Here we go. I'll let you know how I did on Monday.

World Title Samoa, Joe VS. Sting: I'm going with Samoa Joe on this one even though I like Sting and hope he wins.

Grudge Match, Jeff Jarrett VS. Kurt Angle (Special referee Mick Foley): I don't know who to go with here, but I'm going to go with Jarrett for a triumphant return. Reall though, the fans win now that Mick Foley is in TNA.

Three Way, Christian Cage VS. A.j. Styles VS. Booker T: I'm going with Christian Cage again because I think they want to keep the feud with the old timers and the new talent going longer. That's the same reason I'm going with Joe.

Monsters Ball, Beer Money VS. LAX VS. Team 3d VS. Abyss & Matt Morgan (Special Enforcer Mongo): Good grief this match will be epic. I'm going with Abyss & Morgan since they seem to be getting a push these days. In addtion to that being in Monsters Ball could psychologically snap Abyss and bring him back to his old self during the match. ON the other hand it could be Team 3D. I hear they're going to use flaming tables again as a weapon! Plus it would be quite the 21st tag team win for them against 3 other tag teams. But still I'm going with Abyss and Morgan. Now, what Mongo, the four horsemen alumnus, is doing there as an "enforcer" He can't enforce a match that has practically no rules unless someone started using rules then he'd have to stop them!

X-Division, Sheik Abdul Bashir vs. Consequences Creed:I'm going with Consequences Creed on this one because I think they want to push him in the old timers VS. new talent feud. Although, technically, I would consider The Sheik new talent too.

Knockouts Championship, Taylor Wilde VS. Awesome Kong VS. Roxxi: Roxxi because I like her the most!

Knockouts Bimbo Brawl, Rhino, ODB & Rhaka Khan VS. The Beautiful People & Cute Kip:I'm going with Rhino, ODB, and Rhaka Khan although I don't think Khan is a good wrestler yet. She seemed clumsy the last time I saw her and the hand/paw licking lip licking gimmick was totally weird and useless. She did that more than any actual wrestling.

If you're familiar with the meme, of which there are a ton of, or are a fan of Dragonball Z, or both like me then go read the latest Chainsaw Suit strip. You'll find it extra hilarious!

I was thinking it was something like stone carvings made to look like balloons or kids holding balloons or something lame like that. That is totally not what this is about. Jason Hackenwerth is a balloon tying master who crafts the oddest shaped creations out of actual balloons. This isn't even in the same universe as a circus clown dog. His pieces are totally insane! I can't even imagine how many balloons it takes or how many he pops, but the end resut is beyond awesome. After looking at the pictures the shapes start to look like creatures and monsters. Some towards the end look like the slug things in the anime Nausicaa If you're into twisted balloon shapes or complete awesomeness in general go check these balloon sculptures out!

What is Gurren Lagann? Gurren Lagann is one of the best Giant Robot animes I’ve seen since G G

What is Gurren Lagann? Gurren Lagann is one of the best Giant Robot animes I've seen since G Gundam. It's about aliens which are half animal and half human called Beastmen who invade the earth and drive the humans underground. The Beastmen pilot Giant Robots called Gunmen. One day two humans Kamina and Simon find a Gunman, take it to the surface, and the begin to take back the earth from the Beastmen. Throughout the series they find other humans who join them and steal Gunmen from defeated Beastmen which they use to help Kamina and Simon in their fight. What makes this Giant Robot series unique is the fact that it's hilarious in the FLCL Gainax tradition, it has some seriously sick fight scenes with the Gunmen, and most importantly the characters who pilot the Giant Robots actually want to pilot the robots and have a good time doing it. One thing I hate about a lot of Giant Robot series is that the people who are fortunate enough to get to pilot the robots don't want to. It becomes a burden to them, they don't want the responsibility, and they brood about it, and blah blah blah. It really brings the series down. I stop watching a lot of them half way through because of it. Luckily Gurren Lagann doesn't suffer from this malady and so it's an awesome a fun series to watch all the way through. If you like Giant Robots, humor, or good anime in general check out Gurren Lagann. I saw it on the Sci Fi channel. They might replay it again and if they do then do yourself a favor and watch it.

I just finished watching Smackdown for this week. It was totally awesome. I nearly watched the full two hours this time. I know why it was so awesome. I knew it was going to be awesome when I first heard about the premiere show on My network TV. It was awesome because the best wrestlers weren't spread out over three shows. They were all on one show so almost every match was a premium match. This is why TNA is so good. They don't have three shows. They have one focused show every week with their best wrestlers and it totally rules. I wish the WWE would do this. I'm not saying just have RAW or whatever. I'm saying switch the wrestlers around between the shows. Have at least three premium matches each week with guys that don't usually wrestle each other. That's what WCW used to do with Nitro and Thunder. Some guys you'd see on one, but not the other. Some guys you'd see on both and then it would change the next week. It kept things fresh. The whole draft thing and people sticking to one shows makes it really boring. So, anyway, this week was awesome and I really appreciated it, but next week I expect more of the same and once again I'll cut a two hour show down to 45 minutes on the DVR.

Like many of my fellow Americans I watched the debate last night and I thought both speakers had good claims and positions. But the question remains who really is the better acquisition to TNA? Is it Kurt Angle, 1996 Olympic Gold Medal recipient, victor of innumerable matches in WWE against practically every superstar, one of the top draws in TNA and one of the reasons TNA went from being an hour show to a two hour show. Is it Mick Foley, the father of hardcore, who as Mankind, Cactus Jack, Dude Love, and himself put his body and maybe is very mental state on the line night in and night out in sacrifice to his utterly devoted fans. Who's to say for sure? It's like Mick Foley himself said you can think one way or another. In my opinion I can only remember two or three exceptional matches with Kurt Angle, but with Foley, and this is the reason I'm one of the devoted fans, I've seen this master of hardcore get set on fire, get hit with barbed wired. fall on tacks, and get a tooth shoved up his nose, among other things, all with a smile on his face. Bang Bang. So, In my mind it is Foley who is the better acquisition, but in reality who knows for sure. What I do know for a fact is that TNA is all the better for having both Foley and Angle in the company.

If you've been reading this Atomsplit blog for a while you probably already know I'm a fan of cowboy movies. Last night I just saw a commercial for a new one coming out called Appalossa that looks pretty good. After seeing that I started thinking about Saiyuki Western Django and The Good The Bad And The Weird. Then that got me to thinking that it sure has been a long time since I've seen the mighty Young Guns 1 and Young Guns 2 and The Quick And The Dead. Then that got me thinking that as soon as Appalossa comes out on DVD I'm going to rent all these movies and make a day...or two out of it. Giddy up!

If you're stumbling across this page for the first time you're probably wondering what is Atomsplit all about. Well, Atomsplit is a cartoon, comic strip, game, and general multimedia story about an indie rock band who comes into contact with and old school rocker named Bobby Vandertramp who trains the young indie rockers to create and control the Divine Sound, a sound so strong and powerful it can do anything. However, there are some folks who don't want Atomsplit to have access to such a powerful sound, namely, the recording corporation and they're representative Mr. Peevil. It's up to Atomsplit to perfect the Divine Sound and share it with the world while at the same time staying one step ahead of the music companies and Mr. Peevil. Atomsplit in production now and I hope all you future Atomsplitters will enjoy it when it launches.

The Kingdowm Under Fire series can't get it quite right with me. I wanted to play Kingdom Under Fire because it looked good at I heard it was an action RPG. Then I played it at my friend's house and found out it had Real Time Strategy elements I had to command people to do stuff. So that was fun for about two seconds and then I was done. I don't like taking time out of my schedule of school fools on the battle field in order to tell other people what to do. Next there was Kingdom Under Fire 2. I dismissed this game out right for being a complete Real Time Strategy game. Next, Ninety Nine Nights. Now we're talking! I don't have to tell any one what to do. All I have to do is set up my forces. then let them automatically do their thing while I go in there and lay out a beating on everybody. This is totally fun for the first couple of stages then you realize that that's all there is a couple of stages per character that you have to play over and over until you level up to max, find the good weapon, and take out the last boss. That got totally boring real fast, but at least it had a little story I could get behind. Finally comes Kingdom Under Fire: Circle Of Doom. Here we are! I'm all alone. I'm leveling up. There's some awesome looking stages, bosses, the whole bit except for one thing. I don't know who I am or what I'm doing or why I'm doing it. There's some sort of nonsensical light and dark story that suggests things for quests when I sleep, but that's about it. If this game were about a story I would have forgotten it twenty minutes after I started, but it's not about a story it's totally about loot. Lott, loot, loot! I kill all the monsters and they drop tons of loot that I get and maximize my character with then I get to the selling idol, sell my junk and buy even better loot to maximize my character. Then, after I fought the first boss last night it dropped a sick armor and I was like oh that's cool. Then all of a sudden it started raining loot!!! There was a time limit on how much loot I could loot! The whole equipment loot scheme smacks of Diablo and Record Of The Lodoss War, but I don't care because i like those game and I like this game. If it keeps on going this way I'm going to be pleasantly surprised. So far Blue Side's made a good, fun game to play. If they had beefed up the story some more it would have been a great game. Hopefully, Kingdom Under Fire: Circle Of Doom 2 will be a great game.

Before I moved on to Kingdom Under Fire: Circle Of Doom though I made fifty customized characters for when friends come over or I want to jump online and play Soul Calibur. Four of my customizable characters are, you guessed it, Atomsplit. Check them out:

TNA was as great as ever last night, but they did something that was especially awesome last night. To preface this I will say I've never been a fan of women wrestling and in fact when I watch Smackdown I skip the WWE Diva talking parts and wrestling parts and save myself around 20-30 minutes of time. I used to, on the whole, dismiss the TNA women's division called the Knockouts. I'll admit that they have some interesting characters like Roxxi Leveau, ODB, and Awesome Kong, but still I wasn't really all that interested in women's wrestling until last night. Lat Night Roxxi Leveau came out dressed as Raisha Saeed. At the end of Kong's match she revealed herself, surprised Kong, took her down, and started to turn her face into hamburger. Then to ice that cake she gave Kong a couple of chaiir shots. I'm officially a fan of Roxxi Leveau now. This is a bold move on TNA's part. Instead of dressing their women up in Las Vegas outfits and making them jump around and do gymnastics for twenty minutes they're letting them fight! Bravo TNA! The WWE seriously better start taking some notes here. On a side note I predicted a war between the vets and the new gen wrestlers on August 29th. In the same post I said it probably wouldn't happen, but it is happening! Sweet. Now, where does Mick Foley fit into this puzzle. I don't know yet, but I'll find out next week.

Last time I showed you a stop-motion music video by The Deadly Deaths. This is another song, by Digitalism. It's called "Pogo." It's different from the last one in that it looks more like a traditional stop-motion clip. At the same time, this uses a few techniques that aren't as common. Watch to see what I'm talking about.

Here it is. If you can't see the video below, just follow the link.

Digitalism 'Pogo' music video from Aske Pedersen on Vimeo.

BONUS: A friend of mine is pretty good at following the news. You've probably at least heard about the Large Hadron Collider. If not, that's what links are for, and there's one in front of this sentence. Once you've been read in, check this site out.

I'll be in SF this weekend. Tell me about your favorite restaurant.

Izzy’s Steak and Chops! Enough said.

Powerpop artists are notorious (not saying that's a bad thing) for wearing their influences on their sleeves. Some of your songs from "Free at Last" trigger an immediate "influences" response in me. Tell me what you think...

"Whiskey & Speed" — Brian May guitar choirs

Guilty as charged. But let me explain: it’s not that easy to get the sound like that. So, I’m really proud that I got some of them to come out that way. The key actually lies in getting a rather small and shitty sound out of each individual guitar, so that only together do they conjoin into a megarrific “guitarmy.” Same with the vocals- It’s a counterintuitive process, but sometimes less really is more. I think all the guitars for that song were done in my closet, and then “flown-in” during the main mixing sessions. Damn, I love computers sometimes!

"Rock and Roll Slut" — "Millionaire Waltz" (esp. the John Deacon-y bass run that climbs up the 10ths under the backwards harmony guitars in the intro)

John Deacon, and Steve Harris from Maiden are my bass gods. Every time I lay down bass tracks, I try to make them a combination of those guys. I love the album “A Day At The Races”, and John Deacon’s playing on that whole album is amazing. The interplay between the piano and the bass in the beginning of “Millionaire Waltz” is genius. But the middle section is my favorite—the slow middle section is so frickin’ sad and prophetic, in retrospect: Freddie singing “my fine friends, take me with you and love me forever…” Whewwwww!

"Free at Last" — very Django-ish solo break

Yeah! I mean thank you! But yes. What happened is that I was trying to lay the solo down in the studio at Hyde Street, and was just not happy with any of the takes I did.
I took it home and re-recorded it in my closet, but I’d left my nylon-string at the studio, so I had to record on a steel string. I wanted a gypsy feel. The classical nylon guitar gave it a more flamenco feel, but the steel strings are what probably makes it sound more like Django. That’s a wonderful compliment by the way. Thank you.

"Tiger on a Treadmill" — Supertramp (castanets and Wurly, kids!)

Hell yes. There’s a big trunk of percussion instruments in the corner of the live room at Studio C, and since the beloved vibraslap was being used—PRODIGIOUSLY—on a couple other tunes, and the cowbell was making an appearance in the album, I wanted something different and cheeky for “Tiger.” The Wurly was already a big part of the arrangement, and as anyone who listens to Supertramp knows, Wurly and castanets go together like chocolate and peanut-butter! So, it’s my cheeky chocolate-peanutbutter moment.

"Water in My Brain" — '80s (90125)-era Yes... you do a good Jon Anderson

I’m not sure WHAT I was going for with that one! The early demo was part of my first foray into electronica. It was originally written as part of an aborted hare-brained scheme of mine to try to get out of a bad contract that I’d signed. (The ol’ “contractual obligation” recording.) Everyone I played it for didn’t get the joke, but liked the tune! So it got a bit of a facelift, got re-recorded and now it’s the song we usually close our shows with! I love that it’s on the album.

"Bad with the Superbad" — Ben Folds

Ben Folds is a huge influence (obviously). I love his punk ethic. In a lot of ways he’s way more punk than any of the so-called punks you have nowadays. Punk isn’t a t-shirt, dumb-dumbs!

I love how obnoxiously big his makes his piano sound on his recordings. I figured, I’ll just add some extra guitars for the shit-kicker factor. I wanted the drums to sound like Dave Grohl on a combination of acid and steroids. (And I managed to use the word “biatch” in a song, which has been a dream of mine for like 10 years. Hehe.)

Enough about influences — what's your writing process like? Do you hear arrangements in your head and "know" them immediately, or do you work it out in the studio?

I usually don’t even ENTER the studio without pretty exhaustive, kitchen-sink demos already recorded into a Pro Tools session. So I just show up with a bunch of hard-drives under my arm. Although I manage to squeeze a lot of production into a very compressed timeframe when in the studio, for whatever reason—maybe it’s all the toys, gizmos and flashing lights—I freeze up in the studio when it comes to writing. I probably could if really HAD to, but it’s not my favorite place to write. I usually come up with the important ideas when I’m doing things that are superficially unrelated to music, like taking a shower, shooting things in a video game, or jogging around the block. I can’t even begin to tell you how many tunes I’ve written just waiting on a platform for a train. I do a lot of singing into my cell phone voicemail, and usually at times and places that are very embarrassing for anyone else who’s with me.

And yes, I do seem to hear complete arrangements in my head pretty early on, if not immediately. But sometimes you’ve got to let ideas bounce around in your grape for an extended period of time before they manifest themselves into anything musically meaningful. In the studio you’re constantly on the clock, so for me at least it’s not the best environment for that side of it. But I think the reason I’m able to get so much production shit done in the studio is because of all the pre-production and arranging before I go in.

What's on your plate next?

EUROPEAN TOUR!!!! (more on that later…)

What's on your iPod lately?

Radiohead, Zeppelin. Jordan Carp. Leonard Cohen. Randy Newman. And I’ve been on a Berlioz, Bruckner and Puccini binge lately too.

Are you surprised by the positive reaction to "Free at Last"?

I figured the best and only thing for this album would be to try to maintain a certain level of musical "honesty"- at all costs, including maybe some commercial costs, frankly. But I’m glad I did. I fought (sometimes with myself) to maintain this attitude through every process of the album: writing, recording, producing, mixing, mastering.

With that frame of mine, I hoped that somebody somewhere would get it, eventually. (Not everybody has, mind you.) But I’ve been pretty blown away by some of the things that are being said about the record. It’s so nice to know that sticking to my guns yielded something that’s being enjoyed and appreciated by others.
