Having made the jump from Google and with a few days of using Live mail under my belt, I thought I

Having made the jump from Google and with a few days of using Live mail under my belt, I thought I'd explain here why I've discovered that Live mail is the better product.

Firstly, how Gmail is better than Live mail.

The free version of Gmail doesn't ever show you any annoying banner adverts. Okay so you get text adverts on the right of your browser screen but they're hardly what you could call distracting. To get rid of the adverts in Live mail you have to upgrade to the pro version at £15 a year.

The amount of storage you get with Gmail is significantly larger than the 5Gb you get with Live mail and there are tools to allow you the option to use the space for general backup, which you can't do with Live mail.

POP access just works in Gmail, you have to pay £15 a year for it with Live mail.

Google provide a nice piece of software I can run on my mobile to easily check my email. With Live mail I have to do it in a clunky browser and type my username and password every time. How old-fashioned!

Gmail isn't blocked by my, and many other I'm sure, company firewall like Live mail and Hotmail are, 'cos it's not so much of a target for crims.

But where Live mail excels.

The Outlook connector and the Windows Live Mail software work brilliantly and don't require you to pay the £15 a year POP premium! These packages also banish the banner ads you get with the webmail and don't store anything locally unless you specifically ask them to. Setup with them is as easy as typing in your email address and password, blissful compared to my clunky old Outlook setup.

With Gmail I had to use third-party software to sync my Calendar and Contacts, and I could never get it to work properly. Synchronisation of emails, calendar and contacts between the web and my local email software just 'happens' when I update something. This is seamless synchronisation the way it should be.

I can UPLOAD email to Live by dragging and dropping it into the appropriate folders in Outlook or Windows Live Mail. This means I can move up to the web useful archive emails like registration codes, serial numbers, tech support questions and important emails from family and friends. You can remove stuff from the web for local storage and archiving just as easily. This is arguably the most useful feature I've yet found.

I much prefer the three vertical pane, Outlook'esque view in Live mail to the rather old-fashioned Gmail view. It makes it much easier to read emails.

Live Calendar provides much easier ways to share and view your calendars on other devices and with more software than Gmail does.

In all Gmail does more, but what Live mail does it does it to the Microsoft mantra that 'it just works with a quick wizard' completely doing away with complicated setups. I do say that Gmail pop just works too, but it's WAY more complicated than using Outlook connector or Windows Live Mail where you just type your email address and password. If you already have a Hotmail or Live mail account I'd encourage you to try Windows Live Mail or Outlook Connector straight away.

I've also been playing with Skydrive on Live Spaces and Office Live, Microsoft's kind'a similar to Google Docs service, having already previously played with Live Mesh.

It absolutely baffles me that these are three seperate services! I'm sure Microsoft must be working on a way to integrate them all but come on guys, this is ridiculous as it stands. Also 5Gb is perfectly reasonable to offer as free storage but there's zero option to upgrade to more storage unlike Google which does offer an upgrade. Only Yahoo! come off worse with a paltry 30Mb... why are they even bothering?

So what's on my wish-list?

Windows Live Mail desperately needs Live Calendar integration. I could have put the lack of this down to Live Calendar still being in beta, but it's part of Outlook connector so what's the problem?

As stated before, Office Live, Skydrive and Mesh meet integrating badly and Microsoft need to offer more storage too.

Windows Live Mail lets me circumvent the firewall block at work and get full access to my email there. Hardly ideal 'cos I'm tied to a single PC but it's better than nothing. This is nothing to do with Microsoft, I just want want the company I work for to unblock Hotmail and Live mail. After all they offer unfettered access to Gmail and Yahoo! mail so what's the big deal guys?

Speaking of Windows Live Mail you might be wondering if I've switched to it from Outlook. I have, but for no better reason that after seven or eight years of using Outlook I fancied a change. Windows Live mail is also an extremely good and fully-featured mail package, way better than Yahoo! Zimbra Desktop that I used to use to access my Gmail at the office.

The original article that helped me choose Live mail can be found here.

A slight slip today when I advised a friend to go to froogle to check suppliers for a NAS drive for his PC. FRACK! as I might have said when I was young.

So how else are things going? I've been uploading photos to my Live Spaces photo gallery today, exploring the new services. I've not been able to upload anywhere near as many as I wanted to (you get a healthy 500 a month and unlimited storage) as the first time I uploaded a lot that weren't watermarked and had to delete them. I've now gotta wait 3½ weeks to upload the rest... FRACK!

I haven't been able to decide whether to stick with Outlook as my email client or switch to Live Mail. I like the chumminess of Live Mail after years with Outlook but where's the calendar support? I'm prepared to forgive this as Live Calendar is still in beta. I'm sure it's coming so I'll stick with Outlook for a while longer. There's also the small point that Google still doesn't offer ANY kind of calendaring service. Until this week I've been limited to checking my calendar at home only and printing out anything relevant for trips away.

It's funny but since doing all this dumping Google thing, I've begun to explore the web in ways I've not done before. Almost like I'm taking ownership of my own little part of it with a new photo gallery (let's face it, Flickr and Ringo were just mean on the total number of photos you could put online) and this blog.

If you wanna look in my public SkyDrive now though you'll find loads of useful documents I've uploaded from IT support stuff, including my Vista Power Users Guide, to last will and testament templates and my guides to putting a killer CV together... go nuts!

Okay, so it's not all been plain sailing so far. I've had to pay £15 for a year to get POP email access in Outlook on my PC, but you do get more stuff with like that advert removal and more email facilities yadda yadda yadda. I'm not sure it's all worth £15 a year but the cost isn't excessive in itself.

Hotmail at work is still blocked on the company firewall. I can get to a page where I can see subject headers in new mail but I can't read or send anything. That said we've just started teaching IT qualifications at work which require learners to be able to use email under exam conditions. It was an excellent opportunity to ask my boss to get the head of IT to unblock access to the site. After all there's unfettered access at work to Yahoo mail and a certain other one beginning with 'G' that I don't want to mention.

I've had a few "goo" moments in the last 24 hours where I find myself in IE or Firefox (I use both) typing this into the address bar only to realise I don't really want to do it and go to live or cuil instead. It's an autopilot thing and I suppose I'll get out of it shortly.

So day one, it cost me a little bit of dosh but I'm impressed so far. I like the vertical panes view of the hotmail web interface, I love the photo gallery uploader but you need better viewing options methinks and the only thing that disappoints me is that SkyDrive doesn't work like Live Mesh. I'm sure it's only a matter of time though and I suppose I should be grateful because most of the time Live Mesh barely works at all!

A couple of plus's straight away!! Virtual Earth (live maps) imported all my Google Earth locations perfectly and Live Writer gives me many more options for blogging. Looking good so far.

Grazie a Makeusof

Spazio a volonta' !

How to store your files online

Thanks to a growing range of services, it's now possible to keep all your personal digital information in the Internet "cloud", as they're calling it these days. Everything from documents and e-mails to photos and music can be stored -- often for free.

The benefits of storing your digital life this way are considerable. You're no longer tied to a particular computer or location, and you can access your data from any Internet-connected device.

There are a vast number of Internet-based storage services available and growing user demand is leading to some of the world's biggest IT companies offering more. Interest surged recently when Microsoft launched its SkyDrive service (see below) in more than 30 countries around the world, including Australia. Meanwhile there are strong rumours that Google is planning a similar service, likely to be called GDrive, that will offer masses of online storage space to anyone who wants it.

The Internet storage services we've chosen for this round-up can be divided into two categories: those intended primarily for storing and sharing files, and those designed specifically for backups. While some can be used for both, a quick check of their features will determine what they're best at delivering.

Microsoft SkyDrive
Storage capacity: 5GB | Cost: Free

SkyDrive is part of the growing range of services that form Microsoft's Live portfolio. Having been in beta for around 12 months, it was released to the public earlier this month.

It offers 5GB of password-protected storage, and is designed to be used as an extension to your computer-based storage. To access the service, you'll need to create a Live ID or use an existing Hotmail or Messenger ID. This becomes your identity when using SkyDrive as well as other Live services.

Once logged in, you're presented with a simple interface in which you can create folders in one of three categories: personal, shared or public. Personal folders can only be accessed by you, shared folders by friends or associates you approve, and public folders by anyone.

Uploading files is simple: you can either select them from a list, or install a small ActiveX control that allows them to be dragged and dropped onto a box on your screen. To retrieve a file, just click on its icon within the folder.

MediaFire
Storage capacity: Unlimited | Cost: Free

At first the MediaFire storage service seems too good to be true: unlimited storage space for free! Yet the company continues to power ahead, claiming to have more than 500,000 users around the globe. It's obviously following the strategy of building a following first and figuring out the money bit later.

Unlike other storage services, you can use MediaFire without registering. This is possible by the site storing a cookie on your computer, which not only means you're limited to accessing your stored files from that machine, but if you delete the cookie, you'll lose access to your files -- so take our advice and register for a free account!

While MediaFire offers unlimited storage space, it does enforce a 100MB limit per file. In practice this poses little problem, as the vast majority of files you'll want to store will be smaller than this. More annoying is that while you can upload up to 10 files at any one time, they must be individually selected -- which can make the job of storing large numbers of files quite tedious. In its favor is a slick interface, which provides an estimate of the time any uploads will take to complete, and the speed they're transferring at.

MediaFire doesn't have a restriction on the volume of uploads or downloads you can make each day, making it an attractive option for frequent sharers. Uploaded files can be password protected and stored in multiple folders as needed. You can also set certain folders to be accessible by friends, while keeping others personal.

Xdrive
Storage capacity: Up to 50GB | Cost: First 5GB for free, then $9.95 per month for up to 50GB

Operated by AOL, Xdrive offers a useful 5GB of free storage space. Should you need more, up to 50GB can be purchased for $9.95 a month, or $99.50 per year.

To use Xdrive you need to create an AOL username, and then an Xdrive account. Once in, the interface is clean and easily understood. Files can be uploaded by selecting them individually, or you can use the service's Java-based Accelerator Plus feature to upload multiple files simultaneously.

There's also an Xdrive Desktop Lite application that allows files to be dragged and dropped from any connected storage device directly to your Xdrive account.

Like some of the other online storage services, Xdrive allows you to share the contents of selected folders with other people. They can also be accessed and downloaded from any Internet-connected device.

Mozy Online Backup Home
Storage capacity: Unlimited | Cost: 2GB for free, unlimited for US$4.95 per month

Bought by storage equipment company EMC in November last year, Mozy has been a popular remote backup service since its launch in 2006. The company claims to have around 400,000 consumer and 10,000 business customers around the world.

Mozy offers both Home and Pro services. We used the Home service, which costs US$4.95 a month for as much space as required. There is a free service for those who like to try before they buy or have lesser needs, which offers a handy 2GB of space.

To use Mozy you'll first need to install an application. This tests your connection speed and then scans your hard drive, generating a recommended list of files that should be backed up, including e-mail, contact lists, documents and photos. Switching to expert mode allows you to add to or remove files from the recommended list.

Then you select when you want backups to occur: either a continuous mode where data is transferred whenever your computer is not busy, or you can specify a set time each day or week.

Once the initial upload of all files is complete (a process that can take many hours if you have a lot of files), Mozy continues to run in the background whenever your computer is turned on, monitoring for changes to files and adding them to your backup. Access to backed-up files is via a simple Web interface.

Box.net
Storage capacity: Up to 5GB (Individual plan) | Cost: 1GB for free, 5GB for $7.95 per month

Box.net is designed specifically for people looking to store files online and easily share them with family and work colleagues. It comes in Lite, Individual, Business and Enterprise flavours, each offering different storage capacities and price structures.

The Lite option provides 1GB of storage to which you can upload individual files of up to 10MB in size. There's also a 10GB per month bandwidth limit which covers both uploads and downloads. Choosing the US$7.95/month Individual option gives 5GB of storage and the ability to upload individual files of up to 1GB in size. There are no download or upload bandwidth limits.

Files can be uploaded individually or users can opt for the Java-based drag-and-drop feature that allows entire folders to be uploaded in a single action. Files can also be e-mailed directly to your Box.net account. This can be a handy way of keeping a copy of all e-mail attachments you send, by simply copying them to your box.net address at the same time.

You can also use the service to host photos and files used on blogs or services such as eBay. Simply upload the required files and then place the generated link on the appropriate page.

If you're on the go, Box.net also has a mobile access service. By calling up m.box.net on your mobile Internet device, you can access all your stored files.

This embodies the data flow between two devices in a server-client relationship

Notice: You should read this before you read below in order to know what you are reading about. I will be discussing the usage of Windows Live Foldershare and SkyDrive. Foldershare is a software that allows you to network with other computers via the Internet, facilitating encrypted transfer of files (think of the potential: share animes, musics, etc - even grab that powerpoint presentation you forgotten to bring from your home desktop to your laptop). SkyDrive is a browser based storage cloud which gives you up to 5GB of storage space on the net, and allows uploads of up to 50 mb (5 GB is alot for free software, normal file hosts would charge US$5 for 5GB lol). At this point, if you are already discombobulated from the jargon, please eat something strawberry related to rejuvenate yourself =)

Although it might take less insightful individuals a while to realise that technology is scary (therefore Novea is an insightful individual), even a blockhead would realise the disastrous dangers a slight mistake could precipitate given sufficient administrative rights and a definitive demonstration. Today, I surfed to many places on the Internet in a bid to find a suitable and idiot-friendly VPN (short for Virtual Private Network) software which would allow me to distribute and share porn files with my peers under encryption so that Big Brother wouldn't be able to tap into our network. As a big advocate of open-source software, I first pinged upon the usual providers but it seems you need to possess a geek-like level of computer wizardry to establish even the rudiments of a TCP/IP network protocol, not to say a fully functional VPN. In despair, I drowned myself in the depths of the Internet and met the evil entity known as "Microsoft".

Ok, bear with me, I know half of you are going into standby mode at all the network jargon of VPN, TCP/IP, intranet, star topology, blah blah, but hang on, more pictures are coming up!

Microsoft, the company responsible for your computer crashes one of the two companies at the forefront of Web 2.0, is the dominion of computer operating systems and hegemony of many user based software, like Live Messenger, Word, Access, etc. Because of its huge influence, Microsoft is widely criticised for hoarding a monopoly in the computing sector. That's why it's evil - to other companies/competitors that is. But for individuals like us, Microsoft is a god-send in providing us with essential services that are useful, efficient and free - discounting its OS of course.

Foldershare is is a free-to-use application brought by Microsoft from ByteTaxi Inc. on November 3, 2005, and made part of their Windows Live range of services.

Installation is a quick and painless process - you download an extremely small 1 MB package from the website and install it. Voila! You are now VPN enabled. Then, you follow some simple steps to create an account - using your email address and your password (I think it's possible to give a different password) and Bravo! your computer is now ready to be be part of your own private intranet. (Note the small icon at the bottom right of your screen/taskbar). Right click on the icon. This will be where you access the folders shared between you and your peers. At the moment it's empty because you haven't established any yet. Click the bold link to the Foldershare website instead, and you will get the screen below

See my account email address? Feel free to add me to any of your networks=)

Personal libraries - If you have downloaded the Foldershare software on multiple machines, say your home desktop and your laptop, you can turn the home computer into a server by synchronizing a folder each from the two computer. That means that whatever changes you make to your home desktop (etc, adding a file) will be reflected in the synchronized folder in your laptop. If you want to micromanage, you could select Manual Synchronization, where the files and subfolders in the synchronized folder will show up as small 1kb listings from which you can choose what to download.

Shared libraries - Same as personal library, except that it is between other accounts

Remote access - This is a cool feature which lets you access everything in the machine of yours. Just click and download. Examples below

We are now going to explore my D:\ drive

Gasp! Omg, my privacy is at stake here!

Now, how do you add members to your VPN? First, click "Create a shared library" at the webpage and follow the instructions to make a shared folder. Then, all you have to do is to add the email address of those people you want to set up a network with. It's that easy!

As you can see, there are many permission levels you can allow a person to access.

Readers can view but can't add or change files in the library.

Contributors can view and add files, but cannot change or delete anything.

Editors can view, add, change, and delete files in the library.

Senior editors can do everything that editors can do, plus they can change library permissions.

A caveat though, I suggest you DO NOT set anyone's permission level beyond Contributor. When I first set up a VPN with my computing classmate, with him as the server and me as the client (Editor level), after downloading a file to sample, I deleted it because it takes up space. Guess what? The same file in HIS computer got deleted too. When I went to my recycle bin and restored it, the file was also restored at his side. Scary isn't it?

After you click Next, you will be led to a page to send an email to the person you wish to share the folder with. The person will then receive the message, either through his inbox, or more quickly, through the message pop-up from the icon at his taskbar. To accept the invitation, you would have to go to the Foldershare website, click on the name of the VPN folder, select your computer and choose a matching folder in your computer to synchronize with. I suggest you create a new folder for the purpose. This is a one time only process, the next time you want to access the network, you right click on the taskbar icon and choose the folder from there.

Ok, that's all for Foldershare. I think there is no need for me to write a guide to SkyDrive because it is so intuitive. Oh, and by the way, this post was written offline on Windows Live Writer - I merely clicked Publish to have my words, pictures and all uploaded to the wordpress.com server when I am online again. Cool eh?

Microsoft’un ücretsiz 5 GB dosya depolama alanı sunduğu, SkyDrive servisi sonunda “b

Microsoft'un ücretsiz 5 GB dosya depolama alanı sunduğu, SkyDrive servisi sonunda "beta" aşamasından çıktı. Ayrıca Türkiye dahil 35 ülkede hizmet vermeye başladı.

Windows Live SkyDrive oturumu açtığınızda kontrol sizdedir. Parola korumalı çevrimiçi dosya deposu. Her yerde ve her zaman kullanıma hazır. Oluşturduğunuz her klasör için, klasöre kimlerin erişebileceğini seçebilirsiniz. İstediğiniz zaman yeni klasör ekleyin, klasörleri yeniden adlandırın veya kimlerin erişebileceğini değiştirin.

Her zaman gerek duyduğunuz yerde:
