Hedgie

Use a heart shaped cookie cutter to cut a heart shape out of a sandwich.  Break a handful of pretzel sticks in half and stick them into the back of the cut out shape (as shown).  Use shorter sticks for the ones right behind the eyes.  Take 3 regular chocolate chips and using peanut butter for the glue, glue them on for the eyes and nose.  He is totally adorable and SUPER easy!!!

{{ Some of you are wondering what I do with the excess sandwich.  Well, I give it to my kids if they are still hungry.  Nothing goes to waste!!! I put this little guy into my daughter's sandwich container, with a little bit of PB underneath it to hold it in place, for her school lunch.  I put the rest of the sandwich in a baggie.  She ate all of it!! }}

tonight was one of those nights that confirmed we made a good decision.  but by god, do i miss costco.

today our outdoor plans were foiled again as well by gale force winds and rain that i swear would start as soon as i opened the front door just to piss me off.  i decided that we would stay home and bond.  so what can two 10 week olds and one 3.5 year old do together?  not much would be the answer.

good old stand by...story time.  we all piled on gemma's bed and let me tell you as soon as we did, there was no where else i wanted to be.  the babies love their big sister.  they watch her like she is the queen of their world.  me?  i'm boobs, i get a smile now and then, but gemma, she is IT.

gemma grabbed a stack of books with a common theme of fairies.  while i read and gemma turned the pages, the babies did not scream.  they were tiny little slack jawed, starry eyed, suck ups.  making cute goo's and gaa's when she even just glanced at them.  i was almost jealous.   but then clover started to fuss and before i could even get fully irritated,  this happened, the simple moment when i swear my heart got too big for my body and a three year old changed my attitude... gemma did not miss a beat and she gently patted her sister on the head and said in the sweetest voice: "don't worry clover, our mommy is right here.  she is here and it will be alright."

as i took a photo, it hit me hard...i am their mommy and right now in their lives,  i have the power to make things alright.  i better never forget that.

Doodle's favourite band is The Terrible Twos, and we've had very little else playing since we got their new album a few weeks ago (it's awesome - get it and this one).  In fact, we rarely make it past the first song, since Doodle starts asking for Old Man Miller again before it's even over (check out the sweet dancing on that video!).  Despite the line "Old Man Miller was a porcupine," the title character does not actually seem to be a porcupine, but, still, the image remains, and I decided to stop fighting the inevitable and draw a porcupine this week.  Doodle is thrilled.

We arrived there at about 9:40 a.m. and headed straight for the ticket counter. The tickets cost RM15 for adults and RM6 for children. As we were crossing the bridge near the main entrance we saw tall giraffes - my siblings and I screamed with excitement. We rushed there and were welcome by a flock of milky storks.  What an awesome sight it was to see the beautiful birds flocking all around the lake. Next we were welcomed by elephants, Pademelons kangaroos and ostriches.

At the bird aviary we saw birds of all sizes and colours. I just love the colourful 'burung nuri' or alouette in French and we started to sing our favourite song- Alouette. Next we saw deers, lions, tigers, buffaloes, camels and many more.  It was nice to see the orangutans clinging to the pillars while sleeping in their 'tree house'. Anyway some parts of the zoo were closed for repairs.

At the Savannah Walk, we saw another group of giraffes eating their food, zebras, antelopes and rhinos. We also saw a gigantic turtle that could be around two hundred years old. Next, we saw mousedeers, goats and a tapir. At the end of the Savannah Walk is the bear complex. There are Brown Bears, Malaysian Sun Bears, Asiatic Black Bears and Sloth Bears. Most of them are sleeping. Now I know why Winnie The Pooh is so lazy!

On the way to the  Multi-Animal Show, we saw monkeys and lessers in big cages swinging from branch to branch, fishes and humboldt penguins.  The show started four minutes late and the performers were three colourful macaws and two sea lions.

After the show, we headed towards the Children's World which is something like a Petting Zoo. Among others there are birds, ponies, scorpions, chickens and porcupines. At the reptile and amphibian house we saw snakes, crocodiles, frog, terrapins, turtle and tortoise. We saw leopards and pumas but there was no jaguar- my little brother Ahmad Ali wanted to see a baby jaguar as in his favourite TV show 'Go Diego Go'. Before heading home mum bought us delicious creamy ice-cream; I guess ice-cream to zoo is just like pop-corn to movies.

We had a wonderful time at the zoo and learn a lot of things too. Anyway I feel very sad to see run down buildings in the zoo complex. The government is proud of KLIA, the Petronas Twin Towers, The Sepang Curcuit etc  but look at our National Zoo- what a shame. I hope our government will see  the importance of getting the zoo in good shape for it is a very educational place to visit especially for kids like me. Not everybody can afford to pay the entrance fees to places like the KLCC Aquaria and other expensive places to learn about animals so the government has to take actions towards saving and upgrading the National Zoo for it is one of a few affordable places for family outing in KL. Furthermore the place is so beautiful especially the grand old trees, the lake and the streams.

But don't let that keep you from enjoying the Northwoods.  This photograph was taken at the same time as the porcupine attack:

Sunday we drove up to Ontonogan for our annual trip to one of the Great Lakes. My town of Caspian is located an hour from Lake Superior and Lake Michigan and every summer we try to at least spend a day at the beach. We usually go with my brother's family and our good friends the Bonettis. This year Jim couldn't make it, but we went up with Mark, his wife Danell, and children Brandl and Lauren.

We wanted also to explore the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. It was about 90 miles away from Caspian. We stayed at the Superior Shores Resort located on the Lake about 6 miles outside of the park. The annual trip is also a celebration of "Yooper Culture" and we try to stay in locally owned motels and eat in local restaraunts.

Lake Superior is one of my favorite places in the world. It has the largest surface area of any freshwater lake in the world (82,178 km square). It's average depth is 149 meters. It is the Lake that took down the ss Edmond Fitzgerald in 1975, memorilized in that famous song by Gordon Lightfoot. British poet Rupert Brooke had noted in 1913, "These monstrous lakes, which ape the oceans, are not proper to fresh water or salt. They have souls, and they are wicked ones." It is also a very cold lake, with an average temperature of 40 degrees F. The lake is huge and cold and beautiful. (I like that Hemmingway-esque description)

The weather was cold on Sunday, we we loved it. After we settled in to the motel, we went for a hike at the Lake of the Clouds inside the park. We made it down to the lake in back. In the evening we went to the Kontecka Supper Club in near by White Pine. This is a dying little town near the park. There used to be a big copper mine, but when it shut down in the late 80's, so did most of the town. The club feeds local wild bears and it was great the kids had a chance to watch the big black bears come in. I do not like this artificial feeding, but it has helped the club survive. Many tourists go there to watch the bears and have a bite to eat.

The next day we made a short stop at Bonanza Falls after lounging at the motel and a pancake breakfast at Syl's Cafe in Ontonogan. There was a bad smell downtown Ontonogan from the big paper mill. The mill makes corrugated cardboard and employs around 300 people. We then drove just east of town and there is a nice public beach on the lake. It was a nice sunny day and we really enjoyed a day at the beach. I took the photo of Owen above.

I wake up in a panic.  I go to the bathroom, but everytime I close my eyes (don't ask, it is more pleasant that way, believe you me) I would see images of nerdly library like guys scuttling back and forth but always keeping eye contact with me.  I was very affraid.  I had to think of my imaginary friend pooh bear and what he would say to me.  Pooh didn't say anything, but he led me back to bed, and then sat on me and crossed his arms, looking back and forth very menacingly.  Then I was able to relax.

Please, dear readers, I need some insight.  please tell me what it all means.

Cousin Jeremiah loves fishes and knows many of them by name, habitat and what they eat. We went to the aquarium first and it was hard for Jeremiah to contain himself! So many fishes and aquatic species to look at.

As you can tell from the number of photos I took of the belugas, those were probably our favorite. I took a video of Jeremiah saying "hey beluga" as the beluga swam by. This will be my first blog video, so please let me know how it works for you.
