved the potato panchan and although I looooove potatoes it didn't bring anything different to the table for me and all of my previous potato experience.  The loser of the 4 was the white vege one as hardly anyone commented on it.  My favourite was the seaweed.  Some of you might not like it and might even be a little squeemish towards it but I love sushi and seaweed salad so naturally I'm going to like seaweed panchan.  We could only do so much with the side dishes and started on the main entrees.

My least favourite dish was the yummy spicy chicken.  The name really surprised me because it didn't turn out too yummy or spicy for me.  It reminded me of a bland asian chicken stew called yummy spicy chicken.  Alright, it wasn't that bad but I did forget how it tasted like.  Next on the list is the shrimp pancake.  Now I've had buttermilk pancakes and potato pancakes, which are the best thanks to my BFFE for the introduction.  This was more similar to ukoy, a filipino dish where you take shredded papaya, bean sprouts and shrimp and coat it in some sort of cornstarch batter (I think) similar to pancake mix but not and deep fry the hell out of the thing.  Yes, yes, here we go with the deep fried foods again.  The taste was a little different but it was good.  I'm glad we ordered it because it wasn't marinated or covered in sauce like all the other dishes.  It came with some sort of soy sauce and vinegar mix with sesame seeds on the side or something along the lines of that.  I don't think I'll be craving this dish anytime soon though.  The happy beef and the happy octopus were set meals that came with the same sides: rice soup, 8 pieces of Korean sushi, japchae, kimchee pancake and salad.  If you can imagine how a tamed down watery version of congee or lugaw then you've got the rice soup down.  My highlight eating this soup was using the wooden spoon...NEXT!  I don't remember how the salad tasted like but I know it didn't put my tastebuds off and coming from the shrimp pancake, the kimchee pancake was no surprise.  The Korean sushi was nice.  I saw some beef in the pieces I ate but I'd much rather go to a sushi bar to eat sushi.  The only item I am currently craving from this meal set is the japchae.  It might have been so good because of the noodles and boy do I love noodles but I've got to say japchae is gooooood!  Japchae is glass noodles stir fried in sesame oil and mixed with sliced beef and veges.  I think soy sauce, a bit of sugar and some spice are also added.  Great stuff!  Now, the best is yet to come...the korean beef (kalbi)!!!  I've got to let it out and say Korean beef is my favourite form of BBQ.  Nothing else beats it (so far).  The kalbi we had here was very good.  So good that my chompers took everything off the bone.  I MEAN EVERYTHING!  Well, that's how I eat!  If you haven't tried Korean beef and love BBQ go and get it NOW!  I don't think you'll be disappointed.  If I had to come back, I'd be making my own combo called Feeling the Happy Beef Noodles So Soju Good.  In it would be 1 order of japchae, 1 order of kalbi and 1 bottle of soju (an expensive combo I'm sure).  After all was down and out, I wasn't 100% full but was content until I saw the price haha.  While it won't break the bank it is a bit more on the pricier side of asian cuisine.  What would a birthday dinner be without some post meal pictures?  We asked the nice Korean lady if she could take our picture and she gracefully agreed.  "Say kimchee.  Sreeee Twoooo One," she said and snapped a nice picture of us.  Boy does that add to their vibe and also adds something else to my photographing repertoire.  Say kimcheesy!!! Flash!

Bonus Dish Review - The first time I came here I had ordered Bi-Bim Bap.  Sounds like your nephew causing ruckus with that inflatable hammer you got for him at The Red River Ex, I know!  This was a dish the nice Korean lady kept pushing.  It's a great comfort food dish that comes in a hot stone bowl.  This is like a combo in itself as it has rice, veges, beef BBQ, and a freakin' sunny side up egg on top!  If you like crispy rice like I do (ya know, when you cook fried rice and the part that sticks to the pan and gets all nice and crispy) this dish has something extra special for you.  Since the rice is cooked in the stone bowl the part that sticks to the edge is all crispy!!!  Wondaful!  It looks nice when it's served but our server suggests to mix it all together and sort of ruins the whole appearance.  This is a great wholesome meal leaving your stomach content and satisfied that it had the Bi-Bim Bap experience.  One side of caution though.  If you tend to stay away from mushy things then you might not enjoy this dish so much.  It's still great but can be a tad mushy when it's all mixed up.

We went out with our friends. Ran into a college acquaintance from a very long time ago. That was weird. He was the roommate of my girlfriend's boyfriend. He knew first hand about the taxi driver who followed me. (And you thought that only happened in the movies to Jodie Foster.) My Aunt and Uncle showing up at the show was also strange. We went out afterwards and had lots of fun. Drinking with buds is always uplifting. Did I mention the night before we did karaoke? And I want everyone to guess what I sang. Peace + love

Parece ser que se avecinan tiempos de juerga para la  Xbox 360 por que Microsoft ya ha presentado Lips, el cual es un juego tipo karaoke similar al singstar en el que ay que intentar encajar la voz en el momento adecuado, El micrófono del juego incorpora un censor de movimiento y luces y además se dice que el juego permitirá utilizar la  música almacenada en un Zune o un iPod. Interesante lo de poder usar nuestra propia música pero ¿ para que sirve el censor de movimiento ?

The rumored karaoke game from the old Intellisponse leak was finally confirmed at E3 today. Everything said about this game was true. It has a light-up microphone, it's being developed by iNiS, and the big one, ability to create your own library. You can plug in your "music player" (iPods and Zunes work) and the game will make the vocal track softer (and possible put lyrics on the screen). It will be out this Holiday season with music styles from hip-hop to country and rock to pop. I'm assuming it's competition for SingStar, but I wonder how Guitar Hero and Rock Band are going to take it.

Para los que no sabe que es Lips, pues Lips es un juego estilo Karaoke que vera la luz del día también en la consola de Microsoft ya que originalmente solo estaba planeada su salida para el Nintendo DS.

Este juego se unirá con los demás juegos interactivos y musicales que están por salir este año tales como Rock Band y Guitar Hero.

Una de las características de Lips es que incluirá 2 micrófonos inalámbricos los cuales incluirán varios leds que te irán indicando que tienes que hacer, cabe mencionar que estos micrófonos también son sensibles al movimiento.

De acuerdo con los desarrolladores el jugador podrá subir canciones desde Zune o iPod y podrá interpretar estas canciones. Aun no se confirma fecha de salida pero se espera que sea en próximas fechas.

Heute kündigte Microsoft Lips an, ein karaoke Spiel, dass als konkurenz für Sony's Singstar agieren wird.

Speziell an Lips sind die Bewegung sensetiven Mikrofone und die möglichkeit jeden Song den man in seine Bibliothek besitzt in das Spiel zu benutzen, man Schließt einfach sein Zune (oder Ipod) an und schon kann man Song nach singen.

After some speculation that Microsoft would be releasing a new sing game called 'Lips' for their Xbox 360 console later this year, Microsoft has gone ahead and made it official at their E3 press conference this morning.

The game is being developed by iNiS (developers of the game 'Elite Beat Agent'), and will feature a motion-sensing microphone, which I assume means that you'll have to have a bit of a stage presence and actually work the mic instead of just standing there singing into it, but we'll see when more info comes out.

Look for Lips to be available this holiday season (sorry, no word on a price just yet).

I have found one of the best and funnest things to do in SL and that is karaoke. I frequently TP on over to ~O~ Karaoke Lounge in Second Life to listen to some wonderful voices and every now and then (OK quite often) I have my own go at opening my mic up, playing a song and belting it out. Let me tell you, people there are very nice, they always say I sound good :-P I definitely suggest checking it out. I was very shy and nervous at first, but the owner, Canipanic, quickly talked me into it. Now I am a karaoke addict. Lots of fun. Hope to see some new faces there :-)

What I like about this book is that it's got my bestfriend Suzette on the cover.
