The used IBM Thinkpad R50P Pentium M 1.7 Ghz laptop that we have on the internet for sale is probably the best choice based on the specifications of this laptop. Here is the picture.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="177" caption="Used IBM Thinkpad R50p Laptop"][/caption]

This laptop includes a DVD Burner and 512 meg of ram. Not bad for the price. Another readson that we like this laptop is because it has a 128 meg video card which based on its age is a nice feature. I think that is what the p denotes in the model number.

IBM also has a great Tech support website that allows you to download any of the user manuals in pdf format as well as all the ibm software that would have come on the unit when it was brand new. All that you need to know is the type number of the laptop which is 1832-23U.

We like the IBM Thinkpad series in general because of the quality of the laptops. Usually when we refurbish the laptop IBM has the fewest problems to fix where as Dell or HP tend to appear more beat up and used up. However I have found that brands are really a personal preference and there is a lot of debate about which model and brand is the best.

We found alot of information about laptops at www.usedlaptops.net they seem to have reams of information about alot of the various model laptops. You can also check out www.cheap-laptops.org as well.

I had the chance to play with an IBM Thinkpad T43 Pentium M 760 2.0 ghz used laptop today. It was model number 1871-65U It included 1 gig of memory, 14 inch screen, a CDRW/DVD Player, and for security it has a fingerprint scanner which when setup will force you to scan your finger before the laptop starts up. So if your laptop gets stolen in the airport which apparently over 10,000 are reported. No one can access that unit with out your fingerprints. Perhaps if all laptops had this kind of security we would have less identity theft problems in this country.

However putting the security issue to the side this laptop follows the same design as the standard T40 series has. It is sleck and well made. I was impressed with its speed and security.

I have a vintage IBM Thinkpad model A22m. On the bottom is Bill Gates Windows-98 sticker, but when I bought it on ebay years ago it arrived with Bill's Windows-2000 Professional running. Over the years it has been hacked, invaded, pillaged and raped by everyone around the world. Since it's no fun to use anymore, I want to do a COMPLETE SYSTEM RESTORE and simply start from scratch.

So I followed the user manual instructions and pushed F8, F11, F12. Nope. I went to the world wide web and used up yahoo and google. I tried CraigsList and the old fashioned yellow pages. Since the current generation only seems to know XP and Vista, maybe some of my readers (or their friends) can help.

I need the System Restore CDs that were supposed to come with the laptop--but didn't. I want to beg, borrow, buy, or steal them so I can use my little laptop once again.

Anybody got any suggestions???

Many thanx and may your god bless...

My power adapter for my MacBook started to cook, burn and stink. So I called AppleCare, which I must say was a fantastic experience. I will have a new one today (shipped overnight) and all will be well. In the meantime I am sitting here using an old ThinkPad A31 with Ubuntu on it. I miss the GNOME desktop. I was never one for KDE (though I love Konqueror.)

Short story

I ordered the laptop on 06/11/08.

The initial estimated ship date: 07/02/08.

In around one week they told me that my laptop will be shipped on 06/28/08.

After 06/28/08 I found out that my new shipping date will be in the week of 07/07/08 or 07/13/08.

On 07/03/08 the shipping date is updated on Lenovo website to 08/06/08.

On 07/03/08 I cancel the order.

After I canceled the order, the laptop is shipped (on on the same date: 07/03/08).

The laptop was delivered by UPS on 07/07/08 and it works properly.

Long story

On 06/11/08, I ordered a Lenovo Thinkpad R61 laptop from Lenovo.com website. After the order was processed, I saw on the status page that my estimated shipping date is 07/02/08 as you can see in the following screenshot.

After one week (around 06/17/08) I called customer service to check up my notebook status and the lady whom I spoke to told me that the notebook will be shipped around 06/28/08. On 06/30/08 I called again because the status page wasn't updated and I find out that my shipping date was delayed to sometime around the week of 07/13/08. But on Lenovo website the shipping time was the same (07/02/08). After I talked to the lady, I wrote them an email (on 06/30/08) and in the email that I receive on 07/01/08 they told me that they estimate the shipping date around 07/07/08.

Quote from their email:

We apologize for any frustration we may have caused. We have contacted our supply team about this issue and they have updated your estimated ship date to July 7th, 2008.

On 07/03/08 the status on Lenovo website was updated. To 08/06/08. So almost two months after my order. See the following screenshot.

After I saw the new estimated ship date, I wrote them an email in which I canceled my order, but they didn't answer my email. Around 3pm (07/03/08) in the same day I called them and I ask them to cancel my order. They said that it will take 24 hours to confirm the cancellation. Around 10pm (07/03/08) I checked my email and I receive an email from Lenovo in which they told me that my laptop was shipped, even though as I told you, I already canceled the order. See the following screenshot.

So after all these, they were late with my shipment by only one day.

On 07/05/08 I receive an email response to my email in which I cancel my order. The answer at my cancellation was this:

We see that your order has been shipped already with UPS tracking number xyz. You may track the progress of your delivery in the UPS website using the track number provided.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience .

On 07/07/08 UPS delivered me the laptop. Everything was ok with the laptop and it works properly. The funny part is that UPS try to deliver the laptop to apartment #3 instead of apartment #5. Luckily nobody was home and I heard them knocking on the door of apartment #3. I checked to see if they come and they did.

In conclusion, I think ThinkPad laptops are very good, but Lenovo shipping and customer support suck big time.

I just had a great experience ordering from Lenovo, which I was not expecting. UPS did a good job,

I just had a great experience ordering from Lenovo, which I was not expecting. UPS did a good job, too, but that wasn't such a surprise.

I bought a Lenovo ThinkPad T61 last summer direct from the company. At least, I ordered one. There were so many delays that I canceled the order so it wouldn't arrive while I was away for almost a month. I reordered one three months later; there were fewer glitches, but it still took a month or more to get the unit.

I put up with the delay because ThinkPads are still the best notebook PCs there are. They're sturdy. They're rock solid reliable. The service is superb (I know not because I've ever had a ThinkPad just stop working, but because I dropped mine straight onto a cobblestone from four feet, cracking the case; it kept working fine, but I didn't like the crack and Lenovo service was fast and perfect). They've got good keyboards and the best notebook pointing device (TrackPoint) ever made. They come with useful and reliable extra software like Presentation Manager, instead of crapware. If I could legally get Mac OS/X on a ThinkPad it would be perfect.

I know a lot of people claim that ThinkPad quality has gone down since Lenovo completely took over from IBM. I was worried about how well they'd keep up with design; I expected construction to stay the same. Well, I've seen no drop in quality at all. I've been using ThinkPads for fifteen years. I've used three Lenovo ThinkPads after the turnover, and they're just as good as ever.

This story started on Friday, June 20. My wife's old ThinkPad T42 needed replacement. It still works as well as ever, but expectations keep going up and it was four years old. So we ordered her a T61 direct from Lenovo. The web site said that every model available would take at least two weeks to ship; the model we ordered said it would take three to four weeks. We placed the order anyway, and got a confirmation message listing the ship date as exactly four weeks after the order.

We ordered it on Friday and by Monday morning the Lenovo site said it had been shipped. They were telling the truth: the UPS site showed tracking information for it later that day. It started in Shenzhen, China (just north of Hong Kong) and I watched as it passed through Guangdong, Anchorage, and Louisville. Halfway through the trip UPS started showing its delivery date as today, July 1, 11 days after we'd placed the order and 8 days after Lenovo shipped it. Not bad; we'd paid for the cheapest shipping option (called "Ground" on the web site) because we figured we'd be waiting a long time before it even shipped anyway.

Well, it didn't arrive today. It arrived last Friday, slightly less than 7 days after we'd ordered it. Lenovo took the order, custom assembled the PC in China, and got it to our door in Georgia in less than a week.

I'm impressed and pleased with both Lenovo and UPS. They each underpromised and overdelivered. It would have been nice if Lenovo had been more accurate from the start so we could better plan for things, but we can't complain about the wait.

Having been a thinkpad user for the past 5 years have worked on the whole range of thinkpads starting from the R-Series & the T-series. But one which has always carried an aspirational value to it has been the Thinkpad Z-series. To get a better understanding about the perception & performance of the Z-series one could look at the discussion which happened when the Z-series was launched.

To determine whether the R-Series, T-series or the Z-series is better is something that would depend on many factors th most important being price. However on an absolute scale there's no taking away from the fact that the Z-series packs in the most and has been the best to come from the IBM stable.

Le Dame Footwear sells women's shoes in men's sizes
Verona-based business caters to transgendered shoppers

Kenneth Burns on Tuesday 06/24/2008 12:06 pm

The idea came as Bernie Fatla perused the newspaper.

"I read an article in the Sunday New York Times back in April '06," he says. "The headline was something like, 'If the Shoe Fits, You're Lucky'." The story described the woes of drag queens who can't find shoes in their sizes.

"I told my wife, 'There's a business here,'" says Fatla, a Verona resident who for "26 years and a week" worked as a buyer and manager at Famous Footwear.

Last year Fatla's idea came to fruition with the first shipment of shoes for Le Dame Footwear, which have feminine designs but are sized for men. Made in Quanzhou, China, the shoes are sold online, at transgender support groups and conferences, and at far-flung retail stores like Secrets of Romance in Sunrise, Fla. Fatla runs the business from his home; locally, Le Dame shoes are available at Wigs Too, 6317 Odana Road.

"This community has never been directly targeted," says Fatla. At mainstream shoe outlets, his customers are out of luck. "Look in women's shoes. The products stop at women's 10. That's a men's 8 1/2. The average men's size is 10 1/2."

In the Le Dame line are choices for both office and nightclub. The designs bear women's first names. "We have the Sharon, a four-inch heel pump," says Fatla. "It's in black, silver metallic, bronze metallic. We reinforce the heel. You get a girl who is six feet or 6'2" and weighs 220, you want stability. We engineered it right." The Sharon costs $69.99.

Also available are, among others, the Sophie ($79.99), an open-toe pump; the Kandi ($99.99), a thigh-high boot in silver or black; and the Barbara ($79.99), a pump with a one and three-quarter inch heel. "It's a nice piece of leather with a stretch vamp," says Fatla of the Barbara. "It's a nice-looking shoe."

It is now commonplace for companies to market their wares to lesbians and gay men, but firms catering to transgendered people are comparatively rare. That makes Le Dame a pioneering endeavor, but changing the world was not necessarily Fatla's goal. "It is a business," he says. "I didn't set out and say, 'It's time for people to recognize the transgender community.' I wasn't that altruistic."

But Fatla's customers are grateful for their comfortable shoes, and they tell him so. Their happiness motivates him.

"If I can make someone's life better because they're in shoes that fit," he says, "then wonderful."

I’ve officially bubbled in my last provincial examination. Yup, that’s right, at 3:59PM

I've officially bubbled in my last provincial examination. Yup, that's right, at 3:59PM today—erm, yesterday—I polished off the June 2008 Physics 12 examination. How was the exam? Well... not bad. I nearly ran out of time. Not because the questions were particularly difficult; no, today, I savoured taking my last-ever provincial exam, harsh fluorescent lighting and all. I fear this will be the last time I'll be able to take such luxuries during an exam, if university is indeed as gruelling as everyone says it is.

Without a doubt, I'll miss Centennial. It's impossible not to miss the place that's served as your second home for the past four years... I'll miss hanging in the band room (band geek and proud of it), "studying" in the library, and the rows of buckets lining the hallways in the winter. So long, Centennial, it's been good.

I figure it's time for a fresh start, now that I've put a seal on the secondary-school chapter of my life. Fresh start for this blog, newly cleaned room (...no easy feat), and... a new laptop!

After what amounts to days of perusing laptop reviews and forums, I finally went for a Lenovo Thinkpad X61 Tablet. Older model, yes, but tried and true, and there are some awesome incentives on it at the moment. I think I got a total of 35% off.

1.6Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo L7500 (4Mb L2 Cache, 800Mhz FSB)

Windows Vista Business 32-bit

3Gb DDR2 RAM

12" SXGA+ (1400x1050) Superview LCD

Intel GMA X3100 Integrated Graphics

160Gb 7200RPM Hard Drive

Integrated Bluetooth PAN

Intel Next-Gen Wifi a/b/g/n

8-cell Battery

I was a little concerned that the low-voltage processor would be too slow, but considering the Centrino M processor I'm on now gives me (almost) everything I want, I figure it should be fine. The SXGA+ screen is a big draw for me, because I don't think I could go back to 1280x800 or 1024x768 resolution after being spoilt by my Inspiron's 1680x1050 screen.

Yes, it's being replaced by the X200 this summer. But again, I won't be able to get the high resolution screen, and I certainly won't be able to configure that for under $2,000. Thus, ixnay on the X200. Could've gone for that LED-backlit screen though.

All there's left to do now... is wait. I have no idea whether I'll get it before I leave for England or not—certainly hope so though, as it'd be agony to wait an extra twenty days to get my oily fingerprints all over it.

This also means the side of me that's still yearning for a Mac gets pushed aside once again. I'm still in love with the Macbook Pro... but the tablet functionality of the X61 is just too valuable to give up. Sigh. One day I shall have thee, glowing Apple.

Enough nerding out for one evening.

The other day I noticed that the sound quality from my X60's headphones jack was severely degraded in the mid to low bass regions. This hadn't ever happened before, so at first I thought it must be a defect in my new earbuds. But tests with other headphones and other music players confirmed that the loss of sound quality was in fact originating from my computer.

I haven't been able to isolate what exactly is causing this yet. The distortion remains unchanged through high volume and low, so I'm fairly sure it's happening during some internal sound processing and isn't just a straightforward hardware problem. Reports from others describe symptoms that change as a result of merely fiddling with the volume control. So for lack of any other direction, I followed suit and brought up the ALSA mixer panel in Ubuntu's volume control GUI.

What I found was that for some reason PCM was cranked up to max volume (I probably did this a while back and just completely forgot about it), with the Master volume control only up about halfway. I don't understand why, but dropping PCM back down to about 80% immediately remedied the sound quality problems. I bumped up Master to compensate, and now everything sounds the way it should.

I picked up a refurbished Lenovo ThinkPad T61 a fortnight ago, with a view to capturing a fairly robust 'net-box capable of lifting the ceaseless strain [At LAST, Atlas !] from the ravaged, savaged, older shoulders of my utterly ADORED (but terribly tired and now marginally doddery) five-and-a-half-year-old Toshiba Satellite.

Key selling points of the new arrival (who's not a rival) were 1 its Windows XP Pro operating system (I'm NOT interested in the bloat, strain and incompatability associated with Vista), 2 its sensible (nigh-on staid) NON-REFLECTIVE, easy (i.e. zero) maintenance matt-finish screen and 3 its comfy keyboard.

It fully triumphed meeting that trio of prioritised promises.......

Good, good.....and good.

SO WHAT'S THE PROBLEM ?

Hmm. The problem is one that was, to me, both unforeseen and unheard of : Hence my

<<< SOUND WARNING >>>

to any of you who may be in the market for a new computer and expecting your fresh purchase to function AT LEAST AS WELL as whatever you've most recently been depending on.

"It seems a small ask"

but you need to
(ask)
make sure that you do

and that the I.T.-"it" will do...

...ALL that you want it to.

The Lenovo T61 will NOT do all that I took it for granted that it would do. (I didn't ask, I didn't know it was necessary so to do so (: so "what a "to do !" (and WHAT can be DONE ??!))). It is supplied with a Soundmax HD Audio "solution". The sole recording option available is "Microphone". Absent and currently UNOBTAINABLE is any variant of "Stereo Mix", "Wav" or "What U Hear" meaning that it is impossible to record ANY sound source that is playing on the machine - regardless of the origins of those noises.

I suspect this means I would not be able to use Cool Edit Pro to record live vocals piped through MorphVox Pro. <SIGH>. I'll have to dig out a Screaming Bee FAQ. In the meantime, I'm going to log a couple of Internet Forums discussing (and disgustedly cussing) the issue here :

Today, on June 16, 2008, my Thinkpad has gone mute.

Yesterday, there was signs of illness. I noticed the occasional windows sounds stopped chiming in after working for a few hours. Fearing the worst, I rushed to a Youtube video to find nothing but moving images. I thought some volume is muted. But the speakers on my Thinkpad sounded not after I adjusted settings but rather just haphazardly after running music. Suspecting loose wiring, I felt like there was nothing I could do.

And so, today, when I suspected the worse again in the library, it really happened. No more ESPN chit-chat and no more Heifetz videos will sound through these speakers, I think. Maybe taking it between work, the library, and the apartment had a detrimental effect. But again, what could I do? Should I still hold out hope?

Edit: Nevermind, got it hahaha. =)

It was only replaced because of the (well-known) video chip issues - BGA device comes unsoldered, joints unreliable and cause intermittent video problems. ThinkWiki covers this issue in some detail. I tried the aluminium foil mask and heat gun approach but it didn't make a lot of difference. These days, I find that two or three power cycles, gently thumping the bottom of the A31 about where the CPU and graphics card are, and on occasions removing the battery, will get the machine to start up in correct video mode and stay there all day. Good motherboards for A31s are rare and pricey (even on eBay).

Sound card partially works: there is sound coming out of the speakers but the microphone is not picking up the sound. I googled and found out that I may need to reinstall some packages.

My T61 doesn't have a fancy graphic card like T61p and it works out-of-box.

Firefox 3 beta 5 rocks. I have no high CPU consumption problem running GMail for a long time.

I'm doing a dual boot with Vista and Ubuntu. Now I have less need to ever go back to Windows.

Layar 10-13 inch

Berat 1-2kg

Memory 1GB

Harddisk minimal 80GB

WIfi, bluetooth dan ethernet

Garansi 1thn

Operating system minimal linux

Baterai lebih dari 2 jam

Budget Rp. 7jt,-

Or in German "Winzerpfanne". It was the dish for Monday evening. A few weeks ago, Sandra and I have had this great idea to have a cooking session. Due to my small appartement and my move not until 1st July we decided to use her kitchen in their church. Marvin and Cora joined us and we've had a very nice evening. Marvin bought some really delicious strawberries, my first in this season!

The night ended with an attempt to repair Sandra's broken laptop called "Gabriel", an older but still good looking IBM Thinkpad. The display seemed to have a loose contact and shows either black or funny wallpaper patterns... We couldn't solve the problem, but everybody had his first insight of an opened Laptop now =)

By the way, Sandra told me that she doesn't like to read my blog because of all this technical stuff in here. So I'll try to make this a little bit more personal, even when the purpose was originally only technical =)

For someone who craves security and certainty, this year is proving pretty painful and, if I'm not careful, I shall break my own unwritten, now typed, rule about ***NOT BLEATING ON MY BLOG***...

......not eating on the bog.

Unhealthy, unwealthy and "Why ?"s'll never cease,
Until I seize, from Abstract Pleas, a modicum of peace.

Hmm - so I dis(k)overed this morning that Windows XP, and even its pre-deceased, predecessor : Windows 98, will NOT converse with the elderly. Both Operating Systems claim my text-packed 3.5" disks, created in the period-peppered period from 1991-1997, are blank and should be formatted. This is TOS. Some of them were initiated with TOS on my ST others began with Windows 3.1 and Windows 95.

I'm sure there IS a spoddy solution to re-gaining access to the files I archived (in the belief that retrieval would be a permanent possibility), but, for the moment, I must resign myself to perpetuating my estrangement from epistolary ephemera and be glad that my other odder scribblings still exist in jotted journals - slotted, blotted never plotted.

Upon returning from airing the wolfling, I aim to introduce them to my ThinkPad.

I've never needed "Word" before and wonder if we'll cringe.
