[/caption]

Recently I encountered a problem with my machine running Vista 64bit Ultimate and freezing completely upon running skype. This happens with nearly all version of Skype (I say nearly, because I haven't had time to try every single version of Skype, but at least for the latest 3.8 and 4.0 beta 2 at the time of posting).

This has baffled me for around about 3 days, until I suddenly remembered a setting which I modifed while trying to install an unsigned driver.

The command was:

C:\>bcdedit -debug [on/off]

When the debug is ON, Skype will freeze and will NOT function properly. The logical solution is to turn this setting off and reboot afterwards before launching Skype:

C:\>bcdedit -debug off

You can check (to make sure) whether the debug setting is on or off by just typing:

C:\>bcdedit

This will present you with a list of settings and their values, the debug setting should be listed last.

FYI this is my system specifications:

HP Pavilliion dv9700

Vista Ultimate 64bit SP1

4GB Ram (2x2gb)

GeForce 8600GS

Hope this helps soneone out there, I certainly wished someone posted about this when I had the problem, that would save me a whole 3 days!! :)

Even Office, Microsoft's cash cow, is under attack from free and open source rivals.

So has Ballmer inherited a poisoned chalice? Has Microsoft lost it? And if it has, can it find it again? Read the full story on TechRadar.Com

The ongoing shunning of Vista is even more surprising given that its predecessor -- Windows XP -- is, for the most part, no longer even on the market.

The latest organization likely to forgo Vista? The state of Maine. Read the full story on InformationWeek.Com

IT departments are largely ignoring Vista. In June (18 months after Vista's launch), Forrester Research reported that just 8.8% of enterprise PCs worldwide were running Vista. Meanwhile, Microsoft appears to have put Windows 7 on an accelerated schedule that could see it released in 2010. That will provide IT departments with all the justification they need to simply skip Vista and wait to eventually standardize on Windows 7 as the next OS for business.

So how did Vista get left holding the bag? Let's look at the five most important reasons why Vista failed. Read the full story on Between The Lines

The Register reported on October 2 that Microsoft was going to extend again the date until which PC makers would be allowed to continue to offer Windows users "downgrade rights," enabling them to switch from Vista to XP on new machines. The Reg said Microsoft had moved the downgrade cut-off date from January 31, 2009 to July 31, 2009.

According to Devil Mountain Software Inc., which operates a community-based testing network, nearly 35% of the 3,000-plus PCs it examined had been downgraded from Vista to XP.

"Either these machines were downgraded by [sellers like] Dell or HP, or they were downgraded by the user after they got the machine," said Craig Barth, chief technology officer at Devil Mountain. "In any case, these machines are no longer running Vista." Read the full story on ComputerWorld.Com

Eighteen months after your debut, you simply don't have an aura of success about you. Worse, your aging predecessor, Windows XP, has unexpectedly gained armies of devotees who refuse to give it up. It's a pretty sad state of affairs-your original marketing tagline may have been "The Wow Starts Now," but many people remain steadfastly unwowed.

The idea behind Microsoft's Mojave Experiment was to suggest that those who spurn you do so out of ignorance. It's true that some Vista doubters base their distaste on what they've heard about you rather than hands-on experience. But I don't know of anyone outside of Redmond who'd maintain that long-term exposure to you turns the average computer user into a raving fan. Sure, you're better than you were when you first showed up, thanks to Service Pack 1 and improved compatibility with applications and peripherals. But I've talked to lots of people who have used you for many months, and while some of them are pleased with you there are plenty whose feelings range from ennui to anger." Read the full article at technologizer.com

Ara hauria d'estar funcionant.

Si... evident, it huffed and it puffed and it then it failed.

Sau macar in somn.

Daca n-are ntoskrnl nu vrea dom'le!

S-a reparat si ras-reparat si tot stricat a ramas.

ArcGIS 9.3 Service Pack 1 is planned to be available for download later this year in November 2008. These issues are targeted for 9.3 SP1. ESRI will be updating this list periodically with additions and other changes.

There were several bugs reported and enhancements suggested by many.

For detailed list of bugs click the below link

http://downloads2.esri.com/support/downloads/ao_/ArcGIS_9_3_SP1_Announcement.pdf

ESRI note is much astonishing to me:

"Both the following list and the availability of targeted service packs are subject to change at any time without notice. Users should plan accordingly and, if advisable, wait for the release of a given service pack prior to making commitments."

Does the ESRI is not confident of fixing these bugs or its statutory warning to its product users?

"The custom tool 'MSLinqToSQLGenerator' failed while processing the file 'App_Code\PrescripcionModel.dbml'"

Got a pirated copy of XP? Expect to be nagged

When Windows Vista was first introduced, it came with a powerful defense against pirating. In fact,

When Windows Vista was first introduced, it came with a powerful defense against pirating. In fact, it was so powerful that paying customers complained when it malfunctioned, and Microsoft wound up making some big changes.

Unless Vista was properly activated, it would drop into "reduced functionality mode", in which the only thing you could do with it was access the Internet in order to complete online activation -- or buy a valid product key.

In Service Pack 1, the behavior was changed so that the operating system would still operate, but the background turned black and nagging boxes warned you that you "might be a victim of software piracy".

Now, Microsoft is going to bring this "feature" to Windows XP Professional with a new version of the Windows Genuine Advantage. From the WGA blog:

With this update to WGA Notifications in Windows XP, we've implemented a couple of related features that draw on the notifications experience we designed for Windows Vista SP1. After installing this version of WGA Notifications on a copy of Windows XP that fails the validation, most users will discover on their next logon that their desktop has changed to a plain black background from whatever was there previously.

The desktop background can be reset to anything else in the usual ways, but every 60 minutes it will change back to the plain black background. This will continue to happen until that copy of Windows is genuine.

Also, the user will see the addition of what we call the "persistent desktop notification." This notification is similar to a watermark but works a bit differently. The image appears over the system tray and is non-interactive in the sense that you can't click on it or do anything to it.

This update will come only to XP Pro users, since Microsoft says that's the most-pirated version of XP. If you use XP Home or Media Center Edition, you won't get this new release of WGA. It will take several months before all XP Pro users have the new WGA.

Blog author Alex Kochis claims this is something XP users actually want:

. . . Our research has clearly shown that customers value the ability of Windows to alert them when they may have software that is not genuine, but they also want the ability to stay up to date with the least effort required on their part. . . .

OK, Alex, if you say so . . .

While I don't think users of activated, valid copies of XP Pro will care much about this, it could become an issue if WGA malfunctions, as it has in the past. If Microsoft's WGA servers mistakenly report a valid copy as being not genuine, XP Pro users aren't likely to "value" this feature all that much.

Microsoft is to tweak WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) Notifications on Windows XP to make it behave

Microsoft is to tweak WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) Notifications on Windows XP to make it behave more like WGA on Vista.

Here’s what this latest update brings to WGA for Windows XP:

First off, it improves the detection abilities of WGA and hopes to further reduce the risk of false-positive identifications (which is good)

WGA Notifications now allows you to use the system even if flagged as non-genuine (for 30 Days).

This update will be offered to the most pirated version of Windows XP - the pro version.
This update will be delivered via Windows Update.
Update: Microsoft is expecting the rollout to take several months.

The new WGA notifications, which Microsoft will deliver via Windows Update, will behave like the WGA notifications introduced with Windows Vista Service Pack (SP) 1 back in December 2007. Specifically, users whose XP copies are deemed “non-Genuine” will see their screen backgrounds default to black and notice a translucent notice, warning them that their Windows might be counterfeit.
