On October 7th 2008, Youtube came a long way from "This video has been removed at the request of copyright owner the RIAA because its content was used without permission." to "Download This Song: on Amazong mp3, iTunes".

Straight from Youtube (excerpt from the Youtube blog),

Today, we're taking our first steps to providing YouTube users with this kind of instant gratification, by adding "click-to-buy" links to the watch pages of thousands of YouTube partner videos. Click-to-buy links are non-obtrusive retail links, placed on the watch page beneath the video with the other community features. Just as YouTube users can share, favorite, comment on, and respond to videos quickly and easily, now users can click-to-buy products -- like songs, books, and movies -- related to the content they're watching on the site. We're getting started by embedding iTunes and Amazon.com links on videos from companies like EMI Music, and providing Amazon.com product links to the newly released video game Spore(TM) on videos from Electronic Arts.

Finally, there is more justification for having "a Youtube strategy". This is great for EMI and Electronic Arts, even greater for small-businesses and -content producers.

According to theAppleblog, Youtube gets a cut when someone clicks through to buy at iTunes. That cut is contributed by the record company and not the retailer. EMI must be sure the volumes will make for the cut.

While most will be impulse purchases now, eventually I expect more high involvement products would be bought off Youtube. Here's a list of products & services that'll benefit from Youtube e-commerce just off the top of my mind:

• Books - Author reads excerpts, video documentary of the research, some talking head testimonials - click-to-buy
• Kitchen Appliances - Video demonstrating functions of a game changing coffee machine - click-to-buy
• Technical Products - 2 people show video flowcharts of how an electronic performance support system gets insurance customer support executives up-to-speed in a day instead of 6 months - click-to-buy

Making an interesting and engaging viral video just became a lot tougher. Job prospects for students of VCU Brandcenter's Creative Technology just became a lot better. Google has done it again.

Sitepoint.com, where I first read about the news, made a reference to another interesting product placement company, Evenhere. Evenhere makes tagging products in web video and tv possible so when one finds something of interest, one can either bookmark it or buy it. Evenhere deserves a post of its own (coming soon).

Tell me people (I'm guessing my visitors are mostly Brandcenter folk), does this update mean you're going to spend more time involving Youtube in your brainstorm session?

Hopefully most Sea-Fever readers are familiar with Slocum's story and have read his classic, Sailing Around the World Alone. It's such a great read that Arthur Ransome, the author of the classic Swallows and Amazons series, went so far as to declare, "Boys who do not like this book ought to be drowned at once."  If you haven't read Sailing Around the World Alone yet, you're in luck because you can read it online, download a copy to read anytime or even better get a free audio version through iTunes and let Slocum bring some adventure to your humdrum commute.

I grew up  in Fairhaven, MA which is the place where Slocum rebuilt his vessel the Spray prior to embarking on his history making voyage in 1895 so he's a bit of  hometown hero to me.

The Google Earth project is by Jonathan Ahlbrand who is an educational consultant with a focus on technology and e-learning. Here's his description of the project from the Google Earth Community page:

I have just completed a little project and would welcome some feedback/suggestions for improvement.

I have created a textually enabled map of the voyage of Joshua Slocum the first man to circumnavigate the world single-handed.

This interactive adventure is divided into 8 segments or "legs". This is not just a path to follow, rather, it is an opportunity for the "adventurer" to explore the world through modern eyes from the perspective of Capt. Slocum.

There are over 100 waypoints. Each waypoint has excerpts from Capt. Slocum's book Sailing Alone Around the World.

Follow the voyage of Captain Joshua Slocum on his historic quest to become the first man to circumnavigate the globe alone.

This is a great demonstration of an effective educational mashup. Take a classic story with historical relevance and combine it other free internet resources using open source software/applications and you've got a great teaching/learning tool. The possibilities are limitless.

it basically explains why we need to change our money based economy if we want to live up to our true potentials.

There are one or two points where the movie seems to shift a bit too far into another direction, but in the end I think it all works out well enough. This movie will have its strong critics, they will say that it's just propaganda, but it also will have its fans...

I would call "Zeitgeist: Addendum" an anti-propaganda movie - offering the viewer radically different perspectives than those that we get to see everyday in our world (in the mainstream media, at work, in school, etc.). One quote from the beginning sets the tone of what this is about:

"None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free." (Goethe)

Whether you (politically) agree with some of what is being said or not, I think the decision to (not) watch this movie is a real life red pill/blue pill moment...

On the film making side the editing has to be specially mentioned, its sometimes minimal style (only voice over and an (almost) black screen for more than just a short moment) offers room to form your own images and this is quite powerful... All in all it's a bit like an indie editor's "J.F.K.".

Maybe "Zeitgeist: Addendum" could be a bit shorter and some of the changes might come across as too radical for some viewers... While it's not perfect it attempts to achieve so much and succeeds in so many areas that its shortcomings don't harm the overall experience and effect I think. The movie is very inspiring. Towards the end there is maybe a bit too much of the techno/spiritual theme and maybe there is just a bit too much of believing in technology at times, but all in all there is so much that works so well (and that makes so much sense) that this can be seen as a good starting point for a discussion...

"Zeitgeist: Addendum" is like "The Matrix" but for real - if you are ready to take this cinematic blue pill...

Ik was zelf ook al met dit idee bezig maar het enorme werk wat dit soort sites met zich mee brengt hield me tegen.  Een indexsite voor mashups, wat een geweldig idee en ben absoluut blij dat er iemand mee begonnen is. Ik kwam deze site vandaag op het web tegen en heb geen idee van wie hij is maar dat maakt ook niet zoveel uit. Makkelijk zoeken op genre, mashup artiest of musician. Aan de mashups hangt ook nog een rating systeem zodat je globaal een beeld hebt of het een goede of slechte mashup is. (wat natuurlijk niet altijd zo is.)  Er staan nu 366 mashups online en eens kijken of dit de aankomende tijd gaat groeien. Ik ben erg benieuwd!

Enhancements in this release:

• Made signup 1-step using your Nike+ login.  This removes the need to use the "Share with friend" link from within Nike+.
• Added pulldown menu to set default distance metric (km/mi) on your Twitter settings. This is now used for any runs published.  It's initially set based on your Nike+ user preferences.
• Added the user tweets to the Twiike timeline to drive additional traffic for Twiike users
• Added retrieve your password (which is set to your Nike+ password when you sign up).
• Added ajax progress bars to all functions that require the server to respond so users don't think the site is not doing anything

Please keep it coming with the suggestions.  I received a ton today and would love to know how to keep making it better for users.

But, the most fun of all was remembering that someone I know has been doing animation and posting to Youtube. Doing a search revealed this little gem.

Bands are like buses.

You wait months for a good one to play live then two come along at once.

Add to the perils of internet shopping buying tickets for concerts on the same night. A likely event if you rush on the heads-up start the excellent www.tourfilter.com gives you with it’s early warning announcement service.

Yes, I have tickets for both The Thievery Corporation and Spiritualized. No, I can’t multiverse to both gigs.

But thanks to the joys of technology you can now witness what hearing both groups playing at once would sound like. An aside to any lawyers, if it offends I’ll remove.

PS What’s with venues stating a curfew time, have we all got ASBOs now?

It's SUPER easy to use.  Basically login to your Nike+ account, click 'Share with Friends' in the upper right corner of the run, click 'Send to a friend,' enter 'nikeplus@twiike.com' in the email address field and click the 'Send it' button.  You'll get a welcome mail that will link you to login and enter your Twitter account (or set one up if you don't have one yet) and VOILA!  Twiike will auto post to Twitter every time you sync after a run.

I'd love feedback on what people like and what people think sucks and where it can be improved enhanced.
