Billboard.com is reporting that Nickelback's next studio album will arrive Nov. 18 via Roadrunner, just in time for the holiday retail season. First single "If Today Was Your Last Day" will hit U.S. radio outlets Sept. 30.

The Canadian rock outfit is recording the as-yet-untitled project in Vancouver with producer Mutt Lange, who hasn't worked on a new album since ex-wife's Shania Twain's "Up" in 2003.

The album is the follow-up to 2005's "All the Right Reasons," which has sold an astonishing 6.9 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

In July, Nickelback signed a multi-rights deal with Live Nation, including its recordings once its Roadrunner deal is completed. The band is expected to play Live Nation amphitheaters beginning next year.

Celebrating the best(?) of 90s Cancon sanctioned modern rock.
Want someone to blame for Nickelback

Celebrating the best(?) of 90s Cancon sanctioned modern rock.

Want someone to blame for Nickelback's current dominance of modern rock radio? One of those fingers could be pointed right here I'm sorry to say. See, way back in 1995, Nickelback were just another grunge aping rock band kicking around Vancouver. But someone over at local radio station 99.3 "The Fox" ("The Fox Rocks!") thought that their song "Fly" from demo ep Hesher deserved some radio play. I was 15 at the time, a fan of bands like Silverchair, Bush (Bush X in Canada at the time) and Seven Mary Three. So naturally I thought the song was awesome. Hey, it was the first local band I could champion. Being underage, the first time I saw them was a free in-store at Virgin Records and about 30 people showed up. They continued this trend, playing similar in-stores at Sam the Record Man and Future Shop. My constant appearance at these sparsely populated gigs coupled with the fact rhythm guitarist Ryan Peake used to baby sit my friend Tyler meant Chad Kroeger actually started to recognize me. By the time I saw them play a gig at the rec centre in Port Moody (the only time I ever paid to see them), they were selling VHS cassettes with this music video on it. So yeah, I was an early Nickelback supporter. What's a guy to do?

Oh, back then Ryan Peake also used to sing when the band covered Soul Coughing's "Super Bon Bon."

Talk about detonating on impact. The Illusion of Progress, the new album from Flip/Atlantic recordi

Talk about detonating on impact. The Illusion of Progress, the new album from Flip/Atlantic recording artists Staind, rocketed onto the Billboard 200 this week at #3, making it the fourth consecutive album of the band’s career to debut in the top 3.

News of the album’s explosive arrival follows a flurry of headline-making moves for the multi-platinum band, who recently teamed with online retailer Amazon.com for an innovative pre-release promotion, and have been on a worldwide summer tour, to be followed by a run in Europe with Nickelback in September, and headlining dates with special guests Seether and Papa Roach beginning October 4th at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD. Fans can go to www.staind.com for ticket information.

The Illusion of Progress is being propelled by chart-topping lead single “Believe,” currently #2 at Modern Rock, #5 at Active Rock, and #4 at Mainstream Rock. The song has already begun crossing over to the Hot AC charts with a debut at #34. “Believe” is Staind’s fastest-growing hit since “It’s Been Awhile.”

The Illusion of Progress is Staind’s sixth album and the follow-up to 2005’s certified platinum Chapter V. The album was produced by Johnny K and recorded in Lewis’ home studio with guitarist Mike Mushok , drummer Jon Wysocki, and bassist Johnny April.

There's a town in Florida called Celebration that was designed, built and engineered by the Disney Corporation. It's an ode to the small town of American mythology - where everyone knows everyone elses' names, where little league is the sport of choice, where there's a church on every corner and where 97% of the population are white. In its early years, actors were employed to aide the impression of the the yokel spirit and snow was sprayed on the ground every Christmas whether it was cold or not.

Celebration is, in more ways than are readily recognised, the epitome of American values. It presents the right image, it taps into patriotism and nostalgia and it is effortlessly controlled by a ruthless corporate behemoth that purports to be about family values. If it looks genuine and it sounds genuine then who cares if it actually is genuine?

Ladies and gentleman, welcome to Nickelback country.

Writing about music on WWM is always a tricky proposition as it always flares up far more defensive responses than your average ITV show. However, with Nickelback I feel I'm on safe ground.

To like this band you must be a tone deaf, semi-illiterate fucktard who enjoys the sensation of being aurally patronised and having their values slowly beaten into a bloody pulp by a thousand men in very expensive suits. You must be a masochist whose musical purchasing revolves around the latest 'Now' compilations and 'Hardcore Urban Trance Classics 2009'. By all accounts and all tastes and all allowances for musical snobbery, you must be a moron.

'Photographs' is the band's most recent single - a rerelease following the highly explicable but no less painfully successful ode to money and directionless consumerism 'Rock Star'. It's a contrived amalgamation of supposed memories from lead mullet Chad Kroeger, all perfectly emoting what is an archetypal upbringing for your average middle class 'troubled' teenager who still shops at The Gap - you know, the ideal demographic for this sort of thing.

Like a fake medium hustling a rich and grieving widow, Kroeger channels picture perfect vagaries of screen-door memories in middle America Nowheresville, picking out the schoolgirls who broke his heart and his numerous brushes with the law. He contemplates how he went astray, becoming a reflective and wizened soul who wants a second chance at life - all the while seemingly forgetting that he's actually a former session musician from Canada whose only conviction is for being a drink-driver.

This follows the same line as their previous single 'Rock Star' which is basically a list of rock star cliches - a song particularly interesting as it features a rock star singing from the point of view of an 'everyman' about how he really wants to be rock star. Projected self adulation it may be, but it's also about a rock star clearly becoming annoyed that his rock star life doesn't follow that of what a rock star life should be - so he sings a song about he'd rather have a rock star image than be the actual rock star he is. Are you still with me?

Music is all about image, I'm not denying that, but there's something deeply sinister about the way Nickelback go about it - their lyrics are almost focus-group driven, sculpted from marketable subjects that can inspire the most ferverent puchasing and imbued nostalgia. They drip Americana; etched into every rumpled t-shirt and straggly rat-tail is a sense of rugged machoism and glistening self importance, all topped off by a style that was popular roughly 15 years ago.

Of course, Nickelback aren't the image of the real America, they're the image of the corporate America. They're the image of socially responsible rebellion, of radio friendly rock music and of all-out war-waging pomposity. Yes, there are other bands who use the flag as their image and some are far worse than these pseudo hillbillies, but I don't think there's a band out there who wear it so brazenly - who tread the line between sincerity and self parody so closely.

Listen to the lyrics. It's like they're cribbed from Facebook photo comments to achieve maximum effectiveness - a false history wrapped within a culminated life and sponsored by Disney. They're the Miley Cyrus of rock bands; tightly squeezed by an army of imagemakers who can take their sub-average cliches and present it with so much glitter and sparkle that you hardly notice what's beneath it all.

The talkbacks will begin soon and we'll all wade through the usual music arguments. Let me save us all some time; I know there're far worse bands in the world, I know that commercial rock is nothing new, I know that the music industry has always been about image and I know that even those precious fuck-you rock bands that I grew up on were really powered by Sony.

Nickelback are a new breed of all that, though. They're a genetically spliced super group that combine the twin powers of alt dot origins and massive commercial appeal. Much like GI Joe, they have a copyright logo where the cock and balls should be - and should that sort of behaviour really be encouraged in the first place?

Apple really don’t help themselves. People accuse them of selling shitty overpriced equipment

Apple really don't help themselves. People accuse them of selling shitty overpriced equipment which is only priced higher because of a brand name (and at risk of sounding like a Mac fanboy, they don't - with a few notable exceptions), and they respond by releasing these. Yes, Beats headphones - expensive because they were designed by Dr. Dre! Because when I think precision engineering and audio perfection, I think Dr. Dre. Dr. Dre, who stands to make a small fortune out of selling £280 headphones to gullible pricks.

They even, and this is wonderful, proudly advertise that these headphones come with Monster cable. (Choice quote from article: "Various reviews have reported that listeners and viewers are unable to tell a difference between substantially higher-priced Monster cables and inexpensive cables.") If you really want to make sure that anyone with sense avoids your product on the basis that it's overpriced horseshit, put a Monster cable in it. What you'll have left is the aforementioned gullible pricks, the sort of gurgling pillocks who'll buy a pair of £280 headphones and most likely listen to fucking Nickelback through it and think it's a revolution in sound. (Strictly speaking, Nickelback are indeed a revolution in sound; albeit a Chairman Mao-ish Cultural Revolution in which sound gets the shit kicked out of it and homogenised into superficially shiny, barely listenable shite. My point still stands though.)

I can hear some of these gullible cunts in the back of my mind now (and people have bought them, there are reviews on the Apple store - choice quote: "I would have liked the branding to be more discreet, as I feel on the tube, I could become a muggers wet dream"; you probably are, if you're carrying around expensive headphones you probably have a load of other costly shit on your person too, you bellend). They're telling me that until I've used a pair of Beats, I should shut up because they could be quite good. And I'm telling them that they're wrong. I'm not that rich or stupid, and at any rate if I used them I'd probably turn into a speck of audiophile prickdust just like them. If they were shit, or just the same as any other headphones, these same twats would probably be going around exclaiming how wonderful they are just to try and justify their purchase of some shit twat-muffs for nearly 300 notes. You know, like with Monster cables.

At any rate, after the price of headphones exceeds about £50 then as far as I'm concerned the bar rises far above "good sound quality". For £280, I should be able to listen to the Pussycat Dolls and have them toss me off through the power of sound. For £280, I should be able to listen to Station to Station by David Bowie and have him do a line of coke off my desk. For £280, I should be able to listen to Afroman and get hit in the face by second-hand smoke from the biggest joint in the universe. For £280, I should be able to listen to Stevie Wonder and go blind. None of those things will happen, so I'll stick to my personally recommended earphones, Sennheiser CX300s, which cost about £20 and make pretty much everyone who's used them instantly jealous. Eat that, Dr. Dre, you bald cunt.

Salve galera!

Marcando o início da minha contribuição na coluna musical do Portallos, começo com a minha primeira recomendação de CD. Na minha opinião, é por onde qualquer pessoa deveria começar a ouvir Nickelback:

Silver Side Up

Clique em more para saber um pouco mais.

O CD, lançado em 2001, apresenta riffs bem elaborados e um peso bem equilibrado entre as músicas, atingindo níveis mais elevados em Just For e um pouco mais leves em Good Times Gone. Apenas duas músicas desse álbum se tornaram famosas (Too Bad e How You Remind Me), mas também vale a pena ouvir Where do I Hide e a já mencionada Just For (na minha opinião a melhor do CD).

Segue abaixo algumas das melhores faixas do CD. Ignorem o slideshow de Just For e Where do I Hide , já que as mesmas não possuem videoclipes oficiais...

Nickelback - Just For

Yes, hero can save us; this is hero’s job .Save and helps people or do extraordinary job for people. Hero are born hero or made? In the fictional and mythological heroes are born hero like Hercules that when he born he killed the snakes. But I don’t think real heroes are born heroes. People made heroes because they need heroes. They are looking for a perfect person because they are not perfect. They need a person who is better than them. But this is not only thing. Maybe a person has great ability but against society then it becomes antihero .People with heroes feel happy and comfortable. Every cultures have different heroes. For example war heroes of a country couldn’t be a hero in another country. Another thing is that heroes could deadline like sports heroes that they usually no longer hero when they lost. My culture has a lot of heroes such as Cyrus the great as historical, Rostam as mythological and Takhti as sports heroes.

I love Rock Band. Throughout cyberspace, there are plenty of forums full of flame wars regarding how the game requires no talent, and perhaps serves as a way to reduce the value of actually playing an instrument. Let's not lie to ourselves. Playing a real guitar versus playing 5 buttons and a strummer (with an occasional whammy) is much more difficult, and requires much more practice... Every time I go to a concert, I can only stand in awe and acknowledge the superior skill required to handle chords, hand positions, rhythm, and multiple strings. And don't get me started on drumset. Quite more intimidating than the four-padded set which comes with the game.

In either case, playing Rock Band, is FUN, and I enjoy the game to no end. Every Tuesday, I'll briefly give a run down of the newly released songs, and any pertinent information regarding them. I'll probably enclose a youtube video of the note charts if that interests you.

This week, the Roadrunner pack was released. The six songs/artists are of the Roadrunner label, which specializes in Heavy Metal music. Some notable artists on the Roadrunner label are of course, Slipknot, Cradle of Filth, Poison the Well, Lamb of God, Nickelback, and Megadeth, just to name a few. Check out the list of artists here. Or visit the Official Website Here.

Anywho, the list for this week

Aesthetics of Hate - Machine Head
Clouds over California - Devildriver
Constant Motion - Dream Theatre
My Curse - Killswitch Engage
Runnin' Wild - Airbourne
Sleepwalker - Megadeth

If you remember the GH2 days, Hangar 18 may have been a nemesis of yours, especially on Expert. Guaranteed to spike your heart rate. So is the case with Sleepwalker. It is easily the hardest song created to date, is it is a Tier 9 song for guitar, drums, and vocals (8 for bass... what a break!). Here's a clip of the insanity.

Guitar... the solos are ridiculous

It burns when you touch it, you knew it was hot when you picked it up, and you went straight for it anyway, drawn to it. The pain is sharp at first, then lingering to remind you of the danger. Later, the scar serves as a more permanent symbol, but even that fades over time. You know that it will be hot. You know that it will burn. And you go after it time and time again. Why? Because you hope that it will change. Perhaps a pot on a hot stove will one day not burn your hand.

In my attempt to address what pains me tonight, I must liken it to a fresh burn, initially raw beneath the surface, but over time the new skin will emerge a little bit stronger, masking the scars that lie beneath. Look closely, and it's easy to see that it was there all along, feelings thinly veiled beneath a tough skin, but no match for a smoldering pot.

Who's to say that I'm going to get burned? Who's to say that I'm going to pick up the pot? I'm really close, though.

I had to do breathing exercises before I started this post. There are a lot of bands out there today that I don't like (Dave Matthews, Fall Out Boy, etc) but none of them even come close to rivaling the pure auditory torture that graces my innocent eardrums when a certain band's music (if one could even call them a band, more like a few homeless old cats meowing in tandem) flies through the air and manifests itself on my radio. All it takes is hearing the first chord of one of their horribly thrown-together songs (songs? more like an arrangement of discordance) for me to physically assault the vessel which emits it.

Yes, readers. I am describing Nickelback.

[caption id="" align="alignright" width="144" caption="They need to bathe. "][/caption]

I am of the worthy opinion that they are part of a huge conspiracy to destroy the music industry from the inside out. Well it didn't work for Erasmus so it better fucking not work for Nickelback! I don't understand how people can actually ... like them. All of their songs sound exactly the same, as can be witnessed by this charming website. REALLY? They are like a cult! They get 'em young, they attract young Americans with their filth to ensure that these kids' musical tastes never evolve past whiny 7th grader! IT'S HORRIFYING. Nickelback is like a virus infecting the minds of the weak! They're like the crazy fundamentalists who don't believe in evolution coming to your kindergarden class to BRAINWASH YOU. They're like parents who won't let their young daughters play with dolls so she doesn't develop a poor body image!

NICKELBACK IS EVERYWHERE.

SAVE YOURSELVES.

-Meghan

PS: I just did a facebook search to see which of my friends listed Nickelback under their favorite music, and it is an EMBARASSING AMOUNT. I can't believe this. I may have to defriend them, and we all know how low that hits below the proverbial belt.
