Permanent Living in a Temporary Place

The problem with most apartments is that they make life seem too temporary. I am, after all, a renter? How much can you do with an apartment?

I am reminded of a segment from and old HBO show called, The Kids in the Hall and the particular segment was called ‘Bad Idea Jeans.” It’s an amusing setup with a bunch of guys just talking out in what looks like a park setting and they are talking about outrageously bad ideas as if they were the polar opposite.

What I remember most about the segment was when guy #1 gutting his kitchen and knocking out walls. Guy #2 says “you’re renting, right?” as if this was not a problem at all.

Bad Idea Jeans

Most apartment complexes will allow you to paint a place as long as you are willing to paint it back before you move out. Paint can do wonders for a place, but there are some things paint can fix. I have four such items in my apartment.

I have an electrical panel in the hallway. Why they didn’t put it in the laundry room, I will never know. It’s a poor location for it and painting it is only minimal camouflage. I will see it every time I walk past it so I have to think of something to go over it that will not rest directly on it, nor will it stick out too much, AND it has to match the theme I have, so I’m kinda stuck at the moment.

The next item is the fireplace. Its kind of trendy/simple so it fits everyone’s taste. But the mantle looks like a 4X10 piece of wood screwed into the wall. Very plain, very blah, very “I'm soo changing it” but I can’t be invasive of course. That’s the problem. I can’t remove it so I have to find a creative way of covering it without it looking as if I’m trying to cover it. I have some ideas. It will be one of my first projects. I’ll take pictures when I do it.

The third item is my sliding glass doors. This is lower on my list; they just annoy me and waste an entirely good wall to put stuff on. The vertical blinds make it look less classy than it could. I figure once I get the fireplace fixed. It will be easier to decide what to do with it.

The last item is the fluorescent bulbs on the kitchen ceiling. Again, I can’t remove it, but I can cover it to make it look less like I’m in a garage.

I picked up and entire pantone chart from Lowes hardware store and they said to bring it back when I’m done… there are a zillion colors to look over and I am perusing the some books for ideas and have gotten a few that I like. I’ll share them when I get a little time to take the ‘before’ pictures

La simpleza de lo compuesto...

No todo es fácil de explicar, a veces lo más simple nos complica la vida y lo enrevesado resulta esconder una naturalidad sencilla. Lo primero —como ya dije— no es fácil de explicar. La palabra AMOR, por ejemplo, es corriente —de hecho se utiliza demasiado, hasta el punto de estar tan trillada que resulta vacía— pero no por ello deja de ser algo difícil de expresar, sentir o comprender —lo segundo podría ser lo mas difícil—.

Por otro lado, la complejidad, lo compuesto, lo enrevesado, gustan. Nos sobrecoge el misterio, mientras mas rara es la composición de un verso mas veces lo leemos. Bucemos en sus palabras en busca de algo que alguien, en un pasado, haya dejado ahí para nosotros.

A mi, personalmente, me atraen los autores anónimos. No puedo evitar desplegar, alrededor de estos entes desconocidos, toda mi imaginación. Me gustaría ser ellos, para no ser nadie, para vivir en la sombra de esta realidad. Ser uno y dos, sin ser doce ni tampoco tres. Irme a la cama con la satisfacción de haber vivido, durante el día, una vida que no me pertenece, y despertar en una cama que no es la mía. Ser huésped y anfitrión en la misma casa.

Calderón de la Barca decía que en el mundo todos sueñan lo que son, pero entonces ¿también soy lo que sueño?—me pregunto yo—.

He decidido dejar de lado "Cordón de Plata", no es un abandono mas bien un lo haré cuando me considere más capacitado para terminarlo (siento que se me escapa de las manos).

En su lugar, estoy trabajando en un relato experimental al que le he puesto como titulo "Lluvias de Octubre". Voy a buen ritmo, pero es un relato corto tendrá pocas paginas.

Nouvelle traversée à Québec: Et pourquoi pas?

Pendant qu'à Montréal, on parle d'une solution pour le pont Champlain, qui se meurt des suites d'une surutilisation, du côté de la vieille capitale, le sujet d'une nouvelle traversée du fleuve n'est pas clos non plus. Il y a quelques mois de cela, j'ai écrit un billet au sujet d'un lecteur du quotidien Le Soleil, à Québec, qui réclamait la construction d'un tunnel, entre Québec et Lévis.

Parmi les commentaires reçus, celui de Stéphane Dumas, un lecteur, et commentateur, de longue date, du blogue de Richard3, qui me faisait remarquer, par l'entremise d'un lien vers Google Maps, que l'un des viaducs, de l'échangeur A-40/A-440, est suffisamment large pour permettre beaucoup plus de circulation qu'il ne le fait actuellement. En y jetant un oeil, on voit qu'il y a tout l'espace nécessaire pour y mettre trois voies! L'idée m'a donc pris, en ce lundi pluvieux, de faire comme d'autres blogueurs, et d'élaborer une théorie à partir de diverses vues obtenues via le logiciel Google Earth. Cela donnerait quelque chose comme ceci.

La ligne verte, ajoutée sur l'image, montrerait le trajet approximatif d'une telle traversée, depuis l'échangeur A-40/A-440 jusqu'à l'autoroute 20, en passant par l'île d'Orléans.

En regardant l'échangeur de plus près, on constate que quelques modifications seraient évidemment nécessaires. Entre autres, j'ai ajouté un agrandissement de la jetée, afin de permettre la construction de la bretelle vers la rive-sud, mais il faudrait probablement la modifier aussi, afin de construire des culées des deux ponts. Ceux-ci pourraient être simplement des ponts à poutres, tout ce qu'il y a de plus conventionnel, pour traverser les quelques deux kilomètres et demi qui séparent la rive nord du fleuve, et l'île d'Orléans. Il s'agira de construire quelques travées plus élevées, afin de permettre la navigation de plaisance.

La traversée de l'île d'Orléans comme tel serait dotée de quelques courbes, ce qui permettrait de trouver la ligne idéale, et ce sans recourir à des expropriations massives. Le pont qui relierait l'île à la rive sud, par contre, serait beaucoup plus élaboré que celui vers la rive nord, puisqu'il devra laisser suffisamment de dégagement pour la circulation des navires de la marine marchande, en plus de parcourir, lui aussi, une distance de plus de deux kilomètres. Il devra donc s'agir d'un pont à haubans, ou d'un pont suspendu, deux types de pont reconnus pour assurer de longues portées, ainsi que pour ajouter un aspect visuel saisissant, qui viendra se marier au paysage environnant.

Le tracé, sur la rive sud, comporterait certaines courbes, encore une fois, dans le but d'éviter des expropriations massives. Un viaduc d'importance viendrait traverser le boulevard de la Rive-Sud, tout près de l'intersection de celui-ci avec la rue Saint-Joseph, et la route Lallemand.

De là, l'autoroute viendrait se raccorder à l'A-20 en suivant ce qui semble être une ancienne emprise de chemin de fer.

Évidemment, un tel projet rencontrera beaucoup d'opposition.

D'abord, les insulaires ne voudront pas d'une autoroute qui traverserait leur île, et ce malgré qu'une telle infrastructure leur assurerait, en plus d'un lien plus fiable vers la rive nord du fleuve, un tout nouveau lien permanent vers la rive sud, ce qui ouvrirait des possibilités de développement à l'île. Mais voilà, les insulaires sont plutôt opposés à toute forme de développement massif. Ils jugent que ce genre de développement leur enlèverait la tranquillité qu'ils ont présentement.

Ensuite, il y a le projet Rabaska. C'est certain que le quai du futur port méthanier se retrouverait bien près du nouveau pont, ce qui impliquera certaines fermetures sporadiques, lors des manoeuvres des navires, et ce pour des raisons de sécurité. Encore faudrait-il que ces fermetures ne soient pas de trop longue durée, et surtout, qu'elles ne se produisent pas aux heures de pointe. Le cas échéant, une telle traversée deviendrait bien inutile.

Finalement, il ne faudra pas oublier nos chers "amis" environnementalistes, qui s'opposeront à ce projet, de la même façon qu'ils s'opposent à n'importe quel projet d'envergure.

Devant cela, l'option d'un tunnel sous le fleuve ne peut donc pas être rejetée du revers de la main. Par contre, les bretelles qui s'élançaient vers le cap Diamant ont été démantelées, et les cavernes déjà creusées ont été remises, ou sont sur le point de l'être, à Robert Lepage, afin d'en faire un espace de création artistique. Voilà une autre forme de subvention aux arts.

Ainsi, d'un côté comme de l'autre, la construction d'un nouveau lien inter-rives ne pourra faire autrement que se heurter à des coûts élevés. Mais la construction d'un tel lien devra avoir lieu, tôt ou tard. Et plus tôt que tard, à mon avis. Il est évident, toutefois, qu'une telle décision aura un poids politique énorme.

Starting Out In Business

here´s really nothing like owning your very own business, but many people aren´t sure how to get started. Starting your own business is actually fairly simple, though a lot of work. Having your own business means that you´ll be able to work your own hours and do what you are passionate about.

That doesn´t mean that being your own boss is all fun and games, it can also entail a lot of drudge work, but it really is worth it. You won´t have any limits as to the amount of money you can make or the hours worked. It´s completely up to you.

Coming Up with an Idea

Every good business needs a great idea to start with. You might have something in mind already, but even if you don´t, that´s fine. Start by writing down all your skills and talents, as well as other jobs that you´ve held. Each of these is something that you are good at and know you can do. Include hobbies and things that might otherwise seem non-profitable, like tennis or woodwork.

Now go through your list and eliminate everything that you really don´t enjoy doing. It´s pretty hard to make a business work if you hate what you´re doing, so make sure you enjoy what you’re doing!

The next step is to go through your remaining skills and list two or three business possibilities for each. For example, if you are skilled in something like “writing”, you could put down “freelancing”, “ebooks”, and “copywriting”. Cooking lends itself to catering, opening a restaurant, etc. Try to come up with at least a couple of ideas per skill.

Once you have all your ideas written out, you´ll want to choose three or so to work out a bit more. Choose ideas that you like and then start examining them to see if they would actually work for you. Some business ideas might sound great, but if there is already a lot of competition in the area, you might want to look at something else. Also, some ideas simply won´t be feasible in your area. If you live in a senior citizen residential community, chances are not many people will be looking for a children’s nursery, for example.

Making the Dream Come True

Starting your own business isn´t something you should just jump into. It takes a lot of research to make sure that there is a market for what you are offering and to find out what you need. Different areas will require different permits and licenses, so make sure you understand all the legal requirements and zoning (if you wish to work out of your home), before starting. You may even want to consult an attorney before getting into a business.

Financing is a huge part of starting up a business and even if you come up with a fairly low cost idea, some money will be required to get started. There are several ways to come up with this money. You may dig into your savings, or you might prefer to look for investors. A business loan is another way to go and many banks will allow you to finance your business in this way. Just make sure that your estimates are good and that you will be able to earn the money back in time to pay the loan off.

Make sure you allow enough time to work out a business plan, something that is handy not only for getting a loan, but also to keep you on track with your business as it grows. You can check back every so often to take a look at the business plan and see how you´re going. Then make the necessary adjustments to get the business back on track.

Running your own business will be the most exhilarating, frustrating and incredible thing you´ve ever done. It puts you in the unique position of being able to set your own lifestyle and to decide whether you want to keep it relatively small or make it a larger business with franchisees and spread out across the nation.

Simple Lunch - Creamed Mushrooms on Toast

Fresh Mushrooms, Field mushrooms if in season otherwise locally grown
butter
table salt & ground white pepper
plain flour
milk (I used Green top mmm..)

Slice mushroms and sautee in a little butter until soft and starting to turn golden brown, sprinkle with plain flour, salt & pepper, fry off for about a minute then add a little milk & stir, keep adding a little milk until sauce has reached your desired consistency. Toast & butter 2 slices fresh bread and pour creamed mushrooms over and enjoy....

I can't imagine moving around my yard, this state, or my house, without a camera. I have so much fun snapping shots of uniqueness; things that others, including myself, take for granted. I guess I have slowed down a bit to notice these temporary moments. With Autumn, the colors are stunning, vibrant and unusual; I call them "Comfort Colors". Sunflowers have always been my favorite flower. They make me smile and stand tall, like they do themselves. There is also a sense of calmness with the pictures I've taken below. Summer has ended...But Autumn has just begun! Enjoy!
