Are we really happy here
With this lonely game we play
Looking for words to say?
Searching
But not finding understanding anyway
We're lost in a mas--masquerade

Both afraid to say
We're just too far away
From being close together from the start
We tried to talk it over
But the words got in the way
We're lost inside this lonely game we play

Thoughts of leaving disappear
Ev'ry time I see your eyes
No matter how hard I try
To understand the reasons
That we carry on this way
We're lost in this masquerade

From being close together from the start
We tried to talk it over
But the words got in the way

This week, I won't be covering a local band, but they are playing locally at the Masquerade. Tomorrow, Suburban Legends is here in Atlanta. I love some ska, so I'm excited about this show. If you love ska, too, go ahead and skank on out to the show. It's their Summer Crush Tour for their new album "Infectious."

In other ska related news, The Voodoo Glow Skulls will be here on the 26th. Unfortuately, they'll be playing at Swayze's. If you're over 17, you might be mistaken for one to the parents of so many teenagers waiting for the show to end. If you're under 17, then this is the place for you cuz it's one of the last 18 and under venues in Atlanta. The venue sucks, but the band is skatastic. The Dollyrots are even playing there the next day. Damn you Swayze's!

Elevado, part 2 is coming up, too. My class has the video interview with them on Wednesday at ISP

This is next month, but get your tickets now cuz the Dropkick Murphys are coming to fuck shit up on September 27th. They'll be at the Maquerade, but tickets might sell out quick and this is a show that no punk or drunken Irishman wants to miss.

i went to the masquerade last night. i haven't been up there in a quick minute, and i felt like dancing my lil fanny off til the sun don't shine. its also my favorite place where i get to practice my impeccably pious judging abilities.

if you go there as much as i do, you quickly learn that there are generally 3 groups of people: regular ol' shmucks (like me), gothic/scenesters, and 18-year olds.

the regular ol shmucks go to dance and hang out with the other regular ol' shmucks who also pathetically go there just as much, enough that we've fostered a friendship and continue the practice of shmuckiness at other clubs (coincidentally the same ones on the same nights) during the rest of the week.

the goth/scene kids used to fascinated me, then annoy me, and now i just don't really care. it amazed me how much these kids put into their image...all just for 80s night. I can maybe understand putting all that crap on for a show, or even for some other trendy-but-not-too-trendy club. but this is the Masquerade. people are dancing and all you are doing is standing around outside the entrance so people who are walking in can see your badass mowhawk and hardcore tattoos and a getup that resembles the look of Michael Jackson in his "Bad" video, all while pretentiously looking at the non-goth/scene kids who aren't as "rad" as you and probably--*gasp*--listen to the "deplorable drain on society" that is mainstream radio (but i know you secretly still listen to your Linkin Park cd's. you're not fooling me...no siree).

next comes the 18 year olds...my favorite category, essentially the group that puts that little something special--that little twinkle and sparkle--into 80s night. 18 year olds are so complex and their social network so intricate that they deserve sub-categories. these consist of freshly gay guys, the newcomers, and the attention starved hoochie babies.

whenever i need a break from dancing, i pause to observe endearingly at the gay 18 year olds (who just went off to college and are beyond their parents lethal grasp and be free to be who they really are) awkwardly making out and dry humping to Lil' John. its adorable. really, it is. i'm being serious. i'm glad they found somewhere where they could do whatever the fuck they want in an environment that supports--not discourages--their homosexuality. more power to them.

ahhhh the newcomers...the 18 year olds who just turned 18 and FINALLY can abandon the movie theater and Taco Bell parking lot for more "adult" activities. you can always tell when its their first night there...they think people actually get dressed up for 80s night and come all crazy decked out in 80s clothes, complete with scrunchies and leggings...no stir-ups, though :( i really want to go up to them and ask them "do you feel really stupid for wearing all that? because i feel stupid just looking at you. at least take down the side ponytail, for christ's sake. we all know you feel like a tool, stop trying to front like you're proud to be wearing neon bike shorts and tacky high heels." that, however, would be mean. i also thinks its funny to see them react to being in a club with a bar for the first time. you can tell they are both excited and nervous at the same. just like a virgin boy who's about to get laid...precious.

and that brings us to our finally group. the, and i quote, "attention starved hoochie babies." these girls are young. they might even 16 and using their older sister's ID. these are the girls that come in some ridiculously sexy outfit (last night it was a black microdress, fishnets, and white knee-high boots), yet still managing to convey that you are absolutely 100% illegal (pigtails and an extra burst of excitement when Britney Spears comes on). they're the girls who everyone is standing back and watching her <strike>dance</strike> grind everyone/thing in the room. it kinda breaks my heart to see these girls, dancing with these guys whose faces say "this bitch is DEFINITELY giving me head tonight!", while she naively thinks that everyone is admiring her confidence and skill (but in the back of her head is still really really ashamed of herself). i can't decide if being drunk makes it any better or any worse. better because you can chalk it up to being drunk, worse because its probably intensifying the slutty behavior she emits when she is sober. i have to admit, i watch them with a tinge of shame myself, because i know that that was me at 15, dancing in Zane Miller's house with some really fat gross guy and him pouring beer all over my hair, while all the senior girls look at me the exact way i look at the girls at the masquerade. i hope they snap out of it faster than i did...
