Com esta vitória o piloto português junta-se a Gabriele Tarquini, ao vencer pela segunda vez no campeonato 2008. Depois de vencer em Puebla, subir ao pódio em Portugal, foi um momento muito especial, que encheu também de alegria a população portuguesa.
Tiago Monteiro partiu da primeira linha da grelha e manteve o segundo posto, fazendo depois um trabalho contínuo de ataque ao primeiro lugar. Nas duas primeiras voltas pressionou e à terceira assumiu a liderança da prova, que manteria até ao final da prova.
Satisfeitíssimo com a sua prestação, dedicou a vitória à sua filha recém-nascida, a Mel, e à sua companheira, Diana Pereira: «Não me canso de dizer que foi um dia muito especial, até porque estive ao pé da Mel e da Diana, a quem dedico esta vitória», declarou o piloto no final da competição.
Ora é precisamente a companheira e a filha que o ligam ao concelho do Sabugal, pois a modelo Diana Pereira, é neta de gente de Aldeia Velha.

Capeia Arraiana felicita também o pai e o campeão Tiago Monteiro, agradecendo ainda ao José do Bernardo, nosso amigo e colaborador, que nos fez chegar a novidade da ligação do jovem piloto ao concelho do Sabugal, por via da filha e da futura esposa.

Alguém podia dizer ao senhor secretário de estado que há limites para o que é razoável. Compete ao instituto do desporto distribuir as verbas pelas modalidades e apoiar as federações dos diversos eventos que organizam.

E todos sabemos que há modalidades mais caras que outras. Uma piscina é mais cara que um par de sapatilhas!

Mas agora eu gostava era de perceber quanto é que um atleta olímpico (sim, um daqueles que vai à China) vai receber de apoio? Já nem falo do milhares de desportistas que nunca verão um tusto, porque por infelicidade da natureza não são tão bons para vencer e dar nas vistas.

Esperem aí, o Tiago Monteiro não ganhou nada... aliás o senhor secretário de estado diz que o subsidio foi pago para não ser despedido! Ora meus senhores, então um gajo que está quase a ser despedido da modalidade que pratica e recebe um subsidio de 2 milhões de euros? 300 mil contos?

Andam a gozar com os cidadãos e com os atletas das restantes modalidades, e ainda por cima fazem-no achando tudo "perfeitamente normal", reagindo ainda indignados à questão, como se quem pergunta fosse algum otário que não vê que 300 mil contos são coisa pouca. "São só um nome num espelhinho retrovisor"!

Their 20th victory in 25 league games, Jesualdo Ferreira's side crushed CF Estrela da Amadora 6-0 to claim their 23rd title (and third in succession) with strikes from (amongst others) Lucho González and Ricardo Quaresma (in the club's SF car, above).

Porto now have an insurmountable 18-point lead over SL Benfica and Vitória FC, and their victory means they are now closing in on Benfica's record (they won the 1972/73 Liga title by 18 points).

"This club approaches football with a different kind of passion," said Ferreira to UEFA.com. "The fans are more demanding and our players are the best so I'm very proud of them."

FC Basel also collected silverware yesterday when they won the Swiss Cup for a second consecutive season, having won 4-1 against lower league AC Bellinzona (and at St Jakob Park, too!). Well done from everyone at SF to FCB!

Ora bem... James cancelam o seu concerto no Super Bock do Porto e qual transferência futebolística qual quê são contratados pelo Festival Marés Vivas de Gaia... Por mim tudo bem! Mais barato e melhor... Acho que me deixa bastante satisfeito a ideia do SBSR do Porto ser um desastre autêntico... Para a próxima não repetem o erro! Agora, o que me deixa um pouco apreensivo é ver que James têm 3 datas quase consecutivas em Portugal... Porto, Coimbra e Braga... Fui ver a agenda deles agora e têm concertos agendados apenas para o Reino Unido, Espanha, Portugal e Grécia... Não sei bem o que isto quer dizer nem se estarão lá todas as datas já confirmadas, mas espero que esta reunião não dê origem a uma banda que se arraste por meia dúzia de sítios a tocar...

Ainda na música... Já aqui em baixo tinha dito, esta semana fui ver Editors ao Coliseu... Não era lá um grande conhecedor da matéria, mas acho que não poderia ter ficado mais convencido... Muita atitude, e uma voz completamente diferente... Não sei como classificar aquilo, mas o homem numa Opera não ficaria nada mal... Mas a maior surpresa ainda aconteceu antes... A banda de abertura que está a fazer todos os concertos dos Editors nesta digressão pela Europa chama-se Mobius Band... 3 rapazes vindos de New York, com muitos sons electrónicos, fazendo lembrar desde logo LCD Soundsystem... Um som muito refrescante! Ahh... E eles eram os maiores! Nada de roadies, cada um a arrumar a sua tralha... E ainda tiveram tempo para cumprimentar a malta à saída do concerto... Dêem um salto ao MySpace!

E já que se fala em Coliseu, foi conhecido esta semana o novo nome do antigo Pavilhão Rosa Mota... Vai-se chamar Porto Arena... Acho bem, o tempo da Rosa Mota já lá vai, e um nome estrangeirado nunca fica mal... Dizem que o espaço ficará pronto em 2010 e envolve um investimento de 18 milhões de euros, por parte do consórcio Coliseu do Porto, AEP e Pavilhão Atlântico... Definem o objectivo de criar um espaço que acolha espectáculos familiares como o Noddy... Não sei o que isto irá dar, mas revitalizar o espaço é fundamental, e ter um espaço com capacidade para 6 mil lugares no Porto também já se exige faz muito tempo...

Se há coisa que me facilita imenso, as listas feitas pelo pessoal estão no topo... Lista dos melhores CD's... Lista de coisas a fazer... Lista de filmes... Tudo resumido em poucas linhas. Esta semana saíram finalmente os resultados da sondagem feita pela revista Empire chamada "The 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time"... Claro que é sempre muito subjectivo e facilmente influenciável... Mas lá que dá gosto ver Simpsons no primeiro lugar, lá isso dá! Gosto de ver que tenho andado a ver das melhores séries que já existiram... Não gosto é de ver The Office em 23º! Ponham lá isso mais para cima oh faz favor...

E acontecimento mais recente... Tiago Monteiro venceu a sua primeira corrida no WTCC, depois dum fim de semana em que foi constantemente o piloto mais rápido em pista... Já estava a merecer... Parabéns! E parece que o mito que dizia que depois de ser pai, ficaria mais lento 1s por volta, acabou de cair...

The driver, who now races in WTCC will feature in the Portuguese version of Gran Tursimo 5, the latest version of the popular series.

It relies upon HD graphics, and with all new features and cars inclduing Ferrari's for the first time.  It also features Kimi Raikkonen's championship winning F2007.

The GT5 Prologue game is released this week in the UK, and the full version is out in September.

"It was a new experience for me," said Monteiro yesterday, 

"I must say that I enjoyed it a lot actually and I'm curious to see the final result."

After the disappointment of 2007 (and amidst the chaos in Melbourne yesterday), McLaren-Mercedes got back to winning ways at the Australian Grand Prix, with Lewis Hamilton getting his 2008 F1 campaign off to a flyer.

Just as interesting, however, was the proposal by Williams team co-owner, Patrick Head, who seems to back the radical Superleague Formula idea of reversing the grids.

The report on the BBC website talks about Head's view being "largely at odds with that of FIA president Max Mosley, who has in the past likened the strategic complexity of Grands Prix to chess matches. Mosley admits overtaking is currently a little bit too difficult, but he argues that if it became too easy it would lose its appeal."

It's good to hear him talk about the subject, though. To support his proposal, Head talked about the 2005 Japanese Grand Prix, a dramatic race that included a number of daring overtaking manoeuvres.

At our Porto launch in January, Tiago Monteiro also talked about the concept: "It is certainly hard, but I think it is good for the show and at the end of the day you have to make the fans happy – that’s what they want to see, lots of passing.”

There's certainly been a lot of discussions on the subject, with many motorsport fanatics questioning the viability of such a concept but, as alway, we're happy to continue the debate. So, what do you think?

An avid FC Porto supporter, Monteiro believes the Superleague Formula championship is a great idea – particularly the plan of having the second race as a reverse grid event, as he (and club captain, Pedro Emanuel) explain in the film above.

"I think it’s a great concept. To join the fans and strength of football with motorsport is a project that can only have success because there are so many fans in those two sports. Bring them together and it will be very popular.

"I'm a professional driver and all these championships are very interesting and it is a matter of looking closely at it. I have a contract for 2008 with SEAT in the World Touring Car Championship but you never know, maybe it is possible to do something.

Monteiro also commented on Superleague Formula's 'reverse grids' concept:

"As a driver it is always frustrating because you have done all the hard work and won the first race and then have to start from the back. It is certainly hard, but I think it is good for the show and at the end of the day you have to make the fans happy – that's what they want to see, lots of passing."

We also got the chance to speak to 2007 World Series Renault championship winner, Alvaro Parente, who also won the 2005 British Formula 3 Championship: "The concept is very good. To mix football - which is the biggest sport - with car racing is really incredible. I am used to seeing FC Porto winning on the football pitch and if we can see the same in Superleague Formula, that would be brilliant."

One of the original four clubs to be announced as taking part the championship in April last year, captain Pedro Emanuel and coach Jesualdo Ferreira, togther with the entire FC Porto squad (who were in good form), revealed their own blue and white Superleague Formula car in traditional style.

Held at the state-of-the-art Estádio do Dragão Stadium, which hosted the opening game of the Euro 2004 championship, we also had four potential drivers at the launch, including ex F1-driver and SEAT World Touring Car Championship star Tiago Monteiro (below) and Alvaro Parente - who all jumped into the car with far more grace than Quaresma, by the way!

“I’m sure the F.C. Porto fans will closely follow Superleague Formula, a competition that will gather some of the best football clubs on the race track,” said Pinto da Costa, FC Porto’s President.

“These races will be very important to reinforce the global impact of FC Porto, which is already represented across five continents, and which will now have a new focus of interest for its worldwide fans, as Superleague Formula will be a global-spanning event with races at different venues.

"We congratulate the organisation for this initiative. I’m sure we will witness great spectacles and very close racing, as all cars are based on the same platform."

While British race fans have the chance to see the Superleague Formula cars at Autosport International for the first time this weekend, FC Porto fans will be able to see their car this Saturday night, when the 22-time Portuguese champions take on SC Braga.

"FC Porto was one of our initial clubs to sign,” said Alex. “We are thrilled to kick off 2008 with the unveiling of the "dragon" here in the famous port city."

Monteiro escusou-se a avançar mais pormenores sobre a sua estreia na mítica prova de todo-o-terreno, remetendo para a conferência de imprensa de apresentação do projecto, a realizar quinta-feira, em Lisboa.

As is Spanish custom, there is a second surname on world champion Fernando Alonso's birth certificate. It is 'Diaz' - his mother's maiden name.

McLaren charger Kimi Räikkönen, meanwhile, has a second first name; separated with a hyphen, the 26-year-old Finn was actually born 'Kimi-Matias Räikkönen'.

Bet you didn't know that MF1's Portuguese racer is actually called 'Tiago Vagaroso da Costa Monteiro'. Or that the feisty Colombian in the McLaren cockpit is officially Juan Pablo Montoya-Roldan.

David Coulthard's middle name is the slightly odd 'Marshall', while fellow Brit Jenson Button has two - 'Alexander' and 'Lyons'. 'Goncalves' is Brazilian Rubens Barrichello's middle name.

No! There is not mention of Michael Schumacher having any middle name.
