<title><![CDATA[Avoiding the Autoclose and Autoshrink Options]]></title>

<description><![CDATA[ Q
In the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Resource Kit, I read about a procedure that checks all databases]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align:justify;"><!--[if gte mso 9]&#62;  Normal 0   &#60;![endif]--> <strong><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Verdana;">Q</span></strong><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Verdana;"><br />
In the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Resource Kit, I read about a procedure that checks all databases for options that you should avoid using. I understand why I should avoid using options such as offline, DBO-use only, statistics off, truncate log on checkpoint, and so on. However, the inclusion of two of the options—autoclose and autoshrink—puzzles me. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Verdana;">Autoclose. Closing a file when it is not in use sounds like a prudent thing to do. Yet I see files opening and closing all the time in the error log in SQL Server, even though I know that I never use the database except for viewing in Enterprise Manager. Does viewing a list of databases in Enterprise Manager make the files open? It makes sense to me to use autoclose on databases that I use only occasionally as import staging areas, and which I access for only a fraction of the time my online transaction processing (OLTP) database is in use. SQL Server Books Online says that the autoclose option is automatically set to YES for the SQL Server Personal Edition and to NO for all other editions. Has this option been included only for the Personal Edition?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Verdana;">Autoshrink. The autoshrink option also sounds helpful. However, would using autoshrink on my import staging areas, where I bring in quantities of data for short periods of time, keep these areas small for backups?</span></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Verdana;">A</span></strong><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Verdana;"><br />
Autoclose is available in all editions of SQL Server 2000. The amount of memory you save by using this option is relatively small but might be important on memory-constrained systems running the Personal Edition. However, enabling autoclose for the other editions isn't a good idea, because every time you try to access the database, the query will be slowed by the amount of load time it takes to mount the database. As for the question about your files opening and closing, yes, when you enumerate a database in Enterprise Manager, you access the database, which opens the files.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Verdana;">Leaving autoshrink on for production systems also isn't a good practice (unless you really need to), because autoshrink might start when your system is otherwise busy with production work, and slow down the system. However, enabling this option is a good idea for desktop or remote systems that don't get a lot of DBA attention and whose databases could grow out of control before you detect the problem.</span></p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This is a site called <a href="http://www.lyricsandsongs.com/lyrics/MR._CHILDREN.html" target="_blank">Lyrics and Songs</a>. I don't have time to check through the lyrics and re-doing them, I haven't had time to even clean up the ones in this site!</p>
<p>So, I am posting the link as is. You can browse through them for lyrics that I don't have yet in the Songlist. Also, at the bottom of <a href="http://www.lyricsandsongs.com/lyrics/MR._CHILDREN.html" target="_blank">Lyrics and Songs' Mr Children page</a> there is a link for songs with Japanese titles, so you should click that too.</p>
<p>Sorry, scarce pickings. I am still in Hari Raya mode.</p>

<description><![CDATA[I have potential beyond my demonstrated ability&#8230;this is no secret. For many years, my top-no]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="font-size:9pt;color:#000000;font-family:Verdana;">I have potential beyond my demonstrated ability...this is no secret. For many years, my top-notch report cards (often straight A's) were accompanied by the following statement:</span></p>
<p style="text-align:center;" align="center"><span style="font-size:9pt;color:#000000;font-family:Verdana;"> "Student does not perform to her full potential." </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:9pt;color:#000000;font-family:Verdana;">That I was getting this comment written about me in junior high and high school is not surprising...that I got it as early as 1st grade <strong><span style="font-family:Verdana;">is</span></strong>. And while I have long considered this comment a testament to my "genius", I failed to note it as a statement of failure or underperformance. My behavior did not reflect who I am and I know it!</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:9pt;color:#000000;font-family:Verdana;">I can trace my <em><span style="font-family:Verdana;">underperformance habit</span></em> to my upbringing -- raised within a hillbilly family who's favorite phrase was "don't you get above your raising!" In a family such as this, one learns that it's not only bad, but dangerous to perform to a fraction of your potential much less the full level! It was this philosophy, in conjunction with emotional abuse that directed my diminished performance in the classroom. An easily predicted outcome I think given the environment.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:9pt;color:#000000;font-family:Verdana;">I must be noted however that it has been more than 27 years since I graduated high school, and yet I still catch myself engaging in this same manner...I admit I staggered through the college experience; failing of course, to garner the academic degree. For years I've chided myself that 'I just couldn't settle down to a major, that I was more interested in learning than achieving, and that the degree is over rated'. While technically true on all accounts (I continue to be bored if not actively engaged in a new subject) I have to acknowledge the role of my underperformance as well.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:9pt;color:#000000;font-family:Verdana;">I know intellectually that where I am (in terms of life, career, and relationships) is quite simply the sum of my choices, and yet I am living a life (or more correctly 'existing a life') that I don't care for. I am not regularly engaging in activities that I love, don't take risks in my relationships, and have FAR too many unrealized dreams (excluding those that could more accurately be labeled 'fantasies'!) It's not comfortable being in this place, and yet I've done little to move out of it...So why am I not living with integrity? Why do I settle for less? To some degree, a heavy dose of fear, but largely, simply a habit of underperformance and diminished expectations (think about it, if you don't expect much, it's harder to be disappointed.) I've settled for less than my dream...how sad.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:9pt;color:#000000;font-family:Verdana;">The logical response to this info is of course "how do I alter this?" Undoubtedly it will take awareness, hard work (including that #$%@ dirty word: discipline), and clearly, a dose of <strong><span style="font-family:Verdana;">courage</span></strong> <strong><span style="font-family:Verdana;">to change</span></strong>. As I often do, I consulted the book stacks and came across <span style="text-decoration:underline;">Find Your Courage!</span> by Margie Warrell. The subtitle of this book is "Unleash Your Full Potential &#38; Live the Life You <em><span style="font-family:Verdana;">Really</span></em> Want." Like many self-help books about Change, it addresses the various issues of change-resistance, lack of self-confidence/trust, as well as the role of dreams in our life. As someone who has leapt into a "dream" many times, I found the most engaging idea in this volume to be that "your dream is not about a destination you are supposed to arrive at but rather a direction you will begin to travel" giving credence to my belief that life is the journey...</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:9pt;color:#000000;font-family:Verdana;">Will I integrate this perspective into my daily living? I certainly hope so, because what I've been doing for years isn't "working" in terms of living with integrity, as myself, comfortable in my skin. And while it's easier said than done, it's time to take a cue from Kate Winslett's character in the film <span style="text-decoration:underline;">Holiday</span> and accept that "surely you should be the leading lady in your own life!"</span></p>

I found the coding from below link. <a><br />

<p>This trick is not secure as users will still be able to copy and paste in the word document and still be able to print it.<br />

<description><![CDATA[We live in a contract -oriented society. Everything we do now has to be in black and white. Emails ]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>We live in a contract -oriented society. Everything we do now has to be in black and white. Emails are sent to the person intented and CCed it to somebody else to cover ourselves. Contacts form the basis on which we live.  Basically a contract is an agreement formed between two or more people specifying that if they will do something, I will do something. A bank will loan me money if I make my monthly installments. This creates a mentality of "If they will I will". If they do not fulfill their part of the agreement I am free to back out of mine. </p>
<p>What happens when we take that contract mentality into our relationships? Some of us can only feel certain that the other person will live up to their claims when there is a contact. "If I wash the dishes, you cook the meal", "If I wash the cloths you iron them". We live life on contracts. Even sub consciously we draw up contacts in mind without even consulting the other person. "If John does  not come on time again. I will always be late when I meet up with him again." or "I always get Mary a birthday present but she never gets me anything on my birthday. If she does not get me anything this year I wont get her something on her birthday from now on." These are just very general examples, however I am sure that you will be able to think of some examples with your life where you have written a contact with yourself regarding somebody else. This becomes our defense mechanism to prevent ourselves from getting hurt or feeling like we are getting the short end of the stick.</p>
<p>Contracts in life do help us to maintain some kind of "fairness". Not all contracts are bad. In fact making a contact is by no means evil in itself it is the mentality that develops from the use of contracts that I believe becomes unhealthy.</p>
<p>There are generally 5 characteristics of contracts</p>
<p><strong>Contracts are usually drawn up for a limited time periods</strong>- example taking a loan from the bank to buy a car. The bank agrees to loan you X amount of dollars for Y amount of years and you have to pay back in monthly installments. If payment is defaulted the car may be repossessed by the bank. Can you relate that into your relationships? Have we given somebody a time limit to change his/her character if not we will give up on that person?</p>
<p><strong>Contracts most often deal with a specific action</strong>- When you buy an appliance from a company. There usually is a warranty. In fine print you will see if they cover the parts or labour and if parts what parts do they cover and which they do not. Most contracts made in relationships are also action orientated, like " If you pack the room this weekend and let me go shopping, I will do the packing next week and let you watch soccer with your friends"The act of packing becomes the "cost" of going out.</p>
<p><strong>Contracts are usually based on "If....Then...."</strong>- If you will do these, then I will do that. It is the very basis on with almost all contracts are based on. If you are willing than I am willing. Most of us will at one point or other bring this mentality into our relationships. It might sound perfectly fine on paper, after all it is 'fair' however what happens when one party is not willing or unable to fulfill it? In a contract mentality like this, there will never be a progress unless both parties continue to be willing.</p>
<p><strong>Contracts are motivated by the desire to get something we desire</strong>- Is that not true? When we want to get something we began to negotiate a contract with someone."If I wash the car today, will you cook my favorite dish tonight" In the end it is to get what we want and based on how important that "thing" is to us we are willing to "pay" more for it. Whether payment is in time, emotions or cash.</p>
<p><strong>Contracts are sometimes unspoken</strong>- Alot of relationships dance around unspoken communication. "If I let him watch soccer on Friday, he will accompany me on sat. However if I don't let him watch soccer on Friday he will "give it to me" the whole of sat" This is contract written without even being spoken. The longer we know a person the more unspoken contracts are tend to be written.</p>
<p>In contract relationship, you can clearly see how hard if not impossible to always maintain a healthy relationship between spouse, friends or family. Too much focus in placed on self and what I can get out of this deal. Sadly this is how the world has trained us to think, behave and react in almost any situation.</p>
<p>Why does the bible use the word covenant instead of contract? Contract are made to ensure that both parties fulfill their individual parts in the agreement in order for the contract to be fulfilled. In a case where one party is unable to uphold their end of the agreement the other person has the legal right to dissolve the contract. However God does not want us to have a contact mentality. With that mentality we get into relationships, jobs, or just about anything with the mentality that if I do not get what I expect out of this I can just walk away from it. The divorce rate around the world in on the rise even in so called christian marriages. It is a scary thought that what was once taboo? now is so common, divorce is no longer the last resort but the first threat used in marriages. Why? because instead of till death do us part in their minds it is since you are the death of me lets part!</p>
<p>Our God is a covenantal God. Whats the difference between the two? God made a covenant with Noah when He asked Noah to build Him an ark. God took the initiative in making the covenant and it was purely for Noah's benefit. Noah accepted the covenant with God to do what he could do (build the ark) and accept the gift of God's grace something he could not do for himself (save himself from the flood) God's motive was not to get the ark for himself, he did not need it. But Noah did. His building of the ark showed his acceptance of God's covenant offer of deliverance.</p>
<p>BTW alot of the ideas from this post comes from a book that I am reading ATM titled "Now You're speaking My Language" by Gary Chapman.</p>

<h3>The Power of Repeated Reading in Small Group Instruction.</h3>
<p>by <strong>Wendie Bramwell</strong> (Author), <strong>Brooke Graham Doyle</strong> (Author)</p>
<ul> <strong>Reading level:</strong> Ages 9-12</p>
<p><strong>Paperback:</strong> 96 pages</p>
<p><strong>Publisher:</strong> Scholastic (July 1, 2008)</p>
<p><strong>Language:</strong> English</ul>
<p>In response to the National Reading Panel's report many school districts and teachers have become more conscious of using scientifically researched based reading strategies. Based on the findings of the report, one of the critical factors necessary for reading comprehension is repeated reading. The authors of <em>The Power of Repeated Reading</em>, Wendie Bramwell &#38; Brooke Graham Doyle, have compiled a list of strategies for a specific type of repeated reading known as "dialogic reading." Dialogic reading involves multiple readings, in small group settings, with questioning and responding to children during the readings.</p>
<p><!--more-->Having an understanding that a critical component of dialogic reading is the interactive behaviors between teachers and students gives us a framework with which to read this book. The authors do a remarkable job offering guidelines for organizing the classroom as well as selecting appropriate stories. Additionally, they provide book recommendations, suggestions for home/school connections, and an examination of the research. At the back of the book are three hand-out sheets as well as teacher reflection pages. The hand-outs are worth the price of the book by themselves; they give the teacher some guidelines on how to become familiar with dialogic reading and helpful suggestions for creating reading questions.</p>
<p>I do not want to trivialize the importance of dialogical reading with a superficial look at the authors' research. The opportunities for emotional growth as well as literacy development are evident when teachers choose books for repeated reading. Stories with emotional-social content present models for problem solving, interacting, and decision making. It allows children to have the opportunity to develop as individual readers while participating in an activity that leads to social competence. Bramwell and Doyle augment their credibility with a summary of the research surrounding dialogic reading.</p>
<p>As a Reading Specialist who is frequently a coach for classroom teachers I would use this book as a resource when discussing essential elements in a literacy program. Dialogic Reading is a strategy which offers students the opportunity to develop as readers and thinkers while promoting positive social skills; and this book gives teachers the groundwork to use this researched based strategy instantaneously</p>

<description><![CDATA[In the current system that we are building, we are a communications hub between a half dozen third p]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In the current system that we are building, we are a communications hub between a half dozen third party systems. In order to enable us to do some extensive integration and load testing, we've been forced to develop <em>simulators</em> that can stand in for the various systems we will be linking to since we probably won't be integrating with our actual partners until pretty late in the game.</p>
<p>I'm currently working on a simulator for a <a href="http://it.toolbox.com/wiki/index.php/Pick/Pack/Ship">pick, pack and ship</a> partner. We will be POSTing product orders as xml and asynchronously receiving order status and shipment notification updates that are POSTed back as xml. The simulator is functionally equivalent to a car with an empty engine compartment. All of the interfaces that a user (our system) would see are there but when you press the gas pedal (send an order), it just makes "vroom, vroom" noises (returns mock data). It is a fully functional web application with a REST style WS interface and several internal JMS processing queues. The processing, however, is simplistic and deterministic.</p>
<p>You might be asking yourself what any of this has to do with Spring or Resources. I was just getting to that.</p>
<p>In our main application, we have a 'hidden' feature that allows us to send a canned (static) xml document to this pick, pack and ship partner for testing. Yesterday, after standing up the PPS simulator and trying to send it a message from our main application, I ran into a problem.</p>
<p>The original developer of this feature put the static sample xml that we are sending inside one of the classes as a string:</p>
<p>[sourcecode language="java"]<br />
private static String ORDER_XML = "<order>..."<br />
                                               + "<customer>...."<br />
                                               + "<br />
<address>....";<br />
[/sourcecode]</p>
<p>I almost started crying when I saw this.</p>
<p>Much as I discussed <a href="http://heuristicexception.wordpress.com/2008/10/01/using-velocity-in-your-spring-applications/">yesterday</a>, it turns out that I had to change these canned document because somewhere along the way, we had added namespace handling to our processing logic and these documents weren't using namespaces.</p>
<p>After cursing this developers name under my breath and then out loud, I decided some refactoring was in order--I saw additional changes coming and I didn't want to have to maintain this kind of embedded xml again in a few weeks. I'd much rather have these canned xml samples as external xml files rather than embedded in the code. </p>
<p>Anyone who's done much enterprise Java development has at one time or the other needed to load a resource from the classpath. It typically looks something like:</p>
<p>[sourcecode language="java"]<br />
String resourcePath = .....;<br />
InputStream is = Thread.currentThread().getContextClassLoader().getResourceAsStream(resourcePath);<br />
// Do something with the stream<br />
[/sourcecode]</p>
<p>Fortunately, Spring makes this quite a bit easier. You can just declare the resource that you need in your target bean:</p>
<p>[sourcecode language="java"]<br />
private Resource orderXmlResource;</p>
<p>public void setOrderXmlResource(Resource resource)<br />
{<br />
    this.orderXmlResource = resource;<br />
}<br />
[/sourcecode]</p>
<p>Then, in the bean config define it in the following way:</p>
<p>[sourcecode language="xml"]</p>
<property name="orderXmlResource" value="classpath:pathToYourSampleFiles/order.xml"/>
[/sourcecode]</p>
<p>Spring is smart enough to turn this <code>String</code> property into the appropriate resource type (<code>ClassPathResource</code>) and inject it into your bean.</p>
<p>Then, it is a simple matter of getting the xml as a <code>String</code>. With the help of <a href="http://commons.apache.org/io/">Commons-IO</a>, it's a one liner:</p>
<p>[sourcecode language="xml"]<br />
String orderXml = IOUtils.toString(orderXmlResource.getInputStream());<br />
[/sourcecode]</p>
<p>Now, isn't that much cleaner? I think so!</p>
<p>Cheers!</p>

<description><![CDATA[When I hear from a teacher or assistant at Collin&#8217;s school that Collin is having some &#8220;b]]></description>
<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When I hear from a teacher or assistant at Collin's school that Collin is having some "behavior" I have learned to find out exactly what that means. Collin is a well behaved child and we get a lot of cooperation from  his school. He is in First Grade and spends most of the day in Resource with about 8 other children...none of them autistic. Collin's school has a self contained autism class which he is not part of. I am grateful for the Resource class and the extra support and therapy he receives as I know many parents do not get this. BUT, when there is ever mention of "behavior" from one of Collin's teachers, I have immediately learned to find out what exactly the behavior is. When a child starts to exhibit "behavior", many times teachers and staff start to think, "well maybe he should not go to PE with typical class" or "well, maybe can not handle going to computer lab every Tuesday". SO, I find out what the behavior is, how many times it occurs, what preceded the incident, what followed, and to what degree of intensity it took place. I use a behavior checklist that I copy and send in his backpack. The teachers and staff are to fill it out and then we have real data to look at and help make a decision about what t do. Like I mentioned, Collin is well behaved so when "behavior" occurs it may seem more severe to teachers and staff than if it happened all the time. This behavior check list helps the teachers to see too, that it may not be as bad as they thought. This happened last year after Christmas Break. Collin had a rough start back into school after being at home for the two week break. I was getting notes that "Collin was having a rough day" or that "Collin was having behaviors and outbursts". Everyone was getting into a little bit of an uproar. I provided his teachers with a behavior checklist and had them log the number of occurrences, intensity, antecedent, and the teacher response. On paper, it really did not look that bad and the teachers recognized this. I had them log this information for two weeks and then we were going to come up with a behavior plan. There was not much behavior to correct after all and the sheet started to come home empty as the behavior went away. In general behavior does not change or go away unless you change something but I think Collin just needed time to get back into the swing of things. By not changing anything he soon realized, "OK, I am back in school and there is nothing I can do about it". He was fine by February and he really enjoyed his school year. I have added a copy of the behavior checklist I use which you can get at www.maximumpotentialkids.com in the data collection package or you could make your own.</p>

It is facilitated by the Washington State Department of Agriculture, and advised by a diverse board whose membership consists of governmental, food industry, and small farm interests statewide."</p>
<p>Heart of Washington focuses on supporting agriculture throughout the state. While there is no particular focus on small-scale or sustainable agriculture, Heart of Washington does emphasize the necessity and benefits of local economies. The project is primarily a resource for growers and retailers, supplying promotional and other supportive materials.</p>
<p>For eaters, the site does provide a calendar of what's in season (by season, not month) as well as listing grocers and restaurants that have made a commitment to utilizing Washington grown ingredients and products. There is a recipe section, but it is currently down.</p>

An internal memo cited quality issues as a reason for the termination of the project, and an EA spokesperson confirmed it. "It is with a heavy heart that I announce an end to all work on Tiberium effective immediately. I've consulted with Nick Earl and Frank Gibeau at the EA Games Label and together we have reached the conclusion that given the time and resources remaining, we will not be able to deliver this product to an appropriate level of quality. The game had fundamental design challenges from the start.
