It's the 50th anniversary of paddington the bear
here's some info i found on him!
Almost everyone knows that Paddington is a bear who usually wears a duffle coat,a rather shapeless hat and, on occasions, Wellington boots. Many people also know that his favourite food is marmalade and that he orginally comes from Darkest Peru.

Paddington Bear, the creation of author Michael Bond, made his first appearance in the 1958 book A Bear Called Paddington. Since his inception, Paddington Bear has become one of the best beloved characters in children’s fiction. He has appeared in numerous other novels, has inspired plays, television series, and a whole range of marketable Paddington Bear items, including many versions of stuffed animals.

Michael Bond was inspired to create a few stories about Paddington Bear, after purchasing a rather lonely teddy bear in a store near the Paddington railroad station. After a few months of treatment, the Paddington Bear short story was becoming novel length, and British publisher Harper Collins eagerly accepted the work.

Paddington Bear, as a character, is first discovered at the Paddington train station. He has been sent to England from Peru by his aged Aunt Lucy, and wears a little sign around his neck that states: “Please look after this bear. Thank you.” The Brown family takes pity on the abandoned Paddington Bear and brings him home, where he soon becomes a vital member of the family.

i105-107 is a happy camper today. We were at the PPI awards t'other night and our sister i102-104 was a winner in not one, not two but three categories.

Awesome - especially since they were winners in every category they were nominated in!

i GO HOME was the winner in the Light Entertainment Programme award.

Tommy and Hector (Deadly) won a silver award for The Tommy And Hector Show in the Specialist Speech Programme Award.

They also (high-five) won a bronze award for Hell Hath No Fury - Like a Radio Station Scorned.

We're so gonna be up there next year.

I was a bit skeptical about the BBC's ability to reproduce the TopGear show phenomenon in other countries with other presenters. Well I was wrong, sort of. I watched the first episode of the Australian TopGear show on Friday and um, it's exactly the same. Frighteningly the same. Like they lifted the set exactly as it is in the UK and rebuilt it in Australia. They didn't even let them customize it to Aussie standards. The intro is also an exact copy of the intro for the TG UK show. Same music, same images just different outlines of different guys and a few new clips. Ok, that is just freaky. I expected the logo and theme music to go over but they treated this like a franchise of American Idol. Yuck.

I would have liked to see the mimicry end at the logo and theme music. After that why not give the show their own ability to create a cool guy set with some Australian flair? Is Britain just too into the monarchy system to let individual creativity happen?

And the guys are totally the same, it's like they cloned them with better hair. The older guy is the main lead presenter and he is cocky and always making fun of the other guys and showing off like Jeremy. The second guy is shorter and way hyper and talks hella fast and is all emotional all the time like Richard. The third guy is a cartoonist, (I like this twist, he draws on sight and this could lead to some interestingness) and not a pro driver and most like James may with short hair. (Charlie Cox, Warren Brown, Steve Pizzati)

And OMG there is no intro that explains what the show is or where it came from. Hello, a segway was necessary there. Would it have killed them to say that they have launched their own creation under the TopGear family umbrella and introduce the guys in a little more detail. Maybe say why they wanted to do the show in the first place and why they went through an open audition process to get there? Was that funny at all behind the scenes?

They just try to jump into cockiness and double entendre with total awkwardness because no one knows who they are. They should say this is the biggest car show about absolutely nothing or this is the car show where we plan to break very expensive things. Anything would be better than odd pauses as the audience doesn't know what to laugh at because no one knows who these guys are.... Or they haven't yet gotten comedic timing from their cue cards...

I sincerely hope they allow these series a little more breathing room to not only re-create things with a regional flavor but to look for ways to improve on the show and innovate too. Things will never innovate if the guys are practicing talking like Jeremy Clarkson in their dressing rooms and they have to name turns on the track after the UK presenters.

Dude, and they never say anything about the Stig being the Australian cousin? Why just make up all this stuff about the Stig with such a weak intro. Yikes! The guest star in a reasonably priced car was weird too. Over enthusiastic in everything he said in a really creepy way. And he liked Saabs. Heh, I own one buddy they are not luxury and sport cars. They are an unreliable bowl of crap. This post has been brought to you by "don't buy a Saab". 

I shouldn't be so hard on the show but I am a fan, so I have to be this way.  I plan on watching the second one tonight. The thing is they did have some snafus that were a surprise to the viewer even if they were scripted so it had it's entertaining moments. But gee whiz, please let these smart people you have hired in Australia do what they do best, make a funny car show by mucking around.

I do have to mention though that the content of the show was around 55 minutes with the commercials cut out (that might be entertaining to watch commercials from another country actually, if they're weird or funny) so at least they shoved the commercials on the end of the 60 minutes and added time rather than cut it back. Yay for that.

And...when this show and the US show have gotten their feet under them we need to have an inter TG competition of some kind between the 3 regions. But that is not for a couple of years yet...

On Friday night, the 10th October 2008, an auction was held in which some 61 items went under the hammer including a sailing boat which sold for $500.00, several art works and various other items and packages which included massages, holidays and meals at various restaurants.

It was interesting to see that one package valued at $100.00 actually went for $110.00.

The art show has been a success and raised funds for several charities including the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and Meals on Wheels.

Haines http://hainesreport.pt.wordpress.com/2008/10/10/stock-market-panic-of-2008-sets-inwhich-is-good-news/ The notion that an increase in public panic is actually good for the markets may seem counter-intuitive but I believe it is important to note that it is PEOPLE who make up the markets; this means that all of their emotions, all of their beliefs, their confidence, BAD news and GOOD news...EVERYTHING ABOUT THEM and what they see and hear...is what will drive prices higher and lower.

In other words, we have not yet seen a bottom to the Dow Jones Industrial Average...we have not yet seen enough panic selling by the everyday investor to allow some sort of sanity to return to the financial markets.

The problem is...the bad news is just beginning to trickle in as the American taxpayer is starting to realize that the 700 Billion Dollar Bailout (that they funded) is not an automatic serum for an ill stock market; the bailout was merely an attempt by our politicians and Wall Street to psychologically calm and soothe the masses...to try and show us that as long as they are in control, as long as we cooperate, sunshine will return to our lives and all will be well again with the markets and our retirement portfolios.

And of course, as usual, the government was 100% completely wrong in their assessment and the markets have continued to plunge despite their best efforts to manipulate our feelings and thought process.  The American people are not dumb and they can smell a "rat" when it's in the room...so while most of the newspapers and networks and their analysts spewed out a bunch of nonsense regarding a "bounce" upward and how sanity would now return to the financial markets, most Americans were not buying what the networks were selling.

I believe that men like Jim Cramer...who is usually irrationally BULLISH on the markets...and world class investor Jim Rogers are just some of the sane voices that need to be listened to more and more as the weeks go by; in addition, irregardless of his lack of charisma and lack of appeal to the media networks, all Americans would do well to listen to Ron Paul---especially with regard to the fiscal policies of the United States of America and how we, as American citizens, have let our representatives and Senators drive our financial independence and strength over the cliff.

We should have let those companies that mismanaged their money...AND OUR MONEY...go bankrupt and then let those companies that are prospering and conducting good business snap up their assets at a cheap price and then make them profitable once again; that's how capitalism works and that's how life works...some people win and some people lose, and sometimes, a good cleansing is necessary after artificial profits have been conjured up and mismanagement has occurred.

And we sure as heck should not just be printing money out of thin air in order to somehow make everyone believe that all is well on the financial front; the next crisis that occurs...3..5..10 years down the road will be 10 times worse than what we are currently feeling because instead of letting the nature of financial markets take their course (i.e. sometimes bankruptcy of companies), our government has chosen to cover up their misdeeds and lies with a 700 Billion Dollar Bailout.

I can't wait for the upcoming $5.00 gallon of milk... :(

The market will bottom out when we sell enough of our equities that the Dow Jones Industrial Average hits somewhere in the 7250-7500 range; at that point, people will be mad enough to scream at their government representatives to make the appropriate fiscal changes, mad enough to vote for the presidential candidate that will more than likely pursue policies (lower taxes, incentives for saving money, etc.) THAT WILL BENEFIT the people (HINT: That will not be the collectivist Barack Obama) and just reasonable enough to realize that the sky is not falling and companies like IBM, Intel, Proctor and Gamble, McDonald's and Wells Fargo are still great companies, with great products, who are worth investing in.
