Bands are like buses.

You wait months for a good one to play live then two come along at once.

Add to the perils of internet shopping buying tickets for concerts on the same night. A likely event if you rush on the heads-up start the excellent www.tourfilter.com gives you with it’s early warning announcement service.

Yes, I have tickets for both The Thievery Corporation and Spiritualized. No, I can’t multiverse to both gigs.

But thanks to the joys of technology you can now witness what hearing both groups playing at once would sound like. An aside to any lawyers, if it offends I’ll remove.

PS What’s with venues stating a curfew time, have we all got ASBOs now?

Just received the new Thievery Corporation CD - "Radio Retaliation." I've only had one chance to breeze through the first few songs, but my review of this product doesn't even get that far.

The packaging for this CD was absolutely horrible. I'm not sure who thought of this, but I hope this is not a sign of CD packaging to come.

The outside is a piece of corrogated cardboard which forms a sleeve that is layed out portrait, versus the normal landscape CD design. And, it's huge. This packaging will not fit on the shelf with your other CDs.

Extremely loosely placed inside the corrugated sleeve is a mini-poster folded down somewhat into normal liner note size. It's two-sided, and contains lyrics for all the songs on the CD. Nowhere on it is an actual song list with track times or any other information. There is no snug fit to the folded poster, and it falls out every time you pick up the package.

Just as loosely inside the folded poster is the CD itself, which also falls out of both the cardboard and the folded poster upon pickup.

Basically, it's a stack of loose paper with a CD buried somewhere within.

I'm not sure who thought this was a good idea, but I'm hoping it's not the future of CD packaging because it could barely be less functional or practical.

Here's the song "Radio Retaliation" from the album of same name. The photo you see in the video is exactly the layout of the front of the corrugated box/sleeve.

The roster includes, to quote their press, "Nigeria's afro-beat heir Femi Kuti, Brazilian star vocalist and guitarist Seu Jorge, Indian sitar virtuoso Anushka Shankar, Slovakian chanteuse and violinist Jana Andevska, and Washington D.C.'s own go-go originator Chuck Brown." The results are mostly good and often great, though, no doubt owing to the broad range of their musical collaborations, Radio Retaliation sometimes loses a sense of cohesiveness and stops seeming like a Thievery Corporation record. Nevertheless, enough of their trademark masterful blend of electronica, downtempo, dub, jazz, lounge and world music elements can be heard here to make this rank as a good, if not great Thievery Corporation release. Standout cuts: "Radio Retaliation," "Vampires," "Beautiful Drug" and "La Femme Parallel."

So I've recently gotten into Thievery Corporation and all music of that similar sound and genre. I was cruising the itunes Top Tens, saw a bunch of Thievery Corporation songs in the Electronic Top Ten, and my interest was piqued.

Thanks to the wonders of Pandora, my station based on Thievery Corporation is my new favorite thing. It's such a mellow sound, which gives a nice balance to my usual up-tempo, pop-loving side. The station is also seeded with Bitter:Sweet, Imogen Heap, Jem, Zero 7, and Massive Attack. Check it out: Ice Lounge. Oh, and get a Pandora account if you don't already have one.

Album: Radio Retaliation

Rating: ★★★★½ (85 out of 100)

Review: A good trip-hop album seems to have a formula. First, assemble an eclectic mix of vocalists and collaborators to help contribute to the world feel of the album. Second, make sure to revisit most of the contributing genres including acoustic, lounge, acid jazz, house, soul, world, reggae, dub, etc. The D.C.-based duo that is Thievery Corporation release their fifth studio album with "Radio Retaliation", an album that succeeds admirably by following the formula. The first track Sound The Alarm immediately reflects the reggae/dub influence. The other reggae infused song is the title track Radio Retaliation, which is currently available as a free download from Amazon.com. Mandala is an Eastern, Indian-style track that has an almost Lebanese Blonde feel to it. El Pueblo Unido sounds like it would be completely at-home in Miami on South-Beach sipping a mohito. (The Forgotten People) is one of the more classic trip-hop tracks on the album, reminiscent of Tricky's style of down-tempo. 33 Degree and Sweet Ideas exemplify the lounge spirit of Thievery Corporation's music. If you're a fan of UK house or world down-tempo such as Leftfield, check out Blasting Through The City. La Femme Parallel is one of those French-style coffee house trip-hop joints that invites you to sip some latte and enjoy a cigarillo. The entire album has a really nice flow to it which is often the Achilles heal of down-tempo music when attempting to cross as many musical boundaries as TC has attempted here. The list of collaborators includes Femi Kuti, Seu Jorge, Anushka Shankar, Jana Andevska, Chuck Brown, Sleepy Wonder, LouLou, Notch, Zee, Verny Varela and others. "Radio Retaliation" is a gem amidst a shadowed genre kept alive by artists such as Thievery Corporation, Tricky, Zero 7, Portishead, Leftfield, Radiohead, Massive Attack and others. Check it out!

Just in case you forgot who ran this city, Eric & Rob dropped a new album yesterday. From the website -

Thievery Corporation once again raises the bar with their incendiary and eagerly anticipated fifth independent studio album Radio Retaliation. Along with longtime microphone co-conspirators like Sleepy Wonder, Lou Lou, and Notch the outernational DJ and production duo are joined this time by a new cast of musical collaborators including Nigeria's afro-beat heir Femi Kuti, Brazilian star vocalist and guitarist Seu Jorge, Indian sitar virtuoso Anushka Shankar, Slovakian chanteuse and violinist Jana Andevska, and Washington DC's own godfather of go-go Chuck Brown. With an uncompromising socio-political agenda and richly layered production touching upon the eclectic sounds of Jamaica, Latin America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East, Radio Retaliation is Thievery Corporation's broadest and most progressive album yet! Available now in fine record stores, iTunes, and on ESL Music's webshop.

Live set, just to get you in the mood...The true District Creatives, Thievery Corporation.

Gratuitous Christina Aguilera shot...just because I can...and she has a new single out that you can't buy yet!

Well THIS is quite the week for music! There was SO much stuff, I had to go back for seconds! Here is a good selection of music to choose from!

Echo Jet - "Wave"
I am such a sucker for great pop rock...and this song could have easily been made by Bryan Adams!

Blitzen Trapper - "War On Machines"
Originally released back in 2000, this album sounded pretty good! I downloaded 3 songs off it, but this is my favorite. A little feedback in the middle just to wake you up!

Cold War Kids - "I've Seen Enough"
I like the sound of this band. Kind of like Remy Zero with more spunk. Good alternative rock!

Little Jackie - "The Stoop"
Nice little freebie with a summer feel. Poppy Bee-bop along and doesn't cost you a thing! (At least, for the next 6 days)

Thievery Corporation - "The Shining Path"
This electronica band is one of the genres most popular! This instrumental is a nice addition to their regular style of work, however there are a lot of songs on the disk that range in style from blues to rock. Go check out ""Radio Retaliation" yourself and pick and choose!

Stero MC's - "Black Gold"
Remember the hit song "Connected" from the early 90's? Well, this band really never went away, they just hadn't done anything notable for a long time (in my opinion). Well...now they're back and this song is really catchy. I hope it hits big!

Kanye West - "Love Lockdown"
Apparently Kanye's been hanging with Lil Wayne because he goes craazy with the voicebox on this one. I still like it!

Kings Of Leon - The entire album of "Only By The Night"
My album of the week! This album just ROCKS! So many to choose from...here are my picks off the album (which I went and bought at Best Buy)..."Sex On Fire", "Crawl" or "Use Somebody"

TV On The Radio - "DLZ"
One of the more interesting alternative bands out there. For some, they might be a little too much. They use such a wide variety of styles and it's never a given where they might go. This song is the poppiest of the bunch and has a Modest Mouse feel to it.

Has anyone heard the new Christina Aguilera single? It's called "Keeps Getting Better" and it doesn't appear to be available off ITunes yet. If you want to hear it...go HERE. For the record, it's an average song from an artist that I usually expect more of. She's got such a fantastic voice, but it sounds like she hired Madonna's producer to over-do the production and she sounds like any old run-of-the-mill pop singer on this track. Here's hoping she hasn't gone and overdubbed everything on her next album!

So there ya go! So much music, so little time. But these are my pick songs of the week!

Their music style is dub, acid jazz, Indian classical and Brazilian (such as bossa nova), fused together with a lounge aesthetic. They formed in the summer of 1995 at D.C.’s Eighteenth Street Lounge that Hilton co-owns. With their new album, Radio Retaliation, Thievery Corporation continues to deliver strong political messages with a finesse that washes the words down smoother than premium tequila...regardless of your personal beliefs. Garza says the project is a "more overt political statement," with Hilton adding that it's "about an exodus of conscious people who are willing to acknowledge something is wrong with the 'official version' of news and culture." As an added bonus, those conscious people get to party to chilled grooves as addictive as they are diverse. Among the album's guests are world music all-stars Seu Jorge, Femi Kuti, Anushka Shankar and Jana Andevska, as well as music pioneer Chuck Brown. Check out Vampires,(featuring Femi Kuti) and Hare Krishna (featuring Seu Jorge). Thievery Corporation will launch an international tour in Greece on October 10.

Oh, Tobacco. I am really excited about his new album Fucked Up Friends for maaany reasons: 1) Mr. Tobacco himself has done a lot of work with Black Moth Super Rainbow, a band that is particularly mind slaying. 2) He recorded this album in rural Pennsylvania using only analog instruments and a tape machine. 3) Its sound is very refreshing and far-removed from all of the empty, Justice-y computer generated craziness that is bombarding us these days. 4) It just downright rules.

Thievery Corporation's latest album Radio Retaliation features the group's long time cast of musicians and collaborators, however this time around they've got some worldly new additions on board. Nigeria's Femi Kuti throws down some afro-beat loveliness, Brazil's Seu George (remember him in The Life Aquatic?) lends his singing/songwriting abilities, and Indian sitar master Anushka Shankar really shreds. (I love sitars.)

[audio http://sq.txdnl.com/mwt/t/o/e/t/toetaps/playlists/187020/1767736.mp3]Thievery Corporation - Mandala [MP3][Insound]

Lastly, Seattle/Brooklyn/Japan's own PWRFL Power writes lovely little ditties about brushing your teeth and teaching his lady how to use chopsticks. Pretty adorable, lo-fi acoustic sounds generate from this dude who is also a member of Cop Killahz. Additionally, he is currently on tour with Grampall Jookabox and will be playing TONIGHT at the Billiken Club with Grampall and Pattern Is Movement. I'm thrilled.

Also, zi

Also, ziceam că o să continui, însă lenea m-a cam împiedicat.

Moving on. Thievery Corporation.

Aşa-i Casandra? Heeeeere's Will:

Na. Zi şi tu. Dacă asta nu e supradoză, I don't know what is. Aşteptăm cu nerăbdare luna decembrie. :))

Given the current chaos in the music industry, bands must find new ways to promote their music. From

Given the current chaos in the music industry, bands must find new ways to promote their music. From musicians using Twitter to connect with fans or partnering with brands to cross promote, we are seeing more and more examples of non-traditional music promotion and distribution. The artists who are willing to take risks and think outside the box, with their art and with their careers, are the ones we here at Evolving Music are most interested in.

One such band is Thievery Corporation. In addition to being a refreshingly unique group that fuses together a plethora of genres and cultural sounds, they are not afraid to speak their minds. Sure, everyone likes a good mindless "bump 'n' grind" tune from time to time, but you gotta respect the artists who choose to use their music not just as entertainment, but as a way to communicate what they believe and are passionate about (as we've covered in previous posts about artists such as Immortal Technique and Bataka Squad.)

The DJ duo, comprised of Rob Garza and Eric Hilton, hails from Washington DC, which "has long been the home of a music subculture legendary for fierce independence, a staunch do-it-yourself work ethic, and conscientious social activism." They definitely practice what they preach. The organic multi-cultural sounds of dub, reggae, lounge, afrobeat and Indian music, to name a few, may catch your attention at first if you hear Thievery's music at a neighborhood cafe or in a European nightclub. But, their uninhibited socio-political messages and passionate desire to open hearts and minds will keep you riveted.

Additionally, their diverse team of collaborators - singing in numerous languages, playing funky instruments, and each adding their own cultural thread to the musical quilt - give the band a truly unique sound. Not to mention their live shows, which can be pretty freakin amazing.

Their upcoming album, Radio Retaliation, purportedly takes their politicizing to a new level. According to Rob, "There's no excuse for not speaking out at this point, with the suspension of habeas corpus, outsourced torture, illegal wars of aggression, fuel, food, and economic crises. It's hard to close your eyes and sleep while the world is burning around you. If you are an artist, this is the most essential time to speak up."

If you are on Facebook or iLike you'll be able to stream Thievery Corporation's new album on September 19th, before its official release on September 23rd. This is the first time the two social networking giants have ever worked together to promote an album.

Given that this album is particularly focused on the band's disgust with the current state of American media, their decision to skip the middle man and go straight to their fans via the internet is appropriate, both for them personally and for the industry as a whole. According to Hilton, "We chose iLike as the platform to debut this record because it offers us a direct vehicle to share our music and communicate with fans worldwide, free from editorializing or whitewashing of our messages."

For the fans among you, or those interested in gaining further insight into the artists and their message, keep your eyes out for a series of videos in which they introduce and discuss the album, which will be available exclusively on iLike. In the meantime, check out the title track on their MySpace.

To quote Rob Garza once more, "... if you can get people to question the things around them, just a little, then that's not such a bad thing."

On that note, here's the title track from their 2002 "Richest Man in Babylon" album:

Well it is about time. DCs Worldly duo Thievery Corporation returns with a new album entitled Radio Retaliation (due out September 23rd). This will be their 5th studio album. This album will have whole bunch of new collaborators including DC Go Go legend Chuck Brown!!!

"Radio Retaliation is definitely a more overt political statement," says Garza of Thievery Corporation. "There’s no excuse for not speaking out at this point, with the suspension of habeas corpus, outsourced torture, illegal wars of aggression, fuel, food, and economic crises. It’s hard to close your eyes and sleep while the world is burning around you. If you are an artist, this is the most essential time to speak up."

"Apart from a few independent bastions, there is no musical or informational freedom on the US airwaves anymore. They’ve been bought up, consolidated and homogenized. Radio Retaliation is about an exodus of conscious people who are willing to acknowledge something is wrong with the ‘official version’ in news and culture," explains Hilton.

With Radio Retaliation Thievery Corporation raise the bar with a new cast of musical collaborators including; Nigeria’s afro-beat heir Femi Kuti, Brazilian star vocalist and guitarist Seu Jorge, Indian sitar virtuoso Anushka Shankar, Slovakian chanteuse and violinist Jana Andevska, and Washington DC’s own go-go originator Chuck Brown. Also returning are long time co-conspirators Sleepy Wonder, LouLou, Notch, Zee, and Verny Varela.

WOW! Today I was going to post some mash up music that is still hot as hell when you drop it! I am hungover today and can't deal with listening to club music when all I want to do is go back to sleep!

Since I found myself back at my favorite hot spot in DC, FLY Lounge, I figured I would post some down tempo music that is made right down the street you guys! Before I get right into the music, I did want to point out that FLY is the tits! It is the bees knees! If you have not been, you NEED to go! The staff is great. Everyone from the door man to the bartenders, including my favorites, Lindsay, Mike, Wilmont and Niki (I hope that's how you spell your name) just to name a few!

OK, back to work... I am going to give you some Thievery Corporation today. For those who don't know, these guys have their own record label based out of DC. It is called ESL Music. ESL stands for Eighteenth Street Lounge, because YES they used to own the club. They ended up selling it to create the record label. You can still hear them spinning their every now and then.

OH! One more thing and I will have to thank Lindsay at FLY for this one. I am making this site iPhone compatible. I was showing her the site and realized that posting just the player is not great for people using mobile browsing. I am adding the links so that even the folks with iPhone's can listen in on the music. Thank you Lindsay!
