Terminal.

OpenOffice: Writer, Calc, Impress, Base

Gimp.

terminal (apretando alt+f2, escribes terminal y aparece)

Para Openoffice:

Editor de Textos: oowriter

Planilla de cálculos: oocalc

Presentaciones: ooimpress

Base de datos: oobase

Para GIMP, editor de imágenes es:

gimp.

[caption id="attachment_461" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="encontrando configuración teclado"][/caption]

Computers can be great sources of headaches or they can be useful tools in people’s lives. My

Computers can be great sources of headaches or they can be useful tools in people's lives. My profession, my life and calling is wrapped up in the word pastor. My wife and I have been at our current church as pastors for almost five and a half years. To some, that's a long time; others think it's just getting started.

I do a lot of work on my home computers; one is a desktop, and the other is a laptop. Both of them are running Simply Mepis Linux, and are working very well. The desktop has Simply Mepis 7.0 as its main operating system, while the laptop has both Mepis 7.0 and 7.9.80-beta2 running on it at full speed. Honestly, I don't know which one I like better.

Both of my systems are set up to dual-boot, but it is a rare thing for me to ever boot into that other OS - MS Windows. I am so thankful 99.9% of my work can be done in the safe, virus-free, hassle-free Linux environment. This post is not being written to ridicule Windows as that environment is capable of doing that all by itself.

What do I use Linux for in my office? Virtually anything that's needed. I'm not trying to be cute, but it's still the truth. I'll attempt detailing some things I routinely use Linux for in my duties as pastor of a small church.

SERMON PREPARATION:
My office software of choice is OpenOffice.org (OOo), though I only use a couple of its several modules. Sermon preparation is done using Writer, BibleTime and a few internet Bible study sites. It's easy to find the scriptures in need, then copy and paste them into my sermon template. I find Writer is extremely easy to use, and meets all my word processing needs.

Several years ago, I was trying to set up a sermon template, but ran into lots of difficulties because I just didn't know what I was doing. A couple of trips to the OOo forum had me up and running in no time at all. That's a great group of people over there, and were willing to spend lots of time with a newbie; that's a great help for someone who was struggling with a simple task.

The sermon template is structured for ease of use. When I fire it up, I am greeted with a nearly blank page; it only has the date and morning service showing. I type the message title, then arrow down below the date. As soon as I enter the scripture text, formatting is applied automatically. I then enter the body of the message, and when scriptures are included, I just use my pre-made style to change the text's formatting; this is done using the Styles and Formatting module.

Beginning with page two, the header displays the message title, page count/number of pages, written by [my name]; all of this done automatically because of the template's design. This may seem simple and insignificant, but spending time setting up this template saves a great deal of time in the long run.

[caption id="attachment_595" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Template Page 1"][/caption]

MEMBER AND VISITOR LISTS:
Several years ago, before switching to Linux, I used OpenOffice on my Windows machine, and it worked just fine. I wanted to keep track of visitors and members in my church, so I set out to learn the best way to handle the situation. Once again, I found myself at the OOo forum asking the gurus how to best take care of the task at hand. I got several good answers, but the one which appealed to me the most was to set up an external database and use OOo as the front-end. Sounded simple enough, but the plan was wrought with one headache after another. MySQL and OOo didn't play very well in that environment, but I found an article that walked me through the details, and I soon had a complete package going.

In Linux, the task is much easier. Setting up MySQL in Mepis is easy: "apt-get install mysql mysql-server mysql-admin" does the trick. Everything that's needed is pulled in for the install. You also need "libmysql-java", so get that while you're at it. One more thing that's needed is "mysql-connector-java-3.1.12" which you can get from the MySQL site. I'm quite sure the latest connector is newer than the one I'm using, though. This is not meant to detail every step, just to give an overview.

Create your database in MySQL and create your tables in OOo. Now, you experts will probably have lots to say about my method, but this works very well for me, and it takes care of all my database needs. There are plenty of Linux programs to do what I've set up on my computer, but I have found this works best for me. Linux is great to offer several choices.

What I've described is a sample of tasks I get done using OOo and Linux. There's much more to tell, but it will have to wait for another time. I am no expert on Linux, MySQL or OOo, but use them to take care of part of what I do in ministry. If you use Linux, you know it to be a safe and solid operating system. It's nice to get my work done and not have to be concerned with all the headaches associated with Windows maintenance.

The following statement from one of the OpenOffice.org project leads set me off this morning:

The following statement from one of the OpenOffice.org project leads set me off this morning:

It's clear that the re-usability of OOo code in other projects isn't in our focus. I hope it's understandable that our main interest is the success of OOo as an end user application. It may be even a bit short-sighted, I don't know. But that's as it is.

When I look at the OOo universe, it's reminiscent of a ghetto - we live in our own world, with everything different from the rest of the FLOSS town: own build system (even with the luxury of our own make utility), own operating system abstraction (sal, osl, rtl, vcl), own configuration system, own string classes (oh, actually, two of them), own component model (UNO), etc. ad infinitum. There were good reasons to implement those back in the day, with OOo being one of the very few truly cross-platform applications.

But the world has changed, and instead of OOo promoting their libs to the rest of the FLOSS world, investing some amount of time & effort in separating e.g. UNO out of OOo and making it easily usable for others (saying that URE is such an independent package is a joke), that outside FLOSS world set the standards for those portable core libs (glib, cairo, fontconfig, dbus, etc.) - because they did succeed in encouraging other people to use their code. It's not that other projects will come and invest time to mine for reusable code - developers don't work that way, they require a decent amount of readiness, comfort, and conformance with de-facto standards (and active lobbying, sometimes), before they use it. With this myopic focus on the shipped product (disregarding the value that lies in OOo's core libs), we missed quite some chance to firmly embed OOo core technology at the heart of other FLOSS projects (that would, I conjecture, have created win-win situations, in sharing the load of maintenance, and also dragging devs into other parts of OOo - and the project has failed miserably to attract developers outside a very limited set of corporate contributors. When compared to e.g. the Linux kernel).

It's high time then, to challenge this limited vision of OOo as only an end-user application. In fact, the source tree is a gold-mine of excellent technology, that we can be proud of, and that really deserves to be used outside of the core OOo project. And to actually walk my talk, I've just put out an independent copy of the basegfx graphic core library to gitorious.org, that should build & run on anything that has the usual
./configure; make; make install
working.

That's because, if we fail at that - if we don't get more developers (directly, or indirectly by contributing to spin-off libs) working on the code, what will become of OOo in, say, five or ten years from now (cue vastly different UI concepts here, large software packages running on mobile phones etc.)? Think about what's the true value of OOo - those parts that set it apart from other, similar text processing/spreadsheet/presentation packages. Is it the dialogs, the toolkit, interactions or the packaging? Or rather the filters, ODF, the application cores, UNO? Personally, I'd love to see those jewels survive the test of time, and the challenge web-based & mobile computing poses.

And no, I don't believe just taking OOo as-is, and putting it onto a server in headless mode, makes the project appealing to anybody - it's a stop-gap solution, and as soon as light-weight, stable, threadable alternatives appear, people will flock over to them. Instead, my vision of OOo is more that of a document processing toolkit, with webkit possibly the role model of the kind of "engine" I have in mind - portable, easily pluggable, widely used (both hardware- and software-wise).

Today is Software Freedom Day (SFD) 2008, the day that we not only rejoice in Free and Open Source

Today is Software Freedom Day (SFD) 2008, the day that we not only rejoice in Free and Open Source Software (FOSS), it's also the day that we let others know how easy it can be to get work done without having to spend arms, legs, and in some cases our first born, on closed source, proprietary software. Plus free software is instrumental in making sure you're not robbed of your human rights simply for being a computer user. It's ironic, of course, that Software Freedom Day follows Talk Like A Pirate Day, especially since using free software takes coins away from the Lords of Redmond.

You can find a participating team on the SFD interactive map and find the location nearest you for information on why open source software is so great. Of course if an interactive map isn't quite your style they do have a list of the participating teams in a table format as well. In Boston the Free Software Foundation will be hosting Free Software Day (in Boston) 2008 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at Encuentro 5, 33 Harrison Ave, 5th Floor, in Boston's Chinatown.

At SFD events you'll be able to get some nice swag, possibly including tees and stickers but definitely including free copies of the OpenDisc, loaded with almost 40 software titles including

Design programs: Blender, GiMP, Inkscape and Scribus

Games: Eigma, Neverball and Sokoban YASC (Yet Another Sokoban Clone)

Internet apps: Azureus, Firefox, Pidgin, Thunderbird and TightVNC

Multimedia apps: Audacity, Celestia, Really Slick Screensavers and the VLC media player

Productivity apps: GnuCash, Notepad2, OpenOffice.org and PDF Creator

Utilities: 7-Zip, Clamwin, HealthMonitor and TrueCrypt

If you don't make it to a SFD event you can always download a disc image for the OpenDisc as well as cover art. They even have an OpedEductaionDisc designed for educators and students age 10-21+ to help them complete homework and coursework assignments. Please note that while many of these programs have Linux versions, the OpenDisc is specifically for Windows users. Of course since many of the local SFD teams are made up of Linux users you can probably find free LiveCDs of Linux distributions as well.

I want to send out a great big THANK YOU to the corporate sponsors of Software Freedom Day 2008, without whose help and finances SFD simply wouldn't happen at all, this year or any year.

まぁそんなわけでOpenOffice.orgには期待しているのです。

Wladimir Palant: Filtering HTML code in Adblock Plus. Firefox can now allow extensions to inspect and modify responses to HTTP requests before the sender gets it (coming soon to Firefox 3.0.3), and Adblock Plus is taking advantage of it by letting you use HTML code to prevent malicious JavaScript from running on yoru computer. The developer of Adblock Plus wrote a fairly technical article about how to do it, but it's definitely worth the read.

After a few weeks of scoping some sites and getting some other organizational matters straightened out, David Kaplan has gotten Portland, Ore., on the Lindependence map. As you can see from the title of the blog above, we have dropped the "Felton" because that town -- my town -- is now part of Lindependence history and we're going forward and northward.

As of their 2007 census, the city of Portland has 568,380 people. So before we start, let's be clear about something (especially to the ever-shrinking group of naysayers out there): Lindependence won't convert the entire city of Portland. Let me repeat that: Lindependence won't convert the entire city of Portland.

We were not under the impression that we would convert the entire town of Felton, California, back in July. It would have been nice to have the whole town using Linux, but let's exist in the real world, shall we? What Lindependence did achieve in Felton was, in purely agricultural terms, sowing the seeds of FOSS into the soil of a generally fertile and receptive community, and nurturing the crop begins Saturday with the first Felton LUG meeting.

Farmer David is sowing those same seeds in Portland, with a little help -- okay, a significant amount of help -- from Touchstone Technology, which has graciously agreed to host the event. David has also put up a Web site for the event, which will be the place to go for specific details about Lindependence Portland.

I'll still be blogging about Portland and other Lindependence events here, and Lindependence '08 will still be the site to go to for information about how to do this project.
